12 Best Seafood Restaurants in Tours

While Tours is celebrated worldwide for its Renaissance architecture and its position as the gateway to the Loire Valley châteaux, the city quietly holds another distinction: it is one of the most satisfying places to eat in central France. The local dining scene is shaped by the rich agricultural land that surrounds it, known as the Garden of France, which supplies kitchens with a steady rhythm of seasonal produce, freshwater fish, goat cheese, and orchard fruit.

Because the city sits inland, many visitors arrive expecting classic bistro fare and leave surprised by the depth and precision of the seafood on offer. Modern logistics and long-standing relationships with Atlantic coast suppliers mean that oysters from Marennes-Oléron, mussels from bouchot beds, and line-caught fish from Brittany can appear on a Tours table within hours of leaving the water. This has created a competitive market where freshness is the baseline, not the exception.

That said, finding the best seafood in Tours requires more than walking into the nearest brasserie. The most rewarding experiences are often tucked away on side streets near Place Plumereau, along the tram line toward the Loire, or in quieter residential quarters where chefs have built loyal neighbourhood followings. Knowing where to look makes the difference between a forgettable meal and one that anchors your memory of the city.

The following selection reflects a range of styles and budgets, from elegant fine-dining rooms to unpretentious raw bars and family-run kitchens. Each recommendation has been evaluated for the quality of its sourcing, consistency of execution, and the overall value it offers to a visitor or resident. You will find places suited to a long celebratory lunch as well as spots where you can lean on a zinc counter and share a plateau of shellfish without ceremony.

What unites these restaurants is a respect for the product. You will notice that menus change often, sometimes daily, depending on what the fishmonger delivers. That is a sign of a kitchen that refuses to compromise, and it is exactly what you should look for when choosing where to eat seafood in a city nearly 200 kilometres from the nearest port.

Below is a curated list of twelve establishments that currently represent the best of Tours’ seafood scene. Use it as a starting point, but always check opening days and reservation policies before you go, as the finest small dining rooms fill quickly.

Amazing old school French restaurant with great service, delicious food and a cool retro vibe. We ordered 2 price fix dinners and added dessert to share. I had the best fois gras ever followed by the best slow roasted duck ever. Wifey started with beautiful and delicious smoked salmon followed by perfectly cooked and scrumptious steamed sea bass. A very reasonably priced bottle of local white wine paired perfectly with our meals. We were very impressed and highly recommend this local gem!!!

Very good seafood restaurant, they have a la carte and also 2 menu options. There is a separated pages with the fresh choices of the day in addition to the ones in the menu. The 2 menu options are 24.5 or 34.5 but you can also choose only starter+main or main+dessert, so very flexible. I had a menu and a glass of the Graves wine, 34€ (no dessert). Booking in advance is recommended.

A very bad experience. The service was unpleasant from beginning to end. The first saleswoman was inattentive: we placed our order, she forgot about us, and we had to ask someone else. The second saleswoman wasn't any more friendly. We ordered six langoustines for €35: they were dry, almost empty, and very small. At that price, even by the sea, I've never seen langoustines so small and with no meat. The oysters were okay, nothing special. Everyone at the counter received a jar of mayonnaise with their seafood, except us, without any explanation. Total: €55 for six oysters, six langoustines, and two small glasses of wine—far too expensive for the quantity and quality. I was actually looking forward to going; my boyfriend had wanted to try this place for a long time, and it was also his birthday. A huge disappointment. Very poor value for money and the reception needs improvement.

Good quality oysters after a lively night with friends, good bottles of wine offered to accompany this briny pleasure, an atmosphere worthy of the Halles de Tours, I recommend it.

A very wide selection of fish, shellfish, and crustaceans is a must-see, and above all, the staff who serve you always have a kind word or culinary advice to offer. A pleasure.

Absolutely divine oysters! Selection of top-quality white wines. Enjoy in or take away. The perfect spot if you love seafood!

A lovely little spot to enjoy oysters, shellfish, and more, accompanied by a glass of wine at the bar. Not to mention the warm welcome, which adds a significant touch to the overall quality.

Practical Tips for Choosing Seafood in Tours

A little local knowledge goes a long way when you are deciding where to spend your money on seafood in a landlocked city. These practical tips will help you avoid common disappointments and eat with the confidence of a regular.

Follow the seasons, not just the menu. The best seafood restaurants in Tours adjust their offerings to the natural cycles of the Atlantic and the Loire. Ask what arrived that morning rather than ordering a dish you remember from a summer menu. Scallops are at their peak in winter, while sardines and mackerel shine in warmer months.

Do not ignore the plateau de fruits de mer. Even if you usually prefer cooked fish, a shared seafood platter is often the purest test of a kitchen’s sourcing. Pay attention to the quality of the oysters, the temperature of the shellfish, and whether the brown shrimp and whelks taste of the sea rather than the fridge.

Look for set lunch formulas. Many excellent seafood restaurants in Tours offer a midweek lunch menu at a fraction of the evening price. This is the smartest way to experience a top kitchen without stretching your budget, and the same standards usually apply.

Check the wine list for Loire Valley whites. A seafood restaurant that cares about its food will almost always champion local producers. Wines from Vouvray, Montlouis, and Sancerre are natural partners for fish and shellfish, and their presence on the list is a good sign of a thoughtful operation.

Reserve ahead for Friday and Saturday nights. Seafood is a weekend ritual for many locals, and the best addresses in Tours are small. Calling a day or two in advance is not only courteous but often essential if you want a table at a sensible hour.

Ask about the fish of the day before looking at the full menu. The way a server describes the catch, including where it came from and how it is prepared, tells you a great deal about the kitchen’s relationship with its suppliers. A vague answer usually means a frozen product.

Tours proves that you do not need a sea view to eat extraordinary seafood. The city’s best tables are driven by relationships, timing, and a deep respect for the raw material, and that is something you can taste on the plate from the first oyster to the last spoonful of fish soup.

Whether you are pausing between château visits or settling in for a long evening in the old town, the seafood restaurants of Tours reward the curious eater. Trust the daily specials, ask questions, and let the season guide your choices. In a city surrounded by some of the finest produce in France, the ocean feels closer than the map suggests.
