12 Best Steakhouses in Tours

Finding a great steak in the historic city of Tours is about more than just satisfying a craving; it is about experiencing the rich agricultural heritage of the Indre-et-Loire region. Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, often called the "Garden of France," Tours benefits from proximity to some of the country’s finest cattle farms. This geographic advantage means local chefs have access to premium breeds like Charolais and Limousine, known for their tenderness and deep flavor.

The culinary scene in this vibrant university town ranges from traditional French brasseries to contemporary dining rooms, all competing for the title of the best cut. However, the definition of a great steakhouse here varies widely. You might find a classic "Entrecôte" served with shallot sauce in a wood-paneled bistro, or a dry-aged tomahawk seared over an open flame in a modern grill house.

Navigating the dining landscape can be overwhelming, especially if you are visiting for the first time. You want to ensure you are spending your money on quality meat that is cooked to perfection, rather than settling for a tourist trap. That is why we have curated a list that focuses on meat provenance, cooking technique, and overall atmosphere.

Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner after exploring the Château de Villandry or a power lunch near the Place Plumereau, there is a venue for you. We have analyzed local reviews, assessed the consistency of the kitchens, and evaluated the wine lists to ensure your red wine pairs beautifully with your ribeye. Our goal is to guide you to the spots where locals actually go for a special occasion.

This guide prioritizes quality and authenticity over fleeting trends. We believe that a true steakhouse is defined by its respect for the animal and the producer, as well as the skill of the grillardin. Below, you will find a hand-picked selection of establishments that represent the pinnacle of meat dining in Tours, followed by expert advice on how to order like a local.

Thank you so much for the wonderful welcome! We had a fantastic evening, enjoying ourselves before my mom went into the hospital! 😉 The atmosphere was truly amazing, the servers were friendly and welcoming, and the food was excellent. 👌🏻 The Wagyu was superb, by the way—it melted in your mouth! Next time, I hope I'll be brave enough to try a dessert, because this time I bit off more than I could chew with the tapas and the meat! 😆

We chose Le Boeuf Sur la Place because it looked cute, authentic and exactly like the kind of local place we like to try when traveling. Unfortunately, the food was really disappointing. The waitress was kind and friendly, but the owner or manager didn't come across as very welcoming. There were four of us and we all ordered steak and fries. My husband ordered his steak rare and the rest of us ordered medium rare. When they came out, the steaks were so overcooked they were practically charcoal. The fries were even worse — completely soaked in dark, old-tasting grease and honestly inedible. We also ordered the duck foie gras, which we were looking forward to, but unfortunately it tasted cheap and wasn't very good either. It's a shame because the restaurant itself has a cute, authentic atmosphere and we really wanted to like it. Maybe we just caught them on a bad night, but based on our experience, the food was a major disappointment.

We loved every aspect of our experience! The food was delicious. I’m not a steak person, so I ordered the salmon..delicious! My family loved their perfectly cooked steak. The wine list was extensive. The service was welcoming.
Kerrigan Malek★★★★★
The service was the best! The frites and bœuf were amazing. Highly recommend for a nice quiet meal. With a great bottle of wine it was a very reasonable dinner.

Great little restaurant in a bustling area of Tours. Staff were very kind in accommodating the fact that we speak no French. We ordered a couple glasses of red wine and two steaks. The red wine was simple but nice. The meals were nice. The chips are amazing and worth a visit on their own. The only let down for us were unfortunately the steaks. We requested rare and medium-rare tournedo but both arrived as blue. This would be fine normally but unfortunately the cut we had was quite tough. This is unusual in our experience for a cut like eye-fillet. Not sure if it was unlucky or the steak had been frozen. The meal sizes are big, and this restaurant presents amazing value. Overall, I highly suggest visiting but perhaps risk ordering a more cooked steak than what you want to eat.

This place. Serious. The fondue experience at its finest… I sat out on the street (warm and non rainy Friday evening) and ordered the beef fondue. It was really tasty beef, the odd bit of gristle but in the whole very tasty. Home made chips were super tasty too, alongside some locally sourced vin de rouge, made for a very nice dinner. The place mainly had locals visiting, however as a tourist was made to feel welcome and the hosts were super friendly. 100% worth a visit if you are in the area 🙂

A highlight of our trip and it was only the first night! The four of us loved the food and drink, atmosphere and the service. Thank you!

Unique Basque cuisine experience with self-cooking hot plates. A bit on the expensive side, but worth it!

Fabulous fondue restaurant in the center of Tours. We loved the classic fondue and the chimichurri beef cooked in the hot stone. Excellent, friendly service and a nice back terrace made for a very nice evening!
Lucrezia Sperzani★★★★☆
Food: good and tasty meat, we tried the bourgignonne and it was really good. French fries are very good as well. Price: fair price Location: very nice the back patio, we don’t recommend to stay inside Staff: staff was kind but not very present at our table, in particular we had to stand up and look for the waiter to ask for water etc..

We received a very warm welcome upon arrival. The service was quick and the waitress was friendly. The meal was delicious, with the option of a second portion of fries, and we had two portions of meat. And what can I say about the secret sauce? It was delicious! I highly recommend it if you like meat.

We made a stop in the city of Tours on the way back to Paris and found this highly rated restaurant on Google review. Food was delicious and served very quickly upon order. Atmosphere was perfect and my two young kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Even though it was crowded, it didn't feel so as we were seated outside. If we pass by Tours again we will definitely make a return visit.
DESTINY GNANTÉ★★★★☆
Delicious food and excellent customer service - the waiters and waitresses are very friendly and helpful (deserve a good tip😉) They have a large selection of wine to accompany your meal. The only negative thing was that the non alcoholic cocktail was too watery - had more ice cubes than the cocktail. I recommend it for all ages and groups
Guy Davies★★★★☆
The food was excellent and the service mostly great. It was only the delay to one item that let it down a little. We have been traveling and this was our final night so we had seen most of the items on the menu elsewhere so both went for the fish and chips. It's not usually a great choice in France but this was excellent. The starters from the tapas choices were also excellent. Well worth the visit.
Roderick Reid★★★★★
We thought this was just going to be a bog standard eatery, but in fact very pleasantly surprised by a great burger. We thought the staff were all genuinely lovely and very much added to our enjoyment. A cold night outside and it would have been nice just to have been a wee bit warmer- but that’s my only criticism 😎

Avoid at all costs. Haven’t been let down by a buffalo grill before but this entrocote was borderline in edible. Service was slow an uninterested. Toilets were clean

The beef is overcooked and tastes so-so. Despite of the cheap price, they offer good service. They'll give you bread and salad soon after you've your seat. And the baked potato doesn't look appetizing.

How to Choose the Perfect Steakhouse in Tours

To truly enjoy your meal, you need to look beyond just the menu prices and consider the source of the meat and the style of the restaurant. French dining culture has specific nuances, especially regarding how beef is aged and cooked. Understanding these local preferences will significantly enhance your dining experience and ensure you get exactly what you are expecting when your plate arrives.

1. Understand French "Cuisson" (Doneness)

In France, the doneness scale is shifted one level compared to the US or UK. If you usually order "Medium," you should ask for "À point" (which translates to "to the point"). "Saignant" means rare (bloody), while "Bleu" is barely seared on the outside and nearly raw inside. Ordering "Bien cuit" (well done) is often frowned upon in high-end establishments, as it is considered to ruin the texture of premium beef.

2. Look for "Maturation" (Aging)

The best steakhouses in Tours will proudly advertise the aging process of their beef. Look for terms like "maturée" (aged) or "affinée" on the menu. Dry-aged beef ("maturation à sec") has a more concentrated, nutty flavor and a tender texture that wet-aged or fresh beef simply cannot match. If a restaurant highlights the number of days the meat has been aged, it is usually a sign of a kitchen that takes pride in its sourcing.

3. Check the Breed of Cattle

France is home to several noble breeds that are famous worldwide. In the Loire Valley, you will often see Charolais (white cattle known for lean, tender meat), Limousine, and occasionally Aubrac. If the menu specifies the breed, it is a good indicator of quality. These breeds are typically grass-fed and raised in open pastures, resulting in a distinct, clean flavor profile.

4. Evaluate the Sauce Selection

While a great steak can stand alone with just salt, French cuisine is famous for its sauces. A traditional steakhouse in Tours should offer classics like Sauce au Poivre (black pepper cream), Sauce Béarnaise, or Sauce Roquefort. The quality of the sauce—whether it is made in-house with fresh herbs and stock—often separates a good restaurant from a great one.

5. Consider the "Formule" (Set Menu)

Dining in France can be expensive, but many top restaurants offer a "Formule" or "Menu du Soir" which includes a starter, main course (often a cut of beef), and dessert. This is often the most economical way to experience a high-end steakhouse. Check if the set menu allows you to choose the beef dish or if it is a fixed cut like Onglet (hanger steak) or Bavette (flank steak), which are flavorful but require careful cooking.

6. Reserve Your Table

Tours is a bustling city, and the best tables—especially those on terraces or in intimate dining rooms—fill up quickly, particularly on weekends. The French dine later than many tourists, usually starting around 8:00 PM or 8:30 PM. Always call ahead or book online to avoid disappointment, and if you have a preference for a specific cut, ask if it is available when you book to avoid the kitchen running out.

The art of the steakhouse in Tours is a celebration of simplicity and quality. It is not about elaborate plating or molecular gastronomy; it is about the Maillard reaction on a perfectly seared crust and the unmistakable flavor of well-rested beef. When you find a restaurant that balances the rustic nature of the Loire Valley with the precision of French culinary technique, you have found a true gem.

As you explore the options listed above, remember that the best meal is one enjoyed slowly, paired with a robust red wine from Chinon or Bourgueil, which are just a short drive from the city. Bon appétit!
