10 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Tours

Tours may be celebrated across France for its Renaissance architecture and Loire Valley wines, but the city has quietly cultivated a vibrant plant-based and vegetable-forward dining scene. Whether you are a committed vegan, a vegetarian, or simply a traveler looking to lighten your palate between visits to the region’s famous châteaux, the culinary landscape here offers far more than a simple side salad. The shift toward fresh, locally sourced produce has inspired a wave of chefs who treat vegetables as the star of the plate rather than an afterthought.

Dining out in Tours as a vegetarian no longer means compromising on atmosphere or creativity. From cozy cafés tucked away on cobblestone side streets to elegant bistros serving artfully plated seasonal dishes, the city has embraced the global movement toward conscious eating. Many of these establishments work directly with producers in the Touraine region, ensuring that the tomatoes, asparagus, and goat cheeses on your plate have traveled only a short distance to reach you.

The beauty of the vegetarian scene in Tours lies in its diversity. You can find everything from hearty, rustic French cuisine adapted for meat-free diets to international flavors inspired by Middle Eastern, Asian, and Mediterranean traditions. This variety ensures that whether you are looking for a quick lunch, a romantic dinner, or a weekend brunch, there is a table waiting for you that aligns perfectly with your dietary preferences.

Navigating a French menu can sometimes feel daunting for those who avoid meat, as traditional dishes often rely heavily on charcuterie or meat-based stocks. However, the restaurants featured in this guide are transparent about their ingredients and eager to accommodate dietary restrictions. Many menus clearly label vegan and vegetarian options, and the staff are generally well-versed in explaining how dishes are prepared.

As a visitor, you will also find that these vegetarian-friendly spots are often situated near the city’s most beautiful landmarks. You can easily pair a visit to the stunning Cathédrale Saint-Gatien or a stroll through the Old Town with a meal at one of these standout addresses. The proximity of these eateries to cultural hubs makes them convenient stops on any itinerary.

To help you experience the best of what this gastronomic city has to offer, we have curated a list of the ten finest vegetarian restaurants in Tours. These selections have been chosen for their consistent quality, use of fresh ingredients, welcoming atmospheres, and their ability to satisfy even the most discerning palates.

Homely vegetarian food and loved the authentic simple dhal and veg curry. Hard to find something vegetarian and tasting very good in France. But this place is good at both. Merci beaucoup 🙏 Hare Krishna!

They welcomed us with so much warmth that the food tasted even better! Nonetheless, everything was amazing! I recommend the lasagna (I forgot to take a photo because I was busy eating 😂) — it seemed freshly made and the salad, specifically the purple cabbage, was the perfect side dish. I also recommend the "dark forest" cake! Being a vegetarian in France can be hard but places like this make our experience so much better! Thank you!

Hare Krishna! Wonderful Experience of staff hospitality and Spiritual vegetarian Cuisine. Nice variety of choices and delicious menus to suit everyone. Accommodated for many guests from the UK (May 22) and the service and delivery of items was second to none. Planning to visit again this year.

What a find! Spotlessly clean, a well furnished dining area with delightfully welcoming staff. The menu is not vast but the food is fresh and very tasty. No waitress service, you go to the counter and choose your menu which is then put onto plate(s) by the server. It has the set menu (Formule Gopal) which consisted of a a mixed salad, a light dhal soup, a poppadom, two veggie boulettes and a vegetable curry with rice. All was great and it was washed down with a Ginger beer. No alcohol here folks but you don't need it. Note for British clients, the food is not 'over-spiced which seems to be the mode in the UK. Nonetheless it was cracking.

We went a a group a few years back and they catered for 80 people. I loved it so much I just visited Gopal restaurant on Thursday on my way back to UK. I was treated with so much respect nd love and the staff served with a smile and are friendly. Happy to accommodate your smallest requirement. I love the food vegan and vegetarian. Call them in advance large groups. You will not be disappointed I give you my personal promise. Prabhu thank you so much for the recommendation of the cheese cake it was amazing. My daughter had most of ot and loved it.

This awesome place seemed to have opened in April. I was welcomed by two lovely people and they even gave me more vegan addresses to try. The food was flavourful, you know it’s the real deal when restaurants don’t even offer you salt/pepper etc and they 100% followed through. Tasty food. Affordable prices. Fully vegan. Please never change! Also food was so tasty I forgot to take a picture lol

Perfect! They saved us hungry tourists by kindly serving us only minutes before closing time, whereas the Tahina restaurant failed us by being closed during indicated opening times. Lion et Papillon gave us excellent friendly service (in English), had high quality vegan food, great taste and flavors and all home made. They can easily make the meals a couple euro’s more because it’s really affordable. Only was €16 for 2 large meals. Bought some extras for the culture. Thanks a lot! Merci Merci!!!

I was glad to find this vegan place while on vacation in Tours! They had filling sandwiches and overall the food was quite good (and at a good price). The cookies were dry, though.

Fantastic experience in this restaurant! The decor is cozy: lots of wood, candles and very nice pottery. The food was healthy and aestetically pleasing, especially the salads (the chicken one was great: many ingredients mixed together). The service was even better: friendly and warm, great menu suggestions. I highly recommend this spot especially for brunch with a girlfriend.

An unique restaurant, with a very nice "Scandinavian" atmosphere, in the historical centre of Tours! The quality of food is superb; especially recommended the bowl menu where you can choose base/protein/condiments/sauce that better fit your tastes. Will return!

Nice restaurant, good vibes, nice decoration, a bit expensive for what's served on the plate.

Amazing organic grocery store with ma Y organic products and organic fruit and organic vegetables. Also they make an organic meal of the day available and it's perfect for on the go and it's also organic. They also have a refill section to ensure we use less packaging 👏 The staff and owner are super friendly. I highly recommend to pop in and stock up on your needs. They are very careful about the products they sell ensuring that they are as natural as possible, without industrial chemicals etc. I am very happy to have found this store in a beautiful part of town. ❤️💯

A really lovely brunch! We opted for the set menu with a hot drink, a fruit juice, and three plates of our choice (three savory and three sweet), all for €21. The plates were delicious, well-prepared, and made with organic and local ingredients. The portions were just right, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Only the tartine platter was a bit underwhelming, but that's to be expected. My only complaint was that chai and matcha lattes weren't included in the set menu.

Servers are super nice!! The place is decorated in a very fun way and its very big with a super nice terrace and great playlist. The galettes are good, not incredible but for the price, you couldn’t ask for more. I will come back when Im back at Tours
Minh Tú Ngô★★★★★
The galettes and crepes are delicious and authentic with affordable price. The staff is very nice and sincere. The restaurant decoration is especially original and unique.
Izzy Carosi★☆☆☆☆
Waited over half an hour just to have someone take our order, the place wasn't busy at all (us and one other couple sat outside). Staff sat outside eating on the table behind us, while we were clearly waiting to order (same staff sat us down). Had to ask them if we could place our order and felt like we were bothering them (I understand they have to have a break but others had been seated after us and had been served straight away). When our galettes came mine tasted strongly of plastic, it had a really unpleasant flavour and I couldn't finish it. Not a great experience.

Voir une nouvelle histoire commencer ici me touche.

Really enjoyed my Valentine’s Day meal here! Special menu. They accommodated us even after being full. Very sweet! Food was well seasoned. Kept true to its afghan roots but had French influence. Looking forward to going back to try the other dishes.
Zoë Oliver★★★★★
One of the best meals I've had in years, and by far the best one in Tours during my week long stay. I believe a meat eater would enjoy all the dishes we tried, and they did have a few meat items, but as a vegetarian in Tours this was a godsend. We had basically eaten nothing but cheese in various forms for three meals a day for the week here (which is not actually as great as it sounds), and were thrilled with the complex, delicious, healthy and filling options here. I walked away astounded by the food. Myself and another guest got the three course option each, so after trying 6 dishes plus their house blend Afghan tea, my mind is blown. Also, can recommend the Afghan primitivo wine, it was so good! Do recommend reservations, but we were lucky to get a table for two without. The ambiance is surprising given the outside appearance and it's location, what a cute oasis inside! Pictures don't do it justice. The server was so gracious and kind with our French language barrier. He took the time to translate every item from Afghan/French to us, helped us identify what squash was in one of the dishes, told us his method of making the fabulous Firni dessert (to die for), and spoke to me about Afghan wine varietals, all through his own language barrier. What a lovely date night, a meal I'll remember for a long time, and a welcome vegetarian's haven in this town. Would absolutely come here every time we're in town.

We were staying in Tours for two days. Right next to our hotel was an Afghan restaurant, which immediately caught my eye. My parents are from Afghanistan, and I grew up enjoying incredible Afghan food, so it has always held a special place in my heart. I’m happy to say this place exceeded my expectations. The meal brought back so many childhood memories, with all the distinctive flavors that make Afghan cuisine so special. What I especially loved was the French touch. It felt both authentic and elevated at the same time. The service was warm and attentive, there were plenty of vegetarian options, it was nicely decorated and the location is very convenient, just a short walk from the train station. Whether you're trying Afghan food for the first time or looking to reconnect with familiar flavors, this is a wonderful spot. Highly recommended! 😊🙌

We looked for a breakfast spot because our hotel breakfast was not good. We had to wait until they opened at 10am, but it was very worth it. All of the food was amazing. The pancakes were light crisp and decedent. The eggs were perfect eggs and the bacon was candied a little bit and superb. Highly recommend! Also it was very nice getting to see the people who work there make each other laugh.

Came here a few times for coffees during my short stay in Tours. Had a few variations of their coffee: batch brew, long black, and flat white. They were all great and my personal preference was flat white in a small cup (which had less amount of milk than their standard version). The latte art of milk based drinks is always a welcome bonus, not just a pleasure to look at, it demonstrates the frothing technique and more importantly their passion in making coffees. They also have beautifully presented cakes and cookies (although I didn’t try any).
Karsten Lang Pedersen★★★★★
Everything on the menu is home made and very delicious. The coffee pulled to perfection from a light roast bean. An airconditioned section with games and activities is available in the back of the cafe.

We had an absolutely delightful dinner at Chez Madie. The service was very friendly, helpful, and professional. The draft beer selection was good. The lambic was delicious. The steak was tender and delicious. The eggplant was very tasty. The perfectly prepared fritters were crunchy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. The desserts were sweet delights. The ambiance was fantastic. The dining room was very nicely decorated, and the acoustics were great for a pleasant dinner conversation. Great people, great food, and great location.

Wonderful ! Best restaurant since a while ! The atmosphere is very pretty, nice chairs and table, beautiful room. The service is amazing with explanations about the food and the country. The food is tasty, astonishing, sweet and full of spice, not in a hot way, just succulent. We took a full vegan menu, starter, main course and desert. Lot of choices, each delicious. Great wine, afghan wines are tasteful, as well as the cocktails and tea served with sweets. Definitely coming back!

Great food , I like the twist on Afghan cuisine and small menu , but the waiting time for food is too much ( meal took 1h30) , I know it’s small team !

The food was so amazing I totally forgot to take any photos. The waitress spoke perfect English and described the dishes expertly to us and had an opinion and wonderful explanations. Each dish was wonderfully prepared and very delicious and a generous portion. Highly recommend.

I am someone who struggles to finish my plate, so if i’m saying they didn’t give enough food…that’s a problem. I was given 4 (maybe 5) little bites of chicken. That being said, with what little food was given it was really good. Service was slow and nothing to write home about. We were a table full of Americans (besides one other person), so that could have been the problem. If you’re looking for a healthy meal, that’s plated nicely, and cool environment, definitely try out this place. If you’re starving and looking to munch, go to Döner Kabob down the street.

Gorgeous food - refined, but generous in its flavours and textures. Lovely waiter and I enjoyed the ambience and trying the Afghan wine. Overall a lovely experience - a real treat ☺️

Tips for Enjoying Vegetarian Dining in Tours

While finding vegetarian food in Tours is easier than ever, a little local knowledge can elevate your dining experience from good to exceptional. Understanding the rhythm of French dining and the specific nuances of the local food culture will help you make the most of your culinary journey.

Book ahead for dinner. Many of the best vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Tours are small, intimate spaces run by passionate owners. Tables fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during the summer tourist season. A quick phone call or online reservation ensures you won’t miss out on a highly recommended spot.

Embrace the "Formule" at lunch. If you want to experience high-quality cooking without breaking the bank, look for the lunchtime set menus, often called a "formule" or "menu du midi." These typically offer a starter and main course, or main course and dessert, at a significantly reduced price compared to à la carte dining in the evening.

Look beyond the word "végétarien." While many restaurants now explicitly label their vegetarian dishes, some traditional French bistros offer naturally meat-free dishes without marketing them as such. Keep an eye out for dishes like tarte fine aux légumes, gratin de courge, or hearty lentil salads, which are often vegetarian by nature.

Don’t skip the cheese course. If you are a lacto-vegetarian, you are in one of the best regions in the world for goat cheese. The Loire Valley is famous for its chèvre, including AOP-protected varieties like Sainte-Maure de Touraine. Ask your server for a plate of local cheeses paired with a crisp Sancerre or Vouvray for an authentic Touraine experience.

Check seasonal opening hours. Tours is a university town, and some of the more casual, health-focused cafés may close during August or reduce their hours during school holidays. It is always wise to check the restaurant’s social media or website for the most up-to-date information before making a special trip.

Exploring the vegetarian restaurants of Tours offers a unique lens through which to view the city’s evolving identity. It is a place where the reverence for French culinary tradition meets a modern, health-conscious sensibility, resulting in meals that are both satisfying and memorable. The commitment to local agriculture and seasonal produce ensures that the menu you see in the spring will look beautifully different when you return in the autumn.

Whether you are strolling along the banks of the Loire or recovering from a day of wine tasting in Vouvray, the city’s green dining scene provides the perfect balance. You will leave Tours not only impressed by its history and architecture but also by the realization that vegetarian cuisine in France is alive, thriving, and absolutely delicious.
