12 Best Cheap Hotels in Montpellier

Montpellier has a way of pulling you in. With its sun-bleached medieval squares, vibrant tram lines, and a youthful energy driven by one of Europe’s oldest universities, the city offers a distinct blend of southern French charm and modern dynamism. Unlike the glitzy resort towns of the Côte d’Azur, Montpellier feels lived-in and authentic, making it a favorite for travelers who want culture without the pretension.

However, a trip to the capital of the Occitanie region often comes with a price tag that reflects its desirability. During the summer festival season or the academic calendar, hotel prices in the historic center can skyrocket. Yet, savvy travelers know that you do not need to break the bank to experience the best of this Mediterranean hub.

The key to budget travel here lies in understanding the city’s geography. The historic center, known as l’Écusson, is highly walkable, but the introduction of an efficient tram system has made the outer neighborhoods incredibly accessible. By staying just a few stops away from Place de la Comédie, you can often cut your accommodation costs in half while gaining a more local perspective.

This guide focuses on practicality. We have evaluated properties based on guest reviews, location connectivity, cleanliness, and value for money to bring you a list of establishments that prioritize comfort without the luxury markup. Whether you are a backpacker, a couple on a weekend getaway, or a business traveler watching your expense account, there is an option here for you.

The following selections range from trendy hostels with private rooms to budget-friendly chain hotels that offer consistency. What they all share is a commitment to providing a clean, safe, and welcoming base from which to explore the city.

Below, you will find the best cheap hotels in Montpellier that prove affordability does not mean sacrificing quality or location.

Great service, showers are very clean. Leila specifically at reception was very welcoming and helpful at all times. i

Worst experience I’ve ever had with a hotel. There was a lot of noise very late into the night. People yelling in the hallways and slamming doors. I paid for a towel that I never got because there was no one at the front desk. The television didn’t work, the heater didn’t either and because of that I couldn’t sleep at all. Even with a blanket on, it was way too cold. I wouldn’t go there again if it was free. I am replying to your dishonest response under the original review. I am adding a screenshot of the payment for the towel you said wasn’t in your system. Your dishonesty is just as unsatisfying as the stay in your hotel.
sara gomez★☆☆☆☆
A very disappointing experience. At late hours of the night, continuous noise from children running and crying, doors opening and slamming, and adults talking loudly in the corridors made rest impossible. There was no staff or management present to address the situation. Overall, the atmosphere was disrespectful. I would advise choosing a different place to stay.

We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. The breakfasts were rich, varied, and delicious, with excellent coffee and a good selection of juices. The lobby is equipped with a microwave, and there is also an option to purchase ready-to-eat meals and snacks, so it is almost impossible to go hungry. The reception staff were exceptionally friendly, professional, and always willing to help or provide useful information. Unfortunately, we do not remember everyone's names, but we would especially like to thank Ivanna for her kindness and support. The air conditioning in the room worked perfectly, the soundproofing was very good, and the Wi-Fi connection was fast and reliable. Whenever needed, we could comfortably work on our laptops in the lobby. The hotel is located in a quiet area, which made our stay even more relaxing. We would be happy to stay here again and highly recommend this hotel to other travelers.
Mr. M★★★☆☆
The hotel is fine for a quick stay, but very basic. The room was small and felt a bit worn, and the soundproofing could definitely be better. Cleanliness was good, though nothing impressive. Staff were polite but the service is minimal, as expected for a budget hotel. The location is not so convenient very far way from the city center was say in the name center, but overall it's just a simple place to sleep - nothing more. The rooms, for a family of 3 with a teenager, i believe a bit more attention to the room size.
Jennierubbyyy★★★★★
Our stay at the hotel was very pleasant overall. The hotel was comfortable and well-maintained, and the staff were exceptionally kind and helpful throughout our visit. We also appreciated that it is conveniently located near the Montpellier Sud-de-France Gare station. We truly enjoyed our stay and would gladly stay here again.
Peter Lindsey★★★★☆
Overall the experience was good given the fact that it's a Budget hotel. It's not right in the centre, but the walk into the centre is only about 30 minutes and quite pleasant. I expected it to be noisier, but it was quiet - very good soundproofing of the rooms. The breakfast is basic, but again it's a Budget, so it's what you expect.

My lover and I were looking for lodging near the Montpellier airport because of a delayed flight and were happy to find the wonderful gem in Montpellier. The place had a really nice atmosphere, a bungaloo vibe and it was clean. The price was amazing. The breakfast was very good and we had some of the best bread we have ever tried. Unsure if it was bread or pastry. All in all, enjoyed our stay very much!

I dropped to 4 stars for the room because for some reason the bathroom didn't have a door handle, so it just kind of slowly swung open. And the air con wasn't great, but it was really trying - and it was 37 degrees. I stayed at the ibis budget, and you get what you pay for. It's fine. Good pressure in the shower, decent size room, comfy bed - slept very well. No wardrobe or drawers, just a few hangers on a bar. Had a TV, window, desk. Nothing crazy, but for the price and a quick stay - absolutely fine. It was clean and comfortable. Staff were kind and helpful, 15 minutes from Montpellier old town by Tram. Easy to navigate here. Would recommend for budget travellers that want to get away, but probably would spend a little more for somewhere with a pool or better aircon if visiting in the heat again.

Always have a good experience at the Ibis as well as at the Ibis Budget prés d'arènes Montpellier In February I stayed at Ibis Budget for 10 days and I really appreciate the hotel and all the staff, specially the people working in the breakfast room. They are very friendly, helpful and very correct and that's a big 👍 to start a day. Thank you 🙏🏻 Also a big thank you for the reception staff for your services 🙏
Cristina★★★★★
The parking feels safe (although I think the exit is completely open?) and there is even a bike cage, so it is perfect for people travelling with a full car. The room itself was quite clean and comfortable for the price paid, although the corridor has an unpleasant smell. The receptionist, Christine, was lovely upon arrival 🙂
Juan O.G.★★☆☆☆
Hotel is very convenient if you need a stop over in your trip inside France. Very close to highway, with nice facilities and some indoor sport equipment also!. Parking lot is great and has secured access. However, reason for me to give 2 stars, is related to cleanliness. My bed was full of bugs. When I was going to sleep I saw several of them, and decided to kill them. I thought everything was clear and went to sleep.....2 days later I discovered several bites in a variety of locations of my body.
Manuel Gutiérrez★★★★☆
Great hotel for stopping on the way. Closed, well illuminated, surveilled parking for cars, and even closed spaces for bike or moped parking. The rooms are good for the price too. A tram stop nearby will bring you to the city center in no time while your car is safe.

There were hairs on the bed linen. A towel had been used, and the breakfast hadn’t been prepared properly, despite there being few guests. The fruit was already starting to go off.

This is a great hotel just on the outskirts of Montpellier. Room was very clean with a massive bed. Very nice breakfast selection. Staff very helpful.

Nice pool and good service. The room was ok-ish (if nothing else is available around) but overall I would not recommend the hotel. Room was smelly (damp smell), dusty and overall not very clean. Gave the impression that the hotel is not being taken care of.

!!BOOK ONLINE and NOT in person!! There's a significant price difference! I was quite disappointed to find out in the morning how expensive our less-than-12-hour-stay-without-breakfast was. Do yourself a favour and book online. The hotel staff was very friendly and the room was simple and small, but clean. We asked the staff if there were any other discounts they could provide or include breakfast, there wasn't anything offered. They said if we booked online it would've been 50EUR less!! I find that to be such a rip off. I've sent a message into Best Western via their website. We'll see if anything happens. If you're travelling to the hotel at night, it is a dark and mysterious area, and you have to page them to open the metal barrier. Not something a Canadian was used to. LOL
Stephen Burgess★★★★☆
A nice hotel for an overnight stop on the way down to Spain. We stopped on a Saturday evening so the restaurant wasn't open but the guy on reception prepared us a large cheese and ham board with fresh bread and an apple Tart with ice-cream for desert so no problem at all. He was a star. Loved the effort that he made.

This hotel has an amazing closed parking and very comfortable rooms and excellent price performance ratio . Proximity to Motorway is another benefit. Self checkin while arriving late is extremely useful
Tina Handley★☆☆☆☆
Shocking, the worst B&B hotel we’ve ever stayed in. We’ve stayed in many of them in Spain and France and always had a good experience until now. There are some terrible reviews of this hotel but they reply to them saying that they learn from the feedback which helps them improve, so that gives you confidence that you won’t experience the same, but clearly that is not the case ! The only good thing about this hotel is the staff who are super friendly and nice. Otherwise there is nothing good about it. The room was the most cramped I’ve ever stayed in anywhere, absolutely no room to move or put anything except under the bed. The bathroom too was tiny although big shower so at least that was something. The sheets and towels seemed clean thankfully but the toilet was filthy with visible small spots of splattered excrement on the underside of the seat and something nasty and brown running from the cistern into the toilet bowl. The soap dispenser holder was broken so the soap bottle just sits at the side of the basin and you have to pick it up and squeeze it and it leaves unhygienic residue on the surface which is the only place you have to put your wash bag etc. The public toilet near to the breakfast area wasn’t much better, the wash basin looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a week with black grime and hairs around it. My husband has a breakfast, I do not, but always the breakfast at B&B hotels is really good value. This was not on a par with others. Only fresh fruit was apples, bacon was cold and like rubber. Queues at the one juice machine and one coffee machine. We paid 85€ for this tiny room and dirty facilities which is a lot more than we’ve paid for B&B Hotels of a far better standard. If I had paid 30€ for the room I would have expected the standard I experienced and not been surprised but to charge 85€ for this, in an industrial location is not acceptable. I rarely write bad reviews as often bad services can be a temporary issue or one off, but in this case and given the previous responses of the establishment to customers’ bad experiences, I feel it is justified to write what I have.
Giovanni Longoni★★★★☆
Our stay in the hotel was more than satisfying. Our 4-bed room was large, the bathroom was okay. Maybe one feature that should be done a little better is the cleaning of the room. Overall the judgement is very positive. Absolutely recommended
Pragya Rastogi★★★★☆
About 60 euros per night for a decent room in late July. Last minute reservation. No handwash in the room, that was strange. Hot water and good shower pressure. Towel provided. Air conditioning okay. Carpet was stained in a couple of places. Code operated room, no physical keys - that was awesome. Take the #2 tram then #51 bus to reach here. Isolated area so I'd recommend grabbing food before coming to the hotel.
Salinda Clavel★★★★☆
We booked the room for two. The bed and the bathroom were the set up for one. The second set is put on the side, not a problem, we managed. Then when I pulled down the 2nd pillow from above the hanger closet, a piece of Kleenex fell with it. Didn't dare to verify if it's used or not, we just left it there. That's my only concern for the stay. The rest was great. The receptionist, the guy at the breakfast and also the breakfast itself. Thank you.

Fantastic little find in an old bourgouise manor. Very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are quaintly decorated and comfortable. Breakfast was fresh and coffee made to order. Easy walking distance into the town center. A great stay!

I was very satisfied with the service, price, and location. Everything was smooth and exceeded my expectations. I can wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone looking for accommodation in Montpellier.
Gustavo Pugliesi Sachs★★★★★
Great service. Even though we were expected at around 7, we arrived at 5:30 and they let us in and arranged for our room to ready while we were having breakfast (way earlier than what was agreed). The room was really comfortable and very clean. Very well located at walking distance from the train station (unless, of course, you're carrying all your luggage), close to tramway lines and commerce. The crew in the hotel are very nice and helpful.
jessae brown★★★★☆
The rooms were tiny but adorable. The front desk was helpful and multilingual. We had a room with a separate patio/terrace entrance which unfortunately invited an unwelcome person from the street to walk into our room in the middle of the night (could have been a drunk guest of the hotel who was confused) so be sure to lock all your doors! Despite this experience I would stay here again.

JOST Hotel Montpellier is a vibrant and stylish hotel with a unique personality. The modern rooms are comfortable and thoughtfully designed, while the lively bar and restaurant create a welcoming atmosphere. The generous breakfast buffet is an excellent way to start the day. Throughout the hotel, everything appears clean, fresh and well maintained. If you're looking for a contemporary hotel with character and a relaxed vibe, JOST is an excellent choice for a stay in Montpellier.
Thomas Altenburger★★★★★
Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of options to choose from... like different types of bread and spreads, cereals, pancakes, croissants, yogurts, and more. Actually, the breakfast buffet felt comparable to that of a higher-end hotel, so I haven't seen hostels where you get so much to eat. The restaurant and bar have a great atmosphere, making it a pleasant place to relax. The background music (a mix of chill-out, pop, and house) was nice too. You can also order food there in the evening. I ordered a pizza, which I really enjoyed. The location is very convenient as well, being close to the railway station. In the dorm itself, the hallway outside of the sleeping room was a bit noisy, so at night you should not be too loud in order to not disturb the others.
Carol H★★★★★
I stayed at Jost in Montpellier for 4 nights at the end of December. I am a mature solo traveler and really appreciate that Jost invests in good mattresses for the travellers who chose to stay in the dorms. I always have a good sleep at a Jost location. The staff at Jost are great. Helpful and friendly. The hostel is a few minutes walk from the train station on a walkable grade and there is a good grocery store close by. It is a 15 minute walk to town but there are trams close by too. The dorm beds are spacious and comfortable. Great blackout curtains and all plugs worked. The guest kitchen was a bit of a mess when I first arrived but it was the holiday season and they fixed the problem as soon as it was mentioned. Kitchen dishes and cutlery was in short supply. Overall, Jost Hostel is a very good safe place to stay while visiting Montpellier.
Harry Johnson★★★★☆
A modern and lively hotel with a good location near the train station and city center. Rooms are clean and tidy but often quite small, so it’s better suited for short stays. The strongest impression comes from the common areas and design, while noise and occasional crowds can be an issue for light sleepers.
irina lezaic★★☆☆☆
We stayed at Jost Hotel two times both in the 8 people dorm. Once for a night where the room was in good condition and the ac was working fine. On the second stay for two nights we had bedbugs in our bed, we reported it to the receptionist and later filed a complaint through their Website. Jost never responded. I'm dissapointed in the service that was provided, bedbugs caused us a lot of hastle and mental strain and our issues was ignored.

Basic rooms but clean and well maintained. Decent continental breakfast. Can't quibble based on price of the rooms. Brilliant location right by all tram stops so easy access across Montpellier. Shares facilities with the hotel next door so has rooftop bar and gym available.
Agnieszka★★★★☆
Great localisation and very polite front desk employees. In my room the bathroom was freshly renovated and very pleasant, but the room itself could use some extra help. There was a giant bleach stain on the carpet and dust in the corners.
Gabrielle Weinberger★★★★★
I had a wonderful friendly and helpful welcome here at the Campanile and highly recommend this hotel. Great experience !
Natasha G★★★★☆
I liked the hotel. The location is great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms are good and practical. The hotel has a spa - massage and sauna for an extra charge, but the gym is free. My only remark is to consider offering more vegan options for breakfast. I could only eat the jams and some bread and had to ask for soya/oat milk every time. Otherwise, apart from that, I had a very pleasant stay. I would certainly consider staying again and hopefully by then, there will be more vegan options.
Lise Hove★★★★☆
Nice hotel, right by the train station and by the entrance to the old city. Friendly staff, we arrived early and they prioritized cleaning our room first so we could check in. The aircon is nice in the heart, bit a bit weak, even at max, so the temperature at night was too hot. We didn't have the breakfast, but it looked a bit unimpressive.

Perfect hotel to stay in for 1 night if you are travelling. We requested a baby crib, and the hotel kindly supplied it free of charge. The facilities at the hotel are nice, very well-maintained, and clean. The beds are amazingly comfortable, and the cleanliness of the room is exceptionally good. B&B hotels are pet friendly, something that we love too. We will come back to this hotel in our next trip. Thanks for everything

Fantastic service from the owner of the hotel... Incredible friendliness, helpful and 5 star service provided. You can witness how someone goes the extra mile to make you feel comfortable. Many thanks also for using your breakfast room for our work meeting during the entire morning.
Oskar Blickfeldt★★★★☆
Rated based on the price, which was the lowest on our trip through Europe with car. Close to the highway, big fenced parking area and room with good beds. Not really family friendly or sound proof, as there was several kinds of mysterious people awake coughing and wandering around the halls at night. The walls in our room were of white painted concrete, and the worn bathroom fitted only 1 person - nevertheless the service was good, the room was clean and self service options makes it worth the price, barely
Bernard Spilsbury★★★★☆
Ideally situated just a short distance from the old autoroute. A clean room, good clean bedding, clean bathroom. Good price and good value. Breakfast enough, inexpensive. Very friendly staff.

Horrible experience. From the moment we arrived, everything went wrong. The room we were given was completely dirty, we genuinely thought someone was still staying there. Hours later, at night, we discovered that the air conditioning wasn’t working. We went to the front desk several times asking for assistance. Each time, a staff member came upstairs, checked the basic settings on the remote, and left without actually fixing the problem. This happened at least three times. By 2AM, the room was still unbearably hot and stuffy, we couldn’t sleep. We were a group of six, split between a four-person room and an extremely cramped two-person room. Since the air conditioning in the larger room never worked, all six of us ended up trying to sleep in the tiny two-person room, with four people sleeping ON THE FLOOR. The following morning, the only compensation we were offered was breakfast. We are still waiting for a refund. This was, without question, one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve ever had. The reservation was under the name: Luciana Silvestri or Agustin Rebello.
Buyuk Sorun★★★★★
Nicely looking hotel with simple but good rooms close to the city center. Breakfast consisted of ham, cheese, eggs, add ons (jams, honey etc.) and pastries. It wasn't a lot, but it was for sure tasty. I'd definitely come back there.
Neda★★★☆☆
I give 3 stars just for the location and the fresh prepared granola. In booking website it was mentioned that there is a parking. You need to be cautious if your car is a bmw ( a 5 meter) car you cannot park in the parking lot. You will be considered as a big car. With the discount of the hotel you can park in a public parking spot 22 euros ( with discounts). If you want to put your luggage in the storage room the day of check out, you need to pay 4 euros extra. You cannot drive to the hotel entrance and you need to carry your luggage from st roche parking to the hotel. Rooms are also small.and if you have 2 luggage both luggage cannot be opened at the same time! In general I didn’t have a good time there
Matt Roberts★★☆☆☆
If you want a cheap place to stay for the night, this isn't bad, but honestly, it's not a good hotel. The room wasn't nice. It has a weird smell, was under construction (unfinished painting) and was very basic. Good location though. Definitely wouldn't recommend
Fabio Diglio★★★★★
Eklo Montpellier was a very pleasant surprise. I loved their concept and my stay was over my expectations. The place (it’d be reductive to define it as just a hotel) - very well located in the heart of the city - is super cool and has a warm ambience. PROs 🔝 - location, in front of the Gare Saint Roch and close to Place de la Comédie (the main city square) - shared-room has a great space organization - on-site restaurant/bar - large terrace - coworking space - night activity program (DJ sets, Comedy Club, karaoke etc.) CONs 👎 Nothing to report/complain about 😃

my experience at halt hotel was great! the hotel staff was super friendly and helpful, and our room was cleaned well. the restaurant area is cute with many games and the outdoor seating is so cute with picnic tables and 2 hammocks. the breakfast was amazing, including eggs, fresh fruits, pastries and more.
James Dooms★★★☆☆
We were just passing through on our way back to Spain and just needed a place to stay for the night. I am all for supporting local businesses which is why we decided to choose this place. The staff were very nice and the whole checkin process was very smooth. The rooms and facilities are a bit dated and could do with an update but nothing too bad. The area is in an industrial area of Montpelier close to other hotels so not much around. The only downside of the hotel is the sound isolation between the rooms. We got given a room on the ground floor close to the door where people can come in during the night. The walls between the rooms are very thin so you can hear a lot. We were woken up by the guests in the next room, blasting French rap music and constantly coming in and out of the building. We couldn’t get back to sleep anymore so missed the breakfast and just decided to get back on the road. The staff apologised but there was not much of compensation. I would advise to bring some earplugs if you plan to stay here.
Raúl Fernández Ballesteros★☆☆☆☆
I have to give a really low score because of the awful experience I had during my stay. Middle of the night I woke up with ants in my bed… No need to evaluate anything else. I couldn’t sleep after that. The receptionist told me in the morning I should have called to the phone for a room change… this was the only advise I got. I was not on the mood to discuss further, but I guess I did not pay to sleep with ants… or to call middle of the night to anyone… I’m sorry because maybe maybe I was not lucky… but, I don’t recommend this hotel. Too expensive also for the quality offered.
Alexandre Sasseville★★★★★
Staff was very friendly and courteous. The room was clean. We can hear a bit the people in the other rooms but it is very subtle. The breakfast was great and I would recommend it. Overall a great experience.

Tips for Booking a Cheap Hotel in Montpellier

Securing a great deal in Montpellier requires more than just clicking the first booking site you see. The city has a unique rhythm dictated by its student population, business conferences, and seasonal tourism. By understanding how these factors influence pricing, you can position yourself to snag a room at a fraction of the standard rate. Here are essential strategies to keep your budget intact while ensuring a comfortable stay in this beautiful French city.

1. Travel During the Shoulder Seasons
Montpellier enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which makes it tempting to visit in July and August. However, these months see peak prices and crowded streets. The best balance of good weather and low rates occurs in late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October). During these windows, you can often enjoy sunny days perfect for terrace dining while paying significantly less for accommodation than you would in the high summer season.

2. Leverage the Tram System for Location
Staying directly on the Place de la Comédie is lovely, but it is expensive. Montpellier’s tram network is one of the best in France, and it is free for residents on weekends, with affordable tickets for visitors. Look for budget hotels near tram stops on Lines 1, 2, or 3 in neighborhoods like Beaux-Arts, Boutonnet, or near the Stade de la Mosson. You can be in the heart of the historic center in under 15 minutes while saving upwards of 40% on your nightly rate.

3. Avoid University Move-In and Exam Periods
Montpellier is a massive university town with tens of thousands of students. At the end of August and early September, as well as during mid-December and late May, families flood the city to help students move or visit for graduations. Hotels, especially budget ones, sell out quickly and raise their rates. If your dates are flexible, avoid these academic peaks to find both availability and better prices.

4. Book Direct for Breakfast Deals
While third-party booking platforms are great for comparison, they often strip away the perks. Many budget chain hotels in Montpellier offer "breakfast included" rates or small discounts when you book directly through their official websites or by phone. Given that a French breakfast of coffee, croissants, and juice can cost €10 to €15 per person in a café, securing a free or discounted hotel breakfast can significantly lower your daily spending.

5. Consider the "Apart-Hotel" Alternative
If you are staying for more than two nights, traditional hotels might not be the cheapest option. Montpellier has a strong selection of apart-hotels (apparthotels) and residence-style accommodations located just outside the center. These rooms typically include a small kitchenette. Being able to prepare simple meals using fresh produce from the local Halles Castellane market can save you a substantial amount of money on dining out, effectively subsidizing your travel budget.

Montpellier is a city that rewards the curious traveler. It is a place where you can wander through narrow medieval streets, stumble upon hidden mansions, and finish your day with a glass of local Picpoul de Pinet without feeling like you have been overcharged. Finding a cheap hotel here is not about settling for less; it is about spending smart so you have more left over for experiences.

By choosing one of the budget-friendly accommodations listed above and applying these booking tips, you can unlock the very essence of the South of France. You will find that the money you save on your room can be better spent on museum entries, tram rides to the nearby beaches of Palavas-les-Flots, or simply extending your stay in this endlessly fascinating city.
