15 Things to Do in Montpellier

Sun-drenched squares, honey-colored medieval architecture, and the energy of one of France’s largest student populations make Montpellier an irresistible destination in the Occitanie region. Just a few miles from the Mediterranean coast, this vibrant city blends a rich historical past with a forward-thinking, contemporary spirit. Unlike many French cities built from stone, Montpellier is a city of elegant townhouses, hidden courtyards, and grand boulevards that feel distinctly aristocratic.

As the capital of the Hérault department, Montpellier offers visitors a unique mix of cultural depth and laid-back southern living. You can spend your morning exploring one of Europe’s oldest medical schools, your afternoon lounging in a classical French garden, and your evening sipping local wine on a bustling café terrace. It is a city designed for wandering, with a pedestrian-friendly historic center that rewards curiosity at every turn.

This guide is curated to help you experience the very best of the city, whether you are visiting for a weekend or settling in for a longer stay. We focus on attractions that offer genuine local character, historical significance, and the kind of atmosphere that makes Montpellier so memorable. From iconic landmarks to lesser-known gems, each recommendation is chosen to give you an authentic taste of life in this Mediterranean metropolis.

You will find a mix of outdoor spaces, architectural marvels, and cultural institutions that reflect the city’s diverse identity. Whether you are traveling solo, as a couple, or with family, Montpellier provides an accessible and welcoming environment. The compact nature of the center means you can see a great deal without ever needing to use public transport, allowing you to soak in the ambiance at your own pace.

Practical details matter when planning a trip, so we have included insights into what makes each location special and how to approach your visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as the historic center’s narrow streets and polished stone pavements are best explored on foot. The city enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year, so light layers and sun protection will serve you well in most seasons.

Read on to discover the essential experiences that define Montpellier, from its grandest square to its quietest cloisters. Each entry below has been selected for its ability to connect you with the city’s history, culture, and everyday rhythms. These are the places that locals hold dear and that visitors remember long after they have returned home.

When visiting Montpellier visiting this square is a must. Sometimes there is an open theatre performing but always it is bustling with some activity. All the buildings in the surrounding area are majestic.

Place de la Comédie is the lively heart of Montpellier and one of the best places to experience the city's atmosphere. Surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, cafés, shops, and street performers, the square is always full of energy. It's the perfect place to relax, people watch, or simply soak in the local vibe. The iconic Three Graces Fountain and the beautiful Opéra Comédie make the square especially picturesque. I enjoyed strolling around both during the day and in the evening, when the buildings are beautifully illuminated and the atmosphere becomes even more vibrant. Whether you're visiting Montpellier for the first time or just passing through, Place de la Comédie is a place you shouldn't miss. It's a wonderful starting point for exploring the city and truly captures the charm of southern France.

Place de la Comédie is the beating heart of Montpellier. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, with the Opéra Comédie and the Three Graces fountain as focal points. Always full of energy, from morning coffee crowds to evening strolls, and well-connected with the city’s tram lines. A perfect place to start exploring the old town or just to sit and people-watch.

Nice & quiet early morning - a lone classical guitar echoing around the plaza

Well we arrived in Montpellier on the 26/06/25 first impressions were wow what’s a beautiful place . The buildings within the Place de la Comédie are just stunning the detail in the stone work is incredible. There’s a great vibe about this place . There’s lots of restaurants around the huge square . It’s a must to visit . There’s ample car parking at the underground car parks . This won’t be the last time we visit Montpelier there’s so much more to see .

Nice garden. Could be more educational. I didn't like that they let people to leave paparazzi notes (rubbish) inside the oldest tree of the garden.

Beautiful Botanical Garden that is completely free. Features lots of different plant life and a pond with various fish.
Austen Urry★★☆☆☆
Dry. In serious need of maintenance. It might be the time of year, but the whole place was really dry and the plants looked like they were on the brink of death. The whole garden really looked like it needed a great deal of maintenance, from general grass cutting and weeding, to repairing concrete and fixing broken watering systems. All in all, unfortunately I would say it’s not really worth the time in Montpellier.

Inside there were more children than fish. It is nice to visit (especially the storm simulator), but the place is small and definitely not worth 20 euro. We finished the tour in about an hour.
Libor Frebort★★★★★
The exhibition is really nice. Many aquariums including the main one which is from the ground floor to the first floor with sharks, rays, sawfish and other fish. Many interactive things including a very suggestive sailing in a storm. Reserve at least 2 hours or more for your visit. Price-performance ratio more than good. I definitely recommend it.

Stunning view of the city. The best place to see a sunset and plenty of space for the kids to run. There are a lot of shades to relax after a long day of walking.
Shaodun Lin★★★★★
Promenade du Peyrou is one of Montpellier’s most iconic and elegant landmarks , a majestic open square that feels like the city’s grand balcony. Set on a natural terrace at the western edge of the old town, it offers sweeping views, beautiful architecture, and a calm atmosphere that makes it perfect for an afternoon stroll. What I love most is the blend of history and relaxation. The moment you step into the promenade, you’re greeted by wide open spaces lined with perfectly manicured trees, the impressive statue of Louis XIV, and the striking Château d’Eau with its aqueduct stretching into the distance. It’s a place where locals jog, families wander, and travelers soak in the unique charm of southern France. Whether you’re visiting for the views, photography, or simply a peaceful place to sit and breathe, Promenade du Peyrou never disappoints. Come during golden hour if you can , the light over the rooftops of Montpellier is unforgettable. A must-visit if you want to understand the soul and elegance of Montpellier.

A beautiful and well-maintained cathedral. Could easily spend more than an hour there. Be aware that they are closed for lunch. If you have time you should visit Montpellier's Faculty of Medicine which is the oldest practicing medical school in the world.
deniz alaaddinoğlu★★★★★
The cathedral was absolutely beautiful — the way the light filtered through created such a peaceful and powerful atmosphere. I genuinely felt the energy of the place. One of the highlights for me was the stunning organ, which was not only visually impressive but added to the sacred, timeless feeling of the church. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates architecture, spirituality, or just a moment of calm in the city.
Beat A. Schwendimann★★★★★
Enormous cathedral with unique architectural features. Back in the middle ages, the cathedral was fortified by the catholics against protestant attacks. Remnants of this fortification are the three huge towers (one collapsed) and the two rocket-like pillars. Beautiful stained glass windows. Beautiful and large organ.
Hans Jonathan★★★★★
It can be reached by 10-15 minutes walk from Place de la Comédie, it was a beautiful church from the outside. The main door is closed, but the huge pillar was very imposing. It is a good photo ops, as not many tourists venture here. This is a really old Gothic church with a lot of history built back in the 14th century. Try to visit here when exploring Montpellier, as it is impressive and worth visiting once.
Diane Lane★★★★★
Perfectly lovely Sunday mass. Sunlight streaming through the stained glass. The organ is felt through your heart.

One of my favorite places I had the honor of visiting during my Erasmus+ experience. I was very lucky to visit the museum in the first week of the month (when the visiting is free) and the security service was really friendly. One of them actually wanted me to see the Fallen Angel picture (which unfortunately was moved away prior to my visit, so it wasn't there sadly) and rushed together to the place it was supposed to be at the end of the program. He was also sad when he realised they moved the picture, but his willingness to help me were extremely comforting. Its a must visit for everyone that the opportunity of travelling in Montpellier. (They also have cute souvenirs)

Immensely impressed by this museum! You cannot tell me that you have been to Montpellier without visiting Musée Fabre! It is forbidden, illegal, disallowed and highly disregarded to say that sentence without having passed by to this museum! I was amazed by their diversity of art collections they possess, as well as the nice staff, beautiful walls and nicely designed building where everything seems to be well arranged! I thank you profoundly for this unforgettable experience!
David Smith★★★★★
Excellent, fairly large museum with paintings and more through the ages. An admission fee applies. To see it thoroughly would take 2 days.
Kari Q.★★★★★
Great museum, easy flow from ground flooor to top floor. Mixture of art and sculptures with a few beautiful pieces of furniture as well. Cool and comfortable on a hot day. At 9€ per adult it's a bargain. If you're like us and went shopping before visiting, they have lockers. Highly recommend 🇨🇦
Danny Lin★★★★★
One of the finest art museums in southern France and a hidden gem in Montpellier. The museum features an impressive collection that spans several centuries, from classical masterpieces to modern works, making it an enjoyable experience for both art lovers and casual visitors. The galleries are spacious, beautifully curated, and easy to explore at your own pace. I especially appreciated the mix of historic and contemporary art, which creates a diverse and engaging experience. The peaceful atmosphere also makes it easy to spend a few relaxing hours admiring the collection. If you're visiting Montpellier, Musée Fabre is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. Whether you're interested in art, history, or simply looking for a quiet escape from the busy streets, this museum offers a memorable and rewarding experience.

We have spent a wonderful afternoon doing all the guided tours and finishing with the wine tasting. We have been very lucky to meet with the landlord who share his passion and family history guiding us through the chateau. After a lovely walk through the beautiful gardens, Alicia guided us through the whole process of wine making. They were all very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I highly recommend this great experience in Montpellier!
Remy van der Winden★★★★☆
A walk in the garden, a tour through the Chateau and finishing it with a wine tasting. What's not to like! It really wasn't crowded at all, which meant we had the garden basically to ourselves and a private tour of the Chateau! Regrettably, I forgot the name of our tourguide. But he was really wonderful in guiding us through the Chateau, provided lovely insights into the history and was very articulate in English and pleasant to listen to. Incredible that people are currently living there and move to different rooms during tours, into closed off areas. That must feel like living in a museum!
Carolyn Wilson★★★★★
Very significant Chateau with extremely rare items inside! Thanks so much to our expert historical guides for providing so much information! Even if you are not a history fan, the stories of the family owners to present day are intriguing! The Chateau rooms open to view are an hour's visit and the grounds are definitely worth viewing!
Marissa★★★★★
My husband and I had the wedding of our dreams at the Château de Flaugergues! The chateau gardens are absolutely stunning and provided so many unique spaces for each part of our day (the bambouseraie was perfect for the welcome lemonade, the more forested area served as our ceremony space, and the area in front of the orangerie was a great backdrop for our vin d'honneur!) We used the plastic chairs and tables provided by the chateau and these worked perfectly well. Pierre de Colbert and his team are very responsive and helpful, and really contributed a lot to the smooth organization of the event. It rained unexpectedly on our wedding day, but luckily the chateau has a big indoor reception room that we were able to use very easily for dinner and dancing (and it still looked great even without any decoration). For such a beautiful setting, we found the price of the venue to be very reasonable, especially compared to other chateaux in the region. As we had lots of international guests, the fact that the chateau is located near the center of Montpellier was really convenient, and there is a great hotel next door where all of our guests were able to stay (so no bothering with driving or ubers after the wedding). We also got to experience dinner and a great gospel music concert the night before our wedding at the chateau for the fête de la musique, which only added to our experience. Honestly, I can't imagine a better wedding venue in Montpellier!
Karina Rakhmatullaeva★★★★★
It was a great day to have a guided tour (in English and French mixed) around the castle and have a little backstory of how, when and what was happening around it. The property is surrounded by beautiful gardens which worth a longer visit! Our tour has finished with wine tasting of white, rosé and red wines produced on the vineyards located behind the château. Many thanks to the staff and the lady who was our guide!🫶🏻

It is an interesting place to go, especially during early Spring or even in the Summer. The place is quiet and close by the Lez river which has a dam and weirs. The sound of the water flow is a perfect combination if you want to read or just enjoy the sunshine. The embankment makes it more like a canal with a flood protection area surrounded in the river. The urban vibes that try to close by nature is a good attempt, although it is more like an artificial one.

Visited here to see the Raymond Depardon exhibition, do pardon me for saying I loved it! The girlfriend abandoned me for a couple days (let's go?) but I had a brilliant time here, the exhibition was free yet extensive. Brilliant quality of prints and framing. Loovely place, don't miss out on the regular market/festival that is held here every Friday throughout the summer. An incredible atmosphere, the most striking thing for a Scandinavian like me is that everyone walks around with each their (real glass!) small wine glass and just enjoy life. There's a wide variety of food at the stands, crepes, seafood, grill, international, ham, etc. Wine is a given. And of course live music here and there. Insider Tips for Visiting Montpellier

To make the most of your time in Montpellier, it helps to understand a few local customs and practical realities. The following tips are based on the way residents actually live and move through the city, rather than generic travel advice. Keep these suggestions in mind to save time, avoid common frustrations, and experience the city more like a local.

  1. Embrace the tram system early. Montpellier’s colorful tram network is efficient, affordable, and covers nearly every area you will want to visit. Purchase a multi-trip ticket from any tram stop machine, and remember to validate it each time you board. The tram is especially useful for reaching the beaches at Pérols or the modern Antigone district without a car.

  2. Respect the afternoon pause. Many smaller shops and some restaurants close between roughly 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, and again on Sundays and Mondays. Plan your shopping and errands around these hours, and use the quieter afternoon period for a long lunch or a stroll through the historic center.

  3. Look up for the best architecture. Montpellier’s most beautiful details are often above street level. Wrought-iron balconies, carved stone facades, and hidden rooftop terraces reward those who take the time to look upward. The area around Rue de l’Ancien Courrier and Rue du Bras de Fer is particularly rich in these details.

  4. Carry a reusable water bottle. Public drinking fountains are scattered throughout the historic center, and the tap water is perfectly safe to drink. In the summer heat, staying hydrated is essential, and refilling your bottle saves both money and plastic waste.

  5. Learn a few French phrases. While many people in Montpellier speak some English, especially younger residents and those in tourism, a simple “bonjour” when entering a shop and “merci” when leaving goes a long way. Attempting French, even imperfectly, is consistently met with warmth and helpfulness.

  6. Time your visit for spring or early autumn. July and August bring intense heat and larger crowds, while May, June, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere. If you do visit in summer, plan indoor activities for the middle of the day and save outdoor exploration for morning and evening.

  7. Take advantage of free first Sundays. Many of Montpellier’s municipal museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month. If your travel dates align, this is an excellent way to experience the city’s cultural offerings without spending a euro on admission.

The rhythm of Montpellier is best experienced without a rigid schedule.
