Nantes is a city that consistently surprises first-time visitors. Sitting on the banks of the Loire River in western France, it blends centuries of Breton and French history with a bold, creative energy that feels entirely modern. Once the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, it has reinvented itself as a hub for digital innovation, contemporary art, and imaginative urban design. Unlike more formal French cities, Nantes invites you to wander without a rigid itinerary, uncovering mechanical creatures, hidden courtyards, and riverside terraces along the way.
Getting around is refreshingly straightforward. The city’s tram network is efficient, but much of the historic center is best explored on foot or by bicycle. The Loire’s estuary climate keeps temperatures mild, though rain can arrive quickly, so a light waterproof layer is wise in any season. Whether you have a full weekend or a longer stay, Nantes rewards slow travel and curiosity. You will find that many of its most memorable attractions are not behind museum walls but woven directly into the streets, parks, and industrial heritage sites.
Food is another reason to linger here. Breton crêperies sit alongside neo-bistros, and the city’s famous LU biscuit factory has left a sweet legacy that locals still celebrate. Markets brim with Atlantic seafood, Muscadet wine, and the region’s distinctive beurre blanc sauce. Dining is generally less expensive than in Paris, and many restaurants offer lunch formulas that provide excellent value. If you enjoy eating outdoors, the terraces around Place Royale and the Bouffay district fill quickly on sunny afternoons.
For families, Nantes is unusually welcoming. Public spaces include playful installations, and many attractions are designed to engage children without boring adults. The city’s approach to art is interactive rather than passive, which makes it a particularly good destination for travelers who think they do not like traditional museums. Even a simple walk along the Loire can turn into an unexpected encounter with a giant mechanical spider or a floating artwork.
History lovers will find plenty to explore as well. The Château des Ducs de Bretagne anchors the old town, while the Passage Pommeraye offers a glimpse of 19th-century shopping elegance. Nantes also played a significant role in France’s maritime and slave-trading past, and the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery addresses this history with honesty and sensitivity. This willingness to confront complex chapters gives the city a depth that balances its playful surface.
Above all, Nantes feels lived-in rather than preserved. Students, artists, and entrepreneurs share the same cobbled lanes that tourists use, creating an atmosphere that is energetic and authentic. You can start your morning with a coffee in a converted warehouse, spend your afternoon inside a giant mechanical elephant, and end your evening at a wine bar that feels like a neighborhood secret. The following list covers the essential experiences, but leave room for detours.

A brilliant unique experience, mixing steam punk, the natural world, engineering and theatre. We visited the gallerie, the workshop and the carousel, watching the Grand Elephant from the ground and the balcony. Entry to the paid attractions isn't the cheapest but can see the scale of effort and creativity that goes into such large projects. Watching the elephant traverse the area would be a budget friendly option and still amazing.
The gallerie has a lovely flowing style where they "wake the creatures up" one by one in an ongoing loop allowing you to join and leave seamlessly. The presentations are in French although they do an English round on a Monday I believe. There is also a downloadable multilingual guide. Even if you are not fluent, it doesn't really detract from the theatre and spectacle however.

Fun experience. You get to be at the controls of some of these beautiful machines. They showcase how each one functions. The carroussel is lots of run for all ages as well! Highly recommend booking beforehand if you want to go on the elephant ride. Otherwise arriving at any time is fine. Included in the pass Nantes.

The Grand Elephant is the star of the show for me. Wandering around the park spraying kids with water....and that part is free!
We paid to visit the Carousel de Marins and the main gallery. Both very interesting.
Didn't get to the workshop.
You can easily spend a few hours here to see some unique creations.
Well worth it.
David Hunt★★★★★
Interesting, immersive. Well organised. We went from tour to tour, while the elephant ride is impressive it is even more so when seen from ground level. We spent about 3 hours here and were quite satisfied.
Pritesh Rana★★★★★
Great entertainment for kids on a hot sunny day. We didn't ride the Giant Elephant but instead walked along with it whilst it sprayed water at kids, adults and passerby's. Was very entertaining and refreshing on a hot sunny day. Highly recommend.
Best of all there is a little ice cream shop at the halfway point where you can stop for a break before continuing the return spray adventure. 🫶🏼
Would recommend checking timings for walk so you're not waiting around too long.

Literally one minutes from the Gare SNCF, and entry is completely free. Seven hectares of beautiful landscaping. Towering magnolias, sequoias, ponds, greenhouses with tropical plants, and quirky touches like animal-shaped bushes and benches that scale from tiny to giant.
Grabbed a drink at the Café de l'Orangerie and watched locals soaking it up. Peaceful, well‑kept, and charming.
It gets busy, so go early for quiet. Picnics are restricted to one small grassy area at the back.
Well worth a wander, even if you're just passing through Nantes.

I really enjoyed walking around the Jardin des Plantes. It is spacious, beautifully maintained and has an amazing variety of plants, flowers and trees. What I loved most is how peaceful it feels despite being right in the middle of the city. The combination of greenery, beautiful pathways, artistic installations and the historic greenhouses makes the garden really special. There are plenty of quiet corners where you can simply sit, relax and enjoy nature. A perfect place for a peaceful walk, photography, or just taking a break from the city. Definitely one of the places I would recommend visiting in Nantes.
Urs Steinberger★★★★★
Stunningly beautiful, free entrance, perfect opportunity to spend your time if you have 1-2h to switch trains. It's a bit cooler inside the park than outside and the nature is quite beautiful. Especially the many birds were really likeable. Wouldn't know any reason not to go here.

What a delightful place! You can walk around, through and sit for a while. So many beautiful plants and areas to relax and enjoy. The various silly art pieces are terrific! This place could be twice the size given all the people enjoying it.

Île de Versailles is a very tranquil and charming spot right in the heart of Nantes. Despite the hotter weather, it felt noticeably cooler thanks to the lush greenery and surrounding water. I saw people strolling around, relaxing, and simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It’s a lovely escape from the urban rush and offers a very pleasant experience for any traveler. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a calm and scenic break.
Stefanos Stoikos★★★★★
Tranquil space with peaceful ponds and small waterfalls that is ideal for a quick walk or break with the family. It's also a good spot to take some beautiful pictures. There is a caf on the island. There are shady spots where you can lie down and read or just kill some time before you continue exploring Nantes.

One more cool escape in the city center. It needs a serious renovation if they want to call it a Japanese garden cause there's not much of a Japanese culture. For activities you can rent a canoe or an electric boat, there's a kid's playground and coffee and drinks shop.
Alistair Stott★★★★★
Lovely Japanese themed garden, quite easy walk from the city centre. You can hire a motorised or electric boat from here to navigate the river Erdre.

Initially as I was walking up to Chateau des ducs de Bretagne, it stroke my attention. I was very impressed with the magnitude of the castle. I thought it was extremely beautiful. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to explore the full depth of the castle or the museum on the inside, due to shortage in time. However, I definitely hope to come back to view the rest of the Chateau at some point in the future. It’s definitely worth the visit.
Charlotte Barrett★★★★★
This is a beautiful castle with lots to see in the museum (not everything has translations though so note that if you don't speak French you may miss out a bit). There are lovely interactive exhibits that the kids loved, even though they couldn't understand French. The staff were lovely and friendly, the chateau itself is beautiful and you could easily spend a whole day there. The grounds surrounding it are very pretty too. We really enjoyed it, and were pleasantly surprised that the kids were free, even our 12 year old. Well worth a visit.
Jed Morgan★★★★★
We visited the chateau as part of a short one day visit to Nantes. We didn’t book a tour but really enjoyed freely accessing the walk on the ramparts with great photo opportunities. The history of the chateau is very interesting too
David Hunt★★★★★
Loved that you can walk the walls and surrounding gardens. The museum inside the main chateau tells a good story of Nantes. The sections on colonialism, slavery and world war are well put together and thought provoking.

Beautiful historical site and a must-visit in Nantes. The château is impressive, full of history, and the atmosphere is amazing.
Even though it was raining when I went, it was still absolutely worth it. Walking around the castle walls and seeing the architecture in that weather made it even more memorable.
Highly recommended!

Such a pity that all this eglise is closed off. It's had a lot of fire damage done to it and I guess for safety reasons it's all barricaded off. There are really pretty gardens beside it though that we wandered through and it was nice to see the eglise from different angles.

Le Grand Éléphant is one of those attractions that sounds a little unusual when someone describes it—but somehow turns out to be even better in real life.
Watching a 12-meter-tall mechanical elephant, built from wood and steel, slowly walk through Nantes while moving its trunk, ears, eyes, and even spraying water at unsuspecting spectators is both impressive engineering and great fun. It’s impossible not to smile.
Our whole family enjoyed it. The children were fascinated by the mechanics, while the adults couldn’t help wondering how someone first pitched the idea of building a giant walking elephant—and, more importantly, convinced everyone else it was a good idea.
As a bit of a science fiction fan, I particularly appreciated the clear steampunk inspiration. The exposed gears, pistons, and ingenious mechanical details make it feel as though something from a Jules Verne novel has come to life. Given that Nantes was Jules Verne’s birthplace, that connection makes the attraction even more fitting.
If you have the opportunity, it’s well worth buying a ticket to ride on the elephant. Seeing the city from its back while it slowly makes its way through the former shipyards is a memorable experience.
Le Grand Éléphant is quirky, imaginative, and uniquely French in the best possible way. It perfectly captures Nantes’ ability to combine engineering, creativity, history, and a healthy sense of humor. Definitely one of the city’s must-see attractions.
Sonja Olaussen★★★★☆
Awesome beast, reaching terrifying speed 1 or 2 km/h. It's more fun to see it from the ground, the 30-min-long tour goes really slowly. But the elephant is very high, views from it are amazing

I took my 2 grandsons here, 16 and 17. For over an hour they put their mobile devices aside and marveled at what could be done with a different technology. Fascinating designs and interactive exhibits make this place a must see.

Great place for the kids. Especially when exploring the city this breaks up the trio and allow them to be free, especially cool down on the hot day. The water empties and refills automatically which is great. There are some jets that also come on where the kids can walk through. Loads of people here under the shade of the trees and an ice cream truck also serving ice creams.

Really cool place during the day where the large area of water acts as a mirror in which the castle is reflected. At night, the fountain displays all kinds of beautiful combinations of colors and patterns. A must see when in Nantes!

Everyone gets to pilot their own machine with unique little mechanisms, and they're all well-designed with a consistent aesthetic. There is much room for further detailing in parts of the carousel, but on the other hand, for such an attraction, wait times were fairly short, even on a Saturday.

€24 for 2x adults with young child who is too small to ride the middle level. The top level was broken down completely and bottom level only half capacity operating, with a huge queue we did not have time to join. Great place for hangout with friends. It took me 20 minutes to walk from the Tram station
The area has many bars, pubs inside. Remember to bring a warm coat, it’s very windy here. I had to wait til night, at 10.30pm for the neon light 💡 , it’s quite late in summer.
For low angle photos, you’ll have many masterpieces for your social media though 😝

Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit
The suggestions below will help you navigate Nantes with more confidence, avoid common frustrations, and uncover experiences that many visitors overlook. A little planning goes a long way in this city, especially when it comes to opening hours, weather, and getting between attractions efficiently.
-
Buy a Pass Nantes if you plan to visit multiple paid attractions. The city pass includes entry to the Château, the Machines de l’Île, and public transport. It often pays for itself after two or three major sights, and skipping ticket lines is a genuine time-saver in summer.
-
Book the Machines de l’Île in advance. The mechanical elephant rides sell out quickly, especially on weekends and school holidays. Reserve your time slot online before you arrive, then explore the nearby Hangar à Bananes while you wait.
-
Use the Navibus river shuttle. Many visitors never realize that Nantes has public transport boats along the Loire and Erdre. The Navibus is included with a standard tram ticket and offers a scenic, traffic-free way to reach Trentemoult or the university area.
-
Eat lunch rather than dinner as your main meal. Most restaurants offer a two- or three-course lunch formula at a fraction of the evening price. You will eat well for less and still have energy for an afternoon of walking.
-
Explore beyond the historic center on Sundays. While many shops close, the parks, riverside paths, and neighborhoods like Trentemoult remain lively. Sunday is ideal for a bike ride along the Loire or a lazy brunch in a converted warehouse.
-
Learn a few French phrases before you go. English is spoken in tourist areas, but a polite “bonjour” and “merci” go a long way in smaller shops and cafés. Locals warm noticeably when you make an effort.

Check the Voyage à Nantes summer program. Each summer, the city installs temporary artworks along a green-painted trail through the streets. Following the line is free and leads you to corners of Nantes you might otherwise miss.
Nantes has a rhythm that reveals itself most clearly when you stop rushing. Sit on a café terrace in Place du Bouffay, watch the trams glide past the castle, or take an evening walk along the Erdre as the rowers return to shore. These quiet moments often become the ones you remember longest. The city’s charm lies not only in its headline attractions but in the easy, creative atmosphere that connects them.
Whether you come for the mechanical animals, the medieval history, or simply the pleasure of a French city that does not take itself too seriously, Nantes delivers. It is a destination that manages to feel both deeply rooted and refreshingly forward-looking. Once you have visited, you will likely understand why so many travelers describe it as one of France’s most underrated cities.
