15 Best Bars in Nantes

Nantes may sit slightly off the beaten path compared to Paris or Lyon, but its drinking scene is a genuine reflection of the city’s creative, youthful, and slightly rebellious spirit. From the historic Bouffay district with its medieval half-timbered houses to the industrial-chic hangars on the Île de Nantes, the city offers a diverse range of watering holes that cater to every kind of night owl. Whether you are looking for a quiet glass of natural wine, a meticulously crafted cocktail, or a rowdy pint of local beer, the former capital of Brittany has you covered.

The local bar culture here is heavily influenced by the city’s strong student population and its proximity to the Loire Valley vineyards. You will find that many establishments blur the lines between café, bar, and cultural venue, often hosting live DJ sets, art exhibitions, or vinyl listening sessions. This isn’t a city where you simply drink; it’s a city where you experience the local "art de vivre" in a glass, often accompanied by a plate of local cheese or a fresh oyster.

Navigating the nightlife in Nantes means understanding its distinct neighborhoods. The Bouffay area is the historical heart and the busiest hub, known for its dense concentration of pubs and late-night energy. Just a short walk away, the Graslin district offers a more sophisticated, upscale atmosphere, while the Île de Nantes attracts a hipster crowd looking for innovative concepts and sprawling terraces with a view of the Loire.

Because the city is relatively compact, you can easily hop between several distinct atmospheres in a single evening. The tram system runs late on weekends, making it safe and convenient to explore without relying on a car. The city has also seen a surge in craft beer and organic wine, meaning even the pickiest connoisseur will find something to appreciate.

To help you cut through the noise and avoid tourist traps, I have curated a list based on quality of drinks, atmosphere, and authenticity. This selection prioritizes places that locals actually frequent, ensuring you get a true taste of the Nantes nightlife rather than a generic experience.

Below is a curated guide to the best drinking establishments the city has to offer, spanning everything from cozy wine cellars to high-energy cocktail labs.

I found this to be the most expensive pub in Nantes (24euros for a large rum) during my visit for spirits. Staff were ok but not worth a 2nd visit in my opinion. Much better and value Irish pubs available, might have been an off day for them but I doubt I'll be returning when I'm back in town
anthony perreault★★★★★
It's a great place to grab a Guinness. you can't go wrong with a Guinness. The Guinness was actually pretty good ( sometimes they taste a bit bad). Got my best G splitting to date.
Kirill Vankov★★★★☆
Really large choice of tap beers and other drinks. The location is perfect for group gatherings, inside there is enough space as well as several tables outside for the smokes. The hunger can be fed by several cold dishes with cheese, ham, sausages, etc. The toilet is clean. Everything looks good, but it still missing some charm.
Carmen Hy★★★★★
Great little Irish pub in Nantes, lots of screens available to watch the rugby. Brilliant choice of drinks. Charcuterie boards were delicious too. No other food choice unfortunately but it didn't matter

Perfect pub for a pint of beer or a bottle of wine with saucisson. Lovely lively neighborhood and very friendly service, too.

A great place to rest from the heat wave. And the range of beer, and the staff are wonderful. And of course they serve bears...lol

Is the quintessential Irish pub in the center square of Nantes, with the Chateaux just on the other side of the Cathedral. Nice views, and easy access on the corner with outdoor seating. It's relatively quiet, because of the circle by around the larger church in the square. Check out the 5 Euro pints starting at 5 pm- Happy Hour, and Sunday brunch.
Hermine★★★★☆
Amazing pub. The interior is very spacious, there's a snooker table and darts. Big TV screens too even though I'm not a fan of them. The barmen are incredibly nice and the prices are really good too ! I failed to split the G on my Guinness twice and the barman gave me a third chance, and guess what I made it so I'm grateful 😂 Plus the pub closes at 2am even on a Tuesday. I'll definitely come back 🙂

Fantastic bar, a fab atmosphere, loads of choices of beers and lagers, lots of TV screens to watch different games and very friendly service

The food came out quickly and the staff were welcoming. The restaurant itself has a cozy atmosphere, perfect for hanging out with friends or even a casual date night. Prices were reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. Definitely one of those places I’d happily come back to again and recommend to others ! 👍🏼👍🏼

Excellent drinks and food (especially the fries)
Marc Berry★★★★★
Only had one beer here so can't judge it on anything else, the service was pleasant enough and its it's a nice place to hang out. I had a pint of xmas Chouffe, so at 10% alcohol - set me up nicely for the day. I watched some people eating burgers, and they looked pretty good, so I'd go back again sometime for sure.
Martin Broderick★★★★★
Really nice staff here. bar staff told us where to visit and told us which tram to get to the nantes game.nice vibe in the bar showing all the sports lots of tables outside.cant recommend it highly enough great Guinness and cider too but the owner and staff were the nuts
Robert Keenan★★★★★
Wow what a place I loved it, Isaak, Luna and the dude that I asked for Kombucha unbelievable service from start to finish. The Irish lot were out in full storm and this place loved it and accommodated in the best way they could. Drinks were flowing, sports was showing and music was pumping. Couldn't have asked for better pub to spend our last night in Nantes. All the best Robert (apologies for vomitting)

A beautiful establishment. My girlfriend (soon to be wife) brought me here all the way from California to show me her favorite restaurant in Marseille - actually in all her travels! We are now both in love and the owner and the staff are beyond charming and so delightful. Then we get to the food. The terrine and fromage and charcuterue are beyond amazing. The entire menu is exquisite and we will be dining here for dinner for the remainder of our week here. We cannot wait for our return to Marseille and le circle rouge and hope to move here soon so it can be our home base restaurant and bar,! We will see you tomorrow night! A must for everyone! A+++++
Elise Lafeber★☆☆☆☆
My phone got stolen at this bar by one of their regulars! Due to the chaos and stress I forgot to pay my bill… All they cared about was the money I owed them and even though the owner KNOWS the person who stole my phone, they refused to be of any help!!! Even when the police called them for information they wouldn’t help! I would recommend everyone to stay away from this place, and be careful if you meet a Mike at this place, he may seem very nice, but he’ll steal your phone and try to destroy it when you send the police after them! Normally I would definitely go back to pay my bill, but as my phone was stolen by regulars and the staff protected them, I didn’t feel safe enough to go back there!
Gerda-Liis Nurmjõe★★★★★
Great prices! Awesome music! And the drinks and oh the staff!! All of them lovely! We went there two nights in a row and had the pleasure to be recognised! Enjoyed our time there and special thanks to Adrien who helped us with our French pronounciation! ❤️

This place was awesome! The food was better than I anticipated by just looking at the menu. We got the boar's meat and it was delicious. Also various cheeses (the main platter I think) and meats, olives, pickles. They were all really good. We also got a bunch of mocktails to sample and they were all really good. I loved the White Walker! They also have a DnD club that meets for games, drinking, drawing, etc. They were meeting tonight and if the woman with the Batman jacket ever reads this, I loved your coat! I highly recommend and we would go back for sure.

Outdoors seating, main room with group tables and stools, plus a backroom lounge type setup sees the place offering options for any circumstances. Thoroughly +1ed !

Very nice atmosphere and a diverse selection of beer. The music was pleasant and not too loud as you have in certain bars. I was most impressed with the precautions taken to limit COVID-19 transmission: compulsory use of masks, cleaning gel dispensers every few meters, etc.

Just stopped for a beer and it was delicious! Good ambiance.
ding Ding★☆☆☆☆
I seriously do NOT recommend this place. The food was awful and the service was completely disorganized. I sat there for 20 minutes and didn’t even get a glass of water. I’ve traveled to many countries and always had a great experience with French cuisine — but this place is a total disgrace. They were clearly unfriendly to English-speaking guests. The starter tasted worse than bathwater — one bite and I almost saw the light. The main course? The rice was hard as rocks. It honestly felt like I was paying to be punished. It’s like they’re selling garbage and forcing people to eat it. I’m genuinely shocked that a place this bad is even allowed to stay open.
Meaghan Renner★★☆☆☆
Not sure why this place was so well rated. We found the staff to be quite rude and were served raw chicken which had to be returned and was still 50% inedible when the new one arrived. The sweet potato fries on another dish were also undercooked and slimy.

Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Nantes

While the city is welcoming and easy to navigate, a little local knowledge goes a long way in ensuring you have the best possible night out. The drinking culture here has specific rhythms and rules that differ slightly from other major French cities. Understanding these nuances will help you blend in and make the most of your evening.

1. Embrace the "Apéro" Culture
The French tradition of the "apéro" (pre-dinner drink) is sacred in Nantes. Most bars open around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM, and the prime time for a drink is between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This is when you will find the best atmosphere, as locals unwind after work. Many bars offer "happy hour" pricing during this window, making it the most affordable and sociable time to drink.

2. Check for Seasonal Pop-Ups and Guinguettes
Nantes is famous for its summer "guinguettes"—temporary open-air bars that pop up along the Loire River and in parks from May to September. These spots offer a festival-like atmosphere with outdoor seating, live music, and food trucks. If you are visiting during the warmer months, prioritize these over indoor venues, as they are a quintessential part of the local summer experience.

3. Don’t Be Afraid of Natural Wine
The Loire Valley is one of the world’s premier regions for natural and organic wines. Many bars in Nantes specialize in "vin nature," which can taste funkier and more alive than conventional wines. If you are a wine lover, step out of your comfort zone and ask the bartender for a recommendation. They are usually passionate and happy to guide you through the local terroir.

4. Late Nights Start Late
Unlike some northern European cities where the party starts early, Nantes is a late-night town. While bars are busy for the apéro, they often empty out around 9:00 PM as people head to dinner. The real party crowd usually returns around 11:00 PM or midnight. If you want a livelier, dancing atmosphere, don’t head out too early; instead, take a nap after dinner and hit the town later.

5. Explore Beyond the Bouffay
While the Bouffay district is the most famous and historically beautiful, it can be crowded and tourist-heavy. To drink like a true local, venture toward the Quartier de la Création on the Île de Nantes or the streets around Place Viarme. These areas offer more experimental concepts, better craft beer selections, and a more relaxed, authentic vibe away from the weekend bachelor parties.

Nantes is a city that rewards curiosity. Whether you end up sipping a Muscadet on a sun-drenched terrace or dancing until dawn in a converted warehouse, the city’s bars offer a warmth and creativity that is hard to find elsewhere. The key is to let go of a strict itinerary and allow the vibrant energy of the streets to guide you from one venue to the next.

With its unique blend of Breton heritage, maritime history, and artistic innovation, a night out in Nantes is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the drinks. So raise a glass, say "santé," and enjoy discovering one of France’s most underrated nightlife capitals.
