Tours may be known as the gateway to the Loire Valley’s grand châteaux, but its urban heart holds a quieter, more caffeinated secret. Beyond the medieval half-timbered houses and the bustling Place Plumereau, a new wave of design-conscious coffee shops and patisseries has taken root.
This isn’t just about grabbing a quick espresso; it is about the atmosphere. In a city where history seeps from every limestone wall, the best aesthetic cafes in Tours blend contemporary minimalism with the region’s innate French elegance.
Whether you are a digital nomad hunting for the perfect workspace, a foodie chasing the flakiest croissant, or a traveler seeking that perfect Instagram backdrop, Tours offers a diverse range of visual and culinary experiences.
From lush indoor jungles to sleek Scandinavian interiors, the coffee scene here has evolved to rival much larger French cities. The baristas take their craft seriously, often sourcing beans from local roasters who prioritize traceability and flavor.
Navigating the cobblestone lanes to find the most beautiful spots can be a delightful challenge. To help you curate your perfect café crawl through this historic university town, we have compiled a list of the most visually stunning and taste-bud-tingling locations.
These venues represent the pinnacle of design, comfort, and gastronomy in the city center and beyond. Here is where you should be sipping your oat milk flat white in the heart of Touraine.

After a 2 week road trip from Portsmouth, UK to Provence and back again, this was one of our favourite coffees. An actual flat white, from a barista machine, made with proper coffee beans. Impressive latte art skills too. I’d also give 5 stars for the sense of humour - felt like a home from home.
Diana A★★★★☆
The oat cappuccino was very good and reminded me of Australia. The only thing missing was a sprinkle of chocolate powder but after months of mediocre coffee I was transported and very very happy!
Unfortunately hot chocolate was less good. It is still miles better than chocomel or ovaltine in Swiss (who calls that travesty a hot chocolate???) so it is only a small gripe. It was a bit weak on chocolate flavour but still creamy. Maybe the recipe needs to be revised?
On a personal note I really liked how warm and kind the server was. The atmosphere in the cafe is very conducive to being relaxed. Will return when I’m next in Tours.

Great coffee place in the heart of Tours! Get your Flat White with Latte Art at this Specialty Coffee Place.
Unfortunately they didn’t have a real breakfast, but the cake and other baked goods were a nice alternative.

Hello,
I left my wallet in your shop on Saturday. I am really worried about it. I am in Paris on a flight back to the US. I came back but your shop was closed. Please let me know if you have it and I can arrange for someone to pick it out. I have called many times and no answer and I have left messages.

We looked for a breakfast spot because our hotel breakfast was not good. We had to wait until they opened at 10am, but it was very worth it. All of the food was amazing. The pancakes were light crisp and decedent. The eggs were perfect eggs and the bacon was candied a little bit and superb. Highly recommend! Also it was very nice getting to see the people who work there make each other laugh.

Came here a few times for coffees during my short stay in Tours. Had a few variations of their coffee: batch brew, long black, and flat white. They were all great and my personal preference was flat white in a small cup (which had less amount of milk than their standard version). The latte art of milk based drinks is always a welcome bonus, not just a pleasure to look at, it demonstrates the frothing technique and more importantly their passion in making coffees.
They also have beautifully presented cakes and cookies (although I didn’t try any).
Karsten Lang Pedersen★★★★★
Everything on the menu is home made and very delicious. The coffee pulled to perfection from a light roast bean. An airconditioned section with games and activities is available in the back of the cafe.

Lovely café steps from Gare de Tours. We came once for coffees and snacks, loved the vibe and friendly staff and returned another day for delicious breakfast. Will definitely return.

Lovely place, The Eggs, Bacon, & Pancakes were delicious, it came with a slight drizzle of real tasting maple syrup! My husband loved the the Ham, Zucchini, over toast. Both were very filling and delicious! They also have an English menu and speak English well! Mochaccino was delicious and beautiful ❤️

Lovely dinosaur-themed cafe, with a lot of activities and art. There were gluten free cookies, and the drinks are tasty, and you can swap cow milk for a plant-based alternative free of charge !

This space is fully occupated by young people with laptops - they decided that here is their ‘office’?! One americano and work all day long? And customers who come for coffee and food should have their drinks take-away. Something is wrong guys, no? In the small places respecting their customers you’ll find ‘no laptops please’. Wish you also respect those who come for coffee, not for work in your spot

that was for real, the worst coffee i’ve ever had in my entire life!
too hot, messed up the order and just disgusting in taste.

This lovely coffee shop hits the mark for those looking for a perfectly prepared espresso or fancy pour over that you’d find in big metropolitan cities. I visited on successive days during a recent trip. The barista is welcoming to visitors and regulars alike and expertly prepares espresso drinks on a La Marzocco machine. The oat milk (lait d’avoine) doesn’t taste like the barista blend that you find in the U.S. but the espresso still sings through. This would be my daily stop if I lived in Tours!

Some of the best coffee I’ve ever had, the blend is just the right balance of fruity and smooth. The cheese cake I had with it was also very tasty , not too sweet and creamy. The owner was nice enough to put up with my terrible panicked French and the overall atmosphere of being on the quieter end of the old city make it a wonderful little spot to have a break and enjoy the word go by.

The coffee was lovely, the barista spoke good English, and the prices were very fair. €3.50 for a latte, and they didn't charge for alternative milks. Some seating available outside.

We stopped here for lunch and were lucky to get a place. I had Eggs Benedict which was served with a nice salad - the eggs were perfectly cooked with a nice runny yolk. I had tap water to drink. I had a vanilla mousse with caramel and pecan followed by a good long coffee. 46€ for two is good value. I would eat here again.

Best value breakfast we've had in weeks traveling across France! $14.50 for a hot or cold drink, croque monsieur and a pastry. Everything is so good.
We're really picky... intentionally visit high rated places....this place is legit.
Very little English but wasn't a problem.

I have always supported this coffee shop from the beginning. I also love their mission and purpose. But recently, the service has been less than stellar. A handful of times now, no exaggerating you walk in and no one greets or serves you for minutes. Yesterday I walked in w 5 people around the counter working on one salad. No one looked up to say hello. I said hello. I stood at the register for several minutes. Just there in plain sight and no one came. I was about to walk out. I’m rethinking about going elsewhere. I feel like the managers are always angry. The rest of the staff are joyful and always helping. The managers look miserable
. I hope management sees this and does something about it. Thanks.

The espresso was okay and not great. The chocolate “lava” cake (cœur coulant) looked like a 5 but tasted like a 3 star dessert. The decor inside and mid of seating styles makes this place attractive to gather. The exterior had nice seating as well. In nice weather it makes for a great people-watching spot!

Eclair au chocolate was dry and creme pâtisserie was dry. Flat white over roasted and bitter. Barquette aux fruits rouge not bad tasted fresh. Mum very happy with cholcoate chaud
Kimka Duk★★★★☆
The staff were exceptionally welcoming and attentive. The quality and flavor of the dishes I chose — the quiche Lorraine and the chausson aux pommes — were absolutely delightful and perfectly suited to my taste.
Unfortunately, the éclair was somewhat underwhelming and lacked the refinement I was expecting from a French pastry.
Overall, this became my favorite place in town during my short stay 🙂

We stopped here while road-tripping through France and were so glad we found it - especially on a quiet Sunday when most places were closed. The outdoor seating was beautiful in the sun (and totally packed), but the indoor space is super cute too. We weren’t expecting much from a park café, but the coffee was genuinely lush, way better than you’d think. The brunch menu looked amazing as well… kind of regretting not ordering anything. Definitely worth a stop if you’re nearby!

Tips for Enjoying Aesthetic Cafes in Tours
To truly make the most of the café culture in Tours, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The rhythm of the city can shift dramatically between the quiet morning hours and the bustling afternoon rush, so planning your visits strategically will enhance your experience significantly. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate the scene like a local.
Timing is Everything
French café culture has a distinct pulse. If you want to secure the best corner table or photograph the interiors without a crowd, arrive right at opening time, usually between 8:30 AM and 9:30 AM. Lunch hours (12:00 PM to 2:00 PM) are often chaotic, while late afternoons are perfect for a slower, more relaxed pastry break.
Embrace the Terrace Culture
Even if the interior design is stunning, the French way is to sit outside when the weather permits. Many cafes in Tours offer beautiful terraces spilling onto medieval squares. However, note that many aesthetic cafes have "table service" on terraces, meaning you should wait to be seated rather than grabbing a table yourself.
Check for Laptop Policies
Not all beautiful cafes are laptop-friendly. While many aesthetic spots in the city welcome digital nomads during the week, some artisan coffee shops ban screens on weekends to encourage conversation. If you plan to work, look for signs indicating "No Laptop" zones or ask the barista before unpacking your gear.
Don’t Skip the Pastry Counter
Aesthetic cafes in France are often judged by their viennoiseries as much as their latte art. Many of the top spots in Tours partner with local artisan bakers. Always ask which pastry is baked in-house or delivered fresh that morning; the visual appeal of a perfectly laminated croissant is half the experience.
Explore the Side Streets
While Place Plumereau is historically magnificent, the cafes directly on the main tourist square often prioritize volume over quality. The true aesthetic gems are usually tucked away on quieter streets like Rue Colbert or Rue de la Scellerie, where local owners have invested in unique interior concepts without the tourist markup.
The café scene in Tours is a testament to the city’s ability to honor its Renaissance past while embracing modern design trends. Each location offers more than just caffeine; it provides a sensory escape where the aroma of roasted beans meets carefully curated playlists and hand-picked furniture. As you wander between these spots, you will notice that the aesthetic is not superficial—it is an extension of the passion the owners pour into every cup.
So, whether you are drying off after a morning of château hopping or simply watching the trams glide by, these cafes offer the perfect pause. Indulge in the local ritual of taking your time, savoring the textures, and letting the beauty of Tours sink in, one sip at a time.
