12 Best Rooftop Cafes in Nantes

Nantes may not have the vertical skyline of Paris or Lyon, but what it lacks in towering heights it makes up for with architectural charm. The city’s rooftops offer a unique blend of historic slate, modern glass, and industrial heritage, creating vantage points that feel distinctly Breton. From repurposed warehouses on the Île de Nantes to elegant Haussmann-style buildings near the Château des Ducs, elevated dining here is as much about the atmosphere as the altitude.

A rooftop café in Nantes is rarely just a place to grab a coffee. These spaces function as social hubs where locals gather for an apéro as the Loire reflects the fading sunlight. The best terraces capture the city’s creative energy, often pairing seasonal menus with views of the cathedral, the Tour Bretagne, or the ever-evolving Machines de l’Île. For visitors, they provide a quiet moment to observe the city’s rhythm from above.

The climate in western France makes rooftop culture a seasonal pleasure, with most terraces opening fully between April and October. However, a handful of venues now offer covered or heated spaces that extend the season into the cooler months. Understanding this schedule is key to planning a visit, as some of the most sought-after spots close their upper decks entirely during winter.

Quality varies significantly among elevated venues in Nantes. Some focus on specialty coffee and patisserie, while others lean into natural wines and small plates. The best establishments treat the view as an enhancement rather than the sole attraction, ensuring that the food and service standards match the scenery. This guide prioritizes places that excel in both categories.

Navigating the city’s narrow medieval streets can make finding these hidden terraces a challenge. Many are tucked away inside hotels, cultural centers, or shopping arcades, requiring a bit of local knowledge to access. Fortunately, Nantes is compact and walkable, meaning a rooftop tour can easily be combined with visits to Passage Pommeraye or the Jardin des Plantes.

Below is a curated selection of the finest rooftop cafés Nantes has to offer. Each entry has been evaluated for drink quality, food options, view quality, and overall atmosphere, ensuring you find the perfect elevated spot for your needs.

Absolutely amazing. You can't miss this place while visiting Nantes. You will have a great view at the Mechanical Elephant (if you are there during the hours he is walking around) and to the river. Plus, a large selection of draft beers and the food was really good. Absolutely recommended

A true gem! Absolutely perfect, it's exactly what you'd expect from an establishment like this: a friendly atmosphere, a warm welcome, and cuisine that borders on perfection. The ingredients are fresh, seasonal, perfectly cooked, and subtly seasoned. Every dish is a true delight. A huge thank you to Johanna, the sommelier, whose passion is contagious. You can trust her completely; her recommendations are remarkably accurate. Special mention also goes to Bertrand in the kitchen, who does an exceptional job. We had a wonderful evening in an atmosphere that was both warm and professional. The value for money is simply outstanding. Frankly, if Google allowed it, I'd give it more than 5 stars. An address I recommend 100%, and one I'll gladly return to!
didier boismoreau★★★★★
Ahhh! It's so good to find a place like this! The food is delicious and unpretentious. Quality ingredients and the people who produce them are truly celebrated. As for the wines: some real gems, with Johanna's expert advice. In short: a clean sweep! All this at a very reasonable price. What more could you ask for? We're swimming in happiness 🎉

The place to be ! Very nice spot for paddle !
Van_trotters★☆☆☆☆
Not a great place to watch a match; the bar service requires a 45-minute to 1-hour wait, the organization is terrible, the servers are fed up and clearly don't want to work. It's a shame because the place itself is nice and quite large. As for the atmosphere, there was no music at all during the entire evening.

Fantastic find! We booked a padel session at this new complex this weekend and everything was perfect: a warm welcome and a beautiful setting. We're now looking forward to trying out the restaurant. See you soon!

Le Café de l'Orangerie is one of those super relaxing little spots hidden inside the Jardin des Plantes. You can grab a coffee or lunch surrounded by plants and huge trees, and the terrace feels like a quiet escape right in the middle of Nantes. Perfect after a walk through the garden.
Clement★★★★★
I visited at noon on a Saturday and I would recommend making a reservation if you want to sit on the terrace ; however, whether you sit inside or outside, the food is delicious and the staff is nice. Especially after a walk through the garden, this is a great stop! I had the salmon filet and it was to die for.
Anna Kornilova★★★★★
I enjoyed the food, fast friendly service and the price of my lunch visit. I loved the main dish of Pork/soy with carrot mousseline. Lemon curd with not so sweet cheesecake worked great and the salmon paired with Grannysmith apple for an appetizer was tasty, interesting, although small:) Highly recommend! Staff speak English.
Annabelle Brodie★★★★★
My family had a very enjoyable 3 course meal here. The staff were very welcoming and hard working; the food excellent! We ordered everything on the menu just to taste the dishes, and we ate every bit. The atmosphere and location are also lovely. Our kids played in the playground until our reservation and had a wonderful time. It is worth making a booking. It was popular. Thank you, Cafe de l'Orangerie.
Katerina Daskalaki★★★★★
If you are looking for a place to have your coffee in a sunny day, it is the perfect spot. The park is beautiful and the view fantastic. There is a variety of tea and the desserts are good.

We missed the Bronze Medal match between Morocco and Eqypt and decided to find a place to eat. O Deck was our choice and it was a treat. Memorable food presentation. Tasty dishes. Relaxing atmosphere. The steak had an amazing flavor. It could have been more tender (I’m from Texas!! and we love our steaks). It’s a wonderful experience and we were delighted to dine at this restaurant.

O Suck this should be called both my wife and I were on holidays from London got badly food poisoned from the terrine starter. No waiter to ask how the food was or any follow up for that matter. Very unfriendly, shockingly bad service and food. My wife has reached out as per website yet still no response. I am attaching photos of the dodgey terrine as it tasted a bit off at the time.

We only got appetizers like t charcuterie board, it was excellent, would've been five stars with the fried mozzarella and rice balls and amazing meats. Unfortunately the time to table was over 15 mins, and they gave 3 pieces of bread. When asked for more it took another 5-10 mins and we got 4 slices.

Atmospheric and trendy restaurant located only 20 minutes from central Nantes. Totally worth the drive. Just look at those crème brûlées!
Joel Ferreira★★☆☆☆
An absolute disappointment.. staff is wonderful and helpful however food quality is near to disgusting. We ordered shrimps and a beef stake and after two slices we returned our plates.. uneateable. Upon this fact, there was no intention from management to provide us with an alternative or will to further understand our discontent. Never again and strongly recommend to stay away.. I cannot understand all the starred reviews..
Ali Mcanoy★☆☆☆☆
We visited this place having read good reviews. We arrived at 6 30 and ordered drinks. When we asked for the menu we were given it, then 5 mins later we were told there was no food until 7.30, which was ok by us, we could wait ...and menus taken off us. At 7.40 we had to ask again for menus as no one had come near us. We ordered food. It was awful. I ordered steak rare and rare it was! I love rare meat but this was cold and the fat was completely uncooked. Any chef should know this isn't right. I sent it back and it came back a little better. But the fat was inedible. My husband ordered a beef and prawn salad. The beef was raw. Not just carpaccio but thick pieces of raw beef. The prawns were lukewarm (not great for seafood) he refused to eat it. We were made to feel that we were being awkward! And the atmosphere created was very unsettling. We got the bill and had to insist we were not paying for a salad that would have made my husband ill. To be fair the waiter did take it off the bill. We paid €47 euros for beer and (really good) fries 😒
Crazy Scientist★★★★★
A very nice and quiet restaurant with a beautiful view of the Erdre. The team is friendly and they even accepted to serve lunch at around 14:40 which was so nice of them. The menu was simple but delicious. I loved the dessert and the fish of the day. I will definitely return.

Stopped off here recently to pick up a coffee and it was really nice. I loved the fitout of the café and especially the royal blue colour of the furniture- it was very pretty and welcoming. The guy who served me was really nice and talked to me about coffee and where they source there own coffee. Coffee was well made and beautiful blend. My dog and his friend also got a lovely drink too. Good price.

I have been coming to this place for some time to do things on my laptop because I liked the atmosphere. So I came this Saturday, worked on my laptop and drank coffee, decided to order another coffee when the waiter came to me and said that I shouldn't be on my laptop on a Saturday (after I had already been there for at least an hour). If I had known this earlier, I would not have ordered another coffee. All in all, a very unpleasant experience

My 2nd favorite café in all of Nantes ! Really cool café in a cool location. Plus the owners are personable and passionate. Perfect for coffee geeks or just people who like good beans !

Just discovered Horizon today and i am amazed ! I thought i loved my coffee before walking in this place, but I clearly re-discovered it today ! The team very kindly offered to help me choose a coffee that would fit my taste, and completely blown my mind with a watermelon tasting coffe, and then another one that tasted like marshmallows meets a pine tree ! Tips for Enjoying Nantes Rooftop Cafés

Making the most of Nantes’ rooftop scene requires a bit of strategy, especially during peak tourist season or when the weather turns unpredictable. These practical tips will help you secure the best tables, avoid disappointment, and experience the city’s elevated terraces like a local rather than a tourist.

First, always check the opening hours and seasonal availability before making a special trip. Many terraces close without notice during heavy rain or high winds, and some operate on reduced schedules outside the summer months. A quick phone call or social media check can save you a wasted journey. Second, book ahead for sunset slots, particularly on Thursday and Friday evenings when after-work crowds fill the best venues. Third, embrace the French timing—arrive around 11 a.m. for a quiet coffee or after 2 p.m. to avoid the lunch rush. Fourth, dress in layers, as rooftop temperatures can drop quickly even on warm days, especially near the Loire where breezes are constant. Fifth, don’t hesitate to ask staff about off-menu specials or local wine pairings, as many cafés take pride in showcasing small producers from the Muscadet region. Finally, combine your visit with nearby cultural attractions, such as the Nantes Cathedral or the Île de Versailles, to create a full afternoon itinerary.

The rooftop café culture in Nantes continues to evolve, with new venues opening each year and established spots refining their offerings. What remains constant is the city’s commitment to quality, creativity, and that distinctly laid-back western French approach to hospitality. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning local, there is always a new angle from which to appreciate this dynamic city.

Take your time exploring these elevated escapes. Each one offers a different perspective on Nantes—from the medieval rooftops of the Bouffay district to the contemporary lines of the Euronantes business quarter. The true pleasure lies not in rushing from one to the next, but in settling into a comfortable chair, ordering something refreshing, and watching the city unfold beneath you.
