Nantes may sit a few dozen kilometres from the Atlantic coast, but the culinary soul of this Loire-Atlantique city is deeply tied to the sea. As a historic port nestled along the Loire River, Nantes has long served as a gateway for fresh catches traveling inland from the fishing hubs of La Turballe and Les Sables-d’Olonne. Today, the city’s dining scene reflects this maritime heritage with a remarkable variety of seafood establishments, ranging from unassuming oyster bars to refined gastronomic tables.
Whether you are visiting the historic Bouffay district or exploring the creative energy of the Île de Nantes, you are never far from a plate of pristine shellfish or a perfectly seared fillet of line-caught fish. The local dining culture values seasonality and traceability, meaning menus change frequently based on what the Atlantic yields that morning. For seafood lovers, this translates into an eating experience that feels authentic, immediate, and distinctly connected to the nearby coast.
The following selection highlights the best seafood restaurants in Nantes for a variety of occasions and budgets. You will find classic brasseries serving heaping plateaus de fruits de mer, contemporary bistros reinventing regional recipes, and intimate counters where the oyster shucker is the star of the show. Each venue has been chosen for its consistent quality, sourcing standards, and ability to deliver a memorable meal.
Because Nantes is a compact and walkable city, many of these restaurants are within easy reach of the main tram lines and the historic center. It is worth noting that the French dining schedule is fairly strict, with lunch service typically running from noon to 2 p.m. and dinner starting around 7:30 p.m. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially on weekends, as the most popular seafood addresses fill up quickly with both locals and visitors.
While this list focuses on restaurants located within Nantes itself, the surrounding region offers additional coastal dining opportunities for those with a car. That said, the establishments below prove that you do not need to leave the city limits to enjoy some of the finest fruits de mer in western France. From briny oysters to delicate sole meunière, these kitchens celebrate the ocean with confidence and restraint.
Below, you will find a curated list of standout seafood destinations, followed by practical tips for navigating the local dining scene like a seasoned regular.

Very very average to poor quality food.
Poor frites
Low quality fish
And I have no idea what was in the sauce. They say French food is the best in the world; well not in this restaurant. Unless you are starving!

We chanced upon this restaurant on our visit to Nantes and came back a 2nd time before we depart. My kids love it very much. Very fresh and Sweet Crevettes rose (shrimp) that beats those in La cignel. Don't be afraid to support business that are not on the tourism guide.
Enjoy watching chef prepare the food delicately while we are seated on ground floor. Bonus points to have a Zendaya look alike waitress serve us at both times.
👍👍👍

Excellent seafood and service.
Update: second time in Nantes in 10 months. Came here again on the first night. Excellent as ever. Pics added too this time.

I came on a rainy afternoon, and it was a very busy time. The staff were so kind to offer to move a table under the awning to allow me a seat💕I was going to be sad I won’t be able to try any seafood in Nantes as I was leaving the city tomorrow, but thanks to the staff it made my day. The seafood was fresh & tasty! I will remember this shop when thinking of Nantes! Thank you for the experience!

Great selection with value for money with fast service. Ordered the fish and chips (point for improvement: quantity of sauce should be tripled at least) and mussels. Next to the gay bar Les Sir Carmes with good dance music being played.

Amazing experience at OHMYFISH restaurant. The seafood was very fresh, and everything tasted high quality. The bread was perfectly crunchy on the outside while staying soft inside, and the cheese was rich and flavorful.
I went there with friends and we had a great time. The staff were also really kind and welcoming, which made the atmosphere even better.
Definitely worth a visit!

Very comfortable atmosphere and very kind people who prepared all the meals. We have tried several rolls and desserts, they are all incredibly delicious! We need to come back for more seasonal meals!

We've been here multiple times already and the quality is consistent and fresh! The rolls are always tasty and so are the bowls. We've recently tried a different place that also sells fish rolls, not as good. This is the spot if you want a fresh seafood roll!

A very nice restaurant for an excellent Fruit de mer. But also recommended for meatlovers. Tasty foie gras and filet de boeuf. If only all the guests could behave theirselves..🤦♂️ (clapping and fingerclicking for service…). A big Thank you to the good service from the well-dressed staff.

Found this place talking to an Uber driver and the nearby Novotel hotel front. I stopped by for lunch and was impressed. The food was solid all round. Ordered a St Jacques and grilled Zander. Both dishes were top notch. Waitstaff were attentive and efficient. So, highly recommend you pay this place a visit if you happen to be visiting Nantes and staying near the riverside.

La Loco, located in the heart of Nantes, is a restaurant that should not be missed. We visited for dinner and found it easily accessible, with convenient parking available right in front of the restaurant, which is free after 19:00.
Upon arrival, we were immediately impressed by the inviting atmosphere. The spacious interior, filled with natural light from the large windows, creates a warm and welcoming ambiance. A bartender skillfully preparing cocktails added to the lively environment. We started with a Moscow Mule as an appetizer, and it was exceptionally delicious, perfectly setting the tone for the evening. We were promptly seated, and our order was taken without delay.
For our meal, we chose the lobster risotto and the roasted duck with potatoes. Accompanying our dishes, we selected a white wine recommended by our server, which you can see in the attached photos. Both dishes were outstanding—the duck was incredibly flavorful, and the risotto was perfectly al dente, generously served with tender lobster. The recommended wine was exceptional, offering a delightful complement to our meal.
For dessert, we opted for the pineapple carpaccio, which was also delicious. Overall, I would rate La Loco a solid 5 stars and would not hesitate to return on my next visit to Nantes.
The total cost for the evening, including dessert, wine, dinner, and a cocktail, was 90€

Two solid meals before heading to Mont Saint-Michel
We dined at La Loco twice — once for lunch, and once for dinner — before our trip to Mont Saint-Michel. The experience much better than expected — classic French brasserie food, warm atmosphere, and solid execution all around.
Lunch was casual but satisfying: a platter of oysters on ice, a hearty steak-frites, and a quick crème brûlée. Later in the evening, we returned for something a bit more elaborate — lobster and the risotto both great.
For a brasserie so close to the station, the evening service and ambiance leaned toward fine dining, with warm lighting and elegantly presented dishes that exceeded expectations.
📍Tips: Oysters and seafood mains are fresh and generously portioned.

I practically never write reviews, but now I had too.. Wauw, we spend our last evening of our family vacation in Nantes. It was one of the best dinners we had in France. It looks fancy, it is fancy, but very welcoming for our kids as well. The staff was fantastic. Adeline welcomed us at a beautiful table and made a fantastic wine and dessert recommendation! 🙂 Food & drinks came fast, but not too fast. And every single dish was delicious! Adeline even noticed our son was hungry and asked if his food should maybe come with our appetizers! And when the bread basket was empty, she filled it up again! The other male waiter (don’t know his name) was great as well. He took the kids inside to let them hold a living lobster.. This place made the end of our vacation perfect!! Thanks to the service (Adeline and the other waiter) and the good food, briefly the whole team! We will definitely go back when in Nantes again!

The service was super friendly and attentive, the prices were fair, and the food was delicious. This place is perfect for a group of people with different tastes - whether you love seafood, just want to try a little, or don’t eat seafood at all, everyone will find something great to enjoy. The menu has plenty of variety and everything we tried was excellent. And the dessert - absolutely yummy! Highly recommended.

Had a lovely meal here. Maybe one of the best meals in Nantes. The oysters are so fresh that we have to make another order. Very reasonably priced as well! Great pairing with the wine. I like the sea/river snails as well. The shrimp is so so but still okay. Also really love the baguette they provided. The service is really fast and friendly.

Amazing seafood tapas and local wines. The food is prepared with care and skill, with amazingly fresh ingredients. The wine pairs well and is not expensive. Staff were very kind and we loved our evening bite sitting outside.

It was the sign that drew me in; instead of Happy Hour, they offered Happy Huitres!
I enjoyed a half dozen freshly shucked, locally sourced oysters and a glass of lovely Muscadet... then I enjoyed another half dozen!
Sitting inside where it was cooler, I could watch the small team working swiftly and well.
I'm glad I'm in Nantes for a week because I will happily return to this delightful little place to try more of their offerings.

We had a delightful time at Le Homard Frites. Our server was friendly and welcoming and the food was excellent. A delicious lobster roll heaped with lobster meat that was as good as many we have eaten in Eastern Canada and the US. Highly recommended.
panagiota pantazi★★★★★
Very attentive service , the lobster was really good and you get bottomless fries too( not that they were needed) . We especially loved the tartinable de saumon and the desserts ( tiramisu nantais was light and creamy and the mousse Chocolat was fantastic ) .
Brid★★☆☆☆
We visited recently and both ordered the lobster roll and for dessert, tiramisu nantais. The lobster sandwich looked incredible aesthetically when we received it but looks were very deceiving. It was filled with shrimp and apples with a no taste sauce. Normally, the lobster should be buttery with maybe mayo, celery, lemon, chives, pepper etc. For dessert, we were told that it was 'nantais' tiramisu with mascarpone and caramel. However, we received a glass of mascarpone w/caramel sauce and a biscuit at the top. To call it a 'tiramisu', you have to have at least some components to a regular tiramisu (coffee, marsala, lady fingers, cocoa etc) but this just had mascarpone. They were very nice and asked me if I would like something else but I didn't want anything. The fitout of the café is actually quite nice but it was completely empty when we went when all other restaurants had queues. I wish them well as running a restaurant is not easy.

A very good place for a lobster lunch. Must try in Nantes. Merci bien.

Just sat enjoying the last of my muscadet wine after having a fantastic lobster roll. The food, wine and service were all top quality. If I'm ever back in Nantes this will be one of my first places to visit.

Beautiful place for moules-frites in a historic building with a tiny façade that's easy to miss, but there's actually a hidden courtyard behind the building surrounded by lush plants, it's a brilliant place for either lunch or dinner. Great service with a smile, clean, and really excellent local mussels. As you can see we practically licked our plates clean!
Sarah Aylward★★★★☆
I liked the quaint old building which provided a nice atmosphere, The service was polite but rushed, also slow but It was super busy.
We opted for the 2 course lunch, I had the salmon terrine starter and husband had the Herring salad, neither of us were fans if I'm being honest.
We both chose the moules with chorizo, they were not bad but not great. The sauce was a bit thick and the moules very very small which I don't overly enjoy.
I personally wouldn't go back but there was nothing wrong either.

Walked in on a Sunday night, where many restaurants had been selective on their customers. This restaurant treated me well and offered me a table immediately.
I was so surprised with the quality of the mussels and sauce. I had the chorizo mussels, it’s the first time i had mussel frites where there is no bad mussel and all of them were fresh. The sauce was so good that I wished I had more fries or breads to dip into to have it. Very happy with my visit here.

Went for lunch with a few friends and had a lovely time there. The staff was very friendly and the moules were all excellent. You can also order unlimited fries! Even if you’re full at the end you must order at least one scoop of their buckwheat ice cream - unforgettable

My wife and I had a great dinner there. Thank you so much for the evening! Food was flawless, dessert even an experience of whole different, creative flavours. Service was friendly and welcoming, and the music and atmosphere just great. Prices were appropriate and even lower than expected. Can very much recommend this place.
Tips for Enjoying Seafood in Nantes
Understanding a few local customs and dining habits will help you make the most of your seafood experience in Nantes. The city’s restaurants take pride in their sourcing, and knowing how to order, what to expect, and when to visit can elevate your meal from good to unforgettable. These practical tips cover everything from choosing the freshest options to pairing your food like a local.
-
Start with oysters, but know your sizes. Oysters are graded by number, with lower numbers indicating larger specimens. A number 3 is a balanced everyday choice, while a number 2 offers more flesh. Ask for a mix of fines de claire and spéciales de claire if you want to compare brininess and texture.
-
Embrace the plateau de fruits de mer. If you want the full Atlantic experience, order a seafood platter for the table. It typically includes oysters, whelks, prawns, langoustines, and sometimes a small crab. Eat the cold items first, then move to the warm shellfish, and use the provided finger bowl without hesitation.
-
Ask what arrived that morning. The best seafood restaurants in Nantes work with daily deliveries from the coast. Rather than ordering from memory, ask your server for the arrivage du jour, or the day’s fresh catch. This is often a simply grilled or pan-seared fish that is not on the printed menu.
-
Pair with Muscadet or a crisp white. The local wine of the Nantes region is Muscadet, a dry, mineral-driven white made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. It is a classic match for oysters, mussels, and grilled fish. If you prefer red, a light Loire Valley Pinot Noir can work with meatier fish like tuna or monkfish.
-
Respect the French service rhythm. Lunch is often a calmer, more affordable time to enjoy seafood, with fixed-price menus offering excellent value. Dinner is more leisurely and can stretch for two hours or more. If you are dining after 8 p.m., expect a relaxed pace and do not rush the kitchen.
-
Do not skip the small shellfish. While oysters and lobster get the attention, local specialties like bulots (whelks) served with garlic mayonnaise, or tellines (tiny clams) sautéed with parsley, offer a true taste of the Atlantic coast at a fraction of the price.
The beauty of eating seafood in Nantes is that the city never tries to overshadow the ingredient itself. Sauces are often simple—lemon, butter, herbs, or a splash of Muscadet—allowing the freshness of the Atlantic to take center stage. Whether you are seated at a marble-topped counter slurping oysters or enjoying a long lunch on a sunny terrace, the connection between the port, the river, and the sea feels immediate.
As you plan your culinary itinerary, remember that the best meals often come from asking questions and trusting the recommendations of the people behind the counter. Nantes may not be a coastal resort town, but its seafood restaurants prove that the city remains one of the most rewarding places in France to eat from the ocean.
