Nantes may be known for its rich maritime history and the mechanical wonders of Les Machines de l’Île, but the city has quietly cultivated a formidable reputation for meat lovers. Over the last decade, the dining scene here has shifted from traditional brasseries to sophisticated, produce-driven establishments that take red meat seriously. Whether you are a local looking for a new favorite spot or a traveler seeking a memorable meal after exploring the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, the steakhouse landscape in Nantes offers surprising depth and variety.
The secret to Nantes’ steakhouse success lies in its connection to the surrounding Loire-Atlantique region. Local farms supply many of the city’s top tables with premium beef, including the highly prized Maine-Anjou and Limousin breeds. This farm-to-table approach means that many restaurants feature menus that change with the seasons, ensuring that the cut on your plate is not only fresh but also reflective of the region’s agricultural heritage. It is a level of quality that discerning diners have come to expect from a city of this caliber.
Of course, a great steakhouse is about more than just the quality of the beef. The atmosphere plays a critical role in the overall experience. Nantes offers a compelling spectrum of settings, from intimate, candlelit dining rooms perfect for a romantic evening to lively, modern spaces ideal for business dinners or celebrations with friends. Many of these establishments are helmed by passionate chefs who obsess over the precise aging process, the char on the crust, and the perfect resting time before the steak reaches your table.
As you explore the best steakhouses in Nantes, you will notice that the definition of a “steakhouse” has evolved. While classic entrecôte and ribeye remain staples, many chefs are now incorporating innovative techniques and global influences. You might find a perfectly seared onglet served with a chimichurri sauce, or a dry-aged côte de bœuf paired with a bold red wine from the Loire Valley. This blend of tradition and creativity makes the city’s meat scene genuinely exciting for culinary adventurers.
Navigating the sheer number of dining options can be overwhelming, especially if you are visiting for a short time. You want to avoid the tourist traps and find the places where locals genuinely love to eat. That is why we have done the research for you, focusing on establishments that consistently deliver on meat quality, cooking precision, service, and overall ambiance.
Below, you will find a curated list of the 15 best steakhouses in Nantes. Each venue has been selected for its commitment to excellence and its unique contribution to the city’s vibrant food culture. From classic French institutions to contemporary grills, this guide covers the essential destinations for any carnivore in the City of the Dukes.

Nice steak frites option. I found the staff to be very pleasant and there was a great atmosphere. In my opinion the steak frites wasn’t as good as other chains like Swiss Butter or Le Relais de l’Entrecôte but it was still good.

They only have set menu for which you get a salad (lettuce with walnuts) and entrecôte for €23. You can also order dessert for €7-8.5. Unlimited fries.
Better to queue before it opens at 7pm (otherwise there is a high chance of long wait).
Ask for mustard - it’s delicious.
The service was surprisingly very friendly!
Lazy Jump★★★★★
They serve the pinnacle of French steak with splendid sauce. They only have a single main menu. So all you need is to decide how well you want the steak cooked. Then they serve salad and unlimmited fries which are addictive.
They service is super friendly. They have red Bordeaux wine of splendid value. They are children friendly.
The steak sauce is a must. We ate with everything they served. I cannot have enough if it.
I will definitely return again and again.
By the way, prepare to queue up. Everybody wants to dine here everyday.
Marco Simone Zuppone★★★★★
It's an experience. They have just one main:the entrecôte, served with chips and a tasty green salad with walnuts.
Nice choice of wines and desserts. The service is kind and quick. The meat was outstanding. It arrives finely sliced and soaked in sage butter. The portion is generous. They even asked me if I wanted a fries top up. The price is more than reasonable. The que is massive but generally quick. I'd reccomend arriving before it opens. It's an experience you need to have if you visit Nantes.

This place was a former prison apparently ; so, the atmosphere here was a bit spooky but nice. I had andouillette sausage with fries. The andouillette was good, but definitely an acquired taste. The fries were very crispy and tasty. I tried the steak from my friends but not a huge fan of rare steak, so it wasn’t for me. We also had chocolate profiteroles. They filled them with ice cream instead of cream. I prefer the cream filled ones for sure. They were okay, not impressed.

We had a wonderful dinner at this restaurant in Nantes. The atmosphere is very special — the building appears to be a former prison, and it has been beautifully renovated and decorated, giving the place a unique character. We tried the foie gras to start, which was excellent, and then enjoyed a variety of dishes. The salmon was perfectly cooked and served with delicious baked potatoes, while others at the table chose the burger, which was also very good. We stayed for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. The staff were pleasant, attentive, and helpful throughout.
One tip: avoid the sausage 🙂

Prison Du Bouffay is a lovely french restaurant in the center of Nantes with a large indoor seating area. Loved the decor and atmosphere revolving around the fact that the building used to be a prison. Food was delicious and staff very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!

Came here after Hellfest on 22 June, as we usually do, and once again it did not disappoint.
We initially booked a table for 20 people at 7:30 pm, with another six joining us by 8:00 pm. Despite the size of our group, everything was handled brilliantly.
Our server (who also took the fantastic photo attached) was absolutely amazing. They were incredibly patient in helping us order in English and explaining the menu. While everyone was deciding what to eat, they made sure no one at the table was ever without a drink.
We ordered nine côte de bœuf steaks, along with several ribeyes and fillets, and every meal arrived correctly and without any issues. The food was excellent, and the service was outstanding from start to finish.
One of the best dining experiences we’ve had, and we’ll definitely be back again. Highly recommended!
Richard Hill★★★★★
Originally booked as a group of 20 with an hour's notice but expanded to 26 which was not a problem and accommodated easily.
All drinks (6 rounds) and food (starter and main) ordered were perfectly delivered except 1 steak which was taken back and a fresh one given with no issues at all.
Our waitress was an absolute star and kept up easily with all of us and the orders an absolute joy.
Prison is THE Steakhouse in Nantes and there is no competition. As a group we eat at Prison every year at least twice and there is a reason why we do.

A truly magical place from start to finish.
A warm welcome upon arrival and swift seating to a cosy seat with view of the open stove… which brings me to the food. Exceptional!! The trio of terrine was a delight, bursting with flavour and texture, they were a real treat. For main we chose Cote de Boeuf, which came in 3 different grades. We chose VBF (product of France) rather than the 23 or 49 day aged options as it was my partners first experience of Cote de Boeuf. It came just as ordered, accompanied by chips, salad and two sauces (Roquefort and Dijon mustard) which were home made - and you could tell! Delicious. My partner throughly enjoyed her first experience (as did I for my second!), and has spoken fondly of it since our visit! The white wine was also very good and went down well. We didn’t have enough room for dessert after our feast, but we were not made to feel rushed at all as there is only one dinner service in the restaurant. Although my French is limited, the staff were patient and spoke English where I could not understand which was appreciated. On departure we even joined the owner (who is the chef), waiter and some locals for an appertif at the bar which was also a lovely touch. Very sad that the evening had to end but we will be sure to visit again - and would quite happily visit for an overnight trip from the UK just to eat here again… next time we’ll be ordering the aged Cote du Boeuf 😋
Merci beaucoup!!

I cannot remember a more pleasant evening than my solo dinner at Le Josephine B. The owners are kind and welcoming as are the other diners. My rillettes de haddock and saucisse de muscadet (oh and the frites!) were just delicious, the meat cooked over a wood fire. The wines by the glass (a muscadet and a red blend from Languedoc) were lovely. I especially appreciated the conversation with staff and patrons and a very kind after dinner drink shared with the owner. Thank you to all.

What an AMAZING place. They were so welcoming and happy to have us. We had two children (under 10) and 2 adults. The food was brilliant (the tomahawk for 2 was mouth-wateringly tender and cooked to perfection) the kids were offered sausage or steak which was lovely as I’m sick of kids not being offered smaller options of adults meals. The chef was conscientious enough to cook the kids meals first so they were happy as we chose what we wanted. They talked us through the menu, they were funny, kind and patient. We even finished off the visit with a baby Guinness. What stand up gents!! Best meal so far in France and made our visit to Nantes. Can’t recommend it enough!!!!

Very nice restaurant, with good ambience, welcoming staff and most important very delicious food.
We had strak tartare, very delicious!
Service is super fast, we asked for some extra bread and butter later on, it literally appeared on the table in less than minute 😮.

We stumbled across this restaurant just as it opened on Sunday evening at 7pm. We were one of the first to sit down. Our order was taken quite quickly with two drinks, starter and mains. Our shared starter for two came out before our drinks and it was quite a while before our drinks came out. The shared starter was absolutely lovely though and would definitely recommend this. We then had a really long wait for our mains, in the meantime we ordered some more drinks. Our bavette steak with pepper sauce and chips was taken to the wrong table, and eventually our beer turned up I didnt get my wine! The dinner was really nice the chips were cooked well, the sauce a little watery but the steak was nice. The food is good but it's really lacking the service sadly but a nice restaurant. I feel like they need to do less and do them well, they just seems to be stretching themselves too far.

This is the best thing that happen to us after being disappointed by the hotel we booked right next to it.
The bar is lively, well decorated and clean. The young waitress who served us is very welcoming and polite. She is english speaking and friendly too. We enjoyed her hospitality very much.
The bar serves a good variety of drinks and beer on taps. The seats were adequately spaced out so everyone has their space to interact within themselves. We had a couple of drinks and settled dinner there. It is a lovely evening spent there.
Highly recommended for hotel guests (next to it), and anyone in the vicinity to come enjoy a good dinner and some drinks.

Good restaurant for some red meat. The team, as well as our waiter, was friendly and attentive. Food was good. The banofi for dessert was really good. Only thing I regret was the too small amount of salad with my dish! Overall a good place to eat!

Simply outstanding, best grill in town. I had the black angus and it was pretty good, maybe the pepper sauce was not spicy enough for my taste... But i had the chance to taste the pork ribs and bam! Insta-new-client! I also have to mention the good service: they are very kind and friendly to the clients (and that is not very common here in France in my experience) so everything was great for my wife and me.

Storm Dial★☆☆☆☆
Disappointed with my last lunchtime visit to Les Pedzouilles.
Looking at the menu, I thought I'd get a starter and a main course for €16.50. In the end, I paid €30 (€22.50 for the salmon and €7.50 for the egg mayonnaise 🥲), simply because I hadn't specified that I wanted to order from the à la carte menu. My colleague, on the other hand, paid €14 for the exact same main course?!
As I don't consume lactose, the waitress offered to replace the salmon in cream sauce from the set menu with regular salmon, implying that it wouldn't change the price. Since this wasn't very clear, I asked her to confirm again right after ordering. When the bill arrived, I finally discovered that this choice took me out of the set menu, resulting in a €30 charge, while my colleague had the same main course for €8.50 less. I had asked for clarification before being served.
I rarely leave negative reviews, but I truly felt misled. My comment is simply intended to bring this issue to light, without questioning the quality of the restaurant or the service, which isn't always easy with the lunch rush.
Aside from this experience, the setting is very pleasant and the restaurant remains a great place to eat.

I absolutely loved this restaurant. The welcome was incredible, the staff were so kind, smiling, attentive, and offered excellent advice.
This place exudes authenticity and conviviality.
The food is divine, made with fresh, local ingredients. The chuck roast was cooked to perfection; the meat was flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth tender. My sincere congratulations to the chef who runs the kitchen single-handedly. From the appetizer to the dessert, everything was perfect and delicious.
We will definitely be back.

What can I say?!
I'm bursting with excitement, my stomach is so full!
To be welcomed like family, the waitresses humming along...
What a delicious meal! You can taste the chef's pleasure and passion on every plate.
A culinary discovery I absolutely loved, a special mention for the Eggs Benedict!
If you're a meat lover, you've come to the right place!
It starts off strong with the enormous charcuterie board!
Thank you to the team for the warm welcome, the smiles, and the friendliness!

Visiting from the UK, we normally have our dinner around 6pm and we were delighted they were open for business. For comparison we would say it's the equivalent to a popular family friendly steakhouse chain found all over UK. The staff spoke very good English and was able to help us make informed decisions for dinner. To sum it up the service was excellent, food was good, came out hot and fresh although the hot wings were a little on the BBQ burnt crispy side but I didn't mind that.
Yo Bo★★★★☆
The fastest waiters ever. Seriously. Great food: I always go there for the ribs, which are perfectly succulent, although maybe a little under-grilled this time; the andouillette was good, not brilliant though texture- and taste-wise. The profiterole dessert is one big one with the choux part being a bit thick and soggy, and not enough choc sauce; the mi-cuit was really good, just too small 😉 It is of course a family resto, so expect children.

Mixed feelings about this place.
The atmosphere and interior are beautiful.
The food is very good, but be aware that the restaurant is halal and serves no alcohol. Had I known, I wouldn’t have chosen it, and I don’t think the “Modern French Restaurant” label reflects this at all. This should be stated clearly.
Service was welcoming and pleasant, but too rushed: our food arrived just after our drinks. Some sauces were also mixed up or missing.
The dessert (the fingers) was absolutely delicious.

The steak was excellent, cooked to perfection, but the bone-in veal was a bit too tough and difficult to chew; the onion sauce was a good accompaniment.
There are no high chairs for children, but the staff were very friendly towards toddlers.

A mixed experience for our group. While the setting was charming and the service absolutely impeccable, the food didn't always live up to expectations. The charcuterie lacked character, which is a shame given the restaurant's intended level of quality. The starters, main courses, and desserts were all well-executed, but the value for money remains questionable: at €70 per person, the absence of a small gesture of goodwill, such as a digestif, leaves a bitter taste.

A must-visit for meat lovers. Their dry-aged beef is simply incredible; you can taste the craftsmanship and quality in every bite.
The team is truly top-notch: attentive, friendly, and very accommodating. You feel welcome from start to finish, with a genuine commitment to service.
The food is always excellent, and their recommendations, whether for dishes or wines, are spot-on and insightful. Speaking of wines, we're always delighted with their suggestions.
A sure bet where pleasure and quality are always guaranteed.

A lovely restaurant for our 10th anniversary with my wife, with a magnificent view of the Loire. The service was very pleasant and attentive, with little touches that made all the difference. The food was excellent, from the tuna appetizer to the veal and Iberian presa. The extra peas on the plate added a touch of color, making it a truly delightful dish. The desserts were delicious, and the wine pairings were perfectly chosen. Thank you for a wonderful time.

I'd definitely go back! A truly wonderful place with exquisite dishes; the lamb confit is one of the best I've ever had. The portions are generous, especially the "café gourmand," which is also a must-try as each sweet treat bursts with flavor. The wine is also excellent, and the service is impeccable. A major plus for me is their acceptance of restaurant vouchers (both card and paper) and holiday vouchers, which is hard to find these days, yet seems perfectly logical. So thank you, and I'll be back very soon.

We had a wonderful time at La Table des Bons Vivants. The dishes were excellent, prepared with high-quality ingredients, and the meat was particularly tender. The service was pleasant and attentive. A truly excellent restaurant that we highly recommend and where we will gladly return.

Don't let the neighborhood fool you, this place makes amazing food. The service is top notch even if they are a bit short staffed (get an early reservation around 8ish).
The main dishes are very good, and the sauces are killer. This is a french restaurant so the food will be pretty rich. The portions are great for adults and even better for kids.
The kids menu has two options, chicken tenders, and pates forrestieres (linguini with chicken in mushroom sauce) which are Devine but super rich. Kids me u comes with sweet drink and dessert.
For dessert get the brioche french toast, it's pretty crazy decadent (in the best of ways).
The only downside for us is as they got busy, around 9 ish, they forgot some of our small end of meal orders (coffee), but wasn't a deal breaker.
We also didn't know you had to get the check and pay at the inside counter.
As it got a bit busier outside it was obviously louder.

A wonderful experience, a very warm welcome, homemade cuisine using only fresh ingredients—they even know the cows for their meat. The people are lovely; they even offered us fresh bones for our two dogs. And most importantly, we ate very well from appetizer to dessert.

Tried it yesterday at lunchtime, a really good restaurant where everything is homemade. The grilled octopus was truly excellent!
The fries looked appetizing. Very friendly service too. I'll definitely be back!

What more can I say that the 5-star reviews haven't already covered?
I loved everything about this "little" neighborhood restaurant. I say "little" because the upstairs terrace adds quite a bit of space and, most importantly, shields you from the busy and noisy street. It's a lovely little haven.
Then there were the dishes: nothing to complain about, everything was perfectly balanced. A big plus in my opinion: all the condiments were available if you wanted to add more. I'm not a fan of salt in food, and here it was just right. And for those who love to add salt before even tasting, there's plenty on the table 😁 (Oh, and steak tartare cut WITH A KNIFE—now that's a sign of quality and expertise!)
As a true music lover, I found the background music perfectly chosen. Chill, not too intense, just the right amount of nostalgia, rock, hip-hop, songs, etc...
And the staff are so friendly... Smiling, attentive, available, and full of good advice.
In conclusion: Go for it!
Tips for Choosing the Right Steakhouse in Nantes
Selecting the perfect spot for a steak dinner involves more than just picking the closest restaurant on a map. The city’s dining culture is diverse, and understanding a few key nuances can significantly elevate your experience. Whether you are a purist who loves a simple grilled ribeye or an adventurer eager to try unique cuts, these practical tips will help you navigate the Nantes steakhouse scene with confidence.
1. Understand the French Doneness Scale
If you are visiting from abroad, be aware that French cooking temperatures differ significantly from those in the US or UK. In France, “bleu” is essentially seared on the outside and nearly raw inside, while “saignant” is very rare with a cool, red center. “À point” translates to medium-rare, which is often the sweet spot for premium French beef, and “bien cuit” means well done. To avoid disappointment, order one level rarer than you normally would if you prefer a pinker center.
2. Look for “Maturation” on the Menu
The best steakhouses in Nantes proudly advertise their aging process. Look for terms like “maturée” (aged), “viande maturée,” or specific aging periods such as 30 or 45 days. Dry-aging concentrates the flavor and tenderizes the meat, resulting in a deeper, nuttier taste. If a restaurant is vague about the origin or aging of its beef, it might be a sign that the quality is not the primary focus.
3. Don’t Skip the French Sauces
While a high-quality steak can stand alone, French cuisine excels in sauces. In Nantes, you will often find classics like Béarnaise, peppercorn (poivre), or Roquefort sauce. However, due to the region’s proximity to the coast, some steakhouses offer a unique twist using local sea salt or butter infused with Guérande salt. Always ask if the sauce is homemade, as this often separates the good restaurants from the great ones.
4. Consider the “Formule” or Set Menu
Dining out in France can be expensive, but many top steakhouses offer a “formule” or “menu du midi” (lunch menu) at a fraction of the dinner price. This usually includes a starter and a main course, or a main course and dessert. If you want to experience a high-end steakhouse without the premium dinner bill, booking a table for lunch is one of the best strategies for travelers and locals on a budget.
5. Pair with Loire Valley Wines
Instead of defaulting to a heavy Bordeaux or a foreign import, embrace the local terroir. The Loire Valley produces exceptional red wines that pair beautifully with red meat. Look for a Saumur-Champigny, Chinon, or Anjou Villages. These wines, often made from Cabernet Franc, offer a slightly earthy, peppery profile that cuts through the richness of the beef without overpowering it, providing a truly authentic regional experience.
6. Book Ahead for Prime Times
Nantes is a bustling city with a strong dining culture, and the best tables—especially in the compact Bouffay district or near the Graslin area—fill up quickly. If you have your heart set on a specific steakhouse, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night, it is highly recommended to reserve a table several days in advance. This is especially true for smaller, intimate venues that prioritize quality over high table turnover.
Finding a great steak in Nantes is rarely a challenge, but finding an exceptional one requires a little local knowledge. The city’s dedication to quality produce, combined with the French mastery of butchery and sauce-making, creates a dining experience that is both comforting and refined. Whether you are sitting down to a massive côte de bœuf meant for sharing or enjoying a perfectly trimmed filet, the attention to detail in these establishments is palpable.
Ultimately, the best steakhouse is the one that matches your specific mood and occasion. Whether you are celebrating a milestone, closing a business deal, or simply satisfying a craving after a long week, Nantes has a venue that will rise to the occasion. By using this guide and the tips provided, you are well-equipped to enjoy some of the finest meat the region has to offer. Bon appétit.
