Almería sits on the sun-scorched southeastern coast of Spain, where the desert meets the Mediterranean in a landscape that feels almost cinematic. Often overshadowed by the Costa del Sol, this Andalusian province offers a raw, unspoiled beauty that rewards travelers looking for history, nature, and authentic Spanish culture. From the only desert in mainland Europe to pristine volcanic beaches, Almería provides a striking contrast to the typical image of crowded Spanish resorts.
The city’s history is layered with Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish influences, but it is the Islamic period that left the most indelible mark on the skyline. The imposing Alcazaba fortress dominates the old town, serving as a constant reminder of the city’s strategic importance during the Middle Ages. Today, that rich past blends seamlessly with a vibrant tapas culture and a laid-back coastal lifestyle.
Beyond the capital city, the province unfolds into a dramatic terrain of arid badlands, whitewashed villages, and protected natural parks. Film buffs will recognize the rugged landscapes of the Tabernas Desert from countless spaghetti westerns and major Hollywood blockbusters. Meanwhile, nature lovers can explore secluded coves, volcanic rock formations, and some of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean.
The unique climate, with over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, makes Almería a year-round destination. Unlike the greener north of Spain, this region offers warm, dry conditions even in the winter months, making it ideal for hiking, sightseeing, and even swimming well into autumn. The light here is special—bright, sharp, and clear—which is exactly why filmmakers and photographers have flocked to the area for decades.
For food lovers, Almería is a hidden gem. The local gastronomy relies heavily on fresh seafood, greenhouse vegetables, and simple, high-quality ingredients. The tradition of free tapas with every drink remains alive here, offering an affordable and delicious way to sample the local cuisine. Dishes like gurullos, migas, and red prawns from Garrucha are essential tastes of the region.
Accessibility is improving, with an international airport connecting the province to major European cities. Yet, even with this growth, Almería retains a sense of authenticity and quietness that is hard to find elsewhere on the Spanish coast. You can wander through ancient streets, hike empty trails, and enjoy a beach day without fighting for space.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, a nature lover, a film fan, or simply someone looking for a genuine Spanish escape, Almería delivers. The following list highlights the most compelling attractions that showcase the very best of this remarkable province, from its urban landmarks to its wild, natural landscapes.

Beautiful experience visiting this unusual cathedral. It's shape is flat on the outside because it's fortified to protect against mediteraneean barbarian attacks , but on the inside it is a beautiful cathedral with quite delicate arches and adorned walls. I highly recommend visiting this historical landmark and it's surrounding!

The Cathedral is beautiful and the painting get stranger as you walk around. I really liked the audio guide. To make it 5 star id have loved to see the organ working

A beautiful catheral that welcomed me as a lover of truth. I entered in the middle of a mass, and at least four people offered to bring me a chair to join the prayers. The Spanish people are among the most kind and accepting people I have met. Their love story with their Cathedrals are awesome.
Mario Bonin★★★★★
Different from the other Catedrale we visited as this one is fortified, very interesting building. The interior is well maintained with a lot of nice art work. Clearly worth the visit if you are in Almeria and you like old architecture and churches. Easy to get walking or biking from the beach esplanade.

Kind staff. Cathedral tour was small, but very beautiful, nice and cozy. Some of the cambers were pretty humid and hot but overall it didn’t bother us as much.

This museum was very nice. When I visited it was showing a fantastic Picasso and Miquel Barcelo ceramic exhibition. That It's very impressive. The museo explained the ancient history of Almería and the Mediterranean. Easy going and a nice place to visit with kids.

No visit as had no cash to pay for the €1.50 non-EU entry fee so couldn't enter. They don't take cards/digital pay and you can't book online. It didn't look interesting enough to go and find an ATM! Top tip - if not from EU, bring cash

Went here with my family (ages from 6 to 40 yo) and we all loved it! It was a lot of very accessible (and free!) knowledge about the history of the area. It has something I've never seen before, which is a visual and physical representation of the soil strates that show the history of the soil of the region, with all the societies that inhabited it. Generally, every single exposition was very well explained and accessible to learn and understand for everyone! Definitely recommend it.

Very good museum! The amount of exhibits is not great but it spans from Paleolithic era to middle ages. Very interesting and unique exhibits!

Ever felt the thrill of unearthing a civilization’s secrets? Museo de Almería pulls you into a journey through time, from prehistoric treasures to Islamic artifacts, all housed in a sleek, modern space. Each exhibit feels like a conversation with the past, vibrant and alive. Did you know the museum showcases Europe’s oldest known loom weights, dating back over 4,000 years to the Los Millares culture? This isn’t just a museum it’s a portal to Almería’s ancient soul. A must for history lovers!

The facility itself is good, directly in front of the beach. There are some fake parking staff around to gather tips for nothing.

Very accessible parking, marred by a couple of very dodgy characters checking inside all the cars. The parking is free but suspect they may be after a "tip" for finding users a space. We, of course, did not partake of their "service".

Very good tourist train only €4 each and lasted 50 minutes. We also were given earphones so we could listen to the commentary in English. Went around all the major sites in Almería and the driver even offered to take out photo.
Carolyn Mason★★★★★
Worth a ride, €4 a person, lasts 60mins. You get to see the city and can hop on and hop off in a couple of places to explore. The audio is on in various languages, including a kids version which was great for us.
Ana Carmen★★★★★
This was an amazing experience. Do not miss it; do not hesitate. It's 4€ and is about a 45 minute route around the city.
It's December and there was no narration. What they do have now are two boxes per row of seats where you can select your language and insert your own headphones. Had I known I would have brought them. So I don't know if they work.
But during this holiday season they play Christmas music (mostly in Spanish) and it became a sing along! The train is filled with families with young kids. I do think they are all locals. It's a really nice Christmas experience for the whole family.
I took the first bus of the evening at 5pm and it filled up. The sign says every 30 minutes but it took us about 45 to make the entire route. No complaints here. When we arrived back at the original pick up point there was a long line of families waiting. It filled up again.
I was alone but thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The music makes it very festive. The driver was super nice and professional. He honks at passersby and everyone waves and some sing along. Really fun.
I highly recommend!
Matt R★★★★☆
Tour is in Spanish. The driver explained this to us beforehand and this for us was not an issue. A gentle lap of the town past the main sites as well a through the narrow residential streets with plenty of friendly waves from the locals. A great way to allow us to plan for the rest of our day. The driver was extremely friendly and courteous and took group photos at the start, overall good value at 3.50 Euros. (Cash only we think)

It has beautiful flowers around it 😊
And you have a nice walkway garden in both sides

To be brutally honest, it was rubbish, lots of building work and road works, most of the shops where shut, and you couldn't get to the town centre as most of the roads are closed. So was not very impressed 😐

Alcazaba of Almería is an absolutely stunning place to visit! The fortress is beautifully preserved, with impressive architecture, peaceful gardens, and breathtaking views over the city and the sea. Walking through its historic walls feels like stepping back in time.
I highly recommend visiting early in the morning, between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. The weather is much cooler, there are fewer visitors, and you can enjoy the site at a relaxed pace while taking great photos without the crowds.
Sam Farr★★★★☆
There's no parking here, but there's car parks close by. It's free to enter, but you can pay for a guided tour. There are a lot of steps. It's a good place to visit and the views are great. There's no cafe on site but there's some vending machines. I would advise taking water with you.
Blue Phantom★★★★★
Muslims built this magnificent castle more than a thousand years ago. Free entry is available for people who live in the EU. Non-EU citizens who live in an EU country are also included. The entry fee for other countries is about €4, if I remember correctly. However, I didn t have to pay anything because I live in an EU country. You can get an audio guide for an extra price, but the website can sometimes be confusing, so don t be upset if it doesn t work easily for you. There are very clean restrooms in the upper part of the castle and near the entrance. Water dispensers are located throughout the building, so don t hesitate to drink water. You will notice the presence of security guards throughout the castle. I recommend choosing a sunny day to visit this wonderful place.
Khalid Desouky★★★★★
Beautiful ❤️. Use Google Maps so you don't overshoot and wake endlessly trying to find the main entrance! Lots of amazing views on the top. Worth it to read up a bit about the history of the fortress before visiting. A must if you're in Almeria!

Beautiful, well-kept courtyard plaza featuring this impressive column / memorial.

Offers a fantastic view over Almería. The area has been cleaned up a lot compared to a few years ago, making it a much more enjoyable spot to visit. There are several ways to reach the top — if you have a car, it’s likely the easiest option, as there are a few parking spots nearby. Otherwise, you can walk up, but be prepared for some long staircases. In the summer heat, the climb can be quite intense, so bring water and plan accordingly.
李雋智★★★★★
Amazing statue that stands on the top of the hill, overlooking the city by the ocean.

Has an amazing view of the city.
There is some reconstruction around the area, which is good because at least they are noticing the poor state of the mountain. But this made it difficult to find the way up, as there were no signs to follow.
There was a lot of garbage on the way up but also around the site.

Well organised and professional excursion on a catamaran with a capacity of 69. Interesting to see Almería city from the sea but to be brutally honest, the view isn't very exciting. The trip leaves the Almería port and travels west to turn round some fish farm cages in view of Roquetas. The trip took just over an hour and was a pleasant way to spend some time doing something different art a modest cost. Worth doing.

Wonderful. The views, the atmosphere, the sea... A fantastic plan!
Cristina García★★★★★
We took the excursion today, Friday, at 3:00 PM, and it was an incredible experience. The entire crew was very attentive and helpful, including Captain Oswaldo, who was very friendly with the group. The whole team gave us explanations and detailed information on how everything works. It's true there was a slight misunderstanding due to the initial communication about the activity, which could be improved by providing advance notice of the details the day before. Despite this, we thoroughly enjoyed the activity. Thanks to the good weather, we were able to stop for a swim, although we understand that this isn't always possible. They also provided us with a snack as compensation for the inconvenience caused by the initial communication issues. I will definitely repeat the experience; it's wonderful that these kinds of activities are starting to be promoted in Almería—it was about time! Thank you for everything!
Isabel Benavente Fernández★★★☆☆
The promenade was spectacular. The weather was perfect, and it couldn't have been more beautiful. The theatrical portion was unnecessary. Instead of focusing on Almería and showcasing important and interesting spots, it was an absurd performance worthy of schoolchildren. The food—some tapas—was served to us after everyone complained about it. The boat...they could really use a new one.

Hello!
Thank you for the great work you do, and please forgive me, but I was unaware of it. I didn't know about the care given to the Saharan wildlife here. I hope the place can be better known and its value recognized. The site caught my eye from the Alcazaba. It has no shade from trees, so the Almería summer must be especially harsh here. But the place had "something" that drew me in. Its ruggedness is striking.
Thank you for trying to help me with my walking stick falling (I have a disability) from the Alcazaba. I hope to visit you next time.
Christopher Garcia★★★★☆
A very pleasant place for a walk, as long as you go when it's not a heatwave. There are no trees to provide shade. A significant drawback these days.

This places is the entrance from the sea road to Rambla de Almeria. The fountains are quite large and help to block out the noise of the traffic that's on all sides. You're effectively on a roundabout.
This whole area is well kept and a pleasant stop in a busy and industrial part of the city. I think the fountains are more appreciated at night when lit up.
Uno más★★☆☆☆
It should seemingly be a place of some interest. You could say that the Almería riverbank begins or ends there, depending on your perspective. The reality is that it's very, very neglected, as you can see in the photo. It's not a place worth stopping to admire. If it were properly restored, it would be a different story.
Jfpeinado★★★☆☆
Located at the entrance to the port, it's simply a collection of fountains that are illuminated at night.
During the day, they provide a refreshing respite from the heat.

Essential Tips for Visiting Almería
To make the most of your time in this sun-drenched corner of Spain, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The region’s climate, geography, and culture are unique, and planning ahead can significantly enhance your experience. Here are some practical recommendations to help you navigate Almería like a seasoned traveler rather than a first-time visitor.
1. Rent a car to explore beyond the city. While Almería’s historic center is walkable, the province’s top attractions are spread out across a vast, rugged landscape. Public transport to places like the Tabernas Desert or remote beaches can be infrequent and slow. Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to chase the sunset in the desert or stop at a secluded cove on a whim.
2. Respect the siesta and late dining hours. Almería operates on a distinctly Spanish schedule. Many shops and museums close between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, reopening in the evening. Lunch is typically served from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, while dinner rarely starts before 8:30 PM. Adjust your internal clock to avoid standing in front of a locked door or an empty restaurant.
3. Bring sturdy footwear for exploration. Many of Almería’s best attractions, including the Alcazaba, the karst landscapes of Karst en Yesos, and the volcanic trails of Cabo de Gata, require walking on uneven, rocky, or steep terrain. Flip-flops are fine for the beach, but you will need proper shoes with good grip for sightseeing.
4. Carry water and sun protection year-round. The dry, arid climate and high UV index mean you can get dehydrated or sunburned even in the winter months. Always have a reusable water bottle, wear a hat, and apply sunscreen before heading out, especially if you plan to hike in the desert or along the coast.
5. Learn a few basic Spanish phrases. Outside the main tourist zones, English is not as widely spoken as in other parts of Spain. Locals are warm and patient, but a simple “buenos días” (good morning), “por favor” (please), and “gracias” (thank you) will go a long way in shops, bars, and small villages. It shows respect and often leads to warmer service and better local tips.
Almería is a province that rewards curiosity and a willingness to slow down. It is not a place to rush through a checklist of sights; rather, it is a destination to savor—where a long lunch, a quiet walk through a Moorish fortress, or a late afternoon swim can be the highlight of your day. The light, the landscape, and the people create an atmosphere that stays with you long after you leave.
As you plan your trip, remember that the best experiences often come from the unexpected detours—a dirt road leading to a hidden beach, a tiny tapas bar with a local crowd, or a viewpoint at golden hour. Let Almería surprise you, and it will quickly become one of your favorite places in Spain.
