10 Pharmacies in Cuenca City Centre

Finding a reliable pharmacy is essential whether you are a resident managing a chronic condition or a traveler dealing with an unexpected headache. In the historic heart of Cuenca, the narrow cobblestone streets and iconic hanging houses are beautiful, but navigating them to find healthcare services can be challenging. Understanding where the nearest "Farmacia" is located can save you valuable time and stress during your stay or daily routine.

Spanish pharmacies are highly regulated and offer a level of care that often surpasses what visitors from other countries might expect. They are not just retail stores; they are health consultation hubs where you can get professional advice on minor ailments without necessarily needing a doctor’s appointment. Pharmacists in Spain are highly trained to assess symptoms and recommend appropriate over-the-counter treatments.

In Cuenca, as in the rest of Spain, you will notice a distinct visual identity for these establishments. Look for the illuminated green cross, which is the universal symbol for pharmacies in the country. Additionally, the word "Farmacia" is usually displayed prominently, often on a white or green sign, making them relatively easy to spot once you know what you are looking for.

The city centre of Cuenca is compact but split between the lower modern area and the upper old town, known as the Casco Antiguo. This geography means that while some pharmacies are clustered near the main commercial streets like Carretería, others serve the residential areas up the hill. Knowing the locations in both zones ensures you are never too far from assistance.

Opening hours in Spain follow a strict regulatory system. Most standard pharmacies operate from roughly 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM and then reopen from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, they typically close at 2:00 PM. However, the system of "Farmacias de Guardia" (on-call pharmacies) ensures that there is always a 24-hour option available for emergencies.

To find the on-call pharmacy for a specific night or holiday, you can usually check the door of any closed pharmacy. They are legally required to post a list of the pharmacies currently on duty in the area. You can also check local newspapers or regional health authority websites for the daily rotation schedule.

To help you navigate the capital of the province of Cuenca with confidence, we have compiled a list of key locations in the city centre where you can find professional pharmaceutical care.

Ricardo from their team speaks really good english and provided 101% customer experience. He is very knowledgeable and gave me guidance on picking the products I needed. Recommended supplements and given instructions. He is proactive in even giving assistance on ordering non available items. He is the best, and this farmacia gave me the best experience. 100% trust on them.

This afternoon and yesterday afternoon I went to your pharmacy to ask about skin problems and buy medicine. Your pharmacist advised me very enthusiastically. I remember the two pharmacists were a tall guy who looked gentle and very devoted to me, and a blonde girl who looked very young and beautiful. Because I was in such a hurry, I didn't have time to remember their names. Apparently he is Ricardo, very good at English. Even if I arrived late or when there were many customers waiting, they still patiently advised me (I was willing to wait for the other guests to leave and then it was my turn because I was afraid of bothering everyone) and they were ready to advise me afterward. Thanks a lot! I will come back and may become a regular customer.
Helen Braddick★★★★★
I had such attentive and helpful service in this pharmacy. It is such an unusual experience to have an English speaking pharmacist. His name was Ricardo and he was willing to "go the extra mile" with us. I would highly recommend English speaking travellers go here as your needs will be clearly understood and met with a friendly manner. A great experience Ricardo. Helen from Australia.

The saleswomen are doing their jobs properly and very kindly, while the owner is behind them trying to sort out her problems without realizing that the customers need to resolve their doubts about the medications they are buying; it's not the first time this has happened to me.
Cristina Garcia Martinez★☆☆☆☆
I went in and there were two people "working." I waited three minutes to be served because one of them was talking and another girl (who clearly saw me waiting) was cutting barcodes and completely ignored me. I should mention that I've been a customer for over 10 years.
almu★★★★★
The staff are incredibly friendly, and the owner is a delight. They offer helpful advice if you have any questions. You can find a wide range of products at affordable prices—nothing too expensive. The opening hours are fantastic for those of us who work late. In short, I can't find a single fault! Keep up the good work!
M MH★☆☆☆☆
The owner is very unpleasant. I went to buy something and she served me, giving me one item. Another girl served me with the rest of my order. Without even checking if I had paid the girl for everything, as I was leaving, she stopped me to tell me I hadn't paid her. In short, this woman's customer service is terrible...

I had already noticed that this pharmacy's prices were high: my partner and I regularly bought Frenadol because I assumed it would cost about the same as any other pharmacy in Cuenca, but it didn't. They charge €2 more here than another pharmacy in Carretería. But what's outrageous is that on March 29th of this year, 2023, I went directly from the emergency room to this pharmacy to buy Acetylcysteine Cinfa. A dark-haired woman with a ponytail (very unpleasant, she literally threw the medication on the counter without even offering me a bag or a receipt) charged me. The price: €8.91. Since I haven't improved over time, my specialist prescribed the same medication again on April 18th, but I decided to go to another pharmacy nearby (Farmacia Rubio, located on Avenida de la Música Española). I was served by a very attentive and pleasant blonde girl with curly hair, who, without my asking, put the product in a paper bag along with the receipt and the prescription from the doctor. I congratulated her on her service. Furthermore, the price she charged me was €4.25. I don't know much about pharmacy, but I can calculate the percentage ratio between two amounts, and the truth is that Elvira's pharmacy on Francisco de Luna Street is, compared to Rubio Pharmacy, 210% MORE EXPENSIVE!!!! They should be ashamed of themselves for charging such exorbitant prices and treating their staff that way. Congratulations to Rubio Pharmacy and my contempt for the others, GOODBYE FOREVER!!!!

Last Saturday we went to this pharmacy to get our son's ear pierced for his birthday, and his dad ended up getting one too! 😂😊 Everything was fantastic from the very beginning. Verónica, who helped us, is lovely: very kind, friendly, and welcoming. She made us feel completely at ease. We're a couple from Valencia with a child, and we were very happy with the service we received, especially the patience and care shown to our son. We'll definitely be back whenever we need to. 100% recommended! THANK YOU VERONICA 🥰🫶

I love it! I want to thank the team at Paula Serrano Pharmacy. They always treat me with so much patience and care, explain everything very well, and advise me on what's best for me. I feel very well looked after. Also, I really like their own brand products; they're high quality and reasonably priced.

I went to pick up some medication, they didn't have it, and they told me they'd order it and that I should come back the next day to pick it up. When I went back the next day and said I was there to pick up an order, they couldn't find it, and after searching for 15 minutes, when they finally found it, they berated me, saying it was my fault for not telling them I had ordered it and would come to pick it up. I had to repeat my information four times because the woman there didn't understand anything. It's clear I won't be going back, and I'll advise my family not to go unless they want to wait a long time to be served and treated as rudely as I was.

An excellent pharmacy. I was surprised by how modern and well-maintained it is: everything is very clean and organized, and they have a wide variety of products. In addition to pharmaceutical care, they offer technological services that make the experience much more convenient. The staff was friendly and professional, answering my questions with a personal touch. It's a pleasure to find establishments like this. Highly recommended.

I wish to inform you that on Saturday I ordered the Multi Dermo soap, and since they didn't have it in stock, they ordered it and told me to pick it up on Monday. To my surprise, when I went to pick it up, they didn't have it and told me I had to pay for it before ordering it. This is very strange to me because this has never happened to me at any other pharmacy. I always ordered it and paid for it when I picked it up. I don't understand why different pharmacies have different procedures.
Esther Moreno Abalos★☆☆☆☆
Good morning: The dermatologist prescribed a compounded formula and strongly recommended that I order it from the pharmacy on Matías and Molina streets. I started using the product and noticed that the treated area was improving, but after 20 days of use, the cream changed texture and color, becoming much darker and developing an unpleasant odor. According to the label on the bottle, the cream had a three-month expiration date, and only 20 days had passed! I contacted the pharmacy by phone to explain what had happened, and the woman who answered told me that I hadn't stored the cream properly or perhaps hadn't properly sealed the bottle, which is why it had spoiled. I regularly use serums and high-end anti-wrinkle day/night creams, and I've never experienced anything like this, not even with other compounded formulas used for different reasons. I'm a staunch advocate of always buying from shops in Cuenca, but experiences like this make me consider other ways of acquiring products. And of course, I've already removed Martías and Molina's Pharmacy from my contact list. Best regards.

Escamilla Pharmacy is a prime example that you don't need to be a huge pharmacy to offer excellent service. Although the premises aren't particularly large, the layout is very efficient, and the sheer number of products and services offered is surprising. They give the impression of having everything you need, and when you do, they know how to guide you quickly. The pharmacy is especially noteworthy for its excellent organization, cleanliness, and friendly staff. They serve you professionally, yet maintain a personal touch that makes you feel comfortable and well-advised. Furthermore, the service is fast and efficient, which is much appreciated when you're in a hurry or simply looking for quick assistance. It's clear that this pharmacy is designed with its customers' daily needs in mind, prioritizing personalized attention and knowledgeable product knowledge. It's a small establishment in size, but big on service, variety, and attention. Without a doubt, a highly recommended pharmacy in Cuenca.

We were passing through and I urgently needed medication. All three employees went out of their way to help me, as the medication wasn't initially in stock. It was ordered for me immediately, and I only had to wait half an hour. The manager even called a doctor to get me another prescription. The three employees were so courteous and helpful that I was able to get everything I needed. Thank you again so much, and I will remember Farmacia Fuente Del Oro and Cuenca. We're spending the summer in a very small town 40 km from Cuenca, where there's no pharmacy. My daughter needs medication to get rid of worms. Since it's Sunday and there's no pharmacy, we called this pharmacy on call, and they told us they wouldn't sell that medication because it requires a prescription. I naturally expressed my concern that the child might get worse, and I also told them that I've been sold that medication many times in Valencia without a prescription. My surprise was the way they sent me to the emergency room or to get by without offering me any alternative medication options. Fortunately, I called another pharmacy, which treated me better and, with better manners, gave me the medication without a problem, or, failing that, something that would work for her without a prescription.

I've been going to the same pharmacy for many years. Previously with María Dolores, and now with Pablo and Elena. They are all very professional and lovely. All four of them: Rosa, Israel, Pablo, and Elena.
Valeria Rivero★☆☆☆☆
The woman who works here is terrible. She's given me the wrong medication several times now. I double-check, and she says she made a mistake, but of course, I've already taken the medication. I'm supposed to be a professional, and I trusted her experience, but it seems that to do things wrong and charge a little more, she sells me the same product line but the most expensive one, even though I've been prescribed others that are cheaper. I don't know why she does it, but she gets both of the only two medications I need wrong, and that could even be considered negligence.
Noemi Garrido Lopez★★★★★
I always go to the same pharmacy, because Rosa and Israel are lovely, a top-notch pharmacy 😊

I'm delighted with this pharmacy. The staff is always friendly, but I especially want to highlight Emilia, who is a delight: attentive, professional, and always ready to help with a smile. You can tell she loves her job and genuinely cares about her customers. It's wonderful to find people like her. I will definitely keep coming back!
Sergi Perruquer★☆☆☆☆
Bad experience and zero empathy. This happened to me yesterday. I called 20 minutes before closing time to ask about a product for my son's wound. They confirmed they had it and that I could come in. I arrived at 9:29 PM (they closed at 9:30 PM) and everything was already closed. I went inside in the dark, and even after reminding them that I had called, the person inside refused to help me. I would understand if they hadn't called, but after speaking to them on the phone, it seemed very unfair and inhumane; this is unacceptable. I don't usually read pharmacy reviews, but now that I'm writing mine, I've read them, and I agree about the opening hours.

Today was their turn to be on duty. It was 8:50 a.m. and there was absolutely NO ONE at the pharmacy. Completely unacceptable!!!

Practical Tips for Visiting Pharmacies in Cuenca

Navigating the Spanish pharmaceutical system can be slightly different from other countries, especially regarding what is available over the counter versus what requires a prescription. Understanding these nuances will help you communicate your needs effectively and ensure you receive the correct medication or advice without unnecessary delays.

  • Look for the Green Cross: While this seems obvious, the illuminated green cross is your beacon. In the old town, some historical facades may have subtler signage, so keep an eye out for the word "Farmacia" etched into the stone or on a small plaque rather than a large neon sign.
  • Ask for "Farmacia de Guardia": If it is late at night, a Sunday, or a public holiday, do not wander the streets looking for an open door. Ask a local or check the sign on the nearest closed pharmacy. The "Farmacia de Guardia" is the designated pharmacy responsible for dispensing urgent medication outside standard hours.
  • Bring Your EHIC or Insurance Details: If you are a traveler from the EU, carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). While you will still likely pay for medication, having this documentation can help the pharmacist understand your background and, in some cases, facilitate the prescription process if you need to see a doctor first.
  • Don’t Underestimate the Pharmacist: In Spain, pharmacists can diagnose and treat many minor conditions, such as allergies, colds, or mild skin irritations. Describe your symptoms clearly, even if there is a language barrier; they are accustomed to helping international visitors and can often recommend an equivalent to the medication you use at home.
  • Be Specific About Generics: Spanish pharmacies frequently dispense generic brands (EFG – Equivalente Farmacéutico Genérico). If you have a preference for a specific brand name, ask for it by name, otherwise, the pharmacist will likely offer you the most cost-effective generic option available.

Whether you are climbing the steep streets to the Cathedral or shopping in the commercial districts below, access to healthcare in Cuenca is well managed and professional. The network of pharmacies in the city centre is robust, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can find the support they need to stay healthy.

By familiarizing yourself with the locations and the local customs surrounding pharmaceutical care, you can ensure that a minor medical issue does not disrupt your experience in this historic Spanish city. Rest assured that the pharmacists in Cuenca are dedicated to providing high-quality care with the discretion and expertise you would expect from a trusted healthcare provider.
