15 Best Shopping Areas in Bilbao

Bilbao’s shopping scene is a masterclass in contrasts, where centuries-old family-run shops stand proudly beside gleaming commercial boulevards. Unlike sprawling suburban malls, the heart of this Basque city offers a dense, walkable retail experience shaped by its industrial heritage and modern design revolution. Understanding where to go means understanding the rhythm of the city itself.

From the cobbled lanes of the Old Town to the wide, elegant avenues of the Ensanche district, shopping here is as much about architecture as it is about acquisition. You will find international luxury brands, but the true soul of Bilbao lies in its local boutiques, gourmet food halls, and artisan workshops. It is a city that invites you to slow down and browse.

The transformation triggered by the Guggenheim Museum has rippled through the local economy, bringing a wave of contemporary fashion and design to the city center. Yet, Bilbao has fiercely protected its traditional commerce, ensuring that hardware stores from 1900 and modern concept stores can coexist on the same street. This creates a unique ecosystem for the curious traveler.

The Basque Country is renowned for its gastronomy, and this extends directly to its shopping culture. Markets here are not just for tourists; they are vital, bustling hubs where locals buy fresh produce, and where you can find the finest tinned seafood, cured meats, and local cheeses to take home. A shopping trip here is inevitably a culinary adventure.

Weather plays a role in your retail strategy, as Bilbao’s frequent drizzle makes its covered markets and indoor galleries particularly appealing. The city is compact, with most major shopping zones connected by a clean and efficient metro system, meaning you can transition from vintage hunting to high-street fashion within minutes.

Whether you are hunting for a one-of-a-kind Basque beret, a cutting-edge designer dress, or the perfect bottle of Txakoli wine, Bilbao delivers with a distinct personality. This guide navigates the essential retail landscapes, ensuring you know exactly where to spend your time and money. Here are the definitive destinations for retail therapy in the city.

Lovely shopping centre in Bilbao. Got loads of stuff for my son's college accommodation for just over €20 in Mr. DIY. PepCo was good, as was H&M for clothing. Media Mart was a good source for small kitchen electrical appliances. Can't remember the name of the restaurant/café but it's to the rear exterior of the shopping centre; food is lovely and the smoothies - delicious!

Nice mall. Not too big but ok for small city
Tushar Moradiya★★★★☆
It is a modern and stylish shopping destination located in the heart of Bilbao, near the Guggenheim Museum and the Nervión River. Designed with a sleek architectural style, the centre blends naturally into the city’s contemporary urban landscape. Zubiarte offers a good mix of international and Spanish brands, fashion stores, beauty shops, and specialty retailers, making it ideal for both everyday shopping and more refined tastes. In addition to shopping, the centre features a variety of cafés and restaurants, providing pleasant spaces to relax and enjoy a meal.

It's a nice place to go and have a nice time, there are plenty places to eat food, and descent stores for clothes, shoes. A variety of fast food restaurants like MC Donald's, KFC, Burger King, and there is also a technology store called Media Makt together with a supermarket at the ground flor.Nothing special other than the usual malls but its nice and clean and worthy for a quick lookout.

Has EVERYTHING you could possibly want lol, as one would expect from a Mall - Cine, Groceries, Arcades, shopping of all types, and more! Easy to access, adjacent to the large & beautiful Parque Doña Casilda - both great places for kids and youth.

Biker At Heart★☆☆☆☆
I went to the parking and came back after dinner - it was closed and being a saturday since we came from France to visit Bilbao and the Basque country on the weekend - the guy answering the bell told us we are closed and come back on Monday - totally unacceptable because no sign outside the Parking of El Corte Ingles provides the parking hours - except a line in Spanish on the back of your parking ticket which can be easily missed. I wonder why this company is indifferent to this, as well as why inspite of speaking on saturday 10:40 pm with the clerc being their door bell - he decided he can’t give the car back. This is misleading and shall to be brought to the attention of the mayor of the city and the office of the PSOE. This business lack of empathy is a trap and not in good faith - we don’t mind paying the amount of the car for the weekend that they were trapping it in, but we certainly do not agree to keeping a tourist car in their garage for the weekend when the tourist has to now find a hotel find a taxi bills and plan of two days in the city when they did not advertise the visiting hours outside their parking place. We then went to the police station and provided a report. Understood its a private business then again there is no indication as you can see from the photos. We hope to find an amicable solution and inform the government of this deliberate lack of information OR public misleading here.

I asked a woman if I could use my fingers for a sample and she said “no” but in this completely disgusted way and kept saying it over and over. So I said it back to her the same way and she looked angry. Hmmm. Wonder why she thinks all tourists are there to take her attitude. Don’t work customer service in a tourist area if you hate tourists. Periodt Other than that, the store is nice, there is grocery to be had there. The sports store is on the seventh floor with good Camino supplies. Good sales if you look closely. Gorgeous bathing suit selection on the lobby level. Just stay away from the woman with spikes on her head and a scowl on her face.

5 stars goes to the fabulous service i recieved in the "tous" section today during my purchase. It felt more than just a sale. Helping me with my spanish and able to translate where required to ensure the best service. Thank you!
Jenny Mcaab★★☆☆☆
The staff working at Renatto & Go were very rude as we were waiting 20+ minutes for a changing room. The set up of the store is multiple brands but you aren’t allowed to pay for things from different brands together. They operate at independent stores. It makes it almost more inconvenient than shopping in a regular mall. You have to keep thinking about whether you just crossed over into another “store”. I can appreciate the convenience for El Corte in doing their bookkeeping with this methodology and I’m shocked at the inconvenience it creates for the customer.

It was a rainy holiday day, not much things to do outdoors , so we decided to have a visit of the mall. I didn't expect Mei liked it so much! We spent whole morning there until 3p.m she still didn't want to leave! Just jumping on the interactive floor projection already a lot of fun for her, and she left the mall sweating! 😅🤣 . It is a kid-friendly mall, the playground, the art corners, the game corners, all are a great help to parents. We will be back for sure when we visit Bilbao again

I went there on Saturday, and I don't understand why even though it's written that on Saturdays every shop is open till 10pm, so why 2 clothes shops (Adidas and Hugo Boss) on how many there are there, were opened, while all the others closed... They had just the cinema, the majority of the restaurants, the bar near the garden, some furniture shop, Mercadona and the Lindt shop opened, so we just went to the only clothes shop opened, with clothes for females too, that is to say to Adidas, where let me tell you that you don't have many options, plus some female clerks who weren't so helpful, but mostly looked like they were infuriated with you or everyone.. and this is why I couldn't buy anything. Then we just went for a coffee and to the cinema.

This was on our list to see in Bilbao. While it was ok, there wasn’t much to see. Even the building itself is not too impressive as some Spanish markets are. On one side, it’s a (mostly fish) market. All the fish you’d like to see, and cuts of beef, and some vegetables. On the other side is the eating are with all the little local pintxos. The ones my husband got were warmed up in a microwave. It was ok to look at, but probably not the foodies’ place to eat. Budget an hour, if that, to check it off. One cool thing might be to take a cooking class here. The website/ QR code is one one of the pictures. The kitchen for the classes looked great, it’s on the second floor.
Iestyn Dallimore★★★★★
Quite the imposing, impressive building situated right on the riverfront - the market itself spans 2 floors and has a swathe of stalls within. Downstairs you can find a pleasant eating area with several small food stalls all selling similar pinchos, snack, and drinks, whilst opposite and upstairs you'll find your more traditional market stalls of butchers, fishmongers, bakers and more. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area! Photos of some pinchos attached

Lively place to stop for some tapas. Great selection available. The upstairs market has good stalls including one that sells gf bread and pastries.

Tips for Shopping in Bilbao

To truly shop like a local in Bilbao, a little cultural and logistical preparation goes a long way. The Basque approach to retail is often characterized by high-quality service and a focus on craftsmanship rather than aggressive sales tactics, so knowing how to navigate the local customs and schedules will significantly enhance your experience.

Embrace the "Siesta" and Sunday Closures
Do not expect to shop in the late afternoon without checking the clock first. Most independent shops and boutiques in Bilbao close for a siesta between approximately 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. While large department stores like El Corte Inglés and chain retailers in the Ensanche often remain open continuously, the charming local shops in the Old Town will shutter their doors. Additionally, almost everything is closed on Sundays, so plan your major shopping days for Monday through Saturday.

Understand the Tax-Free Shopping System
If you are a visitor from outside the European Union, you are entitled to a VAT refund (IVA) on purchases over a certain threshold (usually €90.15) from participating retailers. Look for the "Tax Free" sticker in the window. When making a purchase, ask the cashier for a DIVA tax-free form. You will need to validate this form at the kiosk at Bilbao Airport or the port before you depart the EU to receive your refund on your credit card or in cash.

Carry Cash for the Markets
While credit and debit cards are widely accepted in modern retail stores and shopping centers, the traditional markets, like Mercado de la Ribera, often have vendors who prefer cash for small transactions. If you are planning to buy small quantities of olives, spices, or fresh produce, having a few euros in coins will make the transaction smoother and faster for both you and the vendor.

Prioritize Local Basque Brands
Rather than spending your entire budget on global fast fashion, look for labels that are unique to the region. Look for high-quality leather goods, the traditional txapela (Basque beret) from shops like Sombreros Gorostiaga, or gourmet products like Idiazabal cheese and high-end tinned fish from Conservas Ortiz. These items offer a true sense of place and make for much more authentic souvenirs than generic trinkets.

Wear Comfortable Shoes and Bring a Tote
Bilbao is a city built on hills and wide avenues, and the primary shopping districts are connected by walking bridges and pedestrian streets. You will likely walk several kilometers between the Old Town, the Ensanche, and the Gran Vía. Additionally, Spain has largely phased out single-use plastic bags, so bringing a durable canvas tote bag will save you money on bag fees and make carrying your purchases much easier as you wander from shop to shop.

As you map out your itinerary, remember that the best discoveries often happen when you wander off the main thoroughfares and peek into the side streets of districts like Bilbao La Vieja or Indautxu. The city rewards the patient shopper who values quality over quantity, offering a retail experience that is deeply tied to its Basque identity. Take your time, chat with the shopkeepers, and you will leave with more than just goods—you will leave with stories.
