15 Best Restaurants in Vitoria-Gasteiz

Vitoria-Gasteiz rarely shouts about its culinary credentials the way San Sebastián or Bilbao do, yet that quiet confidence is exactly why eating here feels like a genuine discovery. As the capital of the Basque Country, the city balances its medieval history and green urban planning with a food scene rooted in local product and pintxo culture. Whether you are fueling up before exploring the Cathedral of Santa María or winding down after a walk through the Anillo Verde, the restaurants here offer a depth of flavor that reflects both the fertile Álava plains and the nearby Cantabrian coast.

The local dining landscape is defined by a commitment to seasonal produce, particularly the celebrated alubias de Álava (red beans), Idiazabal cheese, and Rioja Alavesa wines. You will find everything from traditional asadores serving wood-fired lamb to modern, market-driven kitchens that reinterpret Basque classics with technical precision. Because the city is compact and highly walkable, the best strategy is often to drift between the Casco Viejo (Old Town) and the elegant Ensanche neighborhood, stopping for a glass of txakoli and a carefully constructed pintxo along the way.

One of the defining features of dining in Vitoria-Gasteiz is the exceptional value compared to its coastal neighbors. Here, you can experience Michelin-level technique and ingredient sourcing without the inflated price tag or the need to book months in advance. The local clientele is discerning; they expect high-quality olive oil, perfectly grilled fish, and vegetables that taste like they were picked that morning. As a result, restaurants that fail to meet these standards simply do not survive in this competitive yet unpretentious market.

Navigating the city’s food scene requires understanding its rhythm. Lunch is the main event, typically served between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM, and many restaurants offer a menú del día that represents astonishing value. Dinner starts late, rarely before 8:30 PM, and is often a lighter affair focused on pintxos, raciones, and socializing. Understanding this cadence will help you eat like a local rather than a tourist who finds themselves staring at a closed kitchen at 6:00 PM.

The historic center, with its narrow, atmospheric streets, is the epicenter of the pintxo crawl. Here, you will find crowded bars where the art of the miniature culinary composition is taken very seriously. The contrast between these lively, standing-room-only spaces and the more formal dining rooms of the Ensanche provides a complete picture of the city’s gastronomy. Both experiences are essential to understanding why Vitoria-Gasteiz has quietly become one of the most satisfying food destinations in northern Spain.

While the Basque Country is famous for its seafood, Vitoria-Gasteiz’s inland location means that its culinary identity is more heavily influenced by agriculture and livestock. This is a city that celebrates the humble potato, the wild mushroom, and the slow-cooked legume. The result is a cuisine that feels hearty, grounding, and deeply connected to the land, offering a welcome counterpoint to the fish-centric menus of the coast.

To help you navigate this rich culinary landscape, we have curated a list of the 15 best restaurants in Vitoria-Gasteiz. These selections span the spectrum from traditional asadores to contemporary tasting menus, ensuring that whether you are seeking a quick pintxo or a multi-course celebration, you will find a table that exceeds your expectations.

We found this restaurant by chance on Google and the reviews convinced us to go. The food is amazing, really high standard and the service was outstanding. Menu in English is available and the staff speaks English very well. The restaurant was full with local people enjoying their Thursday lunch. We highly recommend it.

Our meal was wonderful it was the beef dish for two, called txuleton. Served with toasted red pepper, and fries. A glass of delicious red wine and bread. We don't speak Spanish and one server spoke some English and they have the menu in English as well. Very accommodating. We are outside on a beautiful fall day

The fish is very fresh and light cooked. I like it very much. If the fish could be served with some side dish, it would be ideal! The wine taste good with an attractive price!

Amazingly delicious pintxos in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We ordered and sat at the counter in front of the beer taps. Service was excellent and we both loved each item we chose. I wanted to stay and order more, but alas it was getting busy and we reluctantly gave up our spot.

This tapas bar is a delight. Great service and value for money. We were lucky to find a small table.

We stampled at this place looking at google for a place to eat passing by on our way to Getaria. Everything the tapas we ordered was very good and tasty. Staff were v helpful. Their restaurant beside it was also full which is also a good sign. Highly recommend.

The atmosphere was welcoming and pleasant. However, an improvement would be to have a host or hostess to escort guests to their reserved tables. For example, we had to wait for the waitress to serve other customers before being seated. The waitress that day did not speak English, which is unusual for a restaurant. I recommend the team to ensure at least one staff member can communicate in English, especially for foreign visitors. The waiting time between courses was reasonable; we didn’t have to wait long during the service. The food was decent, though I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the risotto and dessert. They were tasty but could be improved. Overall, it was a good experience.

Wow, really a nice experience done at this restaurant. We ordered Menu and a lot of variety was presented. Food was really tasty and presentation was remarkable. It was really a worth visit to PerretxiCo. Staff was also niceful and served nicely. Recommended from my so sweet.

We found Sukalki on Google when arriving in Vitoria-Gasteiz and decided to give it a try with my wife and two kids. The environment was fine, the service was friendly, and at first glance the food looked amazing. Unfortunately, everything was overwhelmingly salty. It seems they use a special salt in all their dishes and are quite proud of it, but neither the kids nor the adults at our table were able to enjoy the food because of it. The wagyu picanha itself was excellent quality, and after carefully removing the salt we could finally taste and enjoy it — but that was the exception, even the potatoes were salty. When we mentioned this to the waiter, he admitted he also found the food salty when he first joined, but eventually got used to it. It’s a real shame, because the ingredients and presentation show promise, but the saltiness just overshadowed the experience.

Top restaurante in Vitoria! We had dinner and lunch here and what a fantastic experience. Super friendly staff and food cooked into perfection. Food quality vs price I can’t remember another restaurant close to this amazing level. Menu el dia for 21 euro with three lovely starters, fabulous Solomillo or fish/gambas skewer, dessert and a half bottle of Rioja. We can highly recommend the asparagus and the Pyrenean cow from the menu. You need to book or be there when they open. Muchas gracias Sukalki

Good food and good service. I had the rice with seafood - very nice - and one croqueta... 😋
Nick M.★★★★☆
We found this place looking for a restaurant for dinner (and not just pintxos) on a sunday night. Very good food and wine. We were 4 people, had a mix of croquettes, meat, a fish risotto, patatas bravas, 2 bottle of wines and some desserts. All in all for 130€. Great price/quality ratio and cute spot. Definitely would recommend!

Excellent food: I like the good balance between tradition and innovation. And the tastes were wonderful. The service was top: everybody always smiling and ready to help. I stayed 2 days in Vitoria, and it was so good the first evening that I didn't bother to look for another place where to have dinner the second day: I went again directly to the Sukalki, and I totally feel I did the best choice I could.

The service was excellent. The dishes tasted great: the Txangurro (crab) was presented in a casserole, and Manitas de Cerdo (pork trotters) were delicious but not all stuffed with foie gras and not that crispy.

El Portalón is the oldest restaurant in Vitoria-Gasteiz and definitely worth the visit. The interior oozes history. You'll feel transported back in time. The wine cellar is also truly gorgeous and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. We ordered some pintxos, which were very nice, combined with a good glass of wine. The service was efficient and friendly. The restaurant has a bar were you can enjoy some quick pintxos at the counter and a terrace where you can enjoy your food and drinks outside. A must visit when in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Beautiful place with spanish music. We have order grill for 2. The portions are large so we couldn't eat it all. Very tasty. Also orderes salad / the plate was extremly large

I really liked the medieval style of the restaurant, the staff was friendly but very slow. I ordered the octopus dish and it was good, nothing special though. As a main we opted for the turbot (rodaballo), and this is where things started going wrong. Firstly, the waiter was confused about the dish and wasn’t able to answer my questions. Personally, I believe that waiters should have a good understanding of the menu. I wanted to order the whole fish, I was told it would be a fillet which isn’t an issue. We receive our octopus, and a while after that one of the waiters informs me that in the end they’d be able to do the whole fish, meaning that all this time they haven’t even started with cooking the fish. We had to wait for AT LEAST an hour, waiters were very politely kept telling me that it’s a “complicated” dish and that there were some issues in the kitchen. Eventually after having already lost my appetite, we are given the fish. Was it horrible? No. But was it worth 80€ and an hour of my time? Absolutely not. Our lovely day trip in Vitoria unfortunately ended with us being annoyed and feeling robbed.
Riccardo Conci★★★★★
We had an amazing dinner during our stay in Vitoria. We got some hammon as starter and it was delicious. Later followed by two massive steaks with potatoes and peppers. The meat was cooked really well and the quality was honestly great. Desserts were good, not amazing but typical so just not really our taste. Only “bad thing” (our fault for not looking at the website) is the fact that if you want the full menu you have to book it at least two days in advance so just be prepared.

Great and quality food with sufficient options for any preference. The goat cheese salad with spinach qas excellent. Carpaccio is simply amazing.

Very nicely decorated place. The food was delicious and full of flavor. The young waiter, although he didn't know english, tried very hard and thank him for that. I wanted to drink a glass of wine but the taste didn't suit me. Even though they said that Sangria only comes in a bottle, they surprised me and brought me a glass of Sangria and thank him for that. The bread they put on the table - delicious. Recommendation! Greetings from Croatia!

The asparagus is the way different than you expected. It is not green it is not like stick. It is very shoft and it seems like a banana. But very delicious. But when we come to the meet things are changing. We ordered a T-Bone. It lools delicious as you can see but it was really cheawy. It was very hard to it. Disappoitment for the meat. Sorry !
Cola Blanca Arzate★★☆☆☆
Ordered a bottle of wine and water. They take the cap away for some reason. I would have taken the water with me but no cap. Good restaurant. Bad options.

One of the best eateries in Vitoria-Gasteiz, never disappoints. Great produce cooked and served to perfection. Try the chuleton or any of the fish dishes, home made deserts are to die for.

If you are in Vitoria and one to have a proper meal, El Clarete is your place. Their menu is very complete and well executed. Every dish was very tasty. Also, their wine cellar and knowledge is awesome. Number 1 in Vitoria.

Hidden gem! Amazing 5-course menu with local wines and food (price/quality 10/10). The waitress was super friendly and welcoming.

We have been a couple of times in this restaurant during a visit to Vitoria. The restaurant offers a tasting menu that can be adapted to client's needs. The bigger menu has 7 courses + 3 desserts (49.50 + VAT) and the smaller menu has 5 courses + 2 desserts (38.50 + VAT). All courses are in small plates and they are very elaborated and have excellent taste. Restaurant has an extensive wine menu. Service is correct, the owner is very friendly and will give any recommendations to make the lunch/dinner a great experience. Waiter just explain the content of each plate. Overall, without having the service and glamour of Michelin star restaurants, the food reaches this level, so visiting this restaurant is a must if you are and like fine dining and are in the city. We will be back when we have the chance.

I've visited this place several times for different reasons. When I wanted a delicious gourmet set menu on Weekends or a fantastic burger anyday, a cheap menu on Weekdays or drink at night. PROS: The atmosphere is great, extremely lively some nights and quiet many middays. The service is good, the food is tasty and you can use this place in different situations. CONS: Some tables are very close, making it difficult to have a private conversation, others are near the restrooms whilst more tables are in front of the exit. If you are a demanding person there are a few good tables. When there are many people the place could be too noisy and hot. OVERALL OPINION: Great place to meet friends any day of the week at anytime!
Eoin Ó Luasaigh★★★★★
Great place to eat and watch rugby. Great service from the bar staff. Stayed in the area for 3 days and it was one of my favourites. Michelle was working behind the bar and she was brilliant as was everyone else. Will definitely go back.

Fantastic menu selection of fish, meat and veggie options with great recommendations from the chef and nice regional wines. Highly recommended whether it’s a date or a group event but make sure you book in advance as it’s gets busy even on a Wednesday evening. Highly recommend the octopus, steak and fish of the day. The handmade croquet are some of the best I tried in Spain.

A very nice spot for a cosy meal and a drink before or after! The service was great and all the staff were very friendly. The food was delicious, the only comment I have is that there were very few vegetarian options and the portions were a little small. Definitely a place I will visit again.

This place is truly unique, with a long history and a perfect location in the Old Town. It gets very crowded during peak hours, so a reservation is necessary. The food is lovely; the daily menu is very diverse, allowing you to try local Basque cuisine. The staff is kind and helpful with any requests you may have, and the food is prepared quite quickly. Eating here feels like being in a Basque home. While there is plenty of space, it can be quite loud—but in a positive, lively way. This place is perfect for families and friends. The prices are fair, and the value for money is excellent.

We visited on Sunday for lunch (we were the family with two teenagers and all our suitcases in tow!). Our visit was completely impromptu after our train to San Sebastián was unexpectedly cancelled, and this restaurant came highly recommended by ChatGPT. What a fantastic find! The food was exceptional, and the service was warm, friendly and attentive from start to finish. The chicken tikka masala udon noodles were an absolute hit with everyone and has become one of the most talked-about meals of our trip through Spain! The set menu offered excellent value, and the staff were accommodating if one of our picky teenagers wanted a slight change to their meal. Thank you for making our unexpected stop in Vitoria-Gasteiz such a memorable one. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the city.

Food and service are absolutely amazing. Do not pass this place by if you are looking for a place to eat. We have eaten here twice and absolutely love the food and the prices. Authentic Basque dishes and ingredients that you can tell are fresh! Be careful with the bread because it is made fresh in house, and can be a meal on its own with some good olive oil!! The homemade bread is unbelievably good and might fill you up before the rest of the food comes! 😅🥴👍🏽

Excellent food and service here. The grilled squid dishes - both the version with onions and the risotto version - are super tasty and fresh. The artichoke starter was exceptional too.

We went for dinner and we were absolutely delighted. The food was spectacular and everything we tried was delicious. We ordered the Wagyu chocolates, four ham croquettes, some scallops, and a bao bun with shredded meat and a quail egg on top, which was very tasty. The portions are rather small, but we think that's a great way to order several things and try different flavors. As a main course to share, we ordered the grilled octopus, which was spectacular, both in terms of flavor and the quantity and quality of the meat. And to finish, we had a French toast for dessert, which was also amazing. In addition, the service was excellent. The waitress was very friendly and attentive to us at all times. A highly recommended place that we will definitely return to.

My wife and I went for dinner for the first time and we were delighted. We made the right choice with our food, and the waiters who served us were very friendly, which made the experience even better. The presentation of each dish was meticulous, with vibrant flavors and excellent ingredients. Without a doubt, 100% recommended and we will definitely be back.
Rebeca González Martínez★★★★☆
We ordered the set menu; the main course was leeks with mushrooms and their sauce, and for the second course, hake with mussels and its sauce. We also ordered baby broad beans and lamb trotters. The broad beans were delicious, but the lamb trotters were more like a stew of pig's trotters—not what we were expecting, especially since it was 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Even so, they were tasty. The desserts were delicious. A great place to eat during the week; we'll definitely be back!
Javier Ruiz★★★★★
We went for the first time and it was a very good experience. High-level restaurant atmosphere and service. It has an interior patio that fills the place with light. The cuisine is innovative, using seasonal products, with great emphasis on the presentation of the dishes. We had the opportunity to try the grilled scallops, which had a delicate, briny flavor. The grilled artichokes were perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The grilled sea bass fillets were rich and juicy. The Wayuu meatballs perfectly complemented the intense flavor of this type of meat, especially with the sauce. The French toast was incredible and presented in a novel way. Excellent value for money. We will be back.

We had dinner at La Roca and the experience was excellent. We tried several dishes to share (baos, tacos, meatballs, and dessert) and everything was well-prepared, with balanced flavors and beautiful presentation. The atmosphere is pleasant and the service is attentive and efficient. A highly recommended spot in Vitoria-Gasteiz for a relaxed and delicious dinner. We'll definitely be back.

This Basque restaurant, infused with Asian influences thanks to one of its Korean chef, offers a unique blend of traditional Basque flavors with an Asian twist. The interior combines the charm of a traditional Basque bar with the elegance of fine dining. The staff and chefs are friendly and attentive. During our visit, we unknowingly arrived during the Fiestas de La Blanca, so instead of the usual Menú del Día, we were offered the special Menú Zuria for 48.50 EUR per person. This six-course meal included dessert, bread, and water. The dishes were: Croqueta Takoyaki de Pulpo Gallego, Mejillones de Roca Escabechados, Pochas de Navarra con Gamba Alistada de Huelva, Setas a la Brasa, Merluza Ondarresa de Yuzu y Puerro Confitado, and Lomo Bajo Madurado a la Brasa con Salsa de Pimienta Verde. Each dish was flavorful and beautifully presented, with subtle Asian influences. My favorite was the "Setas a la Brasa", where raw egg yolks were combined with truffles and mushrooms, creating a rich, layered flavor. The final dessert, "Goxua Tropical", offered a refreshing mix of tropical flavors with passion fruit pops. This is a Repsol ☀️ recommended restaurant, and while the dishes were certainly well-executed, they didn’t completely surprise me—perhaps because I'm familiar with Asian flavors. That said, for a fine dining experience, the quality and portion sizes were great, and the service was attentive without being overly formal.

If there's one place to recommend in vitoria, it'd be without a doubt Kromatiko. Elegant restaurant with a superb level of service led by Zuriñe and Gorete who make you feel right at home while being super professional and informed about the plates. Chef Aitor's gastronomic creations are on another level. Flavour combinations that leaves you speechless, presentation that often results in plates that are even too pretty to eat, and execution on such a level that every dish is simply a masterpiece. Congratulations to the team for a one of a kind gastronomic offering that is surely to celebrate its Michelin stars very soon.

I had an amazing gastronomic experience at this restaurant. I was first invited to go there on my birthday, as a treat and, I had a blast! All the dishes were so tasteful, everything carefully made and I would repeat it without think twice. The staff was also incredible! 👏🏼 Kromatiko is definitely one of the best options for the locals or the visitors of Vitoria! It’s a must indeed!

Group of 4, seated near the station responsible for cooking steaks and turbot so we had a lovely view. Food was excellent, service was excellent, we had a flickering light and staff found an innovative solution.

The restaurant itself only opens at 20.30h, but we didn't mind, because we enjoyed a lovely glass of prosecco in the bar before the staff brought us to our table. The food was really high quality and beautifully presented. The food was clearly Basque cuisine, but with a modern twist. Every bit was a feast for the senses. Service was very friendly and professional. A culinary outstanding evening. Highly recommended.

Better to make reservation at advance if you want to have dinner, Not only drink at the bar. Not very wide menu, but excellent served & tasty food. Wine cart have a lot of local and overall Spanish wine by bottle, and not a lot but good by glasses ( recommend to take bottle). Cozy & calm place to have dinner. For me was best at the city.

We stoped here in our way to Portugal with a mission to have good tapas. We ordered 17 of them. All were excellent! The ingredients were fresh and full of flavor. Pintxo Jamon had amazing tomato base, more tasty than what we tried in bigger cities. The young staff was super friendly and helpful and they spoke good English. We highly recommend Tolono.
Emanuele Torres★★★★★
Very good food, lots of choices of typical pintxos and some particular plate from the kitchen. As most of the bar in this part of Spain there is no table service: you go to the counter and get what you want. the waiters are really cordial and they'll explain every pintxos so you can decide. The location is very centric and the interior design is modern and comfortable.

When you think about coming to Spain one of the first things that comes to mind is food and weather, but we mainly think about paella or Patatas Bravas, well let me tell you that they have more than that and one of the best places to come is Bar El Toloño in Vitoria Gasteiz. They know what exactly is the taste of The Basque Country, their food speaks for itself. They’re re not just a bar, they are Artists of the real and proper Basque food. Also they have been rewarded with the Michelin Stars 🌟

We chose a few different pinxos - ew! The one with anchovies was !?raw!? The white wine might well have been fizzy vinegar! We liked the pinxos with tomato… yum oh yea

Practical Tips for Dining in Vitoria-Gasteiz

Understanding a few local customs and practical considerations will significantly enhance your dining experience in the Basque capital. The city operates on a distinct schedule, and knowing how to navigate the culture of pintxos versus sit-down dining will save you both time and potential frustration. These tips are designed to help you eat better, spend smarter, and immerse yourself in the local food culture with confidence.

1. Master the Pintxo Bar Etiquette
In the Casco Viejo, the correct approach is to order one or two pintxos and a drink, eat them standing at the bar, pay, and then move to the next establishment. Do not try to reserve a table for a long meal during the evening pintxo rush. The bar is the stage, and the turnover is part of the culture.

2. Leverage the Menú del Día
If you want to experience fine dining on a budget, book your main meal at lunchtime. Many of the city’s best restaurants offer a menú del día that includes a starter, main course, dessert, bread, and a drink for a fraction of the à la carte dinner price. This is the best way to sample high-level cooking without the premium evening cost.

3. Respect the Kitchen Hours
Kitchens in Vitoria-Gasteiz typically close between 3:30 PM and 8:00 PM. If you are hungry during this window, your options are limited to cafés, bakeries, or pintxo bars that keep cold items on the counter. Plan your day around the Spanish meal schedule to avoid being stranded during the siesta.

4. Ask for Rioja Alavesa Wine
While Rioja is a broad region, the sub-region of Rioja Alavesa is just south of Vitoria-Gasteiz and produces some of the most elegant, mineral-driven wines in Spain. When ordering a red, ask specifically for a Rioja Alavesa or a wine from Laguardia or Elciego to taste the local terroir.

5. Look for Seasonal Specialties
The menu changes with the seasons in the best kitchens. In autumn, look for dishes featuring hongos (wild mushrooms) and setas. In winter, alubias de Álava (red beans) and stews dominate. In spring, fresh peas and artichokes are prized. Asking your server what is in season will always lead you to the best dish on the menu.

6. Book Ahead for the Ensanche
While the Old Town is designed for spontaneity, the more formal restaurants in the Ensanche often require reservations, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. A quick phone call or online booking a day or two in advance is usually sufficient and will save you from disappointment.

7. Do Not Skip the Postre
Basque desserts are often an afterthought for tourists focused on pintxos, but that is a mistake. Look for cuajada (a creamy, set yogurt-like dessert often served with honey), Goxua (a layered cream, sponge, and caramel dessert from Vitoria), or a simple plate of Idiazabal cheese with quince paste.

The beauty of dining in Vitoria-Gasteiz is that the city rewards curiosity. Walking into a bar with a crowded counter and pointing to a pintxo that looks intriguing is just as valid a strategy as booking a tasting menu weeks in advance. The density of quality within the city center means that a wrong turn rarely leads to a bad meal; at worst, it leads to a perfectly decent one. The standards here are simply too high for mediocrity to thrive.

Ultimately, eating in Vitoria-Gasteiz is an education in the Basque relationship with food: one of respect for the product, pride in the preparation, and joy in the sharing. Take your time, engage with the servers, ask questions about the ingredients, and allow the rhythm of the city to guide your appetite. You will leave not only well-fed but with a deeper understanding of why this green, understated capital is one of Spain’s great culinary secrets.
