Lyon wears its title as France’s gastronomic capital with a confidence that borders on the theatrical. While the bouchons and Michelin-starred tables often steal the international spotlight, the city’s true daily heartbeat can be found in its pizzerias.
The Lyon pizza scene is a fascinating dialogue between Italian tradition and French culinary rigor, producing slices that are crispy, chewy, and deeply flavorful. The demand for quality pizza in Lyon has exploded over the last decade.
Gone are the days when pizza was merely a late-night afterthought or a quick lunch for students. Today, Lyon boasts a dedicated culture of pizzaiolos who obsess over hydration levels, flour blends, and the provenance of their mozzarella.
Whether you are wandering through the historic traboules of Vieux Lyon or navigating the trendy streets of La Croix-Rousse, the smell of wood-fired ovens is never far away. The city offers a remarkable variety of styles, from strict Neapolitan purists to contemporary Roman-style al taglio joints. Finding the perfect slice here is less about chance and more about knowing where to look.
For locals and tourists alike, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. You might be looking for a romantic date night spot with natural wines, or perhaps a quick, affordable counter-service lunch near Place Bellecour. The best pizza spots in Lyon cater to all these scenarios with distinct personalities and specialties.
This guide is designed to cut through the noise and lead you directly to the dough that is worth your time and calories. We have evaluated these establishments based on the quality of their ingredients, the mastery of their baking techniques, the atmosphere, and their consistency. These are not just restaurants that happen to sell pizza; these are venues dedicated to the art of pizza making.
From imported San Marzano tomatoes to locally sourced charcuterie and cheeses, these addresses represent the pinnacle of Lyon’s pizza culture. Prepare to discover hidden gems tucked away on quiet corners and bustling institutions that require a reservation weeks in advance.

This is THE BEST Pizza of Lyon 🔮⚡👍🏽❤️🌸🌶️🔥🍕We keep coming back and each time the dough is perfect, the toppings are generous and the sauce has a depth of flavor that there is no comparison! Kind brothers with skills and joy that take pleasure preparing the pizzas. Bring cash so the proceedings go to them and not to the bank ! 🏵️💮

Pizzas are great. The toppings are really generous. You have the option to add spice to the pizza which tastes really good. They're two brothers and speak good English for the non-French speakers. Super affordable as well!!

Amazing work by the whole team! A cool escape from the hot weather. Great service and delicious food and cocktails 🍸 Shared a pizza and they pre cut it for us which was perfect 👌🏼

One of the best pizzas I’ve had. Chewy risen crust with nice wood fired char. Amazing meatballs and such great toppings for the pizza. It was super busy, and unfortunately we got three of our orders about 25 mins later than the others, but it was really delicious. The service is good otherwise friendly. Big place, but make reservations!

The pizzas were amazing! The ingredients were fresh, and the dough was perfectly prepared. The restaurant was easy to visit, with tables available and staff who were welcoming and accommodating for English speakers.
Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for delicious pizza and friendly service.

We went here twice. Once for ice cream which was lip smacking. Once for pizza, which was nice too. They do sell pizza by slice which really make this place affordable and waste free. We ordered 2 pizza which were decent in taste and size. Nothing unforgettable but good. What stood out was the incident where my husband handed out a 50 euros note but the cashier conveniently forgot to return the change. When my husband asked for it after some time, then another staff member came forward to the rescue of the cashier saying, "He often does that". Now this may be friendly and harmless but we couldn't stop thinking if that was deliberate.

I tried only the delicious handmade gelato with very fresh and authentic flavors. We took it to go and it was perfect for an evening walk in Lyon. Creamy, high quality, and not overly sweet. Definitely worth a stop 😊

Such a great walk-up pizza joint! We tried several different slices and couldn’t decide which one we liked best. The chili oil was the perfect touch. We even went back later the same day to try the sorbet, and it was just as delicious. If you’re looking for quick, affordable, and delicious food—look no further!

For a take away pizza it’s really good. The dough is crisp and the toppings all taste fresh. Being on the edge of Place de Terreaux means you can enjoy your pizza with a view of the fountain as well.

Really good overall. Well deserved high ratings. The food was excellent, and the restaurant looks great inside too. I’d say its more of a fun casual vibe place with great food and amazing decor.
The pasta stood out most, especially the ribbon style one, which is not something you get at many places. Everything we had was full of flavour, and the pasta dishes had a really nice aroma. Cocktails were amazing too. Love many of the interesting selections.
The beef was really well done, the fried potato on the side was spot on, and dessert finished things off nicely, especially the ice cream and apple crumble.
Recommended to book in advance.
Büşra Kaya★★★★☆
It was a lovely experience. My sister and I had dinner on the lower floor. The atmosphere on the ground floor and the lower floor is quite different, but I think both are nice in their own way🌸
The food was good—we had pasta and pizza, and both were enjoyable. For dessert, we ordered tiramisu, which was also very good. I had previously dined at this restaurant’s London branch, and the menu and flavors were very similar.
The only issue I had was that the service felt a bit slow. For example, when our dessert arrived, no dessert cutlery was brought to the table. We couldn’t mention it right away because we couldn’t see any waitstaff for quite a while. By the time the dessert spoons arrived, a significant amount of time had passed. I completely understand that dinner service can be busy, but having to wait that long before being able to eat our dessert didn’t feel quite right.
Other than that, we didn’t experience any problems and enjoyed our visit🥂
Winston Khoo★★★★★
An amazing restaurant deserving the high rating. Food & service are both excellent but what stands out as you move into the caverns of this place is that each dining room is decorated differently, like moving through a portal into different regions of a country. My two kids enjoyed not just the food but the whole experience including the special truffle pasta and the desserts.
Aras Arıkan★★★★★
This was one of the most interesting and unusual restaurants I've ever experienced. First of all, I have to say that you absolutely must make a reservation, otherwise you'll have to wait in long queues outside for minutes. By the way, making a reservation doesn't mean you'll sit there for a long time. Your reservation is actually for a 1-1.5 hour time slot, as that's what the restaurant expects. Now, let's talk about the atmosphere... I haven't seen such detailed and meticulously decorated decor in a long time. Everything is beautifully thought out; you constantly feel the need to look around while you eat. Besides the beautiful atmosphere, the food is equally delicious and presented wonderfully. I couldn't find a single negative thing about this place. If you come to Lyon, you absolutely must visit this place before you leave.
RR★★★★☆
The ambiance is superb, romantic and charming. The food was ok but nothing to write much about. Similar to its other restaurants in London, the focus in on ambience and experience. Pasta was very chewy but starters were refreshing. Pleasant experience for sure.

Everything was great. The food we ordered were delicious. The staff can speak good English and they were very nice as well. The food price were affordable and it comes in big servings especially the tiramisu. I will definitely come back!

Went there for a dinner randomly, signature dish was pizza. And the pizza is absolutely the same with those in Italy, authentic. So for me it’s fantastic! And i recommend both of the pizza the portion is huge and men can barely finish one whole pizza. For me it would be really nice if they got more windows open because for me personally it was a little bit hot while eating. But apart from that I love this restaurant and I am definitely going back again!

Definitely the best pizza in town. Jordan is a twice champion of France as a piazzolo. The pizzas are delicious. It's a thin pizza yet it doesn't falls apart. The ingredients are delicious. The season pizzas are incredible a must taste. Nice Italian wine selection I would suggest Sicilian Nero wine its just incredible. It's a warm place so beware on the summer. On winter make sure to be put inside. My suggestion is that you make a reservation. They have a terrace outside that gives to a sort of busy big avenue. It's not chic place but the food is awesome. Personnel is nice !

Pizza made to order with some good options for vegetarians and meat lovers. The service is a bit slow and the pizza sauce does need some more flavor to it. The crust is very good and certainly try the dessert options here.

The only good thing about this restaurant was that their pizzas were fine. When we ordered a pizza and a salad for 3 people, the business refused and said that everyone had to order at least one dish.
It was impossible to communicate with the staff in English. Also, their glasses were dirty. I would never recommend this rude business when there are many alternative places around!

My family had the most wonderful dinner here while visiting Lyon for the first time. The food was delicious, fresh, generously portioned, and the waitstaff was kind and patient. I don’t speak French very well, but that didn’t serve as a barrier for a wonderful evening. We ended up ordering a variety of dishes to share, but one pizza would have easily fed two people. We would come back in a heartbeat!

What a wonderful discovery! A,place with an atmosphere! Contemporary but laid back. Friendly and welcoming. Service very rapid and attentive. A special mention for Jerémie who looked after us and really contributed to our enjoyable evening!
Large menu with plenty choice. Very reasonable prices. Delicious food, generous portions, excellent pizzas.
Booking advised as they were very busy and people were waiting for tables.
Highly recommended!
Terrence Leeder★★★★☆
Very nice Italian restaurant. We made the mistake of ordering a pizza each, the pizza's are quite large, so one for 2 people works better, and leaves more room for dessert. Both of our pizzas were very nice. Well cooked, and very tasty. Dessert was also excellent, but we were very full after the pizza we decided to share.
The waitstaff were very nice and helpful, a very friendly atmosphere.
The restaurant is very popular, and the tables quite close together. That coupled with the heat from the pizza oven means the dining area gets quite warm, so dress accordingly. If the weather is nice, eating outside, while not having the ambiance of the main dining area, has a more reasonable temperature.
Prisacariu Raluca★★★★★
Absolutely amazing Italian restaurant!
From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome - extraordinary, friendly, and genuinely kind. The service was excellent, and the food arrived very quickly. Everything we ordered was out of this world and incredibly flavorful. We had the pizza calzone, pizza tartufo DOP, osso buco, and pasta carbonara - every single dish was outstanding. Authentic flavors, great atmosphere, and top-notch service. We will definitely be coming back and highly recommend this place to anyone who loves real Italian cuisine.

Wonderful find!
Authentic Italian spot with top‑notch ingredients, a creative menu, and super welcoming staff.
We tried the truffle and pistachio‑mortadella pizzas—both incredible with wood‑fired, homemade dough. The scaloppes were great too (the one with cheese and ham is a must).
Definitely worth a visit 🫶

Wonderful experience at Falcone. The staff was incredibly kind. I’m pregnant, and they carefully explained the menu and clearly guided me through what I could safely eat, which I really appreciated. The non-alcoholic spritz was excellent, and the food was absolutely delicious.

We came to Falcone for a hen party dinner, and from start to finish it was perfect! The owner, Charlie, couldn’t have done more for us – he’s so passionate about his food and wine, and it really shows in every detail. He made sure we were comfortable, happy, and having a great time throughout the evening.
Charlie went above and beyond to accommodate us, creating such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The highlight was when he even put on our favourite music through the speakers so we could enjoy a completely personalised experience – such a thoughtful touch!
The food was amazing, the wine was incredible, and every member of staff was friendly and lovely. I would recommend Falcone to absolutely anyone visiting Lyon – it’s a place where you feel truly looked after.

The food is truly incredible here. We had the truffle pizza (with a homemade truffle cream) the freshness of the truffles was outstanding. Definitely the best pizza in Lyon! We also had the pavlova for dessert, and it was refreshing, sweet and delicious with lots of fresh berries and a homemade coolis. The owner Charlie is very welcoming and gives great recommendations and is very passionate about the food they serve!

One of the best pizzas I have had I hope to try more in the future! Definitely get the anchovy, caper, and olive pizza. The service is incredibly kind and atmosphere is nice with tables in the shade. I would 100% recommend!
Corinna Ditscheid★★★★☆
I thought the pizza was lovely and altogether we had a very enjoyable evening here. One of us has celiac disease and was happy to have a gluten free pizza, which did not cause them any discomfort afterwards, so that's very good. I am torn about the location and service: staff was kind, but we felt a bit rushed. And the atmosphere was lively and fun, but the street feels a bit like a dark corner.
Bogdan Platon★★★☆☆
I’m honestly very disappointed with this place, especially considering how overrated it is.
The staff was unfriendly and unprofessional, which made the whole experience uncomfortable from the start. On top of that, the hygiene standards were far from acceptable — the glasses, cutlery, and dishes were visibly dirty.
After eating, I didn’t feel well at all and experienced uncomfortable bloating, which made me question the quality and freshness of the food.
What made things even worse was the environment outside the restaurant. There was a lot of garbage right in front, attracting birds that were feeding from it and even climbing onto the restaurant tables. It felt very unsanitary and unpleasant.
Overall, definitely not worth the rating or the hype. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Cozy nice Italian gem in the heart of Lyon.
Food is delicious and authentic, you feel like you’re in Italy.
It’s not our first time here, we always come back to try new items and honestly: they never disappoint!
Only downside i would say: not much space to move: tiny tables, small place and a lot of people - since it’s well know for its good food 😉

Good new pizza place. The pizzas are tasty, polite service and nice decor.
Only strange thing is that to go to bathroom you have to pass nearby kitchen? Apart from this all was very good.
Thank you also for being pet friendly and accepting our little dog.

The service was superb! The staff spoke Italian and French and could not have been more genuine people adding to the authenticity of the experience. We got a calzone and a pizza to share and both were delicious. The bottle of wine was off menu after some discussion about what makes a good wine. This is the second time I have visited Ti aMo Maria, but it won't be the last! -2018 Oct
Back again for another great experience. It was a quiet night after a long day and I was by myself. I entered Ti Amo Maria at 22:00 and the restaurant was still full and lively. The staff took care of me and gave me grace too drool over their menu. 😛 After a wonderful pizza and a glass of wine, I was refreshed and restored. -2019 Oct

I'm Italian and I live in Lyon since July 2016, Ti amo Maria is the only one real Italian restaurant in Lyon. The owner Andrea is very kind person, he cooks very well and here you can taste the best PIZZA with italian ingredient, it's take away too. The local is small, so I suggest you to book in advance for dinner. Enjoy your italian food.

Delicious doughy pizza. I also loved the sardine salad, which was light but tasty. The outside area is a little basic but it has a fun fußball table.

if i could give this place more than five stars, i absolutely would. the food is not only wonderful, the people there were accommodating and tried their best to speak english as we struggled to order in french. we went there three times during our two week stay, and the third time they gave us FREE TIRAMISU!! it was very kind of them to do that for us, especially on the last day of our trip :)))

By far the best and most authentic Neapolitan pizzas in Lyon. And friendly staff too!
To truly enjoy the pizza scene in Lyon like a local, it helps to understand the dining culture surrounding it. The French approach to eating out is often more structured than in other countries, and pizza is no exception. Knowing when to book, what to expect, and how to order will significantly enhance your experience.
Tips for Navigating Lyon’s Pizza Scene
Navigating the culinary landscape of a new city can be tricky, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. While the restaurants listed above will provide an incredible meal, these practical tips will help you avoid common tourist pitfalls and ensure you get a table at the hottest spots in town.
1). Reservations are non-negotiable for dinner
Unlike casual pizza spots in other countries, many of Lyon’s top pizzerias are intimate and highly sought after. Walking in at 8:00 PM on a Friday or Saturday will almost certainly result in disappointment. Always call ahead or book online a few days in advance.
2). Embrace the “Service Continu”
Lyon is a business hub, and many of the more modern pizza places offer service continu, meaning they serve food non-stop from noon until late evening. This is a lifesaver if you are jet-lagged or simply hungry at 4:00 PM when most traditional French kitchens are closed.
3). Understand the “Formule” (Set Menu)
At lunchtime, look for the formule midi. This is usually a fixed-price deal that includes a pizza, a drink, and sometimes a dessert or coffee. It is the most economical way to eat at high-end pizzerias without breaking the bank.
4). Don’t ask for Pineapple
While Lyon is open-minded regarding culinary fusion, traditional Italian pizzerias here pride themselves on authenticity. Asking for pineapple or heavy cream bases at a strict Neapolitan spot is likely to be met with a polite but firm refusal. Trust the menu.
5). Look for “Pizze Bianche”
While tomato sauce is classic, Lyon’s proximity to dairy regions like Savoie means the white pizzas (those without tomato sauce) are exceptional. They often feature crème fraîche, local cheeses like Reblochon or Saint-Marcellin, and smoked bacon. Don’t be afraid to skip the red sauce.
6). Check for Wood-Fired Ovens
If you are choosing between two unknown spots, peek inside. A visible wood-fired oven (often dome-shaped and tiled) is a strong indicator of a pizzaiolo who takes their craft seriously, as it requires more skill to manage than an electric deck oven.
The beauty of pizza in Lyon is that it perfectly mirrors the city itself: elegant yet unpretentious, deeply rooted in tradition yet open to innovation. It is a food that brings together students, families, and business executives under one roof, all united by the simple joy of charred crust and bubbling cheese.
As you explore the city, let your senses guide you. Follow the scent of burning wood and fresh basil down the narrow streets. Take your time, order a glass of Côtes du Rhône or an Italian natural wine, and remember that in Lyon, eating is never just about sustenance—it is a celebration of life. Whether you are grabbing a quick slice to go or settling in for a three-hour dinner, you are participating in a culinary tradition that spans borders and generations.
