Nantes is a city that moves to its own creative rhythm. Situated on the Loire River in western France, it has transformed from an industrial port into one of the country’s most innovative cultural hubs.
While many travelers come for the famous mechanical elephant or the historic castle, the city’s indoor treasures are equally compelling. The museums here are not just repositories of old objects; they are immersive, thought-provoking, and often surprisingly interactive.
From fine arts housed in a stunning palace to a workshop where giant machines come to life, there is a museum for every type of curiosity. The best part is that many of these cultural spaces are located within walking distance of each other in the compact city center.
Whether you are seeking shelter from a rainy Atlantic afternoon or simply want to dive deeper into the history of this rebellious city, you will find a rich offering. Nantes has a long history of maritime trade, industrial innovation, and artistic rebellion, all of which are reflected in its exhibits.
This guide curates the essential stops for your itinerary, ensuring you experience the depth and diversity of Nantes’ culture. Prepare to explore everything from ancient history to contemporary surrealism without ever leaving the city limits.

Seeing Abelard and Heloise felt like fever dream. I sat next to the painting for ages. Yet the whole museum is an experience worth your time. The art fulfills, and collection is very good. Atmosphere, tranquil and pleasant. But Abelard and Heloise... no comment, just emotions. Brilliant. Such passion.

A must-visit when visiting Nantes!! Very calm and friendly museum with loads of artwork to observe, on top of reasonable prices 🙂
Additionally, they even had free period products in their bathrooms and a ‘salle pour détendre’ (relax room)
All in all, my visit was a great experience and I’d recommend it to everyone!

Fantastic art gallery. Beautiful building. And a nice cafe. Large collection of art. We used our translation app as very little in English. Very accessible also.
Danielle Hodge★★★★★
Wonderful gallery with an impressive collection. Easy to progress through the halls and follow the theme of the pieces. Highly recommend for wide interest areas.

Spent almost 2 hours in the museum, and got to witness the "Sous la Pluie" exhibition. The building is huge. Staff was nice, but sadly no discount for students over 25 and outside Pays de Loire region. If you are under 25, you will have to pay 4 euros otherwise 9 euro ticket.
I am not an art person but man, you can really appreciate the creativity of the artists.
One thing that made me sad, was the 21st century art section in the "Cube". We have lost the creativity and you can see the artist no longer want to spend more time in creating art. The mordern art felt like, i was visiting a home depot, and have to select the color pattern and wallpaper for my walls and stuff.
But the art from middle ages till 20th century was splendid. Alot of photorealistic art made me stop and just stare in amazement and thinking is that women alive in the painting?
If you want to go back in time, visit the museum and see the art on exhibition.

A brilliant unique experience, mixing steam punk, the natural world, engineering and theatre. We visited the gallerie, the workshop and the carousel, watching the Grand Elephant from the ground and the balcony. Entry to the paid attractions isn't the cheapest but can see the scale of effort and creativity that goes into such large projects. Watching the elephant traverse the area would be a budget friendly option and still amazing.
The gallerie has a lovely flowing style where they "wake the creatures up" one by one in an ongoing loop allowing you to join and leave seamlessly. The presentations are in French although they do an English round on a Monday I believe. There is also a downloadable multilingual guide. Even if you are not fluent, it doesn't really detract from the theatre and spectacle however.
Silke De Rouck★★★★★
Fun experience. You get to be at the controls of some of these beautiful machines. They showcase how each one functions. The carroussel is lots of run for all ages as well! Highly recommend booking beforehand if you want to go on the elephant ride. Otherwise arriving at any time is fine. Included in the pass Nantes.

The Grand Elephant is the star of the show for me. Wandering around the park spraying kids with water....and that part is free!
We paid to visit the Carousel de Marins and the main gallery. Both very interesting.
Didn't get to the workshop.
You can easily spend a few hours here to see some unique creations.
Well worth it.
David Hunt★★★★★
Interesting, immersive. Well organised. We went from tour to tour, while the elephant ride is impressive it is even more so when seen from ground level. We spent about 3 hours here and were quite satisfied.
Pritesh Rana★★★★★
Great entertainment for kids on a hot sunny day. We didn't ride the Giant Elephant but instead walked along with it whilst it sprayed water at kids, adults and passerby's. Was very entertaining and refreshing on a hot sunny day. Highly recommend.
Best of all there is a little ice cream shop at the halfway point where you can stop for a break before continuing the return spray adventure. 🫶🏼
Would recommend checking timings for walk so you're not waiting around too long.

Initially as I was walking up to Chateau des ducs de Bretagne, it stroke my attention. I was very impressed with the magnitude of the castle. I thought it was extremely beautiful. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to explore the full depth of the castle or the museum on the inside, due to shortage in time. However, I definitely hope to come back to view the rest of the Chateau at some point in the future. It’s definitely worth the visit.
Charlotte Barrett★★★★★
This is a beautiful castle with lots to see in the museum (not everything has translations though so note that if you don't speak French you may miss out a bit). There are lovely interactive exhibits that the kids loved, even though they couldn't understand French. The staff were lovely and friendly, the chateau itself is beautiful and you could easily spend a whole day there. The grounds surrounding it are very pretty too. We really enjoyed it, and were pleasantly surprised that the kids were free, even our 12 year old. Well worth a visit.
Jed Morgan★★★★★
We visited the chateau as part of a short one day visit to Nantes. We didn’t book a tour but really enjoyed freely accessing the walk on the ramparts with great photo opportunities. The history of the chateau is very interesting too
David Hunt★★★★★
Loved that you can walk the walls and surrounding gardens. The museum inside the main chateau tells a good story of Nantes. The sections on colonialism, slavery and world war are well put together and thought provoking.

Beautiful historical site and a must-visit in Nantes. The château is impressive, full of history, and the atmosphere is amazing.
Even though it was raining when I went, it was still absolutely worth it. Walking around the castle walls and seeing the architecture in that weather made it even more memorable.
Highly recommended!

This museum, in the footsteps of Jules Verne's life, has a magnificent structure and is very rich in memories, including personal ones, of Verne. I really appreciated the vastness of this museum and the uniqueness of the objects found there, some of which are even interactive. Last but not least, congratulations on the video game idea and the uniqueness of the bookshop, but above all for being the only ones to provide us with information in Italian. I love the idea that the information sheet can also be used as a poster, I only realized it once I got home🤪
Sasha★★★★★
Much smaller than the one in Amiens, but still quite a lot of exhibits on his books. I liked that the location is well maintained. I visited the museum during the week, it was not very crowded and the entrance fee was 4€.
Danielle Hodge★★★★★
Wonderful museum to immerse yourself in the imaginative world of Jules Verne.
Luda Macejkova★★★☆☆
A small museum with replicas of the inventions of Jules Verne, display of his books, manuscripts, posters and games. You can learn a lot about his life and work.
The museum itself is not very attractive, just with a few artefacts but for real fans of Jules Verne it's the unique place.
A bit far away from the city center but with lovely views to Loire.

Impressive collection of art and artifacts. The ancient and medieval history of the region is most compelling. The stuff from Egypt etc is less interesting because it’s really just a bunch of rich people’s souvenirs.
Incredible that on the morning of our visit there was basically no one else there.
Beautiful buildings and setting. A must see in Nantes.
PmB★★★★★
Musée Dobrée is located in the heart of Nantes. It features from ancient artifacts to medieval treasures and objects from around the world. Housed in a mix of a neo-medieval mansion and a 15th-century manor, it feels more like exploring a collector’s secret palace than a traditional museum.
Stefanos Stoikos★★★★★
The musuem had fair aircon which helped during the heatwave. The buildings themselves are beautiful and the collections interesting and well curated without being overwhelming. The toilets were clean. The day we attended there was free entrance, so I can't commend on the price. There were rough sleepers outside the main entrance. Staff were polite and friendly. A good choice if you are in Nantes and good for children too.
Flavio Carlo Chimienti★★★★☆
A very elegant and well-stocked museum, it's a shame I was there near closing time. There are so many interesting objects. I would just like to recommend, if possible, better organization. Instead of having us leave all our belongings in one place, we were asked to leave disinfectants first, and then umbrellas and then again to put the backpack in front (by a guard who, moreover, did not understand English). The aforementioned guard also seemed annoyed that I didn't understand him. Too bad, the museum looks amazing. I have to say, though, that the girl at the front office was very nice.
Yulan Zhou★★★★★
I highly recommend this museum even if you stay in Nantes for only one day, especially for overseas travelers. The building itself is very beautiful with elegant wood panel decoration. There are numerous beautiful collections, most with English explanation or introduction of the historical background. Also the museum has put a lot of effort to multimedia education, which is intriguing and manages to hold attention of both kids and adults. Although the access of it is not included in the Nantes museum pass, it is well worth the visit.

Visited French destroyer since it was one of the activities included in nantes pass and seemed unique and interesting. Tours are only available in French, they do give you a booklet with all the information though. Walking through the narrow pathways of the ship, climbing up and down the stairs and learning about the history and operation of the destroyer was very informative. The mannequins are a bit creepy though. 😀

A thoroughly enjoyable tour of this old navy ship, hosted by an excellent guide. Quite a unique tour, very much keeping with the way life on shop would have been. We were there for over two hours but it didn't feel all that long. The tour was in French, although there was an English guide book if you don't speak the language. Definitely one to fit in if visiting Nantes
Ioana Nicolaescu★★★★★
The guided tour lasted over two hours and was conducted in French, but the guide also spoke English and was very kind in answering our questions. We were given a roughly 10page booklet that followed the entire tour. It was an incredible experience to learn about the history of the ship and how a destroyer operates. I didn’t feel claustrophobic, but visitors with mobility issues should note that it’s not fully accessible, especially if you want to visit the engine rooms, which require climbing down a very steep set of steps. Tip: turn around and descend facing the stairs for safety. The souvenir shop was charming, with reasonable prices. Be sure to check in advance how often tours run during the month of your visit. You are only able to visit along the tour. This attraction is also included in the Nantes Pass.
Sasha★★★★★
I would have really liked to have been able to visit the interior, unfortunately it was only possible with a guide and I had to book in advance.
Aidan Bermingham★★★★★
Visited utilizing the Nantes 48 hour pass.
Great tour. Lasted about 1:45 hours. Sarah seemed very passionate and knowledgeable, even though I couldn't really tell as I don't speak any French, all the French people on the tour seemed to be appreciating what they heard. They do have a book with photos and text in English for you to follow along with, unsure of other languages offered.
This ship itself is in great shape with lots of above and below deck areas for visiting. Very unique anti-submarine warfare focus for those interested in military history.
Of note if it wasn't clear above, they only offer guided tours which occur on the half hour and French is the only spoken language, not that that is an issue at all.

What better way to experience the historical account of the port city of Nantes in France than in the castle of the Duke! The whole place is a really nice place and museum. You can check the history of Nantes and its region. We loved. The another part of our visit was the exhibition abot Gengis Khan. The exhibition in general was magnificient and extraordinary. The only this we were dissapointed was rudeness of the securrity guard. My French is rather poor but I always in France try my best to talk in French. Sorry guys, check your staff! 2 stars because of them, nevertheless the museum is a gem.

We had a great visit. First of all, not closed on Tuesdays, unlike some of Nantes’ other museums. The exposition is big, interesting and definitely worth the 8 euros. It covers themes from the 18th century, to the two world wars and the industrial revolution of Nantes. Beware, most information is in French though. So an audio guide (2€) might be a good option if you don’t speak French.

Significant historical landmark located along the Loire River. It features a somber underground walkway that houses over two thousand glass inserts, each commemorating a slave-trading expedition that departed from the city's port. The space is designed to be reflective and minimalist, displaying poignant quotes about freedom and human rights from various historical figures. It serves as an important site for education and contemplation regarding the city's maritime past and the global struggle for liberty.

For in depth understanding of this there is recommendations to got to the musée d'histoire de Nantes, located in the Château des ducs de Bretagne.

Tips for Visiting Museums in Nantes
To make the most of your cultural itinerary, it helps to understand how the city structures its admissions and attractions. While Nantes is very welcoming to tourists, a little local knowledge goes a long way in saving money and avoiding long queues.
- Take Advantage of the Pass Nantes: If you plan to visit three or more attractions, purchase the Pass Nantes. It offers free access to many municipal museums, public transport, and major tourist sites for 24, 48, or 72 hours.
- Check for the First Sunday Freebie: Many of the city-run museums in Nantes offer free admission on the first Sunday of every month. This is a great way to save money, but expect larger crowds and arrive early.
- Be Aware of French Closing Days: Most museums in Nantes are closed on Tuesdays or Mondays. Always check the official website of the specific museum before planning your day to avoid disappointment.
- Book the Machines in Advance: For the Machines de l’Île (which houses the gallery and workshops), it is highly recommended to book timed tickets online, especially during school holidays and summer weekends.
- Look for Combined Tickets: If you are visiting the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, check if there is a combined ticket option for the museum and the ramparts walk. It is usually the best value for the full experience.
Nantes rewards the curious traveler. Because the city is relatively flat and has an excellent tram system, you can easily hop between the historic museums in the center and the industrial art spaces on the island.
By mixing the classic fine arts with the city’s unique mechanical creations, you will gain a true understanding of why Nantes is considered one of the most livable and creative cities in Europe. Enjoy the journey through its layered and fascinating history.
