15 Best Parks and Walking Routes in Pamplona

Pamplona is a city that rewards those who step outside its historic core. While the cobbled streets of the Old Town and the shadow of the bullring capture most of the attention, the surrounding landscape offers a green belt of tranquility that locals cherish. From the remnants of ancient fortifications to the quiet bends of the Arga River, the city is crisscrossed with paths designed for walking, jogging, and cycling.

The geography of Pamplona is defined by its terraces and river valleys, creating a surprisingly varied terrain for a city of its size. You do not need to travel far to find dense woodland, open meadows, and panoramic viewpoints. Whether you are looking for a ten-minute stroll to clear your head or a two-hour loop to tire out the dog, the options are extensive and well-maintained.

For visitors, exploring these parks offers a chance to see a different side of the capital of Navarra. It is an opportunity to trade the buzz of pintxo bars for the rustle of leaves and the sound of water. For residents, these routes are the backdrop to daily life, serving as outdoor gyms, social hubs, and quiet escapes from the urban rhythm.

The city council has invested heavily in pedestrian infrastructure, ensuring that these green spaces are connected and accessible. You will find drinking fountains, shaded benches, and clear signage along most of the major routes. The terrain is generally gentle, making these walks suitable for families, older adults, and casual strollers, though a few paths offer steeper climbs for those wanting a workout.

Seasonality plays a significant role in how you experience these spaces. Spring brings vibrant wildflowers and rushing water, while autumn turns the dense forests into a mosaic of reds and golds. Even in winter, the paths remain passable and often bathed in the crisp, clear light of northern Spain. Summer walks are best reserved for the early morning or late evening when the heat subsides.

This guide focuses on the practical details: where to start, what to expect, and why each route matters. It is built on the understanding that a great park is more than just grass and trees—it is a place with a distinct character, a history, and a specific purpose for the community.

Whether you are training for a race, pushing a stroller, or simply seeking a moment of peace, the following list provides a comprehensive overview of the best green spaces and walking routes this city has to offer.

I am worried about the animal welfare here. Why are these animals, birds, pigeons and chickens in these huge big tents? There is a opening in one corner, but you can see the pigeons flying around stressed and they cannot find the exit. Also the roasters are fighting with each other, and like someone else wrote there seem to be not enough hens for the roasters, so they start to fight… Also people are feeding bread to the birds and that is very unhealthy for birds! They get sick from bread. If you want to feed them, only feed bird food (like seeds)

This is the most beautiful park. It has formal gardens beds laid out in the French romantic style. The old wall and moat is incorporated in the design. There are thousands of trees including very old sequoias and cedars. We were traveling in September and the flower plantings were beautiful.
Kirsty McWilliam★★★★★
Just a lovely space to wander and have a snack and drink. So peaceful.
Xabier Granja Ibarreche★★★★★
What a wonderful park, it's already beautiful right now in the dead of winter, I can't imagine how nice it must be to walk around in the spring and summer! Lots of green, beautiful trees, chickens and roosters in the protected area, a bunch of deer roaming around, and I even saw two peacocks! It was an especially nice walk during the sunset. Absolutely recommended you stop by this park.
Seokjin Ham★★★★★
One of the oldest gardens in the city, it is a French-style garden designed in 1830. The area, once home to the Taconera Fortress built in the 17th century to reinforce the western side of the Pamplona citadel, has since been transformed into a walkway. Walking through the park offers panoramic views of the Río Arga and the city of Pamplona. While typically a peaceful and tranquil space to enjoy nature, it can transform into a lively atmosphere during festival periods.

A decent park with lots of trees and a pond. It was worth a visit without making too much effort. Personally, I wouldn’t get out of my way to visit it again. Finding parking required some patience, but it might have been because it was a school run time. In the absence of cash, I downloaded an app to pay. The app was straightforward to use. Probably best to park the car just outside the park to the south side. A playground just outside and close to lots of restaurants.
Dmytro Serzhantov★★★★☆
Nice place when it’s not so hot outside. Otherwise you’ll be burned. There is no a lot shade here. But you can see two ponds with ducks. I’m not sure if you should visit it as a tourist unless you are a stay nearby.

The park are nice and beautiful. There are a beautiful fountain that you cane seen along differently places around the pond. There are also a little waterfall, that is so cute. When you came to sit on the couch, you must first to see where you are going to sit because on the couchs are tirdy on the side where are standing an arbor. In the park you didn't have a lot of noise, that is nice because you cane enjoined the place.

Pamplona's park, located next to the Txantrea and San Pedro neighborhoods, is excellent for strolling and escaping the city. The park is home to the city's only traditional granary (hórreo). The park's fountains are closed, and the lighting at night is very poor, with hardly any light.
Francisco Javier Redin Fernández★★★★★
A very nice and peaceful park for walking dogs, or even just one person—highly recommended. I usually go in the afternoons, and sometimes you might find a group of people, but most are just strolling peacefully. Occasionally, you might see a dog off-leash, but its owner is always nearby to keep an eye on it, so if you're coming with small children, don't worry.
Cívicos★★★★★
Fantastic for a stroll. It would be great if the two fountains had water and the lighting wasn't so scarce.

A beautiful and very peaceful green space, ideal for strolling and unwinding while enjoying nature by the river. It's clearly well-maintained and a wonderful haven of tranquility to visit with the family.

What can I say?... A birch forest amidst the buildings. A dream city with a playground to boot.
Antonio★★★★☆
A stunning garden transformed into a small birch forest. The word birch has a Celtic origin, *betu*, which was the name this people gave to this species. It is a boreal species, very common in the Eurasian taiga where it forms extensive pure stands. In Spain, it is generally found in groves or thickets in the mountains where it colonizes areas abruptly opened by avalanches or logging, as well as areas with unstable substrates such as scree slopes, ravines, etc.

Ciudadela de Pamplona is very nice. Everyone should decide for hem/herself whether 1 or 2 visits (or more) should do. We visited the Ciudadela de Pamplona on labourday. Shops closed so "we had to go for the tapas". Not a punishment!
Simon★★★★★
Beautiful space for a walk and surprisingly big as well. A definite hot-spot for dog walkers so watch where you're stepping on the grass. One area has chickens and different birds, They have birds as well if you can spot them. A great place to while away the afternoon or walk of some of the excellent local food.
P F★★★☆☆
Not much left to look at, but worth a visit. Go past the monument and walk around what's left of some of the old city walls and get some fantastic views.
Amanda Stephenson★★★★★
Enjoyed looking around this city. Ate at some great bars and enjoyed the pintxos. Be aware that shops will shut for a long lunch and everything quietens down. The citadel is worth a look as a lovely quiet place with lots of shade. Art exhibitions are there too - shut for lunch though!

Enjoy the views over the Pamplona basin from this beautiful viewpoint. Easily accessible from the Taconera Gardens, it offers plenty of shade, several fountains, and benches for sitting. Take the opportunity to explore the surrounding area and the rest of the park.
Félix PJ★★★★★
The park's viewpoint offers breathtaking views of the city. Watching the sunset here is a true privilege. Without a doubt, for me, it was the best viewpoint in Pamplona. You can stroll around or sit on one of the benches to admire the views. These benches are shaded from the sun and in a breezy spot. I was blown away. I also recommend taking a walk through the park and visiting the deer enclosure.

The Parque de la Runa is a beautiful and charming green space that runs alongside the Arga River and the Rochapea neighborhood. It's a lovely place for a stroll, to enjoy the surroundings, and to unwind without leaving the city. However, it's worth noting that it hosts many activities and events throughout the year, such as the fairground attractions during San Fermín or culinary offerings like the Champions Burger. A beautiful park, which they have destroyed in the name of "progress," a great shame
JUAN MANUEL MARTÍN DOMÍNGUEZ★★★★★
A space for pedestrians and a thoroughfare to access Pamplona's old town. A newly created area with benches, pedestrian paths, and cycle paths. Ideal for short, leisurely strolls. Just 10 minutes from the city's old town. A longitudinal route through the Txantrea neighborhood towards Pamplona or Burlada.
Rosa Serrano olivan★★☆☆☆
They've ruined Irubide Park. Too much concrete. It used to be a green space. The Josefinas area is now overgrown with weeds. The waterwheel is buried under concrete. You can only see the footprints of the installers behind the glass. So much construction to create paths that are too wide, designed so that all of Pamplona can go for a walk at the same time and in the same place, at the expense of trees and meadows. A shame.
رشيد حوسين★★★★☆
A beautiful and peaceful place, especially in spring when the trees are in bloom. It's well worth a visit, and its inhabitants are truly wonderful.
Edurne Aragón★★☆☆☆
Located in the Txantrea neighborhood, Irubide Park, along with El Mundo Park, was once an iconic landmark of Pamplona-Iruña. Now it's "just another park." A road bisects it; where there was once life, now there's hardly any. Cherry trees once adorned the path; now there's nothing.

This trail is one of those simple yet very special plans to enjoy with the family near Pamplona. It's a very pleasant walk through Mount Ezkaba, surrounded by nature and with a route full of wooden sculptures that make the walk much more entertaining, especially for the little ones. It's an easy route, perfect for going with children, as they can explore, discovering figures, plants, and the surroundings without it becoming tedious. It also encourages contact with nature in a very enjoyable way. There's also a park with a playground and a bike path nearby, which completes the outing. One minor drawback is that the signage at some intersections could be improved. Even so, it's a highly recommended walk to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors.
Ion Andoni Garcia★★★★★
A highly recommended place to visit with young children. They'll be entertained looking for sizes, and it's easy for them. Only 2.5 km away. Easy parking.
Imanol Ballano★★★★★
This is a hike in the mountains for children, an enriching experience that combines fun and learning. Surrounded by nature, little ones can explore their surroundings, discover plants and animals, and enjoy the fresh air. The walk, adapted to their pace, fosters a love for the environment and exercise, while sparking their curiosity about the natural world. Ideal for families, it offers moments of adventure and tranquility in a safe and healthy environment.
Edu San Sebastian Fotógrafo★★★★★
(HAZITXO TRAIL) A magnificent walk surrounded by wooden sculptures. Very nice for families and highly recommended. Next to it is a park with plenty of play equipment and a bike jump track.
Pau★★★★★
A pleasant area for walks on the outskirts of Pamplona. Suitable for children. Ideal for enjoying nature without having to take a long car journey.

Tips for Enjoying Pamplona’s Parks and Walking Routes

To make the most of your time outdoors in Pamplona, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The city’s parks are generally safe and well-equipped, but timing, footwear, and etiquette can significantly impact your experience. Below are some practical recommendations to help you navigate the green spaces like a local rather than a tourist.

Start early or go late in summer. Pamplona can get quite hot between June and September, and many of the riverside paths lack continuous shade during the midday hours. Aim to walk before 10:00 AM or after 7:00 PM to avoid the strongest sun and the busiest foot traffic.

Wear shoes that can handle mixed terrain. While many of the main promenades are paved, the best riverside and woodland trails often feature compacted dirt, gravel, or exposed tree roots. A pair of sturdy trainers or light hiking shoes will keep you comfortable on both surfaces.

Bring a reusable water bottle. Public drinking fountains are common in the larger parks like Yamaguchi and the Taconera, but they are less frequent once you venture onto the outer loops along the river. Carrying water is essential, especially if you are walking with children or pets.

Respect the cycling lanes. Many of the river routes are shared between pedestrians and cyclists, particularly the stretches that connect to the wider Navarra greenway network. Stay to the right side of the path, keep dogs on a short lead when cyclists are passing, and avoid walking in designated bike lanes.

Explore beyond the walls. Visitors often limit themselves to the parks immediately adjacent to the Old Town. While the Taconera and the Citadel are beautiful, the true wilderness feel is found further along the Arga River, where the city noise fades and the path is framed by dense poplar and willow trees.

Check the season for park events. Several of these green spaces host cultural events, markets, and festivals throughout the year. The Citadel’s moat, for example, occasionally becomes a venue for open-air concerts. A quick check of the local agenda can turn a simple walk into a memorable experience.

Pamplona’s parks are not merely ornamental; they are the connective tissue of the city, linking historic districts with modern neighborhoods and urban life with the natural world. The routes described here offer a chance to slow down and appreciate the rhythm of the river, the shade of ancient trees, and the careful design that has preserved these spaces for generations.

Whether you spend an hour wandering through the sculpted gardens of the Taconera or an entire afternoon tracing the Arga’s meanders, you will leave with a deeper understanding of why Pamplona is considered one of the greenest cities in Spain. The city’s walkability is its greatest asset, and these parks are the proof.
