Marseille’s culinary identity is often defined by its sun-drenched Mediterranean coastline, bustling Vieux-Port, and the unmistakable aroma of bouillabaisse. Yet beyond the iconic seafood shacks and North African couscous eateries lies a vibrant, deeply rooted Italian food scene.
Thanks to a significant Italian diaspora and a shared cultural appreciation for slow dining, the Phocaean City has become a hidden gem for lovers of authentic pasta, wood-fired pizza, and delicate antipasti. Navigating the dining landscape here can be overwhelming, especially in tourist-heavy districts where quality can vary dramatically.
To truly eat well, you need to know where the locals go for their Sunday family lunches or where the city’s foodies flock for a perfectly charred Neapolitan crust. This guide cuts through the noise, focusing on establishments that prioritize ingredient sourcing, traditional techniques, and genuine hospitality.
From the rustic trattorias of the Panier district to sleek, modern osterias near the Corniche, the options are surprisingly diverse. Whether you are seeking a romantic date spot with sea views, a lively venue for a group celebration, or a quiet corner for a solo plate of handmade tagliatelle, Marseille has an Italian table for you. We have evaluated these spots based on pasta texture, sauce balance, wine lists, and overall atmosphere.
In curating this selection, we considered not just the food on the plate but the story behind it. Many of these chefs import specific flours from Italy, cure their own meats, or have family recipes passed down through generations. This dedication to authenticity is what separates a mediocre tourist trap from a memorable dining experience in France’s oldest city.
Below is our curated list of the absolute best Italian restaurants in Marseille, designed to help you eat like a local. Each entry has been selected for its consistency, service, and ability to transport your taste buds directly to Italy without leaving the Bouches-du-Rhône.

A truly SPLENDID experience! ✨
Just like its name says: Splendid! The food was a 10/10 🤤, but what truly made our visit special was the amazing team.
From the moment you arrive, the lovely receptionist welcomes you warmly and escorts you to your table. Our waiter, Francesco, was absolutely wonderful—attentive, friendly, helpful, and so accommodating when communicating in another language. ❤️
We also met the bartender, who came directly to our table to bring us our drinks. He told us he is from Equatorial Guinea, which is why he speaks Spanish. Everyone was incredibly kind and welcoming! 🥰
The atmosphere is already beautiful thanks to the stunning design, but the wonderful staff makes it even more special.
Without a doubt, our favorite restaurant in Marseille 🇫🇷❤️. Would we come back? Absolutely! We’d return every time we visit Marseille. ✨

Although the average of the rated metrics is below 3, I rounded my rating up to 3 solely because of our server, Max, whose outstanding hospitality and constant smile stood out despite the apparent team issues around him.
First of all, the rude attitude of the greeter overseeing the seating was unacceptable. Shouting at guests and calling them to follow from halfway across the room? Why not guide guests properly and handle the situation professionally?
Secondly, the décor was excessively overdone — especially the plastic flowers covering the ceiling. But why? The extravagant decoration seemed to overshadow the kitchen’s work and the presentation of the dishes. Perhaps intentionally so, to distract from the mediocre food. Yes, the ingredients were fresh, and the flavors showed some balance and contrast, but with such a limited menu, I expected every plate to offer something memorable. Instead, it was a complete disappointment.
Last but not least, serving both the entrée and the main course with the same cutlery — and asking guests to keep it while clearing the plates — felt completely inconsistent with the restaurant’s exaggerated attempt at sophistication. It reflected poor table etiquette and lack of attention to detail.
I agree with the other reviews there is nothing particularly impressive about the food. However, if you are simply looking for an Instagrammable place, then it may still be worth a visit.
Finally, despite specifically ticking the box requesting a management response in the survey they asked us to complete, there has been absolutely no follow-up or acknowledgment.

The experience, the decor, the staff, the food, everything about Splendido was amazing! Highly recommend if you're in the area.
The only little caveat is that my wife and I are a bit sensitive to Air Conditioning and their tables for 2 all have A/C blowing over them.
That said, the staff graciously moved us outside and everythig went smoothly from the service transition to the food and the care.
Thank you to everyone that accommodated and served us!

We visited this Italian restaurant and both the bar and the décor were amazing. I especially loved the bathroom design. We started with Caesar salad and arancini, which were very tasty. The portions were quite large. We had pizza and risotto, and both were truly excellent. For dessert, we had tiramisu, which was perfect. The service and staff were very friendly and welcoming. We were very satisfied overall and would definitely recommend this Italian restaurant in Marseille.
Nadiia Rudenko★★★★☆
Great spot if you’re coming for pizza and cocktails — that’s definitely what this place does best.
The pizza was genuinely delicious: flavorful, well-made, and definitely worth ordering. I also really enjoyed the truffle rice balls — such a tasty starter and one of the highlights of the meal.
The risotto, however, was a bit disappointing. It was seafood risotto, but there was very little fish in it, and it felt like there was far too much rice compared to the actual seafood. The pasta was also just average and didn’t stand out.
So my honest recommendation: come here for the pizza, cocktails, and appetizers — they’re great. But if you’re specifically craving pasta or seafood risotto, this probably wouldn’t be my first choice.

When we arrived they didn't have any free tables, but the staff called after us and found an extra table somewhere to put on the terrace for us. Lucky for us because the food was absolutely amazing! The staff is also very friendly, we had a great evening here.

Linguine with garlic and olive oil was amazing. Server was very sweet and kind. Super accommodating. I also had a very tasty apple with chocolate sauce dish for dessert

How does this place get a 4.9? Google reviews are completely unreliable. We had high hopes for this restaurant and want to really like it. The Carpaccio de Tomate et Burrata appetizer was really good but things went down from there.
For the main courses we ordered the following: Pasta aux Boulettes de Mamie Eliane (pasta with meatballs), Scaloppa Alla Milanese Di Luigi (pasta with veal cutlet), Lasagna, Special of the day Linguini with some type of italian ham on a mushroom cream sauce. The lasagna was cold so we sent it back to be reheated. All the other pastas were not cooked enough, you can still taste the flour in the pasta, and they were lukewarm at best. The red sauces on the pasta and lasagna tasted like if you just open a bottle of spaghetti sauce and used it. The cream sauce was completely lacking in flavor and there simply weren't enough sauce to coat the pasta.
Just like other reviewers mentioned, they pre-made all the dishes and then put them together, that's why dishes are not hot, not enough sauces etc.
The dish pictures look good, but tastewise, it's not good at all. Sorry to give a not so good review to this restaurant, diners deserve to know and to be honest, this place is a 2 or 3 out of 5. Service is good enough and I hope they will do better in the future.

Sparacello delivers excellent Italian cuisine with impressively quick service and a genuinely friendly team.
The chef (owner I presume 🙂) personally visits each table to gather feedback, showing real care for the guest experience, and with whom with had a nice chat at the end. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, it’s a comfortable spot for any time.
Mocktails are refreshing, the food though is the real star for sure!

Absolutely delicious food!! We arrived an hour after they opened in the evening and had no problem getting a table. Best tiramisu we’ve ever had- was finished before we could snag a picture.

We had a really lovely experience here. Unlike some other reviews mentioned, we didn’t find the staff unfriendly at all. Our waiter was incredibly kind. The food was also delicious. I especially loved the octopus salad, it was definitely my highlight. My pasta with prawns was very tasty as well, although the pasta was a little overcooked. Apart from that, everything was really good. The atmosphere was super cute, definitely reserve beforehand.

A wonderful Italian dining experience from start to finish. The waiter was incredibly kind, attentive, and friendly, and he took the time to explain everything to us, which made the experience feel very warm and welcoming.
We ordered the Parma ham and burrata, the Parmesan Vesuvio, and the pasta of the moment with calamari. The calamari pasta was absolutely exceptional perfectly cooked, flavorful, and easily the highlight of the meal. The Parmesan Vesuvio was also very good, although I felt it could have used just a little more saltiness to fully balance the flavors.
The terrace is also very cozy and makes the whole atmosphere even more enjoyable. Overall, a great experience that I would gladly recommend.

You HAVE to eat at La Cantinetta!!
The ambience was incredible. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. When it got colder, they even had blankets, so it got even more cozy!
We had Scallopine sauce cantinella and Vesuvio creme el parmesan. It was both beyond delicious. For desert we had tiramisu, wich was perfect at the end.
The whole experience was so nice, that we came back the next evening!!
Thanks to all the people working there. Keep going, you’re all amazing!

La Casa di Mario is a small true Italian restaurant and pizzeria in the Vieux Port area, just behind the Opéra de Marseille.
They can proudly display the “50 Top Pizza” badge, a guide to the best Neapolitan pizzerias in the World.
That’s the reason why I went there.
And, since their pizza is actually excellent, I visited them twice during my “marseillais stay”
Delicious food. Great service. Fair prices.
Highly recommended.
For the record, the same owners have also another restaurant in the same neighborhood, Le Tribeca de Mario.

The pasta was nice enough, but the tiramisu was the worst I've ever tried. It wasn't like a real tiramisu and was full of whipped cream, probably no mascarpone. At one point, I thought to send it back, but didn't want to bother the staff because they were so young and nice. Try the other dessert.

Best Italian in Marseille!
We loved Trattoria Partenope!
The food was absolutely delicious and so authentic - it felt like we were in Naples. Big portions, fresh ingredients and great value.
The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming to our family.
Lively atmosphere right in the Old Port.
Highly recommend if you want real Italian food. We will definitely come back!

No loud music maybe we came earlier. We ordered escalope, Milanese , they are excellent 👌.service is good. Next time I want to try their pizza. I ate too much authentic Naples pizza in France already but still want because I can't have authentic pizza back in the US.

Best Pizzaplace in Marseille!
The food was amazing. The fish in the pasta tasted lovely and fresh. The pizza was perfectly baked and the taste was very good.
The service was good and the server were really friendly and nice.
I can definitly recommend this place for good italian cuisine!
Dan Nita★★★★★
The craziest (in a good way) restaurant I’ve been to so far! And some of the best Italian food I’ve ever tasted!
At first, we got a margherita pizza and a tartufo. Both were excellent, just how they should be made. But seeing how amazing the dishes at other tables looked and how good they smelled as they passed by, we decided to come back for another round. So, we returned a few days later! This time, we started with some arancini that were even better than the ones I had in Palermo! Then came the 'Milanese,' an incredible chicken escalope, served with some very tasty and fragrant pasta, plus the Vesuvio pasta with burrata that still makes my mouth water when I think about it! The surprise at the end was the very reasonable bill we paid.
Walking into this place feels like being teleported from Marseille straight to Naples! You get the exact vibe of the famous Italian city, not just in the way the restaurant is decorated but also in the warm and lively way the staff and regulars interact. If you’re looking for somewhere quiet, this might not be the place for you. But if you’re after a lively, authentic atmosphere and a night to remember, this trattoria is definitely the answer!
I think their motto should be 'we'll make it work!' because they truly had a solution for every situation, even if it was a bit unexpected. Let me explain briefly: we first showed up on a very busy Sunday evening, and at first glance, there were no tables available. But they made it happen, and like magic, spots opened up. I won’t spoil the surprise of how the menu is presented, but it’s funny, you’ll see! When we came back a few days later, they had run out of the amazing ice cream served in a lemon or orange. No problem—they made it work and served it in a glass, swapping the lemon with limoncello on the spot. It turned out to be fantastic!
Definitely recommended and worth five stars, with just one note: the second time we went when it was less crowded, the music was a bit loud.
Malgosia Remi★★★★★
If I could, I would give trattoria 6 starts. What an authentic delicious Italian experience I had with my daughter on the last evening of our French holidays. Both the food, service, venue, atmosphere are unforgettable. What a gem!!!!

It is written happy hours for cocktails but when we ordered a cocktail during the happy hours, the waiter said the cocktails are not in the happy hours.
I ordered the tripleta, it was good and tasty, my wife ordered the truffle one but she was very disappointed because she did not feel the truffle taste at all, it was more a cheese pizza than truffle pizza lol.
Plus the service was not extraordinary.
The location is central so it is a good thing.
Once again no hard feeling here, we are just telling our experience the day we were, not telling it is always like that.

We ordered two dishes: the tagliatelle with truffle and the swordfish. Unfortunately, the pasta had very little flavor, we mainly tasted mushrooms and cream, I doubt if there was any fresh truffle in the pasta.
The swordfish was completely raw and was served on top of a mountain of lettuce. After we asked for the fish to be cooked further, it was still too raw. We looked up if it is common to prepare swordfish this way and found that eating raw swordfish is absolutely not recommended.
On a positive note, the fish dish was eventually removed from the bill, which we appreciate. However, despite this gesture, we unfortunately cannot recommend this restaurant.

Nice spot and the people are very friendly. The pizza here is especially good and I’ve ordered it to go numerous times. Superb authentic Italian restaurant. I am a big pizza lover and i have visited some famous pizzerias around the globe, like in Italy, Paris, Singapore. I can say that I really loved the taste of pizza's here and quality of products used are good too. They have special pizza's with Zucchini base instead of tomato or white cream base. If you visit here then do give it a try.
Also, probably this is the first Italian restaurant i have visited, where they put fresh basils directly plucked from the plants inside the shop. Importantly, all the people working here were very polite and kind. Thanks for a good service.

This place deserves 6 stars. The service is kind, everyone very sympatic, even the cooks, but the waitress is the best. It has a nice, clean and confortable little place for eating there, well decorated, where locals eat. But the best off all is the food. We fell in love with it. Sadly we had to return from our vacations in Marseille, now my little son keeps asking if they can send us food by plane 😂
So, if you are traveling, passing by, on vacation, or even have the luck to live there, please visit in our behalf.

We discovered Inizio while traveling through Marseille, and it was a wonderful find. The owner, Michelangelo, was incredibly welcoming and kind — the kind of hospitality that makes a meal memorable.
The food was outstanding. The margherita pizza was simple and perfectly executed, the calzone was hearty and delicious, and everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared.
If you’re in Marseille looking for genuine Italian food and warm, genuine hospitality, Inizio is a must-visit. Michelangelo’s care for his customers really shines through. We’d absolutely return if we’re ever back in the area.

Tasty, super fast service, prices higher than other places around. But quality is better than average. We really enjoyed. Cocktails good.

Inizio is a new restaurant offering a strong choice of Italian dishes artfully and tastefully executed by an Italian chef. Our table of six chose a massive plate of charcuterie as a starter and each a different main dish and dessert and were able to share and ended up fulled up to the rim. Just check the salivating menu and you will understand. We felt we were in a private kitchen and were ravished. Our taste buds were on high and the evening rendered magic. We were told the menu changes and I wish I could go back each time to appreciate again the tastefulness and visual artistry of the dishes. The decor is a clever mix of industrial, cosy features and furniture, the music mostly lounge remastered French tunes old school or modern non intrusive and atmospheric. Based in the well heeled neighbourhood of La Corniche,15 minutes ride away from the Vieux Port, the spacious restaurant exuded central trendy vibes and only a few meters away from the sea. We ended up having drinks in the bar area. The prices are medium range and the clientele is coming from a broad spectrum and the service professional and endearing. Exclusivity without extortion. A breath of fresh air from the countless plain pizza outlets sprawled in Marseille. I am still frankly salivating, can't wait to come back.

We tried La Tribeca on a Saturday night and it was very busy, with lots of people, but despite that the service was surprisingly fast and efficient.
The outdoor seating is really nice and adds to the overall experience.
We ordered several pizzas as well as the ravioli with truffle and burrata, and everything was absolutely delicious. The pizzas have a really great crust and the portions are generous, which we really appreciated.
Overall, a great spot with good food and a lively atmosphere, definitely worth visiting.

We visited this restaurant in March 2026. The food was excellent. Everything we ordered was great. We've had pizza in many countries including Italy and this is top notch ingredients and taste!
It was very busy and we sat down the waiter was warm, kind and he assisted us with wine selection; we didn't realize he was the owner until ready to leave. As a final gesture of kindness he agreed to take a picture with me and made my heart smile. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Highly recommend this establishment.

Went there recommended by my sister who visited in 2023. Pizza is really good, tomato sauce is authentic, dough is proper stuff. Would definitely go back if in Marseille.
It is super busy and getting a table can be tricky.

Amazing pizza! I really wasn't expecting anything fantastic, but I was very wrong. A lovely location right on the marina, with beautiful views. A reasonable amount of outdoor seating, protected from the wind and rain. We had the gnocchi inside a pizza dough bowl, and a Diavola pizza. Both very amazing. Lovely airy dough, incredible sauce and flavours. Prices were on the high side, but €50 for 3 drinks and 2 main meals was acceptable. Would recommend

We had good lunch here. The dinning was almost perfect; delicious food and desserts except one thing, that little crème brûlée was not fresh, it had some weird taste. I was a bit disappointed because it was my favourite dessert among others. However, the service was good. A little too pricy for me though.

Les panisses étaient très bons, je les recommande pour le début. Et aussi, la pizza est suffisante pour 2 personnes.// The panisses, a traditional dish here in Marseille, were great, although the sauce that came with them was not my favorite for marinating. Besides that, I recommend them as an appetizer if you haven’t tried them before. We also ordered pizza, and the size was more than enough for 2 people.

Both the towel and the spoon were dirty, and another person sitting at our table had another dirty spoon. Too many to be a coincidence, sorry.
The food was nice, although not really Italian.

Great pastas and pizzas, reasonable prices and very welcoming staff! We arrived with two kids and they accommodated us with a smile. Dessert was also amazing.

We sat outside in this popular restaurant just 2 minutes from our apartment overlooking the old port and chose from a wide selection of pasta, pizza, seafood dishes. The service was excellent and the food was really good. Ravioli, calamari and Italian salad. Strongly recommend 👍

Very tasty food and friendly staff. There was one waiter who spoke english so we had to wait until he was available to help us. everything on the menu is in French. But it’s pretty easy to make out what the food is. We got ravioli and what seemed like a margarita pizza with pesto sauce. Both dishes were very good! Would recommend!

Unfortunately can’t recommend this place for tourist who can’t speak French. Beside language barrier the food has nothing to do with Italian food. Pizzas were terrible - cheese with the pie. You can’t feel any other taste.
2* for place on tarace and for hard work of waiter who tried her best despite the fact of language barrier.

Really enjoyed our late lunch and their service. They would recommend when we asked them, and their food was really delicious and wonderful. We’re glad to score a table at that late timing for lunch!

This place was close to our hotel so we took a chance that they would be able to take us without a reservation. Our food was lovely and flavourful and the service was friendly and welcoming. The lemonchella at the end of the meal was a nice touch. Reasonably priced with large portions.

My friend and I had an amazing experience here. Great service, kind and attentive staff. Food was absolutely delicious, reasonably priced as well! If you are visiting Marseille, you must go to Al Dente!

The food was amazing and we had such a fest! Pillowy soft gnocchi with the best pesto ever!
The price is very good and the portions generous.

We looked online and this place seemed great but when we arrived at 638 it was closed so we went to a nearby bar for a drink and came back 45 minutes later and it was still closed. Staff inside tables set but door locked we were very disappointed the online information clearly didn't match the function operations of the place.

What a gem! This spot serves up the most delicious Italian sandwiches—fresh, flavorful, and packed with authentic taste. The tiramisu is pure bliss, light yet indulgent with every creamy bite. Top it all off with flawless, friendly service that makes you feel right at home. Can’t recommend enough! ♥️♥️♥️

The female staff was really kind, but I got a different food from the picture in the review. I ordered gnoci, and if you compare the gnoci I received with the gnoci in other reviews, you can see something completely different. The appearance and the amount are all different, and I'm very unpleasant. I complained that they said they would give you more if you wanted it after eating it all. I wasn't dissatisfied with the amount of food, but I was disappointed with the food that was supposed to be provided and clearly different from the food they didn't get the point at all.

It’s too hot to stay under the sun in the middle of the day. A waiter was really nice and set a sun umbrella for us. Nice place and nice service indeed.

Service was very slow, I had the feeling no one wanted to work.
Food however was excellent!

Tips for Choosing the Right Italian Restaurant in Marseille
Before you make a reservation, it is worth understanding how the dining culture in Marseille differs from other French cities. While Paris may lean heavily on high-end, formal dining, Marseille’s Italian scene is often more boisterous, generous, and rooted in family tradition. Here are a few expert tips to ensure you get the most authentic and satisfying meal possible.
1. Look Beyond the Vieux-Port
While dining with a view of the boats is tempting, restaurants directly on the Quai des Belges often cater to tourists with inflated prices and frozen ingredients. To find the best Italian food, walk ten minutes inland. Neighborhoods like Noailles, Le Camas, or the 7th arrondissement often house family-run spots where the focus is purely on the food rather than the view.
2. Check the Flour and the Oven
If pizza is your goal, look for mentions of a wood-fired oven (four à bois) and specific flour types like Caputo or Petra. A true Neapolitan pizza should have a soft, leopard-spotted crust that requires high heat. If the menu doesn’t mention the oven or the dough’s fermentation time, it is likely a standard French pizzeria rather than an authentic Italian one.
3. Prioritize the “Primi” over the “Secondi”
In many Italian restaurants in France, the pasta course is where the chef’s skill truly shines. While a grilled fish or a veal Milanese can be excellent, the freshness of handmade pasta is often the best indicator of quality. Ask the server which pasta shapes are made in-house daily; if they hesitate, you might want to look elsewhere.
4. Respect the Booking Culture
Marseille has experienced a culinary renaissance, and the best tables are in high demand. Unlike some casual seaside towns, you cannot always walk into a top-tier Italian restaurant at 8 PM on a Saturday without a reservation. Many of the smaller, higher-quality osterias have two service times. Book ahead, especially if you are dining in a group or visiting during the summer festival season.
5. Don’t Skip the Digestif
The Italian meal doesn’t end with the tiramisu. Many authentic restaurants in Marseille offer a selection of amari (bitter herbal liqueurs) or house-made limoncello. Taking the time to finish your meal with one of these is not just about the drink; it signals to the host that you appreciate the culture. It is often during this final stage that you’ll receive the best local tips from the owner.
6. Look for Regional Specificity
Italy is a country of diverse regions, and the best restaurants in Marseille know this. A restaurant that claims to serve “everything” from Sicily to Milan is often stretching itself too thin. Look for menus that focus on a specific region, such as Sardinian, Neapolitan, or Pugliese cuisine. This specificity usually means the chef is cooking from personal heritage or specific training rather than a generic Italian playbook.
The Italian dining scene in Marseille is a beautiful reflection of the city itself: warm, chaotic, deeply traditional, and endlessly generous. Whether you choose a high-end establishment overlooking the Mediterranean or a tiny hole-in-the-wall serving only three pasta dishes, the key is to slow down and enjoy the moment.
The fusion of French produce with Italian technique creates a dining experience that is uniquely Marseille. As you explore the city’s winding streets and sunlit terraces, let your appetite guide you away from the obvious and toward the authentic.
With a glass of Italian red in hand and a plate of perfectly sauced pasta before you, you will quickly understand why this port city has become a sanctuary for those who take Italian food seriously.
