15 Best Cafes in Menton

Nestled between the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and the dramatic foothills of the Alps, Menton is often celebrated as the "Pearl of France." While the town is famous for its lemons, microclimate, and lush gardens, its café culture is equally deserving of attention. The gentle pace of life here invites you to linger over a perfectly pulled espresso, watch the world go by, and soak in the pastel-colored beauty that defines this corner of the Côte d’Azur.

Menton’s unique geography influences everything, including its food and drink. Because the town enjoys nearly 316 days of sunshine a year, most cafés have mastered the art of outdoor seating. Whether you prefer a sun-drenched terrace on the promenade or a hidden, shady nook in the medieval Old Town, there is a corner waiting just for you.

The café scene here is refreshingly diverse. You will find everything from historic establishments that have served locals for generations to modern, artisanal roasters pushing the boundaries of specialty coffee. It is a place where a traditional French café crème coexists happily with an oat milk flat white.

Exploring these spaces offers more than just a caffeine fix; it offers a window into the local lifestyle. You can start your morning with a buttery croissant, pause for a mid-afternoon citron pressé, or end your evening with an aperitif as the sun dips below the horizon. The rhythm of Menton is best experienced one cup at a time.

To help you navigate this charming border town, we have curated a list of the best spots to sit, sip, and savor. We focused on quality of beverages, atmosphere, location, and authentic local character. Whether you are a digital nomad seeking Wi-Fi or a traveler seeking ambiance, this guide has you covered.

Here are the 15 best cafes in Menton to add to your itinerary.

A great spot for a relaxed breakfast or lunch. They serve food until 3 pm, and beverages until 5 pm, which is perfect if you’re not an early riser or want to linger a bit longer. The coffee is excellent, and the fresh juice or smoothie of the day is always a treat. The avocado toast options are a highlight. I especially loved the “Summer Toast” with grilled vegetables, full of flavour and beautifully done. They also offer a nice selection of cookies, cakes, and other baked goods if you’re in the mood for something sweet. On top of that, the people working there are warm and friendly, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. Simple, fresh, and consistently delicious
Yanitzel Karina★★★★★
Highly recommend when you're visiting Menton. Food was amazing! The staff were so warm and welcoming, also they speak different languages so you will not face gap communication. Turkish eggs, delicious!
Patrick Smolders★★★★☆
Nice atmosphere and decoration. Eggs benedict 18,50 Euro and Ice Matcha for 8,50 Euro so expensive for Menton standards. High quality food.
santini shop★★★★★
Difficult in these times to get a proper filter coffee, the big chains have dove away with them, and being so close to Italy, most coffee’s are Italo-centric. So what a chance to find a coffee house that checks that box. Add to this the choice of fine homemade cakes (cinnamon rolls heated when served!) a relaxed atmosphere, polite and courteous staff, just what’s needed for a break. “You know, this is — excuse me — a damn fine cup of coffee. I’ve had many cups of coffee in my life, but this is one of the best.” Dale Cooper.
Lori Hamilton★★★★★
This place far exceed my expectations! The food, service, and location were fantastic! And the waitresses spoke English. The only negative was that some customers were smoking near us. You can't control that, though. Pictured is Eggs Benedict and Banana Pancakes with caramel and walnuts. We didn't order any sweet potato fries, but they looked fantastic! We paid about 20 Euros per person.

Luca Cimpeanu★★★★★
This is Menton’s best matcha spot. The owner is incredibly kind, and the matcha is really good. The only downside is that they only have vegetarian milk options like coconut or oat milk. Other than that, it’s a great option.
Noemi Nieberl★★☆☆☆
The place looked promising, but we left disappointed. The matchas don't match the picture, neither in color nor in quality. It was grainy. I asked for a warm matcha latte and recived in a cup with a straw. The vanilla matcha did not have any matcha flavour, more like vanilla milk.
Samuel Wolf★★★★★
Very tasty Matcha, coffees, chocolate, everything with different plant-based milk alternatives which you also could choose from I guess, but I just ordered and let the bartender decide 🙂 (No cow's milk available!) There are really fancy drinks that look and taste fantastic, everything made on the spot. Also there's sushi and bowls which are also really good. The owner (?) is really friendly and speaks good English. Please support this small local business! 🙂
zarra11★★★★★
Very good matcha 🙂

JULIDE★★★☆☆
It’s not really possible to sit at the table you prefer, as most of them are marked as reserved. We were told reserved guests would arrive, but no one came, so we ended up at a very uncomfortable table for two, which made breakfast difficult as even our plates barely fit. The staff were good, and I don’t think this was their fault. It seems more like the management’s approach, and because of this I was not fully satisfied.
Vicente Ramirez Garat★★☆☆☆
The service was great until we got the owner. We had an issue with our order and she (at first) refused to change it. We ended up paying for something we didn’t even consume. And honestly the food was not fresh at all. Wouldn’t come back. Keep walking and you’ll find way better options at the same price.
Erika Steponavičiūtė★★☆☆☆
Food was very mid for the price, lack of flavour, not tasty. I don’t know why people evaluate this place with good stars. Location was good. Waiter (male) was positive, though more smilling would be appreciated :))
Christopher Varney★★★★★
We are on an extended state here in Menton (from Canada) and discovered Vanilla Bakery. It was our hope to find a local coffee shop to call our own while away. Vanilla has delivered in every way! Their menu is outstanding with budget friendly pricing. The shop is extremely clean and bright and to top it all off the staff are wonderful and have become our friends. Highly recommend!
Rachel Kreynin★★★★★
Nice bakery in Menton with a tasty croissant selection, from plain croissants to pistachio croissants and the croissant was fresh and perfectly textured. My cafe latte was also well crafted with a good amount of milk foam and served with a glass of water. The atmosphere is nice, with outside and inside seating and umbrellas outside for shade. The service was quick and friendly. I look forward to my next visit

Best place for lunch - not only in Menton, but the area. The food is amazing , must try - hidden gem. Service is very friendly The quality of food is the same as last year, when we discovered it- the half chicken and fries is top , the tuna with lemon rise, the beef cheek Bourguignon with pasta, the whole grilled octopus with potato…. So yummy! And for the desert the french brioche with caramel, nuts and vanilla ice cream. You will not regret it! Enjoy!
Georges Khabbazian★★★★★
A must visit if you are in menton. The food is really tasty. Made with fresh ingredients. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place. It's also a 1 min walk from the beach
Polly Wong★★★★☆
Delicious food. Grilled octopus is very soft and tasty. Clams are perfectly matched with the sauce. Tuna salad is fresh.
Ma O★★☆☆☆
Tempted with good reviews we went there for lunch. This what was supposed to be citron risotto with shrimps was… kind of super overcooked rice on a side… it was so overcooked that it kept this shape glued together… two shrimps and three saint jacques around… for me risotto should never be shaped like a potato ball and… just look at the photo… it really stay this way! The little amount of some green and red souse was put around… I tried many risotto in France and Italy and first time I got so overcooked thing… really… sad… for sure won’t go back there
mari charpagne★★★★★
Brilliant service every time! The food is absolutely delicious, and you can really taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients. A wonderful place with a great atmosphere—I highly recommend it!

Fabulous! Great spot right next to the beach. Super friendly and kind staff. Perfect for the end of a beach day; drinks and tapas style food. We had 3 piece Empanada (beef, chicken, and tomato & mozzarella), and guac and hummus with pitta and tortillas. Delicious! Thank you so much for a wonderful welcome and experience.
Arpit Mittal★★★★★
Came here for drinks with friends. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, just the kind of place where you want to linger a little longer. Alan took great care of us throughout the evening, always kind and smiling, and even surprised us with a complimentary snack. The drinks were larger than expected and beautifully made. The Mademoiselle is great. Overall, it felt warm, easy, and genuine a spot I’d happily come back to. Highly recommend!
Steven Rebozzi★★★★★
In a desert of joyful servers in our trip to Menton, we found an oasis of joy at Lemon Bay! The people here are happy, cheerful, and so friendly. The food was delicious, the beer refreshing, and the views of the bay and Menton incredible. Highly recommend spending an afternoon under the shade soaking joie de vivre!
Carly Davison★★★★★
Had the best lunch here today. The staff was so kind and welcoming. Cannot recommend this spot enough!
Alicia X★★☆☆☆
Feeling Scammed, ordered an ice latte and give me a Frappuccino of 7 euros which I have no idea cuz it taste the same just with whipped cream. It’s so tiny as well maybe 180ml max without the whipped cream part. My bad for trusting local business in such a touristy place.

Amazing staff, backed by phenomenal food. Already our highlight of Menton. Already feels like an institution. You’d be doing yourself a disservice not popping by for a caprese sandwich and fougrasse not to mention some of Menton’s famous lemonade.
Georgia P★★★★★
Really friendly and helpful staff, with phenomenal sandwiches. Absolutely worth a visit!
Bram Schouten★★★★★
What a lovely spot! We stopped by Mitron café and enjoyed coffee, freshly squeezed juice, and water — all spot on. But the star of the morning was without a doubt the lemon cake: the best I’ve ever tasted. Fresh, just sweet enough, and bursting with real lemon flavour. On top of that, the owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the visit complete. If you’re in Menton, this place is a must. We’ll definitely be back!
Maddy Payne★★★★★
Beautiful cafe with delicious food, tasty lemonade and homemade local cakes! The staff were so lovely and accommodating, finding us an extra table and explaining all the sandwiches in English. Nice views too!

Everything we got was very good, I would have however appreciated some more iced coffee options, especially in these super hot summer days!

A fantastic new spot right in the heart of the Menton market! ☕️✨ Koko Café has amazing coffee, lovely service from the girls, and the food is absolutely top. Everything feels fresh, welcoming, and full of good energy. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Menton! ❤️
Hélder Diniz★★★★★
Fine cuisine, specialty coffee and in house baking seem to be KOKOs standout points. I’ve been staying a few days in south of France and stumbled upon KOKO’s interesting menu, decided to stop for lunch. They had no more free seats but the sweet Camille made sure we would get fed 😄 and served us a meal in outside tables, where she had to cross 1/4 of the market to get to us. Then Rosanna’s cooking made us speechless with a point-perfect swordfish and a tomato beurre blanc sauce out of this world. I was genuinely impressed with the presentation and level of detail and flavor that was delivered from a “simple small kitchen” in a market. Wish I lived in Menton to experience this regularly. Wishing all success to KOKO

This place is an absoloute gem and a must visit in Menton, epecially if you want to concentrate a bit on somie work, answers some e-mails or just enjoy a relaxed coffee - all the coffee drinks we tried were excellent. I visited many times (and also Recife before the change) and really felt at home, thought some deep thought and wrote some good stuff, and the same goes for my wife. The host is very welcoming and friendly and the options for grabbing a bite are excellent!

Best coworking café in town! We drive everyday from Italy to meton just to visit o recife! Best pain au chocolates! I can highly recommend the place for remote workers. It has a space in the back only for laptop workers, it’s quiet, the WIFI is amazing, and the prices are very fair. The owner is very nice and helped us with lunch recommendations. We’ll definitely come back. Every small + big town should have a place like O recife

Very friendly owner. Tasty food. Glutenfree brownies. The only thing missing is a vegan option for breakfast. Large variety of teas.

We were greeted as soon as we walked in. The decoration feels warm and cozy for a quick break from Menton “hiking”. We were recommended the bagel of the day, which was tuna mayonnaise bagel. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! The softness of the bagel is balanced out with the other ingredients perfectly. For drinks we ordered the Marocchino, a mocha but with its own unique taste. Definitely one of the best cafe’s ive been in southern france ❤️
J Bra★★★★★
Please visit this sweet little cafe if you are in Menton. We stumbled upon this little gem in the heat of summer and grumpy tourists and were delighted that the hosts maintained an extremely cheery and helpful attitude towards all patrons. Food really good too and we are vegetarians! Good bagel sandwiches with thoughtful veggies and excellent prices. The star of our meal was the perfectly frozen coffees - so good we had 4!! But above all, some of the nicest hosts we encountered during our 2 week visit to the south of France. Good prices and good food and excellent hosts/owners! Just go and relax and be happy that you are in a little slice of heaven.

Gem! On my trip to Nice I hunted for a dirty chai latte but all of them where just not chai-y. Then I stumbled upon Edwige in Mentón and they know what they’re doing. Cute spot with great dirty chai latte, lemon cheesecake and I will definitely be back to try their bagels.

3.25 ⭐️ Stylish but overpriced and service was adequate but unremarkable. Tried the; ☕️ The Cold Coffee Cream & Milk Cream - was on the sweeter side yet refreshing ☕️ Summer Fruit Smoothie - was dense and overly thick, making it difficult to enjoy. ☕️ Croissant - was disappointing, lacking flakiness and tasting stale rather than fresh.

Essential Tips for Enjoying Cafés in Menton

To make the most of your café-hopping experience in this unique French-Italian border town, it helps to understand a few local customs and practical details. While Menton is incredibly welcoming, knowing how the café culture works here will save you money and help you blend in with the locals. From where to sit to what to order, these insights will enhance your experience.

1. Understand the Terrace Pricing Rule
In France, and especially in Menton, the price of your coffee often changes depending on where you sit. You will notice menus listing a price for au comptoir (standing at the bar), en salle (inside at a table), and en terrasse (outside). Sitting on a scenic terrace with a view of the sea will cost a premium, but for many, the view is worth the extra euro.

2. Go Early for Pastries
Menton’s best bakeries and cafés sell out of their signature treats quickly, especially during the tourist season. If you want a warm croissant or a traditional tarte au citron made with local lemons, aim to arrive before 9:30 AM. Not only will you get the freshest selection, but you will also enjoy a quieter atmosphere before the lunch rush begins.

3. Embrace the Aperitivo Hour
Due to Menton’s proximity to the Italian border, many cafés adopt the Italian tradition of the aperitivo. If you order a drink—such as a Spritz, a glass of rosé, or even a sparkling water—in the early evening, many establishments will bring you complimentary snacks. These could range from olives and peanuts to small slices of focaccia or pizza.

4. Carry a Little Cash
While most modern cafés in Menton accept credit and debit cards, some of the smaller, family-run establishments in the Old Town have a minimum spend for card payments. If you are just stopping for a quick espresso, which is usually quite cheap, having a few coins in your pocket is polite and practical.

5. Slow Down and Linger
Café culture in Menton is not about grabbing a drink to-go and rushing to the next sight. Service is intentionally relaxed; waiters will not rush you with the bill. If you need to pay, you usually have to ask for l’addition. Take this as permission to sit back, read a book, or simply people-watch without feeling guilty about occupying the table.

6. Seek Out the Local Citrus
Menton is the lemon capital of the world, and you should absolutely use your café visits to celebrate this. Look for specialties you won’t find elsewhere, such as citronnade (homemade lemonade), lemon-infused iced teas, or desserts featuring the local Menton lemon. It is the perfect way to cool down after exploring the gardens.

As you wander through the colorful streets, from the bustling Marché des Halles to the quiet Promenade du Soleil, let your senses guide you. The sound of a milk steamer, the smell of fresh bread, or the sight of a sun-drenched terrace are all invitations to pause.

Menton is a town that rewards the leisurely traveler. By taking the time to sit in these cafés, you are not just fueling your body; you are participating in a cherished local ritual that has defined the rhythm of the Riviera for decades.
