15 Best Affordable Restaurants in Dijon

Dijon might be world-famous for its mustard, but the capital of Burgundy has quietly become one of France’s most compelling food cities. Beyond the Michelin-starred tables and historic brasseries lies a vibrant culinary scene where tradition meets affordability. For travelers and locals alike, eating well here does not require a luxury budget or a formal reservation weeks in advance.

The city’s gastronomic identity is deeply rooted in Burgundian terroir. Rich beef bourguignon, parsleyed ham, snails, and the iconic pain d’épices (spiced bread) dominate menus, but a new wave of bistronomie is reshaping expectations. Young chefs are reinterpreting these classics with modern techniques while keeping prices accessible to students, families, and curious visitors.

Understanding the local dining rhythm helps you save money. Lunchtime “formules” or set menus are often half the price of evening à la carte dining. Many of the best affordable spots are tucked away on side streets near Les Halles market, where chefs source their ingredients daily. Avoiding tourist-heavy squares and following the lunch crowd to neighborhood bistros will reward you with authentic flavors at honest prices.

The following selection focuses on restaurants where the value matches the quality. We have prioritized places with consistent service, generous portions, and a genuine connection to Burgundian cooking. Whether you need a quick savory crêpe between museum visits or a three-course dinner without the white-tablecloth markup, Dijon offers a table for every budget.

Each entry below has been chosen for its ability to deliver a memorable meal for under roughly €25 per person. You will find traditional Lyonnaise-style bouchons, modern vegetarian-friendly kitchens, and family-run establishments that have served locals for decades. The common thread is excellent food that respects both the region’s heritage and your wallet.

Here are the best affordable restaurants in Dijon for a satisfying meal without the hefty price tag.

What an exceptional dining experience! The atmosphere is wonderfully inviting, and sitting out on the terrace with a direct view of Notre-Dame de Dijon makes it even more special. On top of that, the service was top-notch—attentive, friendly, and efficient. The quality of the food is truly outstanding, especially considering the very reasonable prices. We started with the escargots, which were cooked to perfection, followed by a rich, comforting, and deeply flavorful Boeuf Bourguignon. To wrap up the meal, the chocolate mousse was pure bliss—light, rich, and the perfect sweet ending. From start to finish, every single dish was phenomenal. It easily offers the best bang for your buck in town, and I cannot recommend this place enough. We will definitely be back!

My dining experience was very disappointing. This is a popular restaurant, so long waiting times are expected. However, there were many flies inside the dining room. There was a full‑one‑hour gap between my starter and my main course. During this long wait, I could only watch how the service and dining environment worked. I am not sure whether service is slower for solo diners, or if the confit duck simply takes a very long time to prepare, but one hour is far too long. Many customers who ordered at the same time as me had already reached their desserts. I noticed that on the upper floor, runners place dishes on a high stand. While the waiters were getting the plates ready, I saw three or four flies hovering around the food. Flies also kept landing on my table and the table next to mine. I do not know if this is a normal situation here, yet other diners seemed to put up with it. Overall, I would strongly advise against visiting for dinner if you are dining alone.

A great first introduction to French cuisine, especially if you're a traveler and not a local. The prices are quite reasonable and the overall vibe is lively and enjoyable. However, the space is quite noisy mainly because it’s relatively small, with many tables and even more people. As a result, you should be prepared for some waiting time before being seated. Overall, a nice experience, but it helps to know what to expect.
Florian Roth★★★★☆
Classic French bourgeois cuisine with unbeatable value for money, especially considering the location. We came on a Friday evening in summer and were lucky enough to get one of the few tables outside, right in front of the church. The interior felt a little too much like a large dining hall for our taste. The service was extremely friendly and welcoming, but unfortunately quite slow, with a few mistakes along the way. Everything was corrected without any fuss, which we appreciated, but ideally these things shouldn’t happen in the first place. Overall, a very enjoyable evening: great location, classic French food and excellent value for money.
Fabiola Perez★★★★★
The best French restaurant if you’re looking for a quick and tasty option. Their menu is short but one of the best we tried in Dijon. Taste the snails and the slow cooked meat, totally worth it the wait. Dog friendly, reservations not allowed and you will have to wait for your table, but 💯 worth it.

What a great find! I had to wait an hour while my car was being inspected. I stumbled upon this place by chance. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the menu is lovely, and it's incredibly peaceful (I was on the terrace overlooking the road) – perfect for reading. The waitress was so friendly! I highly recommend it for a coffee, a meal, reading a book, or working quietly.
Jacqueline Ortiz★★★★★
Excellent!! I'm not a vegetarian, but I was very happy (and pleasantly surprised, hence the half-eaten meals that were photographed 😅) with everything. Plus, the staff were incredibly friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. Perfect for lunch!
Marine Cattaneo★★★★★
La Fourmilière is an incredible place where you truly feel at home. I feel completely at ease, while still being pampered by the staff. The dishes are delicious, prepared with care, and with an eco-conscious approach. The Saturday brunches are really lovely, the menu changes regularly, and it's always delicious!
Xavier Hamelin★★★★★
This is a wonderful discovery! A vegan restaurant in the heart of Dijon, quite close to the city center. Its cozy, café-like atmosphere is truly excellent. The dishes are delicious, made with simple, seasonal ingredients sourced from their own shop. There's a wide selection of hot drinks, and the quality of the food reflects their commitment to eco-responsibility. The place is warm and welcoming. Whether you arrive by car, tram, bike, or on foot, it's very accessible. You'll be greeted with genuine warmth by charming people, and the restaurant offers delicious food. Gluten-free options are also available. Games and books are provided for relaxing, whether you're dining with family or friends. The shop offers a wide range of bulk items and products that are as organic and locally sourced as possible. The prices are very reasonable compared to large chains. I highly recommend this place; kudos to the whole team!

Beautiful atmosphere, incredibly friendly service, and absolutely delicious food. We especially loved the small plates, which were perfect for sharing and allowed us to try a variety of dishes. The evening was topped off with an excellent wine recommendation that paired perfectly with the meal. We would definitely come back and highly recommend it.

My husband and I were wandering around the market and chose this place for a coffee, juice, and flan. My husband had to leave. I ran a few errands and couldn’t find another place for lunch. I decided that La Menuiserie was the coziest lunch spot in the area, so I decided to eat there for the second time in the same day. Great choice. The staff are so friendly and the food was fresh, tasty, and beautiful. They made everything vegan mostly to please me. I spent hours, reading while eating and sipping my tea with flan. Highly recommend it!

We walked into this place by chance and ended up really enjoying it. The menu is small — just a few dishes — and I assume it changes depending on which local ingredients are available that day. We tried the creamy cheese with herbs, olive oil, patatas bravas, pork, and potato purée with garlic and baby asparagus, all delicious and carefully prepared. Prices match the quality, but portions are on the smaller side, so if you're hungry, plan on at least three dishes per person. The place has only a few tables, so it’s definitely advisable to make a reservation.
Julia Lindkvist★★★★★
We've been to La Menuiserie twice during our 5 days stay in Dijon, after a recommendation from our AirBnB host. Must say it's such a lovely place, with friendly service and amazing food. Our favorite is the empanadas 😍

Extraordinare! Extremely delicious! We've been here without reservation and where welcomed right away. Very good and sympathetic service with a lot of information about the meals. All is made fresh, organic and in house. We ate only vegetarian dishes and were totally satisfied. The desserts are tp die for. Thanks a lot for a very nice evening!

Fantastic Experience Near Les Halles. We stopped in without a reservation and were still seated within about 15 minutes, which already felt like a win. The owner herself greeted us-she was incredibly sweet, welcoming, and genuinely accommodating. She even ended up serving us personally, which added such a warm, family‑style touch to the whole evening. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the boeuf bourguignon, rich and perfectly cooked, and my wife enjoyed the escargot and duck-both dishes were outstanding. Everything tasted fresh, comforting, and authentically local. The location right next to the Les Halles market makes it an easy and charming stop during a day in the area. Overall, a wonderful experience with great food and even better hospitality. Highly recommend.

A very nice place, in the center of Dijon where you can fully enjoy the Burgundian cuisine. The food was excellent and the service waiting times were good considering the the place was almost full. In full season a reservation is highly recommended for dinner. See the attached pictures to see some of the dishes we had and we are highly recommending.

Lucky we found this place. Copains means comrade/neighbor/dude Traditional Bourgogne cuisine. Family restaurant. All French and locals. Excellent traditional and delicious dishes. Inexpensive. Don’t miss it. Caesar salad was massive and exquisite. Local dishes prepared in the local way.

We were lucky enough to get the last table for two without a reservation. Simple wholesome food - the gratin ravioles was my only option (vegetarian) but I was more than happy with it. Highly recommended - book in advance, though 😏. Dijon is beautiful.

What a fantastic evening! Jeff was an outstanding host and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We were truly spoiled throughout the entire evening with warm hospitality and genuine attention to detail. The selection of freshly prepared dishes was excellent, everything was delicious and clearly made with great care. The wines were perfectly chosen and complemented the food beautifully. What really made the experience special was the atmosphere. Jeff has a remarkable way of making his guests feel completely at home, turning a great meal into a memorable evening. There was absolutely nothing to criticize, and considering the quality of the food, wine, and hospitality, the price was more than fair. Highly recommended – we'll definitely be back!

Very classic French food, in a very classic French setting. Owner was very kind , friendly, attentive. Decent price. Try a kir as an apperitif it's a burgundy specialty! Also the wine selection is a really good range of prices and quality. THE chocolate mousse was very good. All in all, would recommend!

We had a lovely meal here tonight. We speak next to no french...i try... but the charming server helped us along with our order. We had 3 courses each and a bottle of wine. All reasonably priced, all nicely presented and all full of flavour We originally sat inside but the empty tables outside soon started to fill and it looked perfect with a great atmosphere. We highly recommend.

What a pleasant surprise we had this morning. While walking through the town, we saw the restaurant and decided to stop to have a bit. What we didn't know at the time was that it was a restaurant where they were involving young people with special needs/disability. This was amazing and the man who served us had Down syndrome but he was extremely professional, polite and very capable. On top the food was good. Overall, a great experience and would highly recommend people to visit this restaurant. Enjoy.
Paul Hurkmans★★★★★
While the service and drinks were excellent, it was the food that was the star of the show. The oeufs for entree, beef bourgignon for mains (highly recommend) and creme brulee for dessert were hard to fault. All traditional with a little twist. So nice!

We had great breakfast and lunch experience in this real french ambience café. Atmosphere is vibrant, food is very tasty, service is very polite and professional. Great choice of traditional dishes. We even got a free after lunch drink, and it was delicious. 😋
Wally Peach★★★★☆
We had a late lunch before an afternoon appointment. Convenient location in the pedestrian downtown area, one block away from the historic Les Halles (G. Eiffel). While the restaurant was busy we were seated almost immediately. Chose a table outside, easily accessible by wheelchair (only one step). Friendly staff attended to us quickly and took our orders. Typical French cuisine and comfort food. Very reasonable prices. Only a few minutes later our dishes were served. We had a Croque Monsieur, Beef Tartare, and a Carpaccio. All served with a side of green salad and French fries.
SEONG YEON LEE★★★★★
Delicious and very reasonably priced. They were kind to us even though we dont speak french well. It looked like a local favorite. I regret not having enough time to try the dessert because we were in a hurry. Even though they seemed very busy, they didn't turn us away. Instead, they kindly asked us to wait at the bar with drink and later showed us to table. I found them friendly.
Philippe Kouache★☆☆☆☆
Don't waste your time and money at this restaurant. It’s a disgrace to Dijon—the gastronomic capital—and a total tourist trap! The beef wasn't even Charolais (just generic EU origin); out of a 300g portion, half was gristle and fat. The sauce was tasteless, and the salad had black leaves. It was truly shameful—and the worst part was the restrooms 😠. Absolutely disgusting. Honestly, give this place a miss. The only saving grace was the service
Alexey Subach★★★★☆
This was one of the few places that were open a bit later than the typical lunch time. The food was descent. By the time we arrived they had run out of all the lunch offerings like steaks and we had to choose from a small set of options. The steak tartare was tasty but it tasted like salad and I could not taste any meat there because the meat was minced too finely and there was too much mayo inside. The carpaccio was accompanied by hard cheese and sundried tomatoes and the meat was also barely distinguishable. The meat was sliced very well in thin pieces though. The dishes came with sides (fries and salad) and those were good. There was a staff member who spoke French and the staff was friendly overall

This is the first restaurant in the Bourgogne area to demand a credit card number to confirm the reservation. We were about 10 minutes late when we arrived. We did try to call but by the time our phone got pickup, we were almost there. The service was actually a bit cold. It seemed that the staff was in a hurry. My starter beetroot was good but not outstanding. My sister had beef as main dish and she told me it was also just all right. We had quite a high expectation for this place due to the good ratings. My main dish fish of the day and the dessert were better. But compared to other restaurants we tried in Dijon, the overall experience is subpar.
ReviewGuy★★★☆☆
Unfortunately found the food pretty mediocre. Maybe it was an off night. Price was very reasonable, but service was only ok at best. Too many good restaurants here to recommend this one despite the good reviews.
R H★★★☆☆
The service was poor - unfriendly. Half of the seating is in a windowless basement (it's cold, bring a jacket). There are plenty Bib Gourmand and great price/value Michelin spots in Dijon. If you book in advance - this one will likely fall short of your expectations. If you happen to stumble across it when walking by - you'll probably enjoy the great value the food offers (without expectations, you might be more forgiving of the unfriendly service and poor ambience). But if you are booking in advance - I recommend picking one of the many other great restaurants Dijon has to offer.
Yulia Bless★★★★★
Amazing dinner experience at affordable price. Staff is very nice and welcoming, highly professional and always paying attention (despite just 2 people welcoming and serving). We had seating downstairs and despite big group next to us, was pleasant atmosphere. Food was excellent (had fish options for both starter and main course) and there was good wine selection. Highly recommend to visit!
Tom Muller★★★★★
Wow! What a wonderful restaurant! First, truly excellent food, creative enough to be interesting but always in the interest of making great food, not impressing you with oddity. The entree, a rabbit salad (think chicken salad, but with rabbit), slices of artichoke, pickled radishes and onions, was a wonderful marriage of different flavors and textures. The “filet” of duck—a perfectly cooked duck breast—was tender, flavorful and nicely set off with a few florets of cauliflower and the tenderest leeks I’ve ever had. The cheese course highlighted nicely affineed cheeses, mostly local, I believe. The service was by one of the owners, warm, efficient, just the right amount of presence. The atmosphere is very nice, but simple—no stuffiness at all. Wine list short enough to deal with but with more than enough options. This may be the perfect restaurant. You definitely need reservations, and if you make them online, watch out for an email that arrives a while later asking for a credit card to hold the reservation.

Cute little restaurant managed by the owner who does literally everything by himself (there's no other staff). The main dish served is gratin, in massive portions, but the menu also includes omelettes, salads and a steak. Inevitably service can be slow, but we were eating outside (the restaurant had tables in a little courtyard away from the main street) and we enjoyed the atmosphere, with french people starting conversations across tables.
Portia Nights★★☆☆☆
This restaurant had a charming, local atmosphere and stood out as one of the few non-touristy places open in Dijon. The portions were generous, comforting, and undeniably hearty. That said, a few aspects of the experience fell short for me personally: * There was no Wi-Fi or reliable phone service inside the restaurant. * The kitchen remains fully open to the dining area, and because much of the menu involves fried dishes, I left smelling quite strongly of fryer oil. * I was genuinely surprised that there were no Burgundy wines available by the glass — especially in the capital of Burgundy. * I asked to sit closer to the entrance for better reception, but the host declined because he anticipated a large party arriving and did not want the seating arrangement disrupted. I completely understood and even offered to move later if needed, but the request was still denied. In the end, no large group arrived. Overall, I can appreciate the rustic appeal and generous cuisine, but I personally do not understand the exceptionally high ratings. For me, the experience felt closer to a 3.9 than the current score reflects.

Felt very authentic! We were the only English speakers in the restaurant. The potato gratin was fantastic and the portions extremely generous. Paired with beautiful local wine at prices I could only dream of in England. Definite highlight of our trip around Europe.
Myriam Brulot★★★★★
What a charming place! A small restaurant tucked away in a side alley, with excellent gratin and enormous portion (doggie bags were needed). We very much enjoyed our meal and the experience.
Rod Narbesky★★★★★
We wanted an authentic local experience and this small restaurant looked interesting. The owner/chef does not speak English but communication was not a problem. Everything was fantastic from the service to the wine, dinner, and dessert. The portions were large and a take away doggie bag was offered. We enjoyed the leftovers the next day for lunch. This was the best Potatoes Au Gratin we have ever had. Thank you for a wonderful meal that was prepared perfectly.

A lovely little neighborhood restaurant near the historic center, a beautiful place, a superb welcome, excellent service, and delicious, homemade food: I had the eggs meurette with wine sauce, a real treat. I highly recommend this restaurant, which also sells local products. High-quality cuisine, we'll be back tomorrow... I highly recommend it.

Fantastic welcome, the portions are generous and excellent, and combining a shop with various local crafts and products is a brilliant idea. The meal itself was truly excellent at a very reasonable price. Thanks to Nico for the warm welcome and service, and to Chris for tantalizing our taste buds. I highly recommend it! Don't hesitate to stop by if you're passing through Dijon; its proximity to the historic center is a definite plus.

Excellent restaurant. It's hard to choose from the menu because everything looks so tempting... I tried the burger with meurette sauce, simply superb, with a poached egg nestled in the bun... I'll have to go back to try the other dishes. Plus, there's a lovely shop inside with many regional and/or artisanal products. I highly recommend it.

Everything is perfect at Nico and Chris's place in Dijon! I've already eaten there twice and I know I'll be back. Homemade food, friendly service, and a beautiful boutique restaurant all in one! I recommend booking in advance because they fill up quickly with their great reputation. From the starter to the main course and dessert, you'll be in for a treat! You'll also find local products (cakes, wines, honey, I think) and handcrafted items! And even Ma French Bougie in Dijon.

Worst rice and chicken I've ever had. Not as described, it was just plain white rice with lots of mayonnaise (on rice... Really?) and the tiniest sprinkling of fried chicken on top. No vegetables, no flavour, just disappointment.

I dont like to give 1 star but I had a very disappointing experience. The ingredients did not taste fresh at all, particularly the meats, which were tough and lacked flavor. Also, be aware that they do not serve any alcohol here, so you cannot order a glass of wine with your meal. Given the food quality, I won't be returning, I am sorry.

Authentic and delicious cuisine! Their Syrian coffee introduced me to a whole new side of this beverage—a real treat. Their dishes are always fresh and flavorful, whether it's their mixed vegetable salad or their house specialties. The owners are lovely, and you can feel their commitment to quality work and impeccable service. A must-try!

La Causerie des Mondes is a wonderful café/restaurant offering excellent coffee as well as tea and chocolate. They have a great bakery with a delicious assortment of sweet treats, and their menu had a small but interesting selection of meals, as well. Its location is just a few minutes’ walk from the palace but it's away from the jammed streets that plague most of the central area during the tourist season. Consequently, its atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, both in their outside seating area as well as a charming interior space.

This is a wonderful restaurant serving very fresh food and wonderful desserts. We enjoyed a perfect lunch outside with excellent service. When you see a chalkboard menu, stop and try it.

Heavenly food. The pear tart might just have been the best dessert I’ve ever eaten (mom’s pie aside). Friendly people, open patio out front, and fun interior. The meals were great, too!

Tips for Eating Affordably in Dijon

Navigating Dijon’s food scene on a budget is easier when you know a few local habits. The city rewards those who eat like a resident rather than a tourist. From timing your meals to choosing the right neighborhood, these practical tips will help you stretch your euros while tasting the best of Burgundy.

1. Always order the lunch formule. Most restaurants offer a two- or three-course set menu at noon for €15 to €22. This is the single most effective way to experience a kitchen’s best work without paying evening prices, which can be double for the same dishes.

2. Shop at Les Halles market before it closes. Dijon’s covered market is a temple of Burgundian produce. Many stalls sell prepared dishes like pâté en croûte, gougères, and regional cheeses at a fraction of restaurant cost. Grab a picnic and eat in the nearby Jardin Darcy.

3. Skip the Place de la Libération terraces. The grand square is beautiful, but you pay for the view. Walk five minutes toward Rue Berbisey or Rue Jeannin, where independent bistros offer better cooking at lower prices with a more local atmosphere.

4. Embrace the plat du jour. The daily special is usually the freshest, most seasonal dish on the menu and often the cheapest. It reflects what the chef found at the market that morning, making it both economical and authentically Burgundian.

5. Share a regional appetizer. Portions in Burgundy are generous. Order one plate of jambon persillé or escargots to share between two people, then follow with individual mains. You will taste the classics without overpaying or overeating.

6. Drink the house wine by the pichet. Burgundy is wine country, but bottles can be expensive. Ask for a “pichet” of house red or white, often sourced from nearby vineyards. It is typically excellent value and pairs perfectly with local cuisine.

Dijon proves that great food does not require a great fortune. By eating where locals eat, ordering the daily special, and timing your meals around the lunch formule, you can taste the soul of Burgundy for less than the cost of a museum ticket. The city’s affordable restaurants are not compromises; they are often the most honest expressions of its culinary identity.

When you leave Dijon, you will remember the rich wine sauces, the crusty bread, and the warm, unpretentious dining rooms more than any expensive tasting menu. That is the true spirit of this city: generous, grounded, and deeply delicious.
