As the historic capital of Burgundy, Dijon is famous for its mustard, medieval architecture, and world-renowned vineyards. Yet beyond the Palais des Ducs and the iconic owl carved into Notre-Dame’s wall, the city pulses with a vibrant contemporary café culture. For locals and travelers alike, finding the perfect spot to sip an espresso or enjoy a leisurely brunch is an essential part of the Dijon experience.
The café scene here is wonderfully diverse, ranging from cozy, wood-beamed hideaways to bright, modern specialty coffee roasters. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to work remotely or a sunny terrace to people-watch, Dijon offers a venue for every mood. The city’s proximity to some of France’s finest farms also means that menus are often filled with fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients.
In recent years, a wave of passionate baristas and restaurateurs has elevated the standard of coffee in the city. You no longer have to settle for a bitter, over-extracted shot; instead, you can find carefully sourced beans, alternative milk options, and precise brewing methods. This dedication to craft extends beyond the cup to the plate, with many cafés offering homemade pastries and inventive brunch dishes.
Navigating the cobblestone streets to find the best spots can be daunting if you are short on time. That is why we have curated a list of the essential addresses that define the city’s coffee culture. From the bustling center to the quieter, artistic neighborhoods, these are the places that locals swear by and visitors fall in love with.
To help you make the most of your caffeine-fueled exploration, we have categorized these establishments by their strengths. Whether you prioritize the quality of the roast, the atmosphere, or the food menu, there is a perfect table waiting for you. A lovely brunch this morning, hearty and delicious. The only slight downside was the somewhat long wait, but I still recommend it.
The staff are attentive, friendly, and very welcoming.
Don't hesitate to stop by.

A very warm welcome! A few catches, perfect for working and having lunch! Thank you so much for this moment!

Amazing butternut squash soup, especially on a cold rainy day the warm creamy rich soup was made for the soul 🫶🏼 Eggs benedict was super too, as well as the creative seasonal coffee and warm drinks that we really enjoyed. Service was exceptional, very efficient and friendly. Definitely worth a visit, merci!!! 😘

Morning Glory Café is an absolutely wonderful place for breakfast. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel at home from the moment you walk in. The menu is both interesting and delicious — you can really tell they care about quality and creativity.
The interior has such a relaxed, cozy atmosphere that it almost feels like being in your own living room. A huge bonus: dogs are welcome here, which makes the experience even more special. Definitely one of the best spots in Dijon to start your day! 🐾☕🥐

We came here after reading all the good reviews. The food was very disappointing, bland with no outstanding characteristics. It is the kind of food you eat in a mediocre cafe anywhere in the world. The bread is very dry and salad looks sad. The staff was nice, but could not make up for an overall unmemorable experience. Save your money and and time try one of the many other cafes in Dijon.

Simple and delicious. Good coffee, bread, eggs and bacon. What else can one ask for breakfast… 😋 they also have pancakes and other good stuff…

Really homey café with inexpensive comfort food. The vegetarian entrée and dish is only 7€ total! Be sure to book in advance, as the place is often packed (especially on weekends). You may have to do this in-person since their phone number doesn't work. I believe this is really only a lunch place too, though sometimes they have dinner. Would highly recommend!
Raquel Rivers★★★★★
Went for after dinner drinks, really quirky divey bar in a graffiti filled alley with super friendly bartender and clientele. Cheap drinks, no pretense, absolutely lovely.
Jordan Hughes★★★★★
Our favourite bar in Dijon. Friendly and eccentric crowd, not pretentious like other bars we went to. Huge thanks to the young guy working Friday and Saturday - he was incredibly helpful and welcoming, especially since my French is horrible. He also told me it’s the oldest bar in Dijon which we didn’t know.
Ken Paul★★★★★
Cheap drinks, house wine is great value and the staff and customers make the place. If you can’t speak French someone might speak your language and start a conversation. Go for the atmosphere, good coffee and it is a hole in the wall that is worth finding. Don’t be intimidated by the posters and graffiti on the walls down the alley.
Nikki W.P.★★★★★
I have lived in Dijon for 10 years now and there is no place like the Chez Nous. Eclectic energy of artist, locals, tourists, and friends. I'm going to be honest, I stopped going for a while. The vibez were low, the place was dirty and the atmosphere was just not the same. However, after the pandemic, I wanted to reconnect and started going again. Wow!! Is my new reaction, what a pleasant change. I even bring my clients in after meetings for the returned authentic Dijonnaise vibesz, drinks & food. Market days are fun! Super dog friendly and the dogs love the Chef!!

Best Foodie★★☆☆☆
The dough of the Flan dessert is super stale and rough. It has absorbed too much water from the crème part, which means it’s really bad Flan. The sesame cream doesn’t have sesame flavor but only syrup flavor, which means you would feel sugar tsunami 🌊 when eating it without any aromas.
It’s totally dessert disaster.
They should use better sesame quality or at least add much more sesame…instead of serving food with tons of sugar. It’s like getting diabetes after eating it.
They also use too much Gillettin for the cream part in Flan, which caused a weirdly chewy feeling. That’s why it’s not creamy at all.
Those tea leaves look amazing but taste bad. It’s just average food with beautiful cover.
Super overpriced cafe with low quality of foods.
So sad and disappointed
Environment is the only pros here

A wonderful coffee shop in the heart of Dijon! The coffee was excellent, the pastries were fresh and delicious, and everything was beautifully presented. The staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed atmosphere. A perfect place to take a break while exploring the city. Highly recommended!
Kinsuk 31★★★★★
What an absolute gem of a breakfast spot! No fixed menu? No problem — the sheer variety of choices makes it half the fun! We kicked things off with a Sesame Latte — a little lighter on flavour than I'd normally go for, but honestly? It grew on us and hit the spot in its own charming way!
The peanut cookie? Delightful. But the real star of the show was the Croque Monsieur — oh my, what a treat! Every single bite was pure joy. Whoever is behind that recipe deserves a standing ovation!
And let's not forget our cheerful server, whose bright smile made the whole experience even warmer. That kind of hospitality is genuinely rare and so welcome!
Bottom line — if you haven't been yet, what are you waiting for?! Get yourself there. You won't regret it! ☀️
V Barrote★★★★★
Very nice person at the counter. I asked in French about the ingredients because my wife is pregnant. And seeing that she didn’t speak French he answered to her in english, remarking that she was pregnant. Very nice and polite. We got a tea, a very nice V60 that tastes so much of strawberry and a very good Lemon Cheesecake.
Irina Karpova★★★★★
We went to this cafe because it's the only place where you can drink V60 filter coffee. It was an incredible experience! The coffee was incredible! The barista is passionate about his craft and knows how to impress even a coffee geek like me! The cafe itself has a very diverse coffee menu and excellent pastries. I highly recommend it!

Excellent coffee / cappucino with vegan milk. Such a delight because more difficult to find in France. We took one with oat milk and one with almond milk. The service was friendly and swift. Recommended!

Nice stop after a long drive. The cheesecake and pie were both delicious — well worth trying.
The coffee was the letdown though: the “black coffee” wasn’t actually black, and the latte macchiato had way too much coffee powder in it. Great for a sweet treat, but I’d skip the coffee.
Andreea Olteanu★★★★★
Such a cosy and welcoming cafe!
We had lunch, food and coffee was delicious.
The service was fast and the personnel was nice and attentive.
Would definitely return here!

A very cozy and aesthetically pleasing café. Tea is not cheap at 4€, but you do get a small pot. The Christmas rooibos I got was quite good, so I can't complain there. Other drinks are mostly around the 4-5€ range. The fresh-pressed juices looked good and I would definitely love to try those next time. A great spot to catch up with a friend or do some reading.

(It forced me to give a 4 star… if you don’t give a 4 and above, the app says this place cannot be reviewed. 🙁 not nice ..) We ran into their rush hour I guess. Waited for more than 40min to finally have our breakfast by then we were super hungry after travelling and waited and waited. Place is Bert lovely. Food is ok. Paul au chocolate is fine. Good location. But will not re-visit…if you are not too hungry or have nothing to do in the morning then take your time to enjoy the moment could also be nice.

Decent place for a coffee, meal or a sandwich. A bit too expensive for a coffee (5.5 eur for latte). My second most expensive one in Europe, but not the second best:)

Amazing music and amazing coffee. Super friendly
Cheese Biscuits (Thomas James)★★☆☆☆
Purchased two coffees to go, the cappucino was basically an espresso shot and the latte tasted really bad. These come out of a Nesspresso machine, and was charged just under 10 euro. Definitely not worth the price for coffee, wouldnt recommend the coffee here unfortunately. Service was friendly as an upside.

Very good salad bowls. Hot or cold. With a lot different sorts of ingrediencies. I had idian style with chicken. Homemade lemonade is also very tasty. The CafeBistro is direct inside pedestrian area and close to the notre dame. Prices are reasonable. Interiour is cosy and stylish. They have also seats outside.

I spent a few days in Dijon and had the chance to try out this new coffee shop again!
I tasted their strawberry and acai refresher, which was excellent and super refreshing, and their matcha latte with oat milk, a real treat 😍😍
On the last day of my stay, I went there for lunch. I had the chicken and curry pasta, their homemade iced tea, and a slice of lemon poppy seed cake—it was delicious! 🧋 I'll definitely be back on my next trip to this city 💪🏽

Cozy café with a nice terrace. This place really makes you feel at home. Loved the decorations. I was told the coffee was very good (I don't drink coffee myself) and can personally recommend the crémant, which was so good that I simply had to order a second glass.
We ordered croques for lunch and got served very fast. A great place for a break and some simple food.

The latte frappe was perfection on a warm summer morning. Cute interior and nice terrace outside as well. Highly recommend!

The Croque sandwich was good but we waited 1.5 hours for it and an order of toast. It took 30-45min to even be addressed by staff and an equal amount of time for our food. The coffee was delicious though!

We had great breakfast and lunch experience in this real french ambience café. Atmosphere is vibrant, food is very tasty, service is very polite and professional. Great choice of traditional dishes. We even got a free after lunch drink, and it was delicious. 😋
Wally Peach★★★★☆
We had a late lunch before an afternoon appointment. Convenient location in the pedestrian downtown area, one block away from the historic Les Halles (G. Eiffel). While the restaurant was busy we were seated almost immediately. Chose a table outside, easily accessible by wheelchair (only one step). Friendly staff attended to us quickly and took our orders. Typical French cuisine and comfort food. Very reasonable prices. Only a few minutes later our dishes were served. We had a Croque Monsieur, Beef Tartare, and a Carpaccio. All served with a side of green salad and French fries.
SEONG YEON LEE★★★★★
Delicious and very reasonably priced. They were kind to us even though we dont speak french well. It looked like a local favorite. I regret not having enough time to try the dessert because we were in a hurry. Even though they seemed very busy, they didn't turn us away. Instead, they kindly asked us to wait at the bar with drink and later showed us to table. I found them friendly.
Philippe Kouache★☆☆☆☆
Don't waste your time and money at this restaurant. It’s a disgrace to Dijon—the gastronomic capital—and a total tourist trap! The beef wasn't even Charolais (just generic EU origin); out of a 300g portion, half was gristle and fat. The sauce was tasteless, and the salad had black leaves. It was truly shameful—and the worst part was the restrooms 😠. Absolutely disgusting. Honestly, give this place a miss. The only saving grace was the service
Alexey Subach★★★★☆
This was one of the few places that were open a bit later than the typical lunch time. The food was descent. By the time we arrived they had run out of all the lunch offerings like steaks and we had to choose from a small set of options. The steak tartare was tasty but it tasted like salad and I could not taste any meat there because the meat was minced too finely and there was too much mayo inside. The carpaccio was accompanied by hard cheese and sundried tomatoes and the meat was also barely distinguishable. The meat was sliced very well in thin pieces though. The dishes came with sides (fries and salad) and those were good. There was a staff member who spoke French and the staff was friendly overall

I wanted to find a quiet place to rest after spending hours meandering through the Musee des Beaux-Arts and Espresso-t was perfect. It's tucked into a small nook and frequented by locals. My drink was really good, the music relaxing and varied. Plus, the service was excellent. If I were in Dijon for another day, I would come back and try the waffle... cuz it looked really good.
EA★★★★☆
Unfortunately, my experience here was underwhelming. The crepe didn’t taste great, and the atmosphere felt cramped, dimly lit, and a bit overwhelming. I was hoping for a more enjoyable visit but left disappointed.
Tricia Leo★★★★★
Really friendly service, good food and good regular coffee, the kind that you get back home. None of the usual too sour or too bitter coffee you get in France. Also some of the best and most authentic bubble tea around! (I'm Asian and we know our bubble teas) The owner gets the stuff genuinely from Taiwan!
Greg Horner★★★★★
Came for the excellent coffee. Bertrand(?) roasts excellent coffee beans and makes delicious what we would call a 2 shot latte in Australia. Here was called 2 shot flat white. Milk done perfectly.

Quiet the nice place to just sit, have a coffee and work on your stuff. There's a table upstairs to just sit down and chill. FREE WIFI!! The salads are incredible and also the "gaufre"!!

Great espresso!! This was undoubtedly one of the finds of our trip. Once we tried their coffee, we returned every morning—sometimes after grabbing breakfast (and coffee) someplace else. Nothing compared to their espresso.
The food is also excellent—perfect spot for a light breakfast or one of their savory toasts (after 11am for toasts, I believe).
We tried the fresh granola with yogurt and fruit, the French toast (our daughter’s favorite!), and the egg and cheese toast. Everything was wonderful. I recommend them all.
The proprietors go out of their way to make people feel welcomed and valued as customers. The guy even gave us recommendations for coffee spots in Lyon when it was time for us to continue our travels.
This coffee shop will be one of our enduring memories from our stay in Dijon. Thank you to the proprietors!!
James Westfall★★★★★
Best coffee I’ve had in France. Some of the best coffee I’ve ever had anywhere. This is a “must visit” if you’re in Dijon. The proprietors of this wonderful establishment put more effort and love into the craft of coffee making than almost anywhere I’ve been. And they’re dog-friendly! We were visiting by several local doggos while we enjoyed the coffee. Could not recommend more strongly. Merci!

Here I tried the best matcha of my life 💚
The guys at Wolf are truly passionate about what they do, preparing ceremonial matcha with a variety of options. The coffee was great, and the food was good too but THIS MATCHA. You really have to try it.
Tetiana Wolf★★★★★
Exceptionally friendly and delicious! We have there twice within our 2-day stay in Dijon to drink wonderful strawberry matcha 🍵, a perfect refreshment for a hot summer day. There are plenty of other exquisite coffee options and some bites. Of course, I couldn’t miss a place named “Wolf.”
Gayna Verlaecke★★★★★
We discovered this place by chance and loved it so much we came back the very next day — this time with friends.
The oat milk cappuccinos are absolutely on point — creamy, perfectly pulled espresso, and served in the most beautiful handcrafted speckled ceramic cups with stunning latte art.
The barista was super friendly and clearly loves what he does! That kind of energy makes all the difference.
If you’re in Dijon and love specialty coffee, this place is a must.

I don’t understand how this restaurant is highly rated. We sat for half an hour before our order was taken. Food came fast but not hot, not tasty. We had ordered a bottle of wine and somehow that came out after our food. Poor service and food, only salvaged by good atmosphere.

I had the best meal in my 10-day trip to France in this restaurant. The staff is very pleasant and will make you feel welcome and the food is really superb. To truly enjoy the café scene in Dijon like a local, it helps to understand a few cultural nuances and practical logistics. The pace of life here is relaxed, and the concept of "taking your time" is deeply ingrained in the social fabric. Whether you are a digital nomad or a tourist on a tight schedule, these insights will help you blend in and maximize your experience.
- Understand the "Terrace" Dynamic: In Dijon, seating on the terrace often comes at a slightly higher price than standing at the bar or sitting inside. However, the view of the medieval squares is usually worth the extra euro. If you are on a budget but want the view, order a simple café noir and enjoy the atmosphere without feeling rushed.
- Lunch Hours are Sacred: Many cafés that serve brunch and lunch will close their kitchens between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. While you can almost always get a drink and a sweet pastry in the afternoon, don’t expect to order a full meal at 4:00 PM. Plan your brunch for before 1:30 PM to avoid disappointment.
- Look for "Torréfacteur" or "Artisan": If you are a coffee purist, look for signs that say torréfacteur (roaster) or café de spécialité. These establishments source high-quality beans and take their brewing seriously, offering methods like V60 or Chemex that you won’t find in a standard brasserie.
- Don’t Skip the Non-Coffee Drinks: While the coffee is excellent in many places, Dijon is also famous for its regional beverages. Be sure to try a local blackcurrant syrup (crème de cassis) mixed with sparkling water, or a high-end hot chocolate, which is often made with melted dark chocolate rather than powder.
- Cash vs. Card: While most modern cafés accept credit cards, some smaller, traditional establishments have a minimum spend for card transactions (often 10–15 euros). It is always wise to carry a little cash in your pocket for a quick espresso stop.
The café scene in Dijon is more than just a place to get a caffeine fix; it is a window into the rhythm of Burgundian life. It is a place where students sketch in notebooks, families gather on Sunday mornings, and travelers rest their feet after a day of wine tasting. Taking the time to sit and observe is one of the greatest pleasures the city offers.
So, whether you find yourself nestled in a velvet armchair with a flat white or perched on a sunny step with a croissant, savor the moment. Dijon is a city that rewards those who slow down, and its cafés are the perfect places to do exactly that.
