15 Best Bars in Toulouse

Toulouse may be famous for its aerospace industry and distinctive pink terracotta architecture, but as the sun goes down, the “Ville Rose” reveals a vibrant and diverse nightlife scene. From historic wine caves tucked away in medieval alleyways to sleek rooftop terraces overlooking the Garonne River, the city offers a drinking experience for every mood and occasion. Whether you are a local looking to shake up your routine or a visitor eager to explore the authentic social fabric of the city, the bar culture here is deeply intertwined with the French Southwestern lifestyle.

The drinking culture in Toulouse is heavily influenced by its large student population, which keeps the energy high and the prices reasonable, especially in neighborhoods like Saint-Cyprien and the Capitole area. However, this youthful exuberance is balanced by a growing craft cocktail movement and a deep appreciation for regional wines and artisanal beers. You can easily transition from a casual afternoon aperitif of Pastis to a sophisticated late-night tasting of Armagnac or a locally brewed IPA within just a few city blocks.

Navigating the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming, as nearly every corner in the hyper-center boasts a bustling terrace. The best establishments in Toulouse distinguish themselves not just by their drink menus, but by their atmosphere, history, and the quality of their service. Some of the most memorable nights start in a hidden garden patio where you can barely hear the city traffic, or in a speakeasy-style lounge where the bartenders treat mixology as a theatrical performance.

This guide focuses on variety, highlighting places that offer something unique rather than simply listing the most crowded tourist traps. We have considered the quality of the spirits, the authenticity of the ambiance, and the overall value to ensure you have a reliable roadmap for your evening. From natural wine enthusiasts to rum aficionados and beer lovers, there is a specific corner of Toulouse waiting to become your new favorite haunt.

Before we dive into the specific venues, it is worth noting that French drinking customs differ slightly from those in other parts of the world. Bars here often serve as extensions of the living room, where conversations are intimate, and drinks are meant to be savored slowly rather than rushed. Additionally, many of the best spots are quite small, so arriving early or being prepared to stand on a lively terrace is part of the authentic experience.

Below is a curated list of the 15 best bars in Toulouse, representing the pinnacle of the city’s drinking scene. Each entry has been selected for its distinct character, ensuring that whether you want a quiet glass of wine or a loud night of dancing, you will find the perfect setting.

What a great pub. Nice selection of beer and you can order food via QR code. Very friendly staff and great atmosphere. I watched the Arg-Egypt match here. Very memorable. So went back the next day again 😀

I’m really torn writing this. We went twice today. Had the most amazing chicken Caesar salad it was huge and so tasty so decided to go back for dinner. Absolutely gutted. The worse food ever. I ordered chicken thigh was cold so I asked them to heat up and they added hot sauce. I know an English is not their first language but I showed him it was cold and I didn’t want to get sick. Enchiladas were tiny and ok. My daughter steak was nice. Sorry but 20euro for what I had and could not eat was just worse meal I had in a very long time. No one wants food poisoning from half warm chicken. My cocktail was like no alcohol in it and my daughters was the opposite so strong. No much service no water offered. Just felt really disappointed Day time perfect evening was just the worse.

We really enjoyed the ambiance and the food—it had a fun, lively vibe. The drinks menu seemed more tailored to a younger crowd, which adds to the youthful energy of the place. We visited on a friend’s recommendation and were glad to finally check it off our list. Would I go back? Probably not for myself, but I’d definitely recommend it to anyone with young kids or teens. It’s clearly one of the more happening spots in town…!

I absolutely love this place. It's a French-Irish inspired bar. I will be coming for St Patricks day, great Guinness, Killenney. The lads and lassies even gave me recommendations on where to find a pint of Smithwicks when me throat gets dry 🙏☘️🇫🇷
Dr. Mia Hanh Nguyen★★★★★
What a creative and awesome place to come and meet with your friends. Outside of the building looks very deceiving as it looks dark and unassuming. However, as you walk inside of the pub, it is lively and the decor is amazing. It is 3 stories high and lively throughout. This place is always packed as it seems it is the place to be. We only had drinks here but they also serve foods and does lunches as well .

Fat Cat was suggested to me by my good friend from Norway whose sister had recently studied in Toulouse. Although tired from travel, I was waiting for a friend to finish a late shift and decided to treat myself to a couple drinks. I was impressed by the thoughtfulness and nuance that was put into the creation of each of the three drinks I tried. A masterful mixologist who I think was named Jeanne highly suggested her rendition of bloody mary. I was pleasantly surprised to see the tomato juice extracted by the muddling of fresh cherry tomatoes. The evocative smell of these tomatoes reminded me of balmy blue Occitanie summer heat with a touch of bittersweet melancholy. The fresh tomato juice provided both a welcome subtle acidity, sweetness, and freshness that tantalized the front palate while providing a gentle caress in the finish. The atmosphere of the bar is classy and clean, and the employees are very friendly. Although two inebriated and vile British buffoons came into the establishment they soon left as they realized that they were out of their depth. I highly recommend Fat Cat to anyone looking for high quality cocktails in Toulouse. I surely didn't leave empty handed, but rather with fond memories of unique cocktails.
John McVicker★★★★★
This laid-back cocktail bar takes classic cocktails seriously and does a masterful job mixing them. If you like quiet, dark, friendly and professional cocktail bars, try this one. It’s our favorite in Toulouse-Centre.

Went there to watch the football match between France and Senegal. What a vibe ! And so much people 😆 that's really the place for this kind of night - TV screens everywhere- good choice of beers. Did not try the food.
Mary O'brien★★★★★
Busy pub with lots of atmosphere, cool to have a drink or 2 there on a balmy Friday night in Toulouse. Seems to be very popular with the locals. Wide range of draft beers.
Alfie Noakes★★★★★
An excellent experience! Superb staff, fantastic food, perfect beer, a great ambience and all at a more than reasonable price. It's enough to make me want to move to Toulouse! Highly recommended.

I love coming to the Black Lion when I’m in Toulouse. It’s the only bar that can properly do a Vieux Carré and and Old Fashioned with grace and ease. Great pub style seating indoors and amazing outdoor terrace seating when the weather is nice. Food and drinks are on point, offering a mix of Anglo-Franco choices for guests to choose from. The bar is slightly misleading to tourists that it is an Anglophone bar - it’s not and I’ve never received English service. If you don’t speak French staff will middle through with you and are as helpful as possible. The bar staff are also really fun and always happy to try and make cocktails I’ve had in other bars which is a nice touch. I recommend for anyone in Toulouse. 5/5.

Best bar in Toulouse! Very friendly and fast service. We had beautiful fish and chips. Definitely a recommendation. Drinks at very fair prices. The bar is so open and friendly that even the toilets have no doors 😉

We had a wonderful experience visiting this hidden gem inside the hotel! We visited for some drinks and food, and the tapas-style setup was perfect for sharing. There is a fantastic variety of flavorful options, including plenty of excellent vegetarian choices, which we highly appreciated. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious and beautifully prepared. We sat outside in the garden area, which provided a lovely, relaxing backdrop for the evening. Between the creative menu, the cozy ambiance, and the excellent food, this place is highly recommended.
G Solier★★★★★
This is a hidden gem. I was hesitant to write a review just because I know it’s not known to locals here and I don’t want it to get crowded. Kidding aside, this place is just wonderful. The restaurant has 4 different areas of dining and so 4 different atmosphere. I will write them so you can perhaps decide before hand and request which table you want when you reserve on the phone. First is the one in front of the street, most indoor part, I guess this is the interior restaurant area, it’s quiet and intimate; 2nd one is by the fireplace and same room as where the bar is, I guess this is the formal bar area as the tables are more for drinking and chilling than dining.. This room is very good during winter with the couch in front of the fake fireplace, the decor also is by par. 3rd area is the glassed patio..very nice! U have the lovely view of the beautiful garden. 4th is the exterior, nice lounge chairs and tables. Perfect for summer days and evening drinks. Cocktails are good, very mixologist menu, which I love. Waiter is cheeky and friendly. I have yet to try their food though but the drinks are great.
Sunny Prihar★★★★★
There is a cocktail expert and his name is Ben. If he is working your in for a treat. Really good recommendations…. Trust his expertise and knowledge. Sure others are good too but we were lucky to have him for our visit.
Jaime Forsyth★★★★★
We liked it so much that we went back for dinner the very next day when another friend arrived in Toulouse. I dream of the gazpacho soup and green salad as the perfect meal in the perfect place when you want food on the light and healthy side. We sat in the glass- walled sun room both times, and loved the view out to the large, beautiful patio.
A W★★★★★
A beautifully cozy and romantic atmosphere hidden away in the city. Absolutely loved it. Great food with lovely people. Definitely a new favorite of mine.

Nice corner joint to hang out and grab a cold one. Also equipped with multiple screens for whenever there's a match on. Recommended to go during happy hours.

The George and Dragon is a decent pub close to the city center, has a variety of beers and the stuff is fast and efficient. Recommend it!

Loved the cozy pub atmosphere. The staff is friendly and helpful. Everyone spoke French and English which made ordering drinks much easier. The old school hip hop music being played was a great vibe for Saturday night. Not sure if it's weekly but a karaoke session started later in the evening with both French and English songs being sung by patrons. It's now a go to spot whenever I am in the city.

Great cocktail bar! The guys and girls on staff are super friendly and passionate about their menu and sharing their drinks with you. It will be a regular spot when visiting Toulouse. Check out the cinnamon pineapple drink, the gin basil, and the chameleon.

I've been to a lot of bars around the world and had a lot of good drinks, but what is offered here ist the best I ever had! Amazing creative cocktails and such a nice and lovely service. This bar by it's own is worth traveling to Toulouse.
Inés Fernández★★★★★
Amazing place in Tolouse, hands down best cocktails we ever had in our lives! They have something for every taste and also non alcoholic options. Presentation of the cocktails is superb and delicate! The staff was super polite and friendly and the vibes of the place relaxed and with background music that doesn’t make conversation impossible. Nice decoration without it being crowded and full of things around. I can’t recommended it enough, I’ve already sent the location to the rest of my friends so if they come to Tolouse they can enjoy as much as we did! Thanks!
Nicolas Schaeffer★★★★★
Absolutely excellent cocktails! We tried eight of them, all of them with great taste and depth of flavour. Only downside, the place was loud and not very cozy.

I've been here a few times now and always have a really nice evening. Loads of variety with the cocktails and the interior is decorated nicely. The staff are amazing and super friendly; one of the main reasons we keep coming back!

Went two times. First time order stout got a cider but went back. Guy knew a lot about whisky but for those who know wishy a list would of helped picking out the harder to find. Was quiet when we went-bar man seemed to spend time outside smoking a bit. Prob would had one more whisky but left. Muscle wax good and place had good vibes.

Really solid spot. I ordered the fish and chips and would definitely get them again. Lina took care of our table and was great the entire night. She was attentive, easygoing and always came by at the right time. We’ll be back.

Stopped by for a drink or 2 whilst wandering toulouse in the evening. Good atmosphere, quite rustic location with a huge selection of spirits and other drinks to try. Didnt get any food but the menu was quite tempting. Played a lot of great music though. I think professional Handball was being shown on a few screens dotted around the place too. Didnt venture downstairs.
Mike and France Bertram★★★★★
Cool beers on a hot day. Air conditioning inside. The Bonnie Lassie, beer blanche was tasty.

Myself and 3 coworkers were “stuck” in Toulouse for 4 days. We stumbled upon Hopscotch on the first day and we were glad we did. It was a daily stop for us…some days it got two stops. Great drinks, great service and great atmosphere. A “must visit” when in Toulouse!

The atmosphere is good! I have visited TLS many times for work and after a long time back at this place again. It felt like I have been never away! Good to be back again! And I have to say, today they played background songs I like and I know... All dub music from OBF, Jah Version, Mexican Steppers, Vibronics and more... I enjoyed it! I enjoy every kind of music but this made this evening more special for me 😎

As a born and bred Irish lad I must say, appreciate the vibe but the Guinness is very sweet and doesn't taste like actual Guinness, the music is quite loud and you have to shout to speak, and it's quite expensive, but it does have a nice interior and lighting. Sláinte lads.

One of the few places that serves Guinness properly. I've been there a couple of times and I love the vibe. Easily the most international pub in Toulouse.

Great pub, great pub food and great service. Highly recommended if you love Irish pubs. I am told this place is the place where everyone wants to go. I Don know why?? Because the thing is they serve beer by the meter, what they actually mean is, they will serve you 14 halfs, which if you place the plastic cups next to each other will cover a meter. The beer is not great, not my preferred type of beer, it is most definitely a bit rough and ready, but it is cheap, depending what you have it is around €3 per half. I will not be rushing back
Julius Trujillo (Growth Marketing Manager)★★★★★
If you’re looking for the heart and soul of Toulouse nightlife, you have to check out Chez Tonton! 🍻 Located right on the buzzing Place Saint-Pierre, this legendary bar is a true institution—ask any local or university student, and they’ll tell you it’s a rite of passage to spend an evening (or two!) here. Chez Tonton is famous for its unbeatable atmosphere: the energy is always electric, especially when the terrace spills over with happy crowds. Whether you’re starting your night or looking for that perfect spot to celebrate with friends, this is the place to be. Their signature drink? The iconic “demi mètre de pastis”—a must-try for first-timers and a classic for regulars! 🥃 Prices are super student-friendly, which explains why it’s a favorite hangout for university students from all over Toulouse. The staff are quick, friendly, and always up for a laugh, even on the busiest nights. Plus, the location couldn’t be better—right in the heart of the action, steps from the Garonne, and surrounded by other great bars. If you want an authentic Toulouse experience, full of laughter, music, and unforgettable memories, Chez Tonton is the place to be. Don’t miss it! 🎉🍹
Elena Orlova★★★★★
Cheap and tasty! For 8 euro you can take a big dish and a beer
Eric Kirchmann★★★☆☆
Chez Tonton was recommended by our Airbnb hosts. It had a fun atmosphere and was packed. Do be aware that it is a bar for youngsters, the college crowd. My wife and I are middle aged and we seemed to be a decade or two too old! They told us they didn’t have any red wine!?! Hate to give it a low rating just because we aren’t the target audience. If I were still in college, it would be a 4 or a 5 star.
Andries Van den Berge★★★☆☆
Definitely overrated in my opinion. You can't take a plastic cup outside to have some air. Inside there is no cosy vibe whatsoever, only flashy white lights.

I had a couple of hard-to-find rums here. Their prices are very fair and it's amazing how big of a selection they have. They only have softdrinks, some beers and an amazing amount of different rums, as well as flavored house rum. I loved the vibe, the bartender was nice and helpful. Overall a great experience! We were here on a Sunday night and it wasn't busy at all except for one or two groups of people.

I love to have this delicious drink cocktail on the side of the street each time I'm in at Capitol Toulouse. I love this Rhumerie vibes, drinks, and services.

Great spot for live sports! The staff was so busy but the queues were fast. Good vibes and loved the big tree covering the terrace

A French idea of a German beer garden nicely decorated and lots of long tables to sit on. Come here in the summer it will be glorious.

I think this is the best German beer pub in Toulouse with open space in the back. The beers are good with a reasonable price. The staff is amazing and very helpful. A good place to hang out with your friends. Conveniently located very close to the metro station St. Michel.

The Biergarten is a very good place to Hangout with your friends and family. I'm a regular client, so I have a biased opinion. If you love beer, you will love it, they also serve other alcohol but I did not try it so I can't tell. Food is good for a bar and I can recommend to take the chips or bretzels while drinking, two good, with good quantity and cheap options. The best aspect of this bar is the atmosphere, everyone is friendly, its easy to meet people, events are great and the staff is great but you will deal with a lot of noise. I lived in Toulouse for 4 years now and it's my favorite bar.

Excellent experience, great beer, friendly service. The bavette was cooked perfectly and I complimented the chef. The only shame is that there isn't any real German food on offer except for Spätzle but it is prepared with cream which isn't usual. More German dishes would be great to see.

Tips for Enjoying Toulouse’s Bar Scene

To make the most of your evening in the Pink City, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The way Toulouse operates after dark is unique, blending the laid-back attitude of the South of France with the bustling energy of a major metropolitan hub. Understanding the timing, customs, and geography of the city will not only save you money but also help you blend in seamlessly with the locals. Here are five essential tips to elevate your bar-hopping experience in Toulouse.

1. Master the Art of the Aperitif
The French concept of "l’apéro" is sacred in Toulouse. Most bars open their doors in the late afternoon, but the prime time for locals is between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This is when you will find the best atmosphere for transitioning from work or sightseeing into the evening. Many establishments offer "happy hour" pricing during this window, making it the most economical time to try premium cocktails or regional wines before the late-night crowds arrive.

2. Explore Beyond Place du Capitole
While the main square is undeniably beautiful, the bars directly surrounding it often cater to tourists and come with inflated prices. To find the true soul of Toulouse nightlife, venture into the side streets of the Carmes district, the vibrant left bank of Saint-Cyprien, or the student-heavy area around Place Saint-Pierre. Walking just five minutes away from the main monuments will lead you to more authentic, affordable, and character-filled watering holes.

3. Understand the Terrace Culture
Toulousains are obsessed with outdoor seating, and the terrace is often more important than the interior decor. Even in the cooler months, bars will provide heat lamps and blankets to keep the outdoor culture alive. If you want to secure a seat on a popular terrace, especially on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night, you need to arrive early. Don’t hesitate to ask if a seat is free; the social culture here is generally warm and welcoming to newcomers.

4. Embrace Regional Drinks
While you can find a standard gin and tonic anywhere, the best way to drink like a local is to order regional specialties. Look for wines from the nearby Fronton or Gaillac appellations, which are rarely exported and offer incredible value. If you prefer beer, skip the international macros and ask for a local brew from a Toulouse-based microbrewery. For spirits, a glass of Armagnac—the older, more rustic cousin of Cognac from the Gascony region—is the perfect way to end a meal or a night out.

5. Plan Your Transport
Toulouse is a highly walkable city, and most of the bars on this list are within a 20-minute walk of each other in the city center. However, the metro stops running relatively early (around midnight on weekdays and later on weekends). If you are staying outside the center or plan to stay out very late, book a rideshare in advance or locate the night bus routes. Walking along the Garonne at night is beautiful, but having a transport plan ensures you can relax and enjoy the last call without stress.

The bar scene in Toulouse is more than just a collection of places to drink; it is a reflection of the city’s warm, sociable, and unpretentious character. Whether you spend your evening in a centuries-old cellar sipping a regional red or on a modern rooftop watching the sunset turn the brick facades to gold, the experience is guaranteed to be memorable. The key is to approach the night with a sense of curiosity and a willingness to wander.

As you explore the venues listed above, you will quickly discover that the "art de vivre" in Toulouse is best experienced with a glass in hand and good company. Don’t be afraid to ask the bartenders for their personal recommendations—they are often the best guides to the city’s hidden gems and late-night secrets. Cheers, or as they say in Occitan, Santé!
