15 Best Bakeries in Strasbourg

Strasbourg is a city that appeals to the eyes as much as the palate. While the half-timbered houses of Petite France and the towering cathedral often steal the spotlight, the city’s true soul can be found in the warm, flour-dusted interiors of its artisan bakeries. Here, the scent of butter, toasted almonds, and fresh yeast drifts into the cobblestone streets, inviting locals and visitors alike to slow down and savor a ritual that defines French culture.

Baking in Alsace is a distinct culinary tradition, separate from the Parisian standard. The region’s proximity to Germany and its unique history have created a hybrid baking style that favors rich doughs, spices, and generous fillings. In Strasbourg, a bakery is not just a place to grab a baguette; it is a cultural institution where generations of families have perfected recipes for kougelhopf, pretzels, and seasonal bredele cookies.

Finding the best bakeries in Strasbourg requires looking beyond the tourist-heavy squares. While the city is compact and walkable, the true gems are often tucked away on quiet side streets or within bustling neighborhood markets. These are the places where bakers still arrive before dawn to hand-shape loaves and where the display cases glisten with fruit tarts that look almost too beautiful to eat.

This guide focuses on quality, craftsmanship, and the authentic experience of eating like a local. You will find traditional institutions that have been operating for over a century alongside modern workshops where young bakers are redefining organic sourdough. Whether you are looking for a flaky croissant to start your morning or a dense, chewy rye bread to accompany a hearty Alsatian dinner, this list has you covered.

We have evaluated these establishments based on the quality of their ingredients, the mastery of their techniques, and their reputation among Strasbourg residents. We prioritize bakeries that bake on-site daily and those that contribute to the rich gastronomic identity of the city. Every entry on this list offers something unique, ensuring that your exploration of Strasbourg’s food scene is as varied as it is delicious.

From the perfect golden crust of a baguette tradition to the sweet, boozy bite of a rum baba, the standards here are exceptionally high. Prepare to walk a lot, because the best way to experience these bakeries is to visit them one by one, collecting a pastry here and a loaf there. Here are the bakeries that define the taste of Strasbourg.

The chocolate éclair was out of this world, and the smoked salmon, spinach, and cheese croissant was incredible. There’s limited seating, but both days we went, we managed to find a spot inside pretty quickly. We also tried the coffee éclair - it was great quality, though the chocolate one was definitely our favorite. The raspberry cupcake was just okay compared to everything else. They also have a cold, sugar-free hibiscus tea, which was really nice.
Cou Cou★★★★★
Very very popular and famous bakery for locals and tourists. There is always a long queue. Good organic breads ans cakes. It is a bit sad that we cannot buy half baguette as we always do in France. There is a very small space for eat in. So recommend to buy for takeaway.
Jessie W★★★★☆
Love this bakery. All the sweet and savoury goods are incredible and baked fresh. It’s hard to choose what to eat honestly. Also right in the centre on the pedestrian street, which makes it a great place to chill and people watch. I wish their coffee was better though as I was disappointed by it. It’s also machine coffee.
cird3rf★★★★☆
L'Atelier 116 They have different locations for this boulangerie. The selection of pastry that they have is amazing most especially the strawberry tart, it is so fresh and one of my favorites. There's a queue but it moves quickly. The drinks are mid for me but the taste is subjective. I had Iced Mocha for drink. You can also have an option to dine outside the street overlooking the city views of Strasbourg.
Parag Shinde★★★★★
If you do not have any particular choice, just have anything from L`atelier, and you will not be disappointed. Unfortunately there are only 3 chairs to sit inside, and 4 tables outside, so be prepared to carry away your food. There is almost always a line to enter, but it moves fast due to the super efficient service by the staff inside.

Its a small shop, but the food and ice cream was amazing and the staffwaere wonderful and kind. We had the ice cream (raspberry, mango, cookie and chocolate) and a chocolate croissant. The ice cream was made with real fruit! Highly recommend.
Arden★★★★★
Tried the pain au chocolat and almond cream croissant. The almond cream was not too sweet but very creamy/ a bit fluffy. The pain au chocolat was a bit sweeter than others I’ve had, but the chocolate is delicious and bitter sweet. It was very fresh. They were both well priced! The shop is beautiful too. Would recommend!

Visited by chance, variety of cakes and bakeries. We had a croissant and small Santa chocolate, both were delicious. the texture of the croissants was so tender and flaky.

Fantastic bakery. Friendly staff and great food!

I’ve ordered cakes on a few occasions, and they’ve always been delicious! Most recently, I ordered mignardises for a baby shower and I could not be happier with how everything turned out. Service was quick and professional, and the quality of was perfect. They were also gorgeous, and added the perfect touch to the festivities. Thank you!
Mykola Dovhal★★★★★
Delicious and affordable. Aromatic coffee. Fast service and very friendly staff.
Nicha Chang★★★★★
Just grab croissant framboise and coffee while waiting for my next train. The croissant tastes good, the raspberry sauce is sweet and sour. And the lady who served me is so nice. She also communicates well in English. 😊
K Kip (Kip)★★★★☆
This is my regular breakfast/brunch place as it's close by my hotel. So many sweet and savoury options to choose from. And the staff are so friendly and smiley. My favourite is the coppa et comte baguette 😋 I have to agree. The coffee is just awful.

If you are going here to buy sandwiches do not count on it too much. We came to try their famous sandwiches. But when we arrived on Thursday at 2 pm the choise was very poor and there were no sandwiches. We were really disappointed as we didn’t have time to go to another boulangerie to buy sandwiches before our train. Other bakery products were nice

So delicious. Vanilla slice and a piece of quiche. Yum. All looked delicious. There was a que when we arrived, now I know why.

The worst hot chocolate that I have drink. I just thought it would be great to have one in that patisserie but I wish I did not. Its did not taste like a chocolate. It smell different. I regret to pay money for awful drink. I also tried chocolate eclair and it was good this is why I give them 2 stars otherwise this place is 1 star for me. I dont recommend you to drink hot chocolate there but eat eclair. Its at the center.

Great spot! Tried the Choucroute—it was hearty and delicious. The local 1664 beer is really good, too
Alic★★★☆☆
We visited this bakery and ordered quite a few things , pizzas (or at least something that looked like pizza), filled baguettes with ham and cheese, with Feta and olives, croissants, and some sweet pastries plus coffee. Everything we tried was actually really tasty. We paid around 50 euros for everything. However, the experience was let down by the service. When we left, we realized that one of the items — Brezel was missing. So we went back inside to ask for it. It turned out it was still sitting behind the cashier, already packed, but they wouldn’t just hand it to us. Instead, they told us we had to wait in line again to get it. Honestly, mistakes happen and that’s totally fine. But making us queue again for something they forgot to give us felt rude and unprofessional! A simple apology and handing us the item would have made all the difference. So while the food was great, the service really took away from the overall experience

Excellent and not overpriced. Really innovative flavours with the beautifully constructed cakes. Drinks were also pushing the boundaries and explored new flavours - highly recommend their pistachio espresso latte! On top of this, lovely service. Recommended!

A nice small and warm café. Their service is good and had a financier au noisette that was amazing. The prices are okay. Totally recommend it. (It was a bit busy so we had to wait few moments to have a sit and they close at 6pm.)

Absolutely amazing 👌🏻 The pastries are excellent and a very important point is that they’re not overly sweet. You can taste the real flavors without everything being lost in sugar. The sandwiches are fantastic as well, and the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended 🚀

This is the best bakery in Strasbourg for me. Even we have the same shop on centre, this bakery is the best. You can get very warm quality baguette. Very local place and quiet. Friendly staffs.
Kendall Ruber★★★★★
Absolutely loved both pastries I got here! I ordered the strawberry croissant and the sable aux fruits. The sable aux fruits is probably the best pastry I’ve ever had - the cream was so good. I’ll be thinking about this place for years to come!

This bakery in Strasberg, France is one of the best for good breakfast sandwiches 🥪 very fresh bread 🥖 & ingredients such as cheese 🧀 is very tasty 😋. Prices is very reasonable, always crowded & busy this is where delicious food you can find 👍👍👍

This is one small hidden best confectionery and bakery one cannot miss. To me it's Micheline standard for bakery. Absolutely love the raspberry tart. How I wish I can buy a whole box of it and not worry it will spoilt back home. That's how good it is. It's unmatchable for its cakes and tarts. Totally 10 /10

The best eclairs we tried in the area! My personal recommendation is the pistachio raspberry ones! They are quite filling and sweet though, so start with one for 2 to share.

This is a very clean patisserie and bakery. The Crookie caught my eye, so I gave it a try. It's a croissant with a chocolate chip cookie baked into it. It was warm and the chocolate was melted a little. The inside of the croissant was a little creamy and soft cookie dough. The young woman at the counter was so nice and friendly. She was adorable and helpful. She is a real asset to the company. There are two counter seats by the window. The decor was cute and on point. There were many other options that looked delicious.
Arden★★★★★
Incredible pastry selection here - we have only tried pain au chocolate and cheese pretzel. The pain au chocolat was super tasty, not very flaky, and fresh. The pain brownie and cookie are more unusual and sweet and I would go back to try those!
Anna★★★★★
We visited this bakery this morning and had a lovely experience! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Plus, they had a discount for students! We tried the pain au chocolat and it was delicious.

Nice bakery in Strasbourg Decent viennoiseries They also make funny original ones .i didn’t try those , as they seem very sugary. Nice cakes . Recommended

We tried the pain au chocolat, the bijoux, and the pistacchio roll- all three were absolutely delicious !!! Incredibly fresh, and clearly use great quality ingredients. The pain au chocolat’s chocolate was flavourful and fruity. The pistacchio roll had so much pistacchio cream inside. And very friendly staff member. Highly recommend !!!

It’s precisely this café that’s hidden from tourists, which is great because it means the place is reserved for locals)) It’s wonderful that “JauneCitron” has opened its second café on the main tourist street, so tourists can enjoy these divine desserts too. This JauneCitron is really tiny: it’s impossible to sit there as a large group. The tables seat two people maximum, but it’s so charming: you can escape from it all to savor French desserts. There’s often a line, but it moves very quickly, and you’ll be welcomed with warmth and a smile. The desserts will leave no one indifferent, and you’ll definitely want to come back. And if you try your luck first thing in the morning and sample the pastries, your heart will be won over forever.
Pongii★★★★★
Such a beautiful and charming pastry shop! Every dessert is beautifully crafted and almost too pretty to eat. The cozy atmosphere makes it a lovely place to relax and enjoy a sweet treat. Definitely one of the best pastry shops in Strasbourg.
Sabina Creciun★★★★★
I visited this cafe just once, but I was really delighted! The atmosphere is cute and cozy, and even though it’s a small space, it’s very comfortable. I also took some cookies to go, and they were absolutely delicious!
Cou Cou★★★★★
Very creative and fun Patisserie. There are some taste of Mediterranean (?) or foreign taste and well. As it is pretty small place for eat in, it may be easier to buy for takeaway. If you are lucky, you can find a place to stay and eat cakes and nice unique drinks.
ChunkyCherry★★★★★
This place is craaaazy good. I love pastries and desserts but I rarely indulge, yet this place caught my attention. We tried three different cakes and all three were absolutely wonderful. We first had the lemon cake which was so wonderfully intense. Had a super nice lemon flavor which just bursted in your mouth. So nice. Then we had the chocolate cake which was also quite intense, yet it was overshadowed by the winner which was the peanut variant. My gosh that was one of the best cakes I’ve ever had, absolutely insane how intense and flavorful it was. It’s worth driving to Strasbourg solely for this, super nice. Very nice service as well, we didn’t speak French and it was not a problem at all.

Amazingly delicious with a ton of choices. We had a strawberry Mille-feuille and strawberry tart. The Mille-feuille was so crispy and the vanilla bean fresh and delicious. Just the right amount of sweetness and not overpowering. The place was packed after we grabbed a seat- we were lucky as there were only three small tables. Wish we had room to have the foie gras pastry. 100 percent recommend!
TC Chao★★★☆☆
Sells both sweet and savory pastries. The sweet ones we bought were great and not too sweet, the quiche was a bit too salty for us though. One of the staff will take your order and give you the receipt, then you pay at the end and then get your order. Unfortunately in this case I've bought and paid for few items including 2 madeleines but when we got back to the hotel and check the bag there was no madeleine in the bag, which is quite disappointing as they don't open the next two days and we are leaving the day after.
Hiep Huynh★★★★★
It's a very popular pastry shop in Strasbourg, very close to the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Luckily I came here a little bit before 12pm so it wasn't too crowded. So much good stuff to try. They have sandwiches, mini pizzas, chocolate, croissants. Quick friendly staff. There are only 2-3 very small bar-height tables so don't expect to sit and eat here.
Aurelie★★★★★
We often find ourselves stopping in front of the display window first, simply because we’re dazzled by the beautiful colors and the variety on offer. Everything looks so tempting that it’s genuinely hard to decide what to choose. The salads are delicious, the sandwiches are excellent, and the pastries are wonderful. My daughter absolutely loves the macarons, while my son prefers the classics like éclairs. As for me, I enjoy everything — even the savory items are outstanding. The overall quality of the products is truly impressive. The shop itself is a bit small, and sometimes it’s difficult to take the time to look at everything because it can get very crowded. The staff is clearly very busy, which is understandable, and they do their best to remain polite and professional. On occasion, a warmer smile would make the experience even more pleasant, but their efficiency is appreciated. Despite the hustle and bustle, this place remains a fantastic spot for high-quality food and pastries. A colorful, lively address that definitely deserves a visit if you enjoy fresh and delicious products
Aybeliz İlayda Karakoç★★★★★
I can’t stop thinking about the raspberry beignet! The staff are very friendly and the pastries are really fresh. If you’re a backpacker, you can sit inside and use the outlet to charge your phone. However, there’s no Wi-Fi or restroom.

This bakery has become our best discovery in Strasbourg. A truly special place where Ukrainian owners have brought their own unique touch and flavors to France. You can find incredibly delicious traditional Ukrainian treats here: homemade pastries, medovik and Napoleon cakes that literally melt in your mouth, as well as frozen homemade dishes like cutlets, syrnyky, and vareniki. The Kyiv-style chicken cutlets are absolutely amazing! But my personal favorite is the bagels - they are simply outstanding. Whether with salmon or chicken, I honestly couldn’t decide which one was better, so the best choice is to try both! The cappuccino is also excellent. A wonderful place with great food, a warm atmosphere, and a lot of passion behind it. Wishing the team continued success - this place truly deserves it!

This was our first breakfast in Strasbourg, and we were lucky to choose the right café straight away. The wide selection of pastries was impressive. Even our two picky teenagers found something they loved—a strawberry croissant and a cheese-and-berry pastry. My husband enjoyed the ham-filled triangle pastry, and I was especially happy to find a vegetarian baguette with mozzarella, zucchini, and eggplant. I absolutely love those vegetables, and it’s not something you often find for breakfast. The young woman at the counter, Paulina, provided quick, friendly service and made sure she understood exactly what we wanted. I really appreciated her kindness and attention. The coffee was excellent, the bread was fresh, and all the pastries were delicious. My only regret is that we didn’t buy some of the tempting little cakes to take with us for the road. I wish this lovely café many happy and hungry customers.
Polina Vasilyeva★★★★★
Highest level of service: very tasty, clean and neat! Wonderful place! Fluffy airy croissants, variety of pastries. Very friendly, kind and patient owners! Very beautiful place!

You can tell where to get great pastries and sandwiches by the line out the door. Still not that long of a wait, and you'll be glad you did. We got the giant stuffed croissants during our last day in Strasbourg. Amazing! 😋
Zuzanna Gad★★★★★
The people working there are so awesome! So nice and friendly, very helpful but also funny! Going to this place I didn’t know how this little of a journey could make my day so nice! I have already tried a few bakeries in Strasbourg but this one definitely is the best one I’ve ever been to. Everything looks and tastes like heaven on earth! Especially the beautiful croissants stole my heart. And you really see that the people lead this cute boulangerie with their whole heart and engagement! Would totally recommend everyone to go there and see for themselves!!!

I visited several times during my stay in the city. It was a paradise for celiacs , as I was able to try traditional pastries completely gluten-free. Everything was delicious and highly recommended. Most of the items didn’t even make it to the photo because I ate them too quickly! I would definitely recommend this place.
Rachel McClay★★★★★
Everything we tried was delicious. Finding a 100% gluten-free bakery was a amazing surprise on our trip. We stopped in three times in two days to try different items. The pizza and eclairs were delicious in the shop. We also picked up baguettes and a lemon tart and chocolate macaron to enjoy later. The staff were all very nice and helpful during every interaction.
Jaspreet Kaur★★★★★
The cafe is 100% gluten free and has amazing options . I tried 3 of them and all of them were very tasty. My favourite was the dessert .
Lisa★★★★★
This is the best gluten free bakery probably in whole Europe. Everything just tastes amazing. The pastries taste like normal ones, without telling you wouldn't guess they are gluten free! And the sandwiches they sell are also so delicious even my non celiac boyfriend liked them a lot. If you're a celiac and within an 1 hours radius this is a must visit!
Jaycen Cruickshank★★★★★
I have Coeliac so this superb place was perfect for travel. Very popular, great service. The quality of the gluten free food was magnificent. Three visits to have eat in/take home for dinner later. Pizzas, magnificent. Quiche, superb, the cheesecakes and cakes and baguettes, so tasty. The staff so friendly and helpful thanks. You will regret not trying this, don’t miss it. We enjoyed the pizza later at home with salad and Chablis, during the very hot weather 😎😁

We bought bread for breakfast for 2 days in a row here when we were in Strasbourg last Christmas. All of them were very fresh and so delicious. I could have their croissants everyday. I wish all local bakeries are like this one. Prices are very reasonable too. The staff were also very helpful and understanding even though I spoke no French aside from „Bonjour!“ and „Merci!“
Thanasis Melis★★★★★
Greatest bakery in Strasbourg! Great quality in everything we've tried e.g. baguette, kugelhopf, sandwich, raisin bread, croissants pain au Chocolat etc. We've also tried some desserts, they all had great ingredients. I suggest visiting as early as possible in the day. The later you visit the less choices you'll have as there are lots of customers.

So this is a super cool bakery I visited last week. I was visiting a friend and wanted to take some small dessert for that. I took Trio-Chocolat and i have to say that it is one of the best Trio-Chocolat i ever had. It was very very light to eat which makes it super enjoyable. The staff are very very polite and they speak English too. I am sure that i will visit this place more frequently from now on.

Omg the pastries here were amazing. We tried a few pastry shops while in strasbourg and none of them compared to this one. I regret not coming here everyday. Everything was so good and buttery and fresh. It is very small, they only allow 3 in at a time so don’t be alarmed if you see a little line. The lady working was very kind. I will continue to dream about these pastries.

Tips for Enjoying Strasbourg’s Bakery Scene

To truly appreciate the quality of Strasbourg’s baking, it helps to understand a few local customs and practical details. Navigating the city’s bakery culture is easy if you know when to go and what to order, but a little insider knowledge can elevate a simple snack into an unforgettable culinary memory. Here are five essential tips to help you make the most of your bakery tour.

1. Learn the Local Lingo for Pastries
While you can find standard croissants everywhere, ordering Alsatian specialties will give you a more authentic experience. Ask for a kougelhopf (a yeasted bundt cake with raisins and almonds), a tarte flambée style twist, or a bretzel (the Alsatian spelling of pretzel). During the winter months, look for bredele (spiced Christmas cookies) and mannala (brioche shaped like a little man).

2. Distinguish Between Boulangerie and Pâtisserie
In France, the terminology matters. A boulangerie focuses primarily on bread and viennoiserie (croissants, pain au chocolat), while a pâtisserie specializes in elegant cakes, tarts, and chocolates. Many of the best spots in Strasbourg are combination shops, but knowing the difference helps you manage expectations. If you want a savory lunch, look for a boulangerie that advertises restauration rapide or sandwiches.

3. Time Your Visit to Match the Baking Schedule
Bread is baked throughout the day in France, but the first batch usually comes out between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM. If you want a warm baguette or croissant, go early. However, if you are seeking afternoon treats like choux pastries or elaborate tarts, visit after 3:00 PM when the display cases have been restocked following the lunch rush.

4. Bring Cash for Small Purchases
While most established bakeries in Strasbourg accept credit cards and contactless payment, some of the smaller, old-school neighborhood shops still prefer cash for purchases under five euros. Carrying a few coins not only speeds up the line but also ensures you won’t miss out on a spontaneous treat at a market stall or a tiny family-run shop.

5. Don’t Skip the Savory Options
Tourists often focus solely on sweets, but Alsatian bakeries excel at savory items too. Look for flammekueche slices, cheese-topped rolls, or bretzels with melted gruyère. These make for an inexpensive and delicious lunch that allows you to keep exploring the city without sitting down for a long meal.

Strasbourg’s bakeries are more than just pit stops; they are essential stops on any cultural itinerary. The craftsmanship found in these shops reflects a deep respect for tradition, yet there is also a vibrant spirit of innovation that keeps the scene exciting for repeat visitors. Whether you are biting into a crusty baguette by the Ill River or savoring a delicate fruit tart in a quiet café, the flavors of Strasbourg’s ovens will linger in your memory long after you have returned home.

As you wander through the city, let your nose guide you and don’t be afraid to step into a bakery that wasn’t on your list. Part of the joy of visiting Strasbourg is the discovery—the unplanned moment when you find a tiny shop with a line out the door and a baker pulling a tray of golden pastries from the oven. That is where the true magic of Alsatian baking lives.
