12 Best Cheap Hotels in Carcassonne

Finding a comfortable place to stay in Carcassonne does not have to drain your travel budget. While the medieval citadel looks like a scene from a fairy tale, the reality is that you can experience its magic without paying royal prices. The key is knowing where to look, as the city offers a surprising range of budget-friendly accommodations that prioritize comfort, cleanliness, and location.

Many travelers assume that staying directly inside the fortified walls of La Cité is exclusively for luxury seekers. However, the area directly surrounding the fortress, as well as the vibrant Bastide Saint-Louis (the lower town), is packed with affordable hotels that offer excellent value. By choosing a cheaper hotel, you free up your budget for what really matters—sampling the local cassoulet, touring the Château Comtal, and enjoying the local Corbières wine.

The definition of "cheap" can vary, but in Carcassonne, it generally translates to clean, functional rooms with private bathrooms and strong guest reviews for under €80 a night. These properties often trade sprawling lobbies and 24-hour room service for authentic hospitality and unbeatable locations. You will find that many are family-run establishments where the owners take immense pride in helping you navigate their city.

When selecting a budget hotel, proximity to transportation is a major factor. If you are arriving by train, staying in the lower town near the Canal du Midi or the train station can save you taxi fares. Conversely, if you are driving, you will want a hotel with free or low-cost parking, which is often easier to find slightly outside the medieval core.

This guide focuses on reliability. We have filtered through the noise to find accommodations that consistently receive high marks for hygiene, service, and location, ensuring that "cheap" means "great value" rather than "low quality." Whether you are a solo backpacker, a couple on a road trip, or a family looking to save a few euros, there is a spot here for you.

Below is a curated list of the best budget-friendly stays in the region, ranging from charming guesthouses to efficient modern hotels.

If you need decent accommodation and the best value for your money look no further, this is it. 15 min walk to city center and old castle. Private parking, good breakfast and clean rooms. Also pretty quiet. Best of all is the service in the hotel that is very friendly and helpful. Very recommendable!!

This is a great budget hotel with absolutely zero frills. It’s perfectly fine for an overnight stay but not ideal if you want to be closer to the historic centre on foot or if you’re used to having a bit more space in your hotel room or a hotel lounge/bar area. Breakfast was really good, the staff were helpful and polite and I enjoyed my time there.
Christopher Percy★★★★★
Does what it says on the tin. Staff are fantastic. Breakfast OK but no hot food ( continental) basic and clean but not really many amenities in close proximity

First, the shower was clogged. So the bathroom has been quickly flooded. Then, the AC was noisy. But the worst, one of the towel smells weird. A really peculiar smell that I well know. The towel smells cat's pee!! I have a pretty good nose, I'm sure that's it! What's the heck ? At the end, in the morning, the coffee machine had a bug and I lost several minutes to ask a decent coffee to the receptionist.

Nice place! Free parking and only five minutes away from the fort by car. The service was chill, and the breakfast was quiet and amazing. The room was nice, with a beautiful bathroom. I booked a room for three people, but the bunk bed wasn’t arranged,my brother set it up himself before sleeping. I had a great time at the hotel! At night, we heard some footsteps in the corridor, maybe other guests walking around, but the hotel could use some soundproof walls. 🙂‍↕️ Still, I was exhausted after visiting the Carcassonne fort, so I fell asleep easily. Overall, I had a really good time there! 👍🏽🔥🔥💯

Budget accomodation - small rooms, reasonable sized bed with a good firm mattress. The room was spotlessly clean. Location is strangley not signposted, but easy enough to find. Breakfast can be had at the establishment, but for an evening meal you need to dine out. There are at least 6 restaurants within 15 minutes walk. Dogs allowed in rooms (€6) but not breakfast room. The lady who was in reception (evening 7th Oct) was lovely and friendly. Grounds were clean. No noise from main road nearby. The aircon in our room blew hot air out when set at max cooling? Small shower room, but functionnel. Not for a holiday, but business or 2 or 3 night budget stop quite acceptable.

Cheap, clean and good staff Close to airport and amenities.

Giving an extra star. It's a typical motel. I booked it for overnight stay easy access for airport and it worked fine. There is automatic check in system pretty self explanatory. Dispite all the negative comments it's cheap and fit 2people in one for and toilets are teeny tiny to take a shower. Breakfast is just ok.

Great hotel for a stopover for visiting Carcassonne. Simple, yet you have everything you need. The breakfast is great given the price, just fresh fruits and vegetables are missing (but that's expected).

Friendly and very helpful hosts. The place is a little difficult to find for a start but worth the effort. Rooms are clean and comfortable with good showers. There is no aircon but they do have fans in the rooms . Nice breakfast with plenty of choice.

A perfect hotel for an overnight stop. The rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable and good value. The staff are very helpful and a convenient location for access to the motorway.

An excellent two nights spent here - a pity I couldn't stay longer. You'll be assured of the warmest of welcomes. I've just had two extremely comfortable nights' sleep [May 2016] in wonderfully quiet surroundings. A good-sized bathroom, bags of hot water delivered with excellent pressure for showering. WiFi signal is great. Best of all, the delicious breakfast : fresh-baked still-warm rolls, pastries, and the best croissants I've had for decades : not forgetting yoghurts, cheese, meats, hard-boiled eggs, jams, fruit juices etc. etc. A great start to the day. Here is a husband and wide team running a great little hotel in a super location. Try it : I can't see how you'd be disappointed. Carcassonne awaits you just 4 or 5 minutes' drive away, straight down the road in front of the Audotel.

Very good traditional option close to the trains station ( 5 minute walk). A plus that the toilet has a seat, which many hotels in the area have not. A bus during the day takes you up to the old walled city. Taxis are more difficult during the night.

Large room, fridge and kettle, 1st floor noisy early in the morning. Close to station and bus for airport. Short walk to centre of town

This little hotel is right in the center of Carcassonne only a short walk from the train station. The staff are friendly and helpful and the hotel is clean and pleasant. Buffet style breakfast is also available and is good, similar to many other hotels. We had a pleasant stay there.
Dominic Carpin★★★★★
I loved my stay at this hotel. Very convenient to the train station, restaurants and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne (a place I highly recommend you visit. It's free). The buffet style breakfast is excellent. I had it every morning. Lots of great ethnic restaurants nearby including a good Moroccan place. It's a 30 minute walk from the medieval city. I used that to my advantage (getting my steps in). My room was a family room with a double and single bed. Very spacious with a separate toilet and bathroom. It was like a suite (and had a walk-in door less closet). The air conditioning really cranks compared to most I've used in Europe. Very handy because when I visited we were under orange to red heat alerts. Front desk staff was very friendly and forgiving about my lack of command of the French language. Nice little elevator if you don't want to take the stairs. Highly recommended.

Happy to find this hotel at a reasonable rate. The receptionist people (evening and morning) were very pleasant and responsive. The fellow in the evening spoke Spanish as a second language so that was our language of communication. The woman in the morning made me comfortable with my French, which I appreciated. They both knew enough English if that would be your only language. The room was modest, but very clean with a spotless bathroom. The beds were oddly saggy (I think because of an inadequate or nonexistent box spring), but firm and we slept well. Very quiet place, perfect for sleeping. The morning coffee was good, but we are not fans of the typical French (and Spanish/Andorra) breakfast buffet so we skipped it.
Jacques★★★★★
Very good quality/price hotel. We slept very well and the room had everything we need. It was great to have a small terrace and access to the garden for our dog. And having a free parking was great.
Richard Wagstaff★★★★★
Standard tourist hotel. It is the staff that made our stay excellent - very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice and locally produced jams. The hotel is about 1.5 km from the castle and about 2.5 km from the city centre. For those with electric vehicles, there is a fast public EV charger less than 1 km from the hotel on an adjacent BMW forecourt. Would certainly recommend this hotel for friends and family looking for a stay in Carcassonne.
Robert Gray★★★★☆
A great hotel for a short stay to visit Carcassonne (france) It is a 3star hotel with 5 star Manager and staff evening meals were good Its only drawback is its light industrial location. But would definitely recommend for1/2 days.
SB★★☆☆☆
Well this is more like a 'motel' than a hotel. Something akin to an American movie hotel. The bedroom was somewhat basic and the bathroom even more so, both in urgent need of an update. Aside from the cockroach in the reception area at the start of the stay no other insects were seen. Be prepared at breakfast to be zealously watched over by a member of staff which is somewhat off putting when all you want a quiet meal first thing in the morning. Otherwise if you are a good walker you can walk to the the medieval castle walls within 40 minutes. Other than fast food outlets there are no 'real' restaurants nearby to eat at in the evening. 50/50 rating for the staff, seems they ether are in customer service mode when they feel like it or simply unhelpfully. Pleasant when in full swing, brisk when not. Best of luck....

The hotel is close to the airport, but accessible from airport Only if you walk. In general is Only accessable by car. No public transport, no Uber, no Bolt after 20:00h up to 6:00 in the morning. I had to wait for a taxi 20-30 min after 6 h. In general is a "no-go area".

Very dirty, the sink smells mold. The AC is blowing into the sink, so the smell of mold spreads all over the room. Dirty stains on the walls, floor, and some brown goo in the corners. We left the hotel 1 day before scheduled checkout because we couldn't take it anymore.
Neuza Carrola★★★★★
It was a great place for a rest after a long journey, for the price I couldn't recommend it more.
Bobby Chiviyski★★☆☆☆
Ok you get what you paid for 😂 kind staff members, but the room itself had a constant strange noise when using the heating system, the shower reeked, if you sleep in a room for three, all the bunk bed gives you is a little blanket with no appropriate cover. However, besides the bad smelling shower it was clean but could do with bigger towels

We had a great stay here. Great location and great staff on reception. Reception also sells wine by the bottle and it's super cold! Its important to remember you are booking an apartment, this is not a hotel. That was great for us, a fridge etc, well equipped kitchen, not that we really ate in. It is showing signs of needing some refurbishment, but not end of the world material. I would happily stay here again and also happy to recommend it. Thanks!

Staff are rude and don’t speak English - make you pay for basic things like towels - also wi fi is absolutely terrible (when it’s on). Too far from town centre.

Our experience was not that good as our room didn't have Wi-Fi, our room was too far away from reception. We ran out of paper toilet and because it was a 2 days staying we didn't have cleaning to put more. Apartment is 30-40min away WALKING from town center, but almost an hour from the cité of carcassonne. Putting all that aside, apartment has all the utilities you may need for the kitchen. They even have soap and sponge, which is good

A bit rough around the edges, our toilet wasn’t fixed to the floor but was propped up with timber boards, rooms were clean and beds comfortable. Owners got a bit shorty at breakfast making comments on how much we had eaten, all paid for on check in, but we had a big day ahead of us, i dont want to feel Im being judged by how many croissants i eat at 8am, very un professional. Left feeling like we had made a bad choice but actually the place itself was fine. 5 minutes walk to the train station across the canal
Ann McLean★★★★★
A big thank you to the receptionist (owner?) at this hotel. Our friend's train was cancelled yesterday with the terrible storm Nils and at 8.30 am they gave him a room for the day and that night so he had a place to stay while waiting for an available train. As there was no way to know when he could get a train, having this flexibility was a huge bonus. Very reasonable price (just over 50 euros) for over 24 hours as he can't leave until this afternoon, he has been made very welcome to sit in the lounge while waiting for that train. The room was basic but exceptionally clean, breakfast at 10 euros was also good. Fantastic service and a very friendly and kind welcome. Only a couple of hundred meters walk from the centre and the train station, so a fantastic find.
Stephen★★★★★
An absolutely lovely hotel , super friendly staff and a super comfy bed, a very tasty breakfast buffet full of fresh produce , great location right by the canal and 3 mins walk from the train station. I will definitely be back , merci to all
Mark Antrobus★★★★☆
Great location (especially if you are travelling by train) being 5 minutes from loads of bars & restaurants and around 20 to the old city. We were able to check in at midday, the room was basic, but clean. Didn't have breakfast as departed early. Good budget choice.

Fantastic, wonderful, family run hotel, Sabrina met us at check in (was able to do early check in ) the room is good size, great bed bathroom very nice, hot water pot and good internet. We didn't use the TV but it was there. Heat was working well and needed. It's on a side street so quiet. We walked from train station in 5 minutes. Sabrina had tourist maps in Spanish, English and French. And explained what to do how to get there. Breakfast was very good as well and worth the additional cost. We felt that the hotel was a good value and was very clean as well. Book direct with them on their website to save then paying commission. We were glad we found them.

Hotel is perfectly adequate for the price. The location however is absolutely terrible if don't have a car. The nearest bus stop is 2km away and you have to walk next to a really busy street without a sidewalk. Ther are also no busses after 8pm. So of you want to have a long evening in the city, you would have to walk around 6km next to the same street (pictures includet)

I'll try to be pragmatic in my review. We know this is the most basic type of hotel (shared shower and toilet facilities are standard, so I'm not basing my rating on that). However, I was disappointed by the cleanliness of the bedding, the non-working TV, the fact that none of the electrical outlets in the room worked, and the lack of provided bath towels. I don't know if we could buy any at the hotel, as they weren't offered (we had to go to the shopping center to buy some). There was also no toilet paper or soap in the shower. I've stayed in a similar budget hotel from a competing chain before and didn't encounter these issues. I don't remember if the lack of air conditioning was mentioned, so I won't base my rating on that either. For the price, it's acceptable. The receptionist was very friendly, and the location is excellent, close to the highway and shopping centers by car. The city center is also easily accessible by car. The location is very quiet. The coffee machine was useful in the morning and worked well, but it only took coins. I had to arrive before 9 pm because the automatic coffee machine was out of order. So I'm giving it 3 stars, solely because of the cleanliness of the bedding, the broken appliances, and the lack of basic amenities.
Bastien Roupert★☆☆☆☆
Don't go there! 37 euros, I wasn't expecting much, but this was outrageous! In the worst possible way, obviously. We arrived at 1 p.m., stayed for 20 minutes just to assess the damage: a white stain on the bed, shared toilets with puddles of urine (we were probably the only ones in the hotel because the parking lot was empty and located next to a highway), trash everywhere under the windows, and shared showers that cost extra (and this wasn't mentioned in the advertisement!). Anyway, after eating out, we decided to cancel our stay. When we returned the key card, the receptionist confirmed that we wouldn't be reimbursed since, according to her, we had "used" the room. When we showed her the white stains on the duvet, she had the nerve to say that the hotel isn't responsible for cleaning the sheets! (But I thought they were the ones who put them on the bed). When we mentioned the puddles of urine on the floor, she told us she couldn't walk past every single person (I remind you that we were probably alone). Especially since several toilets were dirty! I advise you to go somewhere else!

Room and shower was really tiny but relatively clean. Receptionist asks us not to let the door close by itself as it was disturbing someone who couldn’t sleep and changed rooms a few times. One of the receptionist, Victoria did not tell us that the nearby car park would close at night and we didn’t know that there was a code to use to enter the car park when we were checking in. She did tell us to park nearby which we appreciated. Anyway imagine having to reverse a 9 seater Renault traffic out from an underground car park, highly stressful! I hope that this info can be provided to future guests who drive!

Worst Accor stay as Diamond. Unfriendly check-in by Victoria. Room had flickering light, blown wall light, defective switch (I have photos and videos). Floors dirty on arrival. Victoria said "sensitive" switch, deal with it. Julie and Veronique were great and fixed the lights, but repair mess was left on the table. Pros: Veronique was friendly and let us use their fridge. Will never come back and will tell friends to avoid. 1/5.

Excellent location sat between the town and the fort, staff were very friendly and helpful, would recommend as a base to see the town.
David Newman★★★★☆
Friendly staff who were help giving advice about the town. Short work to the ancient bridge leading to the walk to the Castle. The rooms were fine. The double bed was made of two separate mattresses. The shower whilst spacious once inside had a narrower entry space due to hinge restrictions so not ideal the larger traveller. Good variety of local food at breakfast. Would use again if in area.

Close to the Medieval city, about a 15/20 min walk, secure parking, breakfast was good, has a pool. Staff and communication were excellent, late checkout was only 9 Euros. Room was tired, looks like an old residential building complex rather than a hotel, not as good as the pictures unfortunately.

A pleasant place to stay in Carcassonne, ideally located in the city center. The staff are very friendly and the housekeeping is impeccable. The hotel residence has a lovely swimming pool open daily. An excellent choice for a stay in this magnificent city of Carcassonne.

Too far from the city centre. No buses. Some streets completely dark at night. The owner is friendly but communication just in French. Didn't answer calls and check in just after 17:30 so I had to wait 1h outside with no bench nor anywhere to sit. It's a house, not a hostel or hotel.

It is 2.5km from center. No busses. Room is spacious and nearly clean (except some dog hair in bed). Ventilator in the room. One bathroom for everybody. I couldn't use it in the morning because it was occupied the 30 min I had time to leave. The houselady was friendly, but communication was just possible in French. No englisch. Also bag drop before exploring Carcassonne not possible! Check in after 5.30 pm.
Chris Cord★☆☆☆☆
Zero service, appalling welcome, extremely unfriendly staff, shared bathrooms, tiny shower, no attempt at aesthetics in the room, no breakfast, not even a bottle of water. The air conditioning is in the hallway, so to use it, you have to sleep with the door open! We arrived at 10:30 PM, and at 10:30 AM, she asked us to leave, started cleaning very early, making as much noise as possible to wake us up, and can't tolerate negative feedback... In short, aggressive and rude... Don't go there!!!
Christine Leurquin★☆☆☆☆
No welcome whatsoever, not what you'd expect from a bed and breakfast. The room opened onto a landing where the entrance to another room was located. So, absolutely no privacy. The shared bathroom was full of cleaning products, hidden behind a curtain. The bathroom cabinet was full of personal items. The shower drain was clogged. Breakfast was served in the room on a plastic-covered table. No access to a terrace or any outdoor space. We felt like we were living in his private space. In the bedroom closet... the host's clothes. In short, we had booked two nights... and we rushed out the next day without having breakfast.
Murielle Jamin★★☆☆☆
The room was located far from the city center, and the welcome was a bit abrupt after a 70km bike ride in 40-degree heat. The air conditioning unit was in the hallway and noisy. We had to leave quickly the next day, so it was very disappointing. On the plus side, the lady agreed to let us charge one of our two bikes.

Essential Tips for Booking Cheap Hotels in Carcassonne

Finding the right room at the right price requires a bit of local knowledge and timing. The city experiences significant seasonal fluctuations, with prices peaking during the summer months and the famous July 14th fireworks display. To help you secure the best possible deal without sacrificing comfort, consider the following strategies used by savvy travelers.

  1. Travel in the Shoulder Season: The best time to visit Carcassonne for budget travelers is during May, June, September, or October. The weather is still pleasant for exploring the ramparts, but the crowds are thinner and hotel rates can be 20% to 30% lower than in July and August.
  2. Compare Bastide vs. La Cité: While sleeping inside the medieval walls is magical, it often comes with a premium price tag. Staying in the Bastide Saint-Louis (the lower town) is almost always cheaper, offers more dining options for locals, and is just a pleasant 20-minute walk or a short bus ride away from the fortress.
  3. Factor in Parking Costs: If you are on a road trip through the South of France, do not be seduced by a €10 cheaper room if it costs €15 a day to park. Many budget hotels outside the city center offer free private parking, which can save you a significant amount of money and stress.
  4. Check for Breakfast Inclusions: French breakfasts at cafes can add up, especially for families. When comparing prices, check if the hotel offers a free or low-cost continental breakfast. Sometimes paying €5 more for a room that includes breakfast is cheaper than buying it separately for two people.
  5. Look for Canal-Side Locations: Hotels located near the Canal du Midi often offer the best value. Not only are the views beautiful and the atmosphere quiet, but these locations are often equidistant between the train station and the medieval city, giving you the best of both worlds without the highest price tag.
  6. Book Direct for Perks: Once you have used comparison sites to find your ideal hotel, check the hotel’s official website. Many independent, family-run hotels in Carcassonne offer discounts, free upgrades, or a complimentary drink if you book directly with them rather than through a third-party aggregator.

Carcassonne is a destination that rewards the curious traveler, and that includes those who take the time to research where they sleep. A budget hotel here rarely feels like a compromise; instead, it often provides a more authentic, personal experience than some of the larger, pricier establishments.

By choosing one of the affordable options listed above, you ensure that your trip is defined by the breathtaking views of the turreted skyline and the taste of local cuisine, rather than by the size of your hotel bill. Enjoy your journey through the heart of the Languedoc region.
