Finding a pharmacy in the heart of Gijón is rarely a difficult task, but knowing exactly which one is open, where it is located, and what specific services it offers can save you valuable time when you are not feeling your best. The city centre is densely packed with well-stocked farmacias, each serving the needs of residents and the constant flow of visitors exploring the Asturian coast. Whether you are dealing with a sudden headache, a forgotten toiletry, or a need for specialized baby care, the central grid of streets provides a safety net of professional healthcare.
Navigating the Spanish pharmacy system is straightforward once you understand the layout. In the centre, you are never more than a few minutes’ walk from a green cross sign. However, the distinction between standard hours and "Farmacia de Guardia" (on-duty pharmacies) is crucial for late-night or Sunday emergencies. This guide focuses on the core pedestrian zones and main thoroughfares, ensuring you can access medication quickly without needing to venture into the outskirts.
The pharmacies in this area generally offer a high standard of care, with many pharmacists speaking at least basic English to assist tourists and international students. They are authorized to dispense both over-the-counter remedies and prescription medication, but it is important to remember that certain drugs available without a prescription in other European countries may require a doctor’s visit here. If you need a specific antibiotic or strong painkiller, having your EHIC card or travel insurance details ready is highly recommended.
For locals, the central pharmacies often serve as community hubs. Many offer services beyond simply filling prescriptions, including blood pressure monitoring, weight checks, and advice on smoking cessation. For parents, finding a pharmacy that stocks a wide range of infant formula and hypoallergenic products is a priority, while others may look for a location that specializes in dermocosmetics and high-end skincare lines.
The architecture of Gijón’s centre means that some of these pharmacies are nestled within historic buildings, offering a unique shopping experience compared to modern retail parks. Despite the varying aesthetics, the internal standards are uniformly regulated by the Colegio Oficial de Farmacéuticos de Asturias. This ensures that regardless of which door you walk through, you will receive reliable, evidence-based medical advice from a licensed professional.
Below is a curated list of reliable pharmacies situated in the city centre. These locations have been selected for their accessibility, range of services, and central positioning to help you find the nearest option regardless of which side of the centre you are currently exploring.

I was just there and the night shift worker was lovely, empathetic, and always smiling. Thank you so much for treating me so well and with so much patience! And I should mention that they should have a turnstile; the night staff are very exposed.

Outrageous. I bought ZZ lotion and they charged me €11.95. Later that afternoon, I found the same product at the Arenal store for 1.49 rupees. I went to complain and they said THEY DON'T SET THE PRICES. No comment. The attached photo proves the veracity of my review. And don't be disrespectful.
Sandra Garal★☆☆☆☆
The service at this pharmacy is awful. One Saturday at midnight, I went in for a cream because my eyes were so red and raw—it was an emergency! They had the cream, and they told me it was reserved. Who's going to pick it up at midnight on a Saturday? Not only did they refuse to give it to me, but they couldn't recommend anything similar.
Not to mention that they spent ages looking for the cream in a pharmacy that should know better, only to finally tell me they couldn't give it to me right in front of me. Awful.

Horrendous!!!! Waiting weeks for my order... not responding to any emails. They are the worst. Avoid at all costs.
Panagiotis Panagiotidis★☆☆☆☆
The communication was very poor. The answer to the email a lot days after. At the phone they speak only spanish and the use google translate to tell you, to send them an email - even if they will answer with delay. The tracking number that they send you does not work. They did not sent an invoice and the charge VAT even if that it was an intra-community purchase. Totaly not recommended.

Everything went great and quickly. Thank you very much.

I ordered my product 12 days ago and I did not receive my cream. I am living in Germany and they did not define the tracking number of GIS that I could follow up. On the other hand, they did not reply any email, any message in Instagram and in Facebook. Since, I am in Germany I do not have any access to call them and see what happened to my order. So, they have to reply our messages while they are the online shop. So sad. I am totally unsatisfied of their activities.

I want to express my gratitude for the excellent service we received at this pharmacy in Gijón.
Although we're not regular customers, as we're from Oviedo, we were struck by how kind and caring they are every time we visit, especially with my young daughter, Paula.
I'd particularly like to highlight the orthopedics department and Ana, who manages it, for her exceptional professionalism, friendly approach, patience, and invaluable advice. She's always ready to listen and offer solutions.
HM_dmr26★☆☆☆☆
A terrible experience. I've been managing an elderly person's medication my whole life, and this is the only place where they question you, give you dirty looks, ask for every possible document unnecessarily, and then tell you they don't have the medication (in this case, the most essential one) just to avoid giving it to you. I'm giving it one star because I can't give it less. Completely dissatisfied.
Martha Waves★☆☆☆☆
Terrible service. We went in because of an asthma attack to buy a Ventolin, which was the quickest way to relieve the symptoms, and they refused to give it to us even though we were struggling to breathe. As a result, we had to wait through the entire triage process in the emergency room. On the way back, we went to pick up the prescriptions, and they didn't even bother to ask how we were. Zero empathy and humanity.
Alberto Alonso Bulnes★★★★★
Open 24/7 all year round, very complete in every way, with almost everything a pharmacy should have, and if they don't order it for you, in less than a few hours they'll get anything they can't dispense on the spot through pharmaceutical cooperatives that handle the distribution of these medicines throughout Asturias. They offer friendly service and explain clearly what each prescribed medication is for. A perfect 10, you couldn't ask for more.

I bought a pregnancy test, it didn't show a control line, it was blank. I Googled it and it said it could be a manufacturing defect. I went there after the weekend, and the solution they offered was another test (which I didn't need) and they wouldn't give me a refund because I might have done it wrong (you have to study engineering these days). If I go to Alimerka and buy packaged cheese and it has mold, do I complain to the store, the factory, or am I just really nearsighted and can't see that it's "fine"? It's pathetic. The women there treated me very well, and I'm annoyed that I created an awkward situation by logically asking for a complaint form and getting angry. The manager, who's the one who says I don't know how to do a test, a man who clearly knows his stuff, didn't come out to face me at any point, unbelievable! I'm never going back there; there are other pharmacies nearby.
Patricia Castro★☆☆☆☆
I've been buying from this pharmacy for over 30 years, and they don't tell me my electronic prescription is about to expire until I go in and have to rush to the doctor to get it renewed because they'll leave me without my medication. And they tell me to move along, I have other customers. I'm never coming back. There are plenty of other pharmacies that don't mind notifying you the month before. It's a shame this business started on Bobes Street as a pharmacy and is now just a business.
Graciela Fernandez★★★★★
Highly recommended pharmacy.
Not only for its opening hours of 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, 365 days a year, but also for the pharmacist's advice, the speed of service, and the variety: Pharmacy, Over-the-Counterpharmacy, Cosmetics, Orthopedics... They always have what you need. I must mention the speed with which they address your needs and the impeccable service from Laura and Vanessa. I 100% recommend the cosmetics section. Due to my skin condition, psoriasis, Laura always helps me by recommending the product I need most, and the results are always perfect. The cosmetic promotions are amazing. And the other day they even gave me a free bone density scan!

It's a pharmacy, yes, but what I don't find normal is that a man gets a COVID test right at the counter, and they sell me medicine at the same counter, without disinfecting or anything.

Conversation with the doctor:
- I'll give you a large knee brace. Have them take your measurements, and if you need a different size, come back and we'll change the code.
11:10 AM at the pharmacy:
- "Large knee brace?" the employee says after reading the card.
- "Well, you have to take my measurements so I can…"
- "Sir, it says 'large knee brace' here, and it has a code."
- "Yes, but the doctor said to take my measurements so I can…"
- "Sir, the code is for large."
- "Yes, but it's for…"
- "I can't change the code, sir."
Faced with the impossibility of dialogue, as she interrupted me every time I tried to speak, I chose to remain silent.
Let everyone judge for themselves.

I had to order a probiotic, and although I asked the price, the woman who helped me didn't tell me. To my surprise, when I went to pick it up, it cost €44.50.
When I checked the price on Amazon at home and saw that the same product was €22.50, I also went to a pharmacy on Calle Corrida where I confirmed it had the same price, €22.50.
The explanation from the person who helped me later was that when you order a single product, the price can be much higher. I think she was surprised that I didn't know this, but it's not just much higher, it's double, and no one informed me beforehand.
They didn't offer any apology, only that I have to understand that's how the system works.
Conclusion: They prefer to make money rather than provide proper customer service. I wanted to mention this here as a warning to others.

I've been a customer of Farmacia Luaces for a long time and I couldn't be more satisfied. The service is always friendly and personal, but what truly sets them apart is their proactive approach to resolving problems.
Once, I couldn't find a medication because the manufacturer wasn't supplying it. Without me having to lift a finger, they contacted other pharmacies and told me exactly where I could get it. Another time, a prescription had expired, and they handled the notification to the doctor themselves, resolving the issue in just one day. They saved me several phone calls and a trip to the health center.
Plus, they're open every day of the year, which has been a huge relief on more than one occasion. Highly recommended. It's a pleasure to leave satisfied after taking care of a health-related matter.

I've been scammed. A young man helped me, and I explained that I had a cold sore. I showed it to him and asked if it hurt or was inflamed. I told him no, that the sore only flared up when I opened my mouth. He insisted I try an ointment. I left the pharmacy, opened the box, and a piece tore off. I read that it was for cold sores and that it ONLY relieves inflammation, which I repeatedly told him I didn't have. He charged me 10 euros for the ointment. I went to another pharmacy, and they knew perfectly well it was a cold sore as soon as they saw me and gave me a 4-euro cream. I went back to exchange the other one, and because the box was torn, they refused. Scammers and inattentive to customers. A disgrace. There are other pharmacies nearby; go to the other ones.
Vanesa G.P.★☆☆☆☆
I was ripped off. I asked for paracetamol in a tablet of less than one gram, and they gave me one that cost almost €5. I asked for a generic version. They told me they couldn't sell me a generic, that I needed a prescription. At another pharmacy, they told me that wasn't true, and that they could sell me paracetamol for less than a euro. I'm going to file a complaint.

The only pharmacy, typical for this area. The staff are incredibly friendly, both men and women. They treat you wonderfully; I even thought it wasn't a pharmacy. A mistake in a number on the prescription and no big deal. Unlike the other pharmacies, which make a huge fuss over nothing. Recommended for down-to-earth people, mutuals, and everyone else. Forget the ones on Calle Corrida, and even if you go a few meters out of your way, you'll be grateful; you won't regret it.

We've been going to this pharmacy for a while now, and they've always treated us wonderfully.
On several occasions, we've needed hydrolyzed formula for our baby quite urgently, and they've always done their best to get it for us quickly. It's so appreciated when you see that they genuinely care.
I especially remember one day when I went cycling with my son and a ton of stuff. They helped me pack everything so we could get home without any problems, something they weren't obligated to do. They're small details, but they say a lot about the service they provide.
It's so nice to find a pharmacy where they treat you with such care. For me, it's now my go-to pharmacy.

They're not at all friendly, and I've never thought so. But we had a really bad experience. Very bad. Not recommended at all. They take advantage of the fact that they have a lot of customers because they're next to the Red Cross, but there are pharmacies nearby with much better service. They sold me an item that only comes in different sizes. They couldn't advise me on the size I needed, but they assured me there would be no problem returning or exchanging it. When I went to do so, a young guy told me it was no problem until another, older guy came along and told him no because more than 15 days had passed (it had been 20 days, and they hadn't said anything about it anywhere on the receipt or verbally). They refused to exchange it or give me a refund, and to top it off, this second guy was very rude.

I had forgotten my mask and they politely asked if I didn't have one. I thought they were going to kick me out, but instead, they gave me and two other people in line a small gift. While I was queuing, there was a constant noise. When I realized what it was, the medicine was being blown out through a tube and arrived at the slide, which I thought was hilarious.

This pharmacy is appalling. They refuse to exchange a cream I bought the day before, even though it doesn't require a prescription and is still in its unopened packaging, not even the outer cardboard box. They claim that medications can't be returned by law. While this might be true, it's clearly a matter of customer service, especially since the packaging is spotless. Once bitten, twice shy. I wouldn't recommend this pharmacy to anyone when you have other pharmacies with excellent customer service just 20 meters away.

Tips for Using Pharmacies in Gijón
While finding a location is half the battle, understanding the local customs and systems will make your visit far smoother. Whether you are a tourist needing a quick fix or a new resident navigating the healthcare system, these practical tips will help you maximize the service you receive and avoid common inconveniences.
Check the "Farmacia de Guardia" schedule. If you need medicine after 10 PM, on a Sunday, or during a public holiday, not every pharmacy will be open. Spanish law mandates a rotating schedule for overnight and weekend service. The easiest way to find the current on-duty location is to look at the door of any closed pharmacy, which will display a sign listing the nearest open branches, or check the official Colegio de Farmacéuticos de Asturias website.
Bring your prescription and health card. If you are a resident with a Spanish doctor, you will need your physical health card (tarjeta sanitaria) to process electronic prescriptions. Pharmacies in Spain are heavily digitized; your doctor often sends the prescription directly to the system, and the pharmacist can access it with your card. Paper prescriptions are becoming rarer, so ensure your card is valid.
Don’t expect to buy large quantities of painkillers. While you can buy ibuprofen or paracetamol over the counter, they are kept behind the counter. You must ask the pharmacist for them specifically. Pharmacists are legally limited in how much they can sell you at one time, and they may ask questions about your symptoms to ensure the medication is appropriate.
Ask about generic brands (genéricos). Spanish pharmacies frequently offer both brand-name drugs and generic equivalents. The pharmacist is legally obligated to offer you the cheapest generic version if one is available for your prescription. Don’t be afraid to ask if there is a "genérico" option, as it can save you a significant amount of money, especially for ongoing treatments.
Utilize the pharmacist for minor ailments. You do not always need a doctor for minor issues like colds, insect bites, or mild skin rashes. Pharmacists in Spain are highly trained clinical professionals. Describing your symptoms to the pharmacist at any of these central locations can often result in an immediate, effective over-the-counter treatment, saving you a long wait at the local health centre.
The density of pharmacies in Gijón city centre ensures that healthcare access is rarely a barrier to enjoying your day. Whether you are strolling through the Plaza Mayor or shopping near Calle Corrida, you are always within reach of professional medical advice.
