Nestled in the heart of the Alsace wine region, Colmar is often celebrated for its half-timbered houses and fairy-tale canals, but its culinary scene deserves just as much attention. While choucroute and tarte flambée dominate the traditional menus, the city has quietly cultivated a vibrant and diverse sushi culture. For locals and travelers alike, finding a precise, fresh slice of raw fish in this landlocked region is no longer a challenge.
The demand for Japanese cuisine in Colmar has surged over the last decade, leading to a competitive market where only the freshest ingredients and most skilled chefs survive. Whether you are taking a break from exploring the Unterlinden Museum or winding down after a day in the vineyards, sushi offers a light yet satisfying alternative to heavier Alsatian fare. The city’s sushi spots range from sleek, modern fusion lounges to intimate, family-run counters where the focus remains purely on tradition.
Understanding the local landscape is key to choosing the right spot. Some restaurants here specialize in the artistry of nigiri and sashimi, importing fish directly from European markets several times a week. Others lean into the French-Japanese fusion trend, incorporating local ingredients like Munster cheese or Riesling-infused sauces into their rolls for a truly unique Alsatian twist.
Quality control is paramount when dining on raw fish, and Colmar’s top establishments take this seriously. You will find that the best sushi masters in the area prioritize seasonality and transparency, often displaying their fresh catches and maintaining spotless open kitchens. This dedication to freshness ensures that even though you are miles from the ocean, the texture and taste of the salmon, tuna, and sea bream remain impeccable.
Whether you are a purist looking for expertly vinegared rice or an adventurer seeking creative rolls with a French accent, Colmar has a table waiting for you. To help you navigate the options, we have curated a list of the best places to satisfy your craving, balancing authenticity with the unique character of the Alsace region.
Here is where you should be booking your next table in Colmar.

This is one of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. Will definitely come back again. It is also really nice that the menu is on an iPad and you can order whatever and whenever you want. The quantity is large and nice as good as the quality. The atmosphere is chill and nice . They have very nice decorations. The bathroom is very clean too 🤩

I was impressed that a place like Colmar has such an amazing Asian restaurant. The place itself is spotless and quite fancy. I reallt enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. The staff is very friendly, but it's the abundance of choice and the quality that this restaurant delivers, that really blew me away. At Suki you really get both quantity and quality. I would definitely go again to try their ramen, because that looked great too!

We went there twice. The first time we ordered beef ramen gyoza and beef stick thing. All was so good. I could not finish the ramen it was too much for me but it was delicious. Chicken gyoza was also good my bf loved it. The second time we tried bento 4 it was very satisfying. It had a lot on it. Sushi was not the best but okey. Then we tried meatball, beef cheese sticks they were so good. The place decoration is also nice. I recomend there.

Amazing food highly executed in a very cool part of town. The service was great considering they were very busy as well. Modern ordering by tablet and drinks are very well made too. Highly recommended and family friendly.

A small sushi spot in Colmar with a standard ambiance. We tried the maki, chicken karaage, beef rice bowl, and beer—all decent and up to standard. However, the service was quite slow as the staff seemed busy, making it hard to get their attention or settle the bill.

Very good food, awesome, quick, and kids friendly service. The place is casual and very clean. We had multiple sushi combinations, and all were great. The presentation could be better, but overall, it is recommended.
Prior reservations are needed even if it's not peak tourist season.

I've had dinner in this place, and sincerely I didn't enjoy it. The sushi wasn't bad but not what I expected. The salmon was elevated and not from the sea. It's not the best quality. The restaurant didn't even have music. It was really quite like a bit strange. The service was good. The waiter was friendly, but overall, I didn't like it.

Nice small joint, reasonable prices great options. Very speedy service

Well, an eatery rather than a restaurant. But as also in highly frequented places like Colmar, the restaurants close (for meals) in the afternoons, we had no choice. And although the owners are Chinese, they have adopted that lack of friendlyness and respect for the guest by saying rather directly, up to unfriendly that we must hurry with our choice because the kitchen will close soon. Well, the Sushi was okay, nothing less but nothing more.
Be it for the food, the atmosphere or the permanent lack of smiles and friendlyness although I speak French, we will not visit that place anymore.

I came here because I was craving fiber in the form of vegetables. I got the chicken rice bowl, beef ramen, and vegetable stir fry. They were all very tasty! I do wish they added more pieces of meat to the ramen and rice bowl, but the price is reasonable. The staff are all very friendly! The restaurant itself is very clean and open. I think they more takeout than dine-in, so there is a lot of room. The service is quick.

So fresh and delicious sushi and sashimi!
The restaurant wasn't busy but it was quite late in the evening so the service was perfect.
Lots of options for kids.

Had this sushi takeaway while on holiday in France. The service and the people were Lovely and friendly. The food itself Was tasty, I particularly like the sushi tacos. Even though we went over the holiday period, they still managed to squeeze us in.

We visited Côté Sushi Colmar today and we are absolutely impressed.
We had actually ordered through Uber Eats beforehand, but unfortunately our order didn’t arrive due to an issue on Uber’s side. So we decided to go there in person and we are so glad we did.
We ordered sushi for takeaway and received such a warm and attentive service. The staff member was an extremely kind woman who helped us and took the time to explain everything which is something you don’t see very often.
The sushi itself was, without a doubt, the best we’ve ever had: extremely fresh, delicate, and full of flavor.
We waited about 20 minutes, which was clearly communicated to us in advance, so that was completely fine.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

Overpriced and disappointing. The California rolls were tiny, not fresh, with gray avocado and dry rice that tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. Definitely not worth the price.

Very highly recommended for sushi lovers when visiting Colmar. The ambience is really calm and relaxing. They have a good outside seating but they do have a nice vibe inside. The sushi we ordered was veg and was really delicious. They do have a different way of packing their sauces. Overall representation was really awesome and so was the taste. The people at work are very friendly and nice. Would like to visit again.

Being used to a different eating schedule, we arrived at the restaurant at almost 3:00 PM, an uncommon time to eat in Colmar and the surrounding areas—and even less common for a restaurant to provide service at that hour.
However, that was not an issue at Côté Sushi Colmar. Not only did they serve us, but their waitstaff welcomed us warmly and kindly.
The place is truly peaceful, beautiful, and pleasant. We ordered a sushi platter and a poke bowl, and both were incredibly delicious and flavorful. The quality of the food was excellent. The portions were also just right and satisfying. On top of that, the prices were quite competitive compared to other restaurants in the area.
If you love sushi and visit Colmar, this is a must-try.
Highly recommended. When I return to Colmar, I’ll definitely come back!
Tips for Choosing the Best Sushi in Colmar
While a great list of restaurants is a solid starting point, knowing how to navigate a menu and time your visit can elevate your dining experience significantly. The sushi scene in Colmar varies widely in style, price, and atmosphere, so understanding a few local nuances will help you avoid tourist traps and eat like a local. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind when selecting your sushi spot.
1. Look for the Lunchtime Menus (Formules Midi)
If you want to experience high-quality sushi without breaking the bank, plan your visit for lunch. Many of Colmar’s top Japanese restaurants offer a "formule midi" that includes a selection of sushi, miso soup, and a salad at a fraction of the dinner price. This is the best way to sample the chef’s skill while keeping your travel budget intact.
2. Don’t Shy Away from the Alsatian Fusion Rolls
While traditionalists might stick to salmon nigiri, Colmar excels at Franco-Japanese fusion. Many chefs incorporate local produce, such as foie gras, Munster cheese, or even sauerkraut, into their maki rolls. These creations are rarely found elsewhere and offer a delicious bridge between the local culture and Japanese technique.
3. Book Ahead for Weekend Evenings
Colmar is a heavily visited tourist destination, and the city’s dining rooms fill up quickly, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Unlike grabbing a quick kebab or tarte flambée, sushi restaurants tend to have limited seating due to the need for a focused, attentive kitchen. A quick phone call or online reservation will save you from a long wait.
4. Check for Fresh Fish Delivery Days
Freshness is the single most important factor in sushi, and in a landlocked city, delivery schedules matter. Most high-end spots receive their fish shipments on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you want the absolute best texture and flavor, try to align your visit with these days or simply ask the staff what arrived fresh that morning.
5. Consider the Takeaway Experience
If you are staying in one of Colmar’s charming guesthouses or planning a picnic along the Lauch River, consider ordering sushi to go. Many top-rated spots offer beautiful takeaway platters that are perfect for enjoying with a bottle of chilled Alsatian Riesling. Just be sure to eat it promptly to maintain the integrity of the rice and fish.
Exploring the sushi scene in Colmar offers a refreshing counterpoint to the region’s rich, hearty classics. It is a testament to the city’s ability to embrace international flavors while maintaining the high standards of hospitality and quality that the Alsace region is famous for.
Whether you opt for a strict traditional omakase experience or a playful roll that pays homage to French ingredients, you are in for a treat. Take your time, savor the craftsmanship, and enjoy the unique blend of cultures that makes dining in Colmar so memorable.
