Bordeaux is world-renowned for its wine, but in recent years, the culinary landscape has evolved dramatically. The city now boasts a vibrant and sophisticated dining scene that extends far beyond traditional canard and entrecôte. For food lovers, exploring the local sushi offerings has become an essential part of the modern Bordeaux experience.
The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean means local chefs have access to exceptional fresh fish. This maritime advantage allows Bordeaux’s Japanese restaurants to compete with larger capitals like Paris. Whether you are looking for a quick lunchtime bento or a high-end omakase experience, the city delivers with style.
However, with so many options popping up across the Quartier Saint-Pierre and the Chartrons district, choosing where to eat can be overwhelming. You want to avoid tourist traps that serve bland rice and frozen fish. Instead, you deserve to find the spots where locals line up for authentic flavors and masterful preparation.
This guide curates the essential sushi destinations in the city, focusing on quality of ingredients, rice preparation, and atmosphere. We have analyzed menus, customer loyalty, and the reputation of the chefs to bring you a list that satisfies both purists and modern fusion lovers. From intimate counters to chic bistros, there is a perfect roll waiting for you.
Prepare to discover addresses that prioritize the art of Japanese cuisine. We will walk you through the neighborhoods and explain what makes each spot unique. By the end of this guide, you will know exactly where to go to satisfy your craving for the freshest sashimi and perfectly seasoned sushi rice.
Here is our curated selection of the best places to eat sushi in Bordeaux right now.

We stopped in for lunch today. We had heard it was good so we weren’t surprised by how great it was but it more than lived up to what we had heard. There were two of us and we had two different set lunches. One included two vegetarian Mako rolls (there are only two I believe), homemade iced tea, and a wonderful Mochi ice cream ball. The other included one vegetarian and one non-vegetarian roll, and the tea and the ice cream. for that I chose “red tuna“, which I believe probably means what I would call blue fin tuna, and was a one euro extra supplement. All three of the different rolls we had were really tasty and in our experience new and original. The Japanese – Peruvian fusion idea works really well, I must say. The man who served us and explained the menu to us was helpful and kind. Sadly, we are leaving Bordeaux tomorrow. Otherwise we would definitely be going back. Highly recommended.

Interesting concept but marred by service which was a little slow. Lunched here with partner but felt that delivery drivers got priority over us. Chose the menu essentiel lunch menu which was good value but server forgot my iced tea so I had to ask for it . Tasty but rather large veggie rolls to eat in hands. Very pleasant but I’m not sure we’ll go back.

Excellent experience at Mako, with a little groupe of friends.
Nice music playlists in the background, welcoming area, cozy and small restaurant.
Service was amazing, friendly, they took time to explain their concept of revisiting Japanese street food with Peruvian twists (no classic salmon avocado but fish like snapper mullet etc)
Food was great, fresh, tasty, with nice spicy sauces for the makis and more.
Totally recommend it

Modern innovative take on Peruvian Japanese sushi rolls. Delicious balanced flavours.

Fantastic, authentic Japanese food and very welcoming service!
We got lucky and got a table here without reservation and had delicious authentic Japanese food!
They have different choices of raw and cooked starters and main dishes. We took the bento box and the curry and both had a tasty miso soup as a starter.
The service was super welcoming and attentive. Overall we can highly recommend it and would come again!

We recently dined at this Japanese restaurant and was thoroughly impressed! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a calm elegance that immediately sets the tone for a great meal. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of authentic flavor—from the incredibly fresh sushi to the perfectly seasoned ramen.
The staff were friendly, attentive, and happy to offer recommendations, which made the experience even better. You can really feel the care and craftsmanship that goes into each plate.
Whether you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine or trying it for the first time, this place is an absolute gem. I can’t wait to go back and explore more of the menu! Highly recommended. 🍣✨

I've never enjoyed a sushi restaurant as much as I did enjoy Blaze trip. ✨
From the moment we arrived until the very last bite, the entire experience was exceptional. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, and you can immediately tell that the chef is truly passionate about his craft. His attention to detail, creativity, and dedication come through in every dish.
We chose the Summer Menu along with the Mystery selection, and every single piece of sushi was outstanding. Each bite was perfectly balanced, incredibly fresh, and full of flavor. It was exciting to discover new combinations, and every course managed to surprise us.
This is much more than just a sushi restaurant—it's a true culinary experience. If you're looking for exceptional quality, creativity, and genuine passion, this place is absolutely worth visiting. I can't wait to come back!
Mark Marushkin★★★★★
Amazing experience! We were very surprised and delighted with the menu and it’s presentation! Very great concept, and everything tastes amazing! The owner takes a personal approach with each table, explaining the dishes, how they taste, made, and etc, and as well as asking your personal opinions in order to improve the menu further!
Overall, very good experience and very much recommended if you want to try new and unusual sushis!
Nika K★★★★★
An absolutely delicious place for sushi! The flavours are experimental and it’s a real pleasure to try out something so unique! Everything has been perfectly thought through, from the visual presentation up until the little details of taste. If you’re passing by Bordeaux, give this place a try 🤗
Michelle Lanstra★★★★★
Wonderful sushi done in a unique and gorgeous way. The chef has a great sense of balance, not only in taste but in presentation. The use of color and edible flowers is inspired.
Quentin Hervé★★★★★
After just two pieces of sushi, my girlfriend said about the chef: “It’s like he doesn’t know limits.”
I found it beautifully put, because she was right. The chef seems to ignore conventions entirely. He follows his intuition and imagination, and you can feel it in every bite.
If you are looking for an explosion of flavours, unexpected culinary surprises, and a journey from Western Europe to Southeast Asia without leaving Bordeaux, this is the place.
Thank you for making this moment so incredible for us.

Beautiful Japanese food, small menu which often means strong presentation. It did not disappoint at all. Lovely flavours throughout, we had a tuna starter then miso soups, 2 had Vegetarian option and 3 of us had the beef menu all of which was 2 or 3 tiered/stacked. Fabulous and they seem to do lunch only. I washed down with a Kirin Ichiban beer, daughter had a Sake cocktail others had waters.
Food a plenty and no room for desert…!
A must try, especially close to Stalingrad square and if you just stepped off the river taxi service.
We walked in and hit lucky as they slotted us in before closing. Thank you and such a beautiful dog!
Maria Caballero★★★★★
Real Japanese food.
Easy and healthy options.
I really like that the high quality of the ingredients and the freshness.

Amazing spot, probably the best Japanese restaurant from all the city, hands off.
3 people, all amazing. Small place, just enough for you to infuse with the mood. Few choices of food, perfect to eat something really deep and simple together. And the price just fine, cheery on top.
本当にありがとうございました!

Superb experience at this traditional Japanese restaurant in tje heart of Bordeaux. Superb. Crispy ton-kotsu, maki, misozukeyaki, kobachi, sashimi. Friendly expert service and a nice choice of wines and sake. Impeccable presentation. Really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

We went here for lunch and ordered different set menus. Food was exceptional and the servers are attentive.
Otar Kipshidze★☆☆☆☆
It is impossible to book a table by any online means. Website suggests to contact by phone for reservations. I tried around 10 times to call during the day to make a reservation (including by hotel reception) but no one answers the phone. We went there shortly after opening and restaurant was almost empty, explained the situation to the staff, but were refused a table regardless. Extremely bad customer service. I guess some places can’t handle their Michelin guide ranking, which is not only about the food quality.
Donald Bertrand★★☆☆☆
My wife and I thought a Japanese restaurant in Bordeaux would be a unique experience. It certainly was, but not in a good way. The night started out good with the appetizers being quite good. However, from there on, service was excruciating slow. By the time our main dishes arrived, the food was cold and soggy. I decided maybe desert will be worth waiting for. I was wrong, we waited and waited. Finally, we picked our coats, paided and left in disgust. Not impressed! I recommend getting more servers and cooks if needed. I shouldn't be waiting for dessert after being in your restaurant for 2 1/2 hrs. Unacceptable!

The best sushi in the center of Bordeaux! We've been customers here for almost six years, and it has always been an amazing experience. A special mention to Raphael , who is always friendly, welcoming, and makes us feel so well taken care of. Highly recommended!
Linda Yue★★★★☆
A nice conveyer belt sushi option. The rotating choices are a bit limited (or at least were during my visit) but reasonable portions and solid quality. There is a more full menu of other foods as well. Fun relaxing atmosphere.
Note- the menu option is not all you can eat plates. The price includes a certain number of plates, any additional plates would be extra.
laura blomme★★★★☆
Really nice experience. Unique concept where you take of the plates you want to have. Also you can order just a la carte but its nice to just watch the plates go by and choose from that.
Plates have a color so you know what the price is. Also nice that de kitchen is open so if you want you can chat with the chefs
Only downside is that some plates are too long standing on the express tray.
Braden Beal★★★★★
Amazing food, amazing atmosphere. Fantastic quick snack. Will recommend
Chloe Fraser★★☆☆☆
Food was ok but WAY overpriced. The service however was absolutely terrible. Was left sitting for 20 minutes waiting to order. Called someone over and started placing the order, he just walked away. Finally got someone else’s attention 10 mins later and ordered. I would have left way earlier but I had already eaten a plate from the sushi train and I couldn’t even get anyone’s attention to pay. Don’t bother.

I loved that everything was fresh. And the quality of ingredients were great. I wish that they served a bit more soy sauce since I had to ask for more. The service was great. The waitress explained everything in detailed and she even offered a limonade since there was a misunderstanding about the menu. You would need to pay more for a specific piece of wagu. If I remember well it’s +15 for the faut-fillet.
I loved the waygu prepared on charcoals. Absolutely delicious and I tried some of my daughters duck! Absolutely wonderful.
I think if this place invest a bit more on refine decor it would be the cerise sur le gâteau!

Incredible experience. I dont think there is another place on earth that has japanese omikase that good with Bordeaux wines. If your going, splash out and get the a5 wagyu kaseiki it goes soo ridiculously well with the Bordeaux reds and was honestly one of the top 3 meals I’ve ever eaten. 10/10

Visited on a business trip for a late dinner. The restaurant was quiet but still a really nice vibe. Food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Amongst the nicest ramen I've had outside of Japan.

Tonkatsu ramen avec porc. Miso style. Tres bien. Perfect when you are from Sydney, Australia and missing cuisine Japonaise. I have been coming here for three years. It just keeps getting better and better. Closest tram stop - line A - Hotel de Police.

Such a lovely find, Suki is small and might be unimpressive from the outside next to a busy road but - how looks can be deceiving. I have been here several time for lunch and each time i’m impressed. the food is amazing, ramen as close as it gets to what I used to eat in Japan. Great gyozas In different delicious flavours - veggies/pork/chicken, it’s great. Both the terrace and the interior are cute - the terrace being a bit noisy next to the road. Staff is always friendly and service is fast. I ll definitely be back.

We enjoyed the sushi, especially the special rolls. The place is small and charming. The lady who served us was very polite. The service was very fast; I was very pleased.
Andrea Alvis★★★★★
Exceedingly fresh sushi, gracious staff, and a dining room that, while a bit worn, is clean and the atmosphere welcoming. The sushi selection may not be as extensive as some larger Japanese restaurants, but there’s something for everyone. Seating is cozy and somewhat limited, so arriving early, making a reservation, or opting for take-away is recommended. We’ll definitely be making this our neighborhood sushi go-to.

I came with two friends and the food was so delicious, the service was very attentive and we left feeling full and happy. Already plan on returning in a few friends!
Maria de Moraes Palmeira★★★★★
Amazingly fresh sushi we went there twice. Menu 1 and C were really good. Also order the crevette maki and salmon maki. The salmon in specifics was very fresh
Roland Xu★★★★★
Quiet little place that had good service and decent sushi which not too expensive. The nori they used in the sushi tasted quite good and really brought out the flavor in otherwise very standard rolls.
Essential Tips for Choosing Great Sushi in Bordeaux
To truly enjoy the sushi scene in Bordeaux, it helps to know what separates a mediocre meal from an exceptional one. While the city is full of options, applying a few local insights can significantly elevate your dining experience. Here are some expert tips to keep in mind before you make your reservation or walk through the door.
1. Follow the Market Days
The quality of sushi is directly tied to the fishing schedule. While high-end restaurants receive daily deliveries, many smaller spots stock up after the major market days. Try to book your sushi dinner for a Thursday or Friday night, as chefs often have the freshest inventory following the mid-week restocks. Avoid Monday dining when possible, as many suppliers do not deliver on Sundays, meaning the fish might be a day older.
2. Don’t Ignore the "Formule Midi"
If you are on a budget but still want high quality, take advantage of the lunch specials (formules). Many of the top-tier sushi restaurants in Bordeaux offer significantly reduced prices at lunchtime compared to their evening à la carte menus. This allows you to sample the quality of a high-end chef without paying the premium dinner price. It is the perfect way to test a spot before committing to a full omakase dinner.
3. Look Beyond the Salmon
While Norwegian salmon is delicious, Bordeaux’s proximity to the Atlantic means you should focus on local white fish and shellfish. Look for specials featuring line-caught sea bass (bar), turbot, or even local oysters incorporated into the menu. A restaurant that showcases local seafood in its sushi is demonstrating a commitment to freshness and regional sourcing that frozen tuna importers often lack.
4. Check the Rice Temperature
This is the hallmark of a true sushi master. In Bordeaux, the ambient room temperature can be cool, which often causes restaurants to serve rice that is too cold. Great sushi rice should be slightly warm or at room temperature, never chilled from a refrigerator. If your rice is cold and hard, it is a sign that the restaurant is pre-making batches and storing them, which ruins the texture and vinegar balance.
5. Sit at the Counter
Whenever possible, request a seat at the sushi bar. Bordeaux has embraced the theater of the open kitchen, and watching the itamae (chef) work is part of the experience. It ensures your food goes directly from the cutting board to your plate without sitting under a heat lamp. It also allows you to ask the chef what they recommend that specific day, often unlocking off-menu items that are the freshest of the day.
Bordeaux has firmly established itself as a destination for Japanese cuisine, blending French culinary standards with traditional Edomae techniques. Whether you are a local looking for a new regular haunt or a visitor needing a break from heavy bistro fare, the city’s sushi restaurants offer a refreshing and healthy alternative.
The next time you are strolling along the Garonne or exploring the narrow streets of the old town, let your appetite guide you to one of these exceptional addresses. Your taste buds will thank you for taking the detour to experience the lighter, more delicate side of Bordeaux’s gastronomic revolution.
