Biarritz may be synonymous with world-class surfing and Belle Époque grandeur, but this elegant Basque coast resort is also a serious culinary destination. While the local cuisine is often defined by Bayonne ham, Espelette pepper, and fresh Atlantic seafood, the city’s sushi scene has quietly evolved into one of the most exciting on the southwestern coast of France. Whether you are stepping off the beach in a wetsuit or dressing up for a night out, the raw fish offerings here are remarkably refined.
The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean means that while traditional Japanese imports like bluefin tuna are standard, many Biarritz chefs integrate local line-caught fish into their menus. This fusion of Japanese technique and Basque terroir creates a dining experience you simply cannot find in larger, landlocked cities. From high-end omakase counters to casual takeaway spots perfect for a sunset picnic, there is a raw fish fix for every budget and mood.
Understanding the local dining rhythm is key to enjoying sushi in Biarritz. Unlike Paris, where kitchens often run late into the night, many restaurants here align their service with the surf schedule and the European dinner hour. Booking ahead is highly recommended, especially during the summer months when the population swells with tourists and surfers looking for high-quality protein after a long day in the water.
The best sushi spots in this seaside town prioritize freshness and presentation, often blending French plating aesthetics with Japanese minimalism. You will find meticulously sliced sashimi, creative maki rolls, and occasionally a nod to local ingredients such as piquillo peppers or sheep’s milk cheese. It is this willingness to innovate while respecting tradition that makes the sushi scene here so compelling.
To help you navigate the options, we have compiled a list of the top establishments based on fish quality, chef expertise, atmosphere, and value. We have prioritized venues that locals trust and return to, ensuring you avoid tourist traps and experience the authentic flavors of the region. Whether you are a purist looking for nigiri or an adventurer seeking fusion rolls, this guide has you covered.
Below, you will find our curated selection of the twelve best sushi spots in Biarritz, followed by expert tips on how to make the most of your meal in this beautiful coastal city.

Asian fusion with a great vibe, superb drinks and wonderful service. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at OKO during our recent visit to Biarritz. We stopped by on a Saturday night for drinks and were amazed by the quality and originality of the cocktails crafted by Jezabel (OKO's mixologist). We were so impressed that we decided to return the following evening for dinner and more drinks. The food is a combination of Asian cuisine. We especially liked the Korean BBQ chicken, fried rice and gyoza. Juliette provided us with service in the dining room and she could not have been more friendly and professional. We finished the evening back at the bar where Jezabel amazed us with her unique and delicious cocktails. We especially enjoyed her Mumbai Dirty Chai and Caipirinuts cocktails. I highly recommend OKO if you are in Biarritz.

Very good sushi and service, and also the prive related to quality. The only thing I suggest is to improve the tables in terrace, the chairs are not so confortable to pass a dinner night. Maybe they are ok for a cocktail… 🙂
Will Garcia de Quevedo★★★★☆
Wonderful little sushi place in Biarritz. We tried several maki rolls (fave was the rainbow roll) and the pork belly bao. The bao was awesome!

Oko had the most gorgeous and delicious food. We had the best sushi rolls ever. The waiters were great and patient with our poor french. Would give food 100% but would have like chairs that were a little more comfortable or provide a small cushion.

The best Japanese restaurant in Biarritz! We went there for lunch and had a truly wonderful dining experience. The chicken was very flavorful and tender as butter. Both the ramen and the Japanese curry were delicious. The owner is very friendly. We’ll definitely be back.
RATCHA B★★★★★
Very nice Japanese restaurant (I really mean it! ) with a reasonable price.
We went there for the Monday lunch.
The food was well- prepared.
We had 2 entrés, the chicken karaké and soup. There was incredibly good. The chicken karaké is well seasoning so you don't even need the sauce to eat with. The miso soup was delicious.
Then, I had ramen noodles which pretty good but for me I would love more if it's more spicy. My husband had a suggestion of the day which turn out a lunch set with miso soup, rice, long beam salad and deep-fried pork which so so good.
The homemade dessert is also good too.
We will go back again for sure

Great authentic Japanese restaurant! We had lunch for two people, one cold ramen and fried pork. The cold ramen was delicious and I was surprised by the delicate presentation on my plate. The service is perfect with the chef very compliant and helpful. You can really tell that everything is made with love, passion and precision.
Completely recommend it, it was a nice surprise and I would definitely go there again.

We took 2 pastas (checken and schrimp). Both were sauer. 4 schrips in my pasta was defenetly tasty.
Oktopus balls was interested, but just 1-2 small pcs of Oktopus meat was inside. Think 9 euros its realy overestimated price for 4 balls.
Match cocktail with Whiskey was good. If you like match, i would recommend to try.
Service was good, girls were nice and smiley.

Nice Japanese restaurant in Biarritz , cozy with good food and sake.

Service and place was great, but unfortunately food did not stand out. Didnt feel like authentic Japanese. If you’ve tried real Sukiyaki and Oyakodon (corrected!) this is a bit far from Japanese (maybe halfway if you’re trying)

Honestly, it’s a very place in the center of Biarritz where you can have a great time, enjoy good food, and admire a beautiful ocean view. Huge respect to the staff, who are constantly attentive and always taking care of the restaurant instead of standing around. I definitely recommend this place to visit!
Vasily Shilov★★★☆☆
Food was nice, a little expensive, service took longer than we expected, because of that all dishes came at different time. Someone was waiting for main course, while others was done with food and just sitting.
Overall experience was nice, drinks were fast to arrive and asahi beer delirious as always. Great for one time dinner. Rolls was good, dishes like udon and salmon tartar was great, girls enjoyed.
During the summer make sure you sitting outside, it’s extremely hot inside.

Great experience, the food is delicious- but expensive (20 € for a donburi). I am so happy we now have a real japanese restaurant in Biarritz. We'll be back.

really, one of the best restaurants in Biarritz! Excellent, friendly and helpful staff! Very tasty and interesting food! We come back here for the third time during our vacation, and every time we are delighted!

Read the owner’s responses to low-star reviews. You will get a good idea of why service is so bad in this place.
Original review
The food is good, but the service is impressively slow and lacking.
Go and expect to receive a menu anytime between 30-60 minutes after self-seating. Expect to receive your food anytime between 60-90 minutes.
Lower your service expectations as much as possible, and you'll be happy. Don't expect to get napkins or plates.
Again, I must say. When you do get your food after a very, very long wait, the food is good. Is it amazing? No. Just good.
Added after receiving a reply
So, we entered the restaurant around 20:50
We received the menus around 21:25
We made the order around 21:35
We got our appetizers around 21:50
We got our main dish around 22:10
And paid and left the restaurant precisely at 22:30
I am not exaggerating at all. We are better positioned to be time conscious than whoever responded to this review. I'll make sure I send a food influencer next time, and ask her to take a picture of her watch to give you a reality check.
A business owner could have read my review and thought of the following questions, and tried to find solutions...
We're we over capacity?
Are we understaffed?
Are we overstaffed in certain areas?
Are we institutionalized enough? Following lean processes and standards?
Should we remove a table, or two, or three?
Do we need training?
How are others doing it? For instance, similar neighboring restaurants such as Le Palais de Jade?
How can we be more inclusive? Be able to accept tourists? Families? Big families with kids?
Instead, the business owner, or just “the owner” cause I don’t think they take reviews in a business sense but rather take them personally. Whoever responded to this review does not seem to be fond of my review—sending us the least sincere apology. They thanked us, a family with three children (two toddlers), for leaving the table messy. Well, you're welcome. It was a pleasure.

Tartar de thon needs some work, otherwise very good.

The food is good, but the portion size is way too small for the price. I ate the 8 EUR udon noodles in exactly five bites (as a normal sized man).
Alexandra Oliveira★☆☆☆☆
We visited for Réveillon, and we could have not been more disappointed.
Service was very unprofessional. Two ladies served us the amuse-bouche and the starter together, even before we had been served drinks. When we asked what the main course would be, one of them answered: “Havent you checked the menu in advance?”. Well, no, we didnt because we didnt book the table in the first place; but even if we had, should we need to pass a test in order to know whats next?
Now, the biggest disappointment: food. Quality was so poor that we felt embarrassed for all the guests in the room. We felt like dogs trying to chew the meat. Desert was some sort of mousse au chocolat, though it was so liquid it could have well been served as a drink.
Finally: the atmosphere. We were rushed through the courses, only to see the doors opened at 22:30 to a crowd of already drunk people coming in from outside. If the goal was to make seated guests feel unwelcome and hurry them out, then mission accomplished—good luck for 2026, you will need it.
Gregory Faulkner★★★★☆
Fish was very fresh and tasty. Enjoyed everything except that we waited almost 45 minutes for 2 rolls and a nigiri and we were the first people in the restaurant. No clue how it could possibly take that long to complete the first order of the night. Other than the worlds slowest service the food was yummy and the atmosphere was pleasant.
Zoltan★★★☆☆
Terrible service, never felt so ignored in a restaurant. Food was average for what it is, definitely not the best value for money. If you have a desperate craving for sushi then go for it.

Nice design of the place. We ate very delicious sashimi, as main course octopus and beef both great and with good souse. They are working 2 shifts. First 19.30, second at 21.30 better to book a table. Cocktails were also fine👍🏼 thank you and good luck.

This place is about the only walkable ramen restaurant from Biarritz town centre. Located in a small open side mall. Great for a light meal and something other than French cuisine. Also it may be a little bit more expensive than what you get elsewhere.

I only tried the ramen. I had high hopes, and while the broth and toppings were not bad, but the noodles were terrible. They were soft and mushy, I couldn’t eat them. I’d like to come back, but try something else, as there are some good reviews.

This was a fantastic sushi experience. From the stunning menu, the lovely atmosphere, the gorgeous presentation all the way to the great service. And the dishes? Sensational! We come from the U.S. and this was the best sushi the 5 of us (2 adults and 3 older teens) ever had. Absolutely genius flavor pairings.
And the price was incredibly fair. We ate a ton and didn’t break the bank. We will definitely be back! Merci!
Poyeon Kim★★★★★
All the dishes are fresh with reasonable price. Good atmosphere and kind staffs, serving foods very fast but you may have to wait for them to come to you as they are so busy on taking calls for take aways.
As a person from London where Sashimi is super overpriced andbut don't taste good or fresh enough, and the list of Sashimi is mostly salmon only, I was very satisfied for the quality and quanity. Also nice atmosphere.

Brilliant sushi 🍣 and the staff were just amazing. We don't speak French, and they were great. It even started a downpour of rain, and they let us borrow their umbrella 🌂 service was class.

The manager who greeted us was very friendly and pleasant.
The platters were prepared while we shopped.
The quality/price ratio is excellent! Both for the sushi/maki and the prepared dishes.
I highly recommend it.
MANIAC SARL★☆☆☆☆
I can't give a lower rating. The quality and quantity of the sushi were disappointing.
Being served in over 30 minutes for sushi that was already on a platter in the fridge was unacceptable! Heating the soy sauce in its plastic wrap in the dishes is simply unacceptable! I stated that the hot dishes were for my children and asked to remove the ginger to heat it up. They said yes, and to my surprise, it was still piping hot inside... thanks a lot!
We were just passing through the area. We will not be sharing this address.

Excellent Japanese restaurant, friendly atmosphere, good service and very well served and well made dishes. One of the best oriental restaurants in Biarritz. Absolutely shockingly bad!! How this restaurant gets good reviews is beyond me. Every item was under seasoned barely cooked to any standard, no sauce on the lamb or fish main course, starters were horrible! DO NOT GO HERE! An absolute disrespect to French cooking. Well who’d have expected to find this fine Korean restaurant in Biarritz of all places. The food was perfection. The May Garen (black egg) is one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted and I don’t like eggs. We took the BBQ tasting menu and there were many times when eyes rolled to the back of our heads in pleasure. And the service, I whispered gluten free and GF dishes appeared. And don’t forget to try a cocktail (yum!). Great service, beautiful wait staff. An absolute must visit. I’m planning my return already!
Tobias A★★★★★
Very nice space. We had Korean barbecue. The meat was high-quality and all sides were super and felt like taken from a street in Seoul. We have been to Korea a lot and this place is definitely up there among the best Korean dishes that we’ve had. This is a gem that’s a bit hidden away on the outskirts of central Biarritz, well worth a slight detour. Very nice service as sugar on top!
Shuang Gao★★★★★
Amazing food, finally legit Korean food in Biarritz! And really warm service, we loved the staff!
Thibault Fortuny★★★★★
Amazing spot. Very nice concept, where you grill your own meat / vegetables. We tried the "discovery" meat platter consisting in marinated beef, regular beef, and pork. They were all extra tender and tasty, and served with sides of rice, fresh vegetables, kimchi, leek salad, red cabbage and lettuce. Plenty of very tasty food, served on a convivial style table with the grill in the middle, nice wine list and very nice service. Would highly recommend, and will come back! Thank you.
Essential Tips for Enjoying Sushi in Biarritz
Navigating the sushi scene in a French coastal town requires a slightly different approach than dining in Japan or a major metropolitan hub. To ensure you have the best possible culinary experience, we have outlined a few key strategies that will help you dine like a local, secure the best seats, and appreciate the unique fusion of Basque and Japanese influences.
1. Book Ahead During the Surf Season
Biarritz is a major tourist destination, particularly from June to September. The most intimate sushi counters and high-end Japanese restaurants often have limited seating and are fully booked days in advance. Do not rely on walk-ins for dinner; make a reservation via phone or online as soon as you know your travel dates.
2. Embrace the Local Catch
While it is tempting to order only salmon and tuna, ask your chef if they have any local Atlantic fish available. Many top Biarritz sushi masters source sea bream, turbot, or line-caught hake from nearby Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Ordering the daily special or "chef’s choice" often yields the freshest and most unique bites on the menu.
3. Respect the French Dining Schedule
Unlike major cities with all-day service, many quality restaurants in Biarritz close between lunch and dinner (roughly 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM). If you are craving sushi for a late lunch after surfing, check the kitchen hours first. Dinner service typically starts at 7:30 PM, and arriving early often means a quieter, more attentive service experience.
4. Pair with Basque Beverages
Skip the standard beer and consider pairing your sushi with a local white wine. The dry, mineral-driven whites of the nearby Irouléguy appellation or a crisp Txakoli from the Spanish Basque country pair beautifully with raw fish. For a non-alcoholic option, ask for a high-quality Japanese green tea, which many top spots import directly.
5. Look for "Omakase" or Tasting Menus
For the ultimate expression of the chef’s skill, opt for a tasting menu if it is offered.
