Biarritz may be synonymous with Atlantic surf breaks and decadent beachside cafés, but this elegant Basque coastal town has quietly cultivated a serious appetite for Japanese cuisine. Over the last decade, a wave of skilled chefs has introduced Biarritz to the delicate art of sushi, sashimi, and comforting ramen bowls, creating a dining scene that rivals much larger French cities. For locals and travelers alike, Japanese restaurants here offer a refreshing counterpoint to the region’s heavier, meat-focused Basque classics.
What makes the Japanese dining scene in Biarritz so compelling is its emphasis on precision and freshness. Given the town’s proximity to the ocean and the daily fish auctions at the nearby port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, chefs have direct access to pristine Atlantic seafood. This unique geographic advantage allows them to blend traditional Edomae sushi techniques with the briny, robust flavors of the Bay of Biscay, resulting in a dining experience that is distinctly Basque-Japanese.
Whether you are looking for an elegant omakase experience after a day at the Hôtel du Palais, or a quick, nourishing bowl of udon before hitting the waves at Grande Plage, there is a table waiting for you. The variety ranges from minimalist, high-end counters where the chef slices fish in silence, to lively izakaya-style rooms where the sake flows as freely as the conversation. Understanding this landscape is key to finding the meal that matches your mood.
This curated guide focuses on quality, authenticity, and the overall value of the experience. We have considered not just the technical execution of the rice and the sharpness of the knives, but also the atmosphere and the sourcing of ingredients. From imported Japanese rice and real wasabi to locally caught line fish, these establishments represent the pinnacle of Japanese gastronomy in the French Basque Country.
Before diving into the specific addresses, it is worth noting that reservations are highly recommended, especially during the summer months and the surf festival season. Many of these restaurants are intimate, with limited counter seating, and they book out days in advance. While the dress code is generally relaxed—this is a surf town, after all—dinner service tends to lean toward smart casual.
Prepare to discover a side of Biarritz that goes beyond the pintxos bars and bakeries. These are the kitchens where French culinary rigor meets Japanese philosophy, creating plates that are as visually stunning as they are delicious.

We took 2 pastas (checken and schrimp). Both were sauer. 4 schrips in my pasta was defenetly tasty.
Oktopus balls was interested, but just 1-2 small pcs of Oktopus meat was inside. Think 9 euros its realy overestimated price for 4 balls.
Match cocktail with Whiskey was good. If you like match, i would recommend to try.
Service was good, girls were nice and smiley.

Service and place was great, but unfortunately food did not stand out. Didnt feel like authentic Japanese. If you’ve tried real Sukiyaki and Oyakodon (corrected!) this is a bit far from Japanese (maybe halfway if you’re trying)

The best Japanese restaurant in Biarritz! We went there for lunch and had a truly wonderful dining experience. The chicken was very flavorful and tender as butter. Both the ramen and the Japanese curry were delicious. The owner is very friendly. We’ll definitely be back.

Very nice Japanese restaurant (I really mean it! ) with a reasonable price.
We went there for the Monday lunch.
The food was well- prepared.
We had 2 entrés, the chicken karaké and soup. There was incredibly good. The chicken karaké is well seasoning so you don't even need the sauce to eat with. The miso soup was delicious.
Then, I had ramen noodles which pretty good but for me I would love more if it's more spicy. My husband had a suggestion of the day which turn out a lunch set with miso soup, rice, long beam salad and deep-fried pork which so so good.
The homemade dessert is also good too.
We will go back again for sure

Great authentic Japanese restaurant! We had lunch for two people, one cold ramen and fried pork. The cold ramen was delicious and I was surprised by the delicate presentation on my plate. The service is perfect with the chef very compliant and helpful. You can really tell that everything is made with love, passion and precision.
Completely recommend it, it was a nice surprise and I would definitely go there again.

Honestly, it’s a very place in the center of Biarritz where you can have a great time, enjoy good food, and admire a beautiful ocean view. Huge respect to the staff, who are constantly attentive and always taking care of the restaurant instead of standing around. I definitely recommend this place to visit!
Vasily Shilov★★★☆☆
Food was nice, a little expensive, service took longer than we expected, because of that all dishes came at different time. Someone was waiting for main course, while others was done with food and just sitting.
Overall experience was nice, drinks were fast to arrive and asahi beer delirious as always. Great for one time dinner. Rolls was good, dishes like udon and salmon tartar was great, girls enjoyed.
During the summer make sure you sitting outside, it’s extremely hot inside.

Read the owner’s responses to low-star reviews. You will get a good idea of why service is so bad in this place.
Original review
The food is good, but the service is impressively slow and lacking.
Go and expect to receive a menu anytime between 30-60 minutes after self-seating. Expect to receive your food anytime between 60-90 minutes.
Lower your service expectations as much as possible, and you'll be happy. Don't expect to get napkins or plates.
Again, I must say. When you do get your food after a very, very long wait, the food is good. Is it amazing? No. Just good.
Added after receiving a reply
So, we entered the restaurant around 20:50
We received the menus around 21:25
We made the order around 21:35
We got our appetizers around 21:50
We got our main dish around 22:10
And paid and left the restaurant precisely at 22:30
I am not exaggerating at all. We are better positioned to be time conscious than whoever responded to this review. I'll make sure I send a food influencer next time, and ask her to take a picture of her watch to give you a reality check.
A business owner could have read my review and thought of the following questions, and tried to find solutions...
We're we over capacity?
Are we understaffed?
Are we overstaffed in certain areas?
Are we institutionalized enough? Following lean processes and standards?
Should we remove a table, or two, or three?
Do we need training?
How are others doing it? For instance, similar neighboring restaurants such as Le Palais de Jade?
How can we be more inclusive? Be able to accept tourists? Families? Big families with kids?
Instead, the business owner, or just “the owner” cause I don’t think they take reviews in a business sense but rather take them personally. Whoever responded to this review does not seem to be fond of my review—sending us the least sincere apology. They thanked us, a family with three children (two toddlers), for leaving the table messy. Well, you're welcome. It was a pleasure.

Asian fusion with a great vibe, superb drinks and wonderful service. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at OKO during our recent visit to Biarritz. We stopped by on a Saturday night for drinks and were amazed by the quality and originality of the cocktails crafted by Jezabel (OKO's mixologist). We were so impressed that we decided to return the following evening for dinner and more drinks. The food is a combination of Asian cuisine. We especially liked the Korean BBQ chicken, fried rice and gyoza. Juliette provided us with service in the dining room and she could not have been more friendly and professional. We finished the evening back at the bar where Jezabel amazed us with her unique and delicious cocktails. We especially enjoyed her Mumbai Dirty Chai and Caipirinuts cocktails. I highly recommend OKO if you are in Biarritz.

This place is about the only walkable ramen restaurant from Biarritz town centre. Located in a small open side mall. Great for a light meal and something other than French cuisine. Also it may be a little bit more expensive than what you get elsewhere.

I only tried the ramen. I had high hopes, and while the broth and toppings were not bad, but the noodles were terrible. They were soft and mushy, I couldn’t eat them. I’d like to come back, but try something else, as there are some good reviews.

Excellent Japanese restaurant, friendly atmosphere, good service and very well served and well made dishes. One of the best oriental restaurants in Biarritz. The only sin is that it's a bit far from the city center, but it's much better than the similar restaurants near the waterfront. Highly recommended.

Absolutely shockingly bad!! How this restaurant gets good reviews is beyond me. Every item was under seasoned barely cooked to any standard, no sauce on the lamb or fish main course, starters were horrible! DO NOT GO HERE! An absolute disrespect to French cooking. Horrible food!!! Cheap wines, unprofessional staff! Complete joke! We were a table of five and not one dish was remotely edible. We left the restaurant only 45 minutes after entering. So Bad!! We visited for Réveillon, and we could have not been more disappointed.
Service was very unprofessional. Two ladies served us the amuse-bouche and the starter together, even before we had been served drinks. When we asked what the main course would be, one of them answered: “Havent you checked the menu in advance?”. Well, no, we didnt because we didnt book the table in the first place; but even if we had, should we need to pass a test in order to know whats next?
Now, the biggest disappointment: food. Quality was so poor that we felt embarrassed for all the guests in the room. We felt like dogs trying to chew the meat. Desert was some sort of mousse au chocolat, though it was so liquid it could have well been served as a drink.
Finally: the atmosphere. We were rushed through the courses, only to see the doors opened at 22:30 to a crowd of already drunk people coming in from outside. If the goal was to make seated guests feel unwelcome and hurry them out, then mission accomplished—good luck for 2026, you will need it.
Gregory Faulkner★★★★☆
Fish was very fresh and tasty. Enjoyed everything except that we waited almost 45 minutes for 2 rolls and a nigiri and we were the first people in the restaurant. No clue how it could possibly take that long to complete the first order of the night. Other than the worlds slowest service the food was yummy and the atmosphere was pleasant.

Terrible service, never felt so ignored in a restaurant. Food was average for what it is, definitely not the best value for money. If you have a desperate craving for sushi then go for it.

Hello,
Back when the owner was still there, everything was great! It was a must-visit. Now there are two young people who are neither suited to running a restaurant nor to cooking... the rice is disgusting, dry, because some of it isn't seasoned with vinegar... in short, it's awful... I won't be going back.

Well who’d have expected to find this fine Korean restaurant in Biarritz of all places. The food was perfection. The May Garen (black egg) is one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted and I don’t like eggs. We took the BBQ tasting menu and there were many times when eyes rolled to the back of our heads in pleasure. And the service, I whispered gluten free and GF dishes appeared. And don’t forget to try a cocktail (yum!). Great service, beautiful wait staff. An absolute must visit. I’m planning my return already!

Very nice space. We had Korean barbecue. The meat was high-quality and all sides were super and felt like taken from a street in Seoul. We have been to Korea a lot and this place is definitely up there among the best Korean dishes that we’ve had. This is a gem that’s a bit hidden away on the outskirts of central Biarritz, well worth a slight detour. Very nice service as sugar on top!

Amazing spot. Very nice concept, where you grill your own meat / vegetables. We tried the "discovery" meat platter consisting in marinated beef, regular beef, and pork. They were all extra tender and tasty, and served with sides of rice, fresh vegetables, kimchi, leek salad, red cabbage and lettuce. Plenty of very tasty food, served on a convivial style table with the grill in the middle, nice wine list and very nice service. Would highly recommend, and will come back! Thank you.

I can't give a lower rating. The quality and quantity of the sushi were disappointing.
Being served in over 30 minutes for sushi that was already on a platter in the fridge was unacceptable! Heating the soy sauce in its plastic wrap in the dishes is simply unacceptable! I stated that the hot dishes were for my children and asked to remove the ginger to heat it up. They said yes, and to my surprise, it was still piping hot inside... thanks a lot!
We were just passing through the area. We will not be sharing this address.
Tips for Choosing the Right Japanese Restaurant in Biarritz
Navigating the Japanese food scene in Biarritz requires a slightly different approach than simply walking into the first sushi bar you see. Because the town attracts a high volume of tourists, quality can vary significantly between the beachfront tourist traps and the hidden gems tucked away on side streets. To ensure you have the best possible meal, consider the following practical tips before you make a reservation or order your first round of nigiri.
- Prioritize Local Fish over Imported Tuna: While bluefin tuna is a staple of sushi, Biarritz excels when serving local species. Look for menus featuring merlu (hake), rouget (red mullet), or turbot. These fish travel from the boat to the plate in hours, offering a flavor profile you cannot get from frozen imports.
- Sit at the Counter: If you want the full experience, request a seat at the sushi counter. This allows you to watch the chef’s technique, ask questions about the sourcing, and ensures your nigiri is eaten at the exact moment the rice is at body temperature and the fish is perfectly sliced.
- Look Beyond the Sushi Menu: A truly authentic Japanese kitchen in Biarritz will often offer cooked dishes that showcase seasonal Basque produce. Check for specials like agedashi tofu made with local Espelette pepper, or chawanmushi (savory egg custard) featuring local mushrooms. A diverse menu often indicates a chef with broader training.
- Ask About the Rice: The single biggest differentiator between a mediocre Japanese restaurant and an excellent one is the rice. It should be slightly warm, seasoned with a balanced rice vinegar blend, and hold together loosely without being mushy. If the restaurant advertises "sushi rice" as an afterthought, the fish is likely an afterthought too.
- Consider the Lunch Menu for Value: Dinner in Biarritz can be expensive, but many of the top Japanese establishments offer a menu du midi (lunch set). These lunch specials often feature the same quality of fish and technique at a fraction of the dinner price, making them the best way to experience a high-end kitchen on a budget.
The intersection of French coastal living and Japanese culinary discipline is a beautiful thing to witness. In Biarritz, you are not just eating a meal; you are experiencing a cultural dialogue between two nations that share a profound respect for the ocean and the seasons. Whether you opt for a simple platter of mixed sashimi or a multi-course tasting menu, the attention to detail in these kitchens is palpable.
As you walk off your meal along the illuminated promenade or through the narrow streets of the Port Vieux, you will likely find yourself already planning your next visit. The Japanese restaurants of Biarritz are not just a passing trend; they have become an essential part of the town’s gastronomic identity, offering a lighter, brighter alternative that perfectly complements the Atlantic lifestyle.
