12 Best Supermarkets in Biarritz

Shopping for groceries while traveling offers one of the most authentic glimpses into local life. In Biarritz, this experience is elevated by a unique blend of Basque culinary tradition and French coastal sophistication. Whether you are stocking a vacation rental for a beachside picnic or simply hunting for the perfect wedge of Ossau-Iraty cheese, the city’s food retail landscape is remarkably diverse. From sprawling hypermarkets on the outskirts to intimate, family-run Γ©piceries in the center, there is a shopping experience tailored to every need.

Navigating the grocery scene in a new city can often feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to balance quality with convenience. Biarritz differs from larger French metropolises; while it lacks a massive central supermarket in the immediate historic core, it compensates with a ring of highly accessible, premium options just minutes from the beach. Understanding where the locals go for their daily baguette versus their weekly stock-up is key to saving both time and money during your stay.

The Basque Country is renowned for its specific culinary identity, and the supermarkets here reflect that regional pride. You will find shelves dedicated to local piment d’Espelette, artisanal ciders, and the distinct Basque gateau. Unlike generic grocery chains, many stores in Biarritz heavily prioritize local sourcing, making even a mundane errand feel like a cultural discovery. This focus ensures that visitors can access high-quality regional products without necessarily visiting a specialty market.

Parking and accessibility are crucial factors to consider when choosing where to shop in this seaside resort town. During the high summer season, traffic near the coast can be heavy, making the easily accessible retail parks on the periphery particularly attractive. Conversely, if you are staying in the center or near Les Halles, a smaller city market or a compact supermarket might be the most practical choice for a quick top-up.

This guide is designed to cut through the guesswork and direct you to the best options based on quality, location, and product range. We have evaluated these stores based on their freshness of produce, strength of local product offerings, and overall shopping experience. Whether you are a budget traveler looking for staples or a gourmand seeking the finest regional delicacies, the following selections represent the pinnacle of grocery shopping in Biarritz.

Below is our curated list of the best places to satisfy your grocery needs, ranging from high-end organic shops to practical one-stop-shops. These selections prioritize not just the products on the shelves, but the overall convenience and value they offer to both residents and visitors.

Great selection of French wines. From 2-50e+fresh fruit and veg seems mostly to be local or at least from France. Nice fresh fish counter. Got some nice turbot . Very tasty but a little pricey. Have found food generally more expensive than in u.k

Very good access to airport and train station. It has fuel but is small and doesn’t have much stock so you can’t always get what you want. The quality is pretty good, so go to do a stock up rather than a full shop

It’s a carrefour supermarket. Had everything you need. Even found plenty of vegan / plant-based options in both chilled and freezer sections. Managed to find vegan pain au chocolate and croissants, plus vegan wine (Instants Gourmands Cote de Gascogne β€” that took a bit of searching and ironically had a picture of a lobster on the label).

It's ok for what it is. I often find it hard to find specific items but I'm also not French so it's hard to tell if this is my fault or the store's. However for most of your shopping needs this carrefour has good options and an attached bakery

Unfortunately, I had multiple bad experiences with this supermarket. The closing hours they promote online do not match the reality. Firstly, there were many occasions where a notice on a paper would notify the customers of earlier closing, which is fine but you won’t be aware of that if you are not on site. Just yesterday there were non of these papers. We wanted to buy one single thing at 7:55 pm. Even if they were to close at 8 pm (which they don’t; they should be open until 9 pm), there would have still been enough time, yet the staff refused everybody entry and not in a friendly/understanding way.
William R.β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†
Pretty good selection but the employees were gathered together in the back of the store passing phones back and forth sharing videos and blocking access for the customers. There were a group of us who could not pass the back isle. Not even an apology or excuse us. Prices here were even higher than the covered market for some items.
Dora lβ˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†
Your store at advertises hours until 8:00 pm. on Google and your website - but refused me and others entry TEN MINUTES EARLY. Your in-store β€œcut-off” sign is hidden online. This is dishonest and disrespectful to customers. Fix your hours
Anniβ˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†
Very rude service, the cashier kept us waiting while he chatted with his pal then did not greet us at all and kept chatting
M Tekβ˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†
I am extremely disappointed. This Carrefour closed about 10 minutes before the official closing time, which meant I couldn’t do my shopping. This is very frustrating for customers and, in my opinion, completely unacceptable. From a major store, I expect the posted opening hours to be respected. Situations like this do not reflect well on the city. I truly hope the team on duty takes this feedback seriously and ensures something like this doesn’t happen again.

Grand Frais is our favorite grocery store in France. The produce is consistently fresh, high quality, and reasonably priced, and they have a nice selection of organic fruits and vegetables. They offer a great variety of prepared foods, including soups, salads, fresh juices, and other easy grab-and-go options. Their fish selection is excellent as wellβ€”we’ve purchased both fresh salmon to cook at home and smoked salmon (lox), and both have been great. If you’re traveling through France with a rental car, Grand Frais is absolutely worth a stop. It’s a great place to stock up on healthy snacks, picnic supplies, fresh ingredients, or an easy meal while on the road. Excellent quality, good prices, and a much more enjoyable shopping experience than many other supermarkets.

This is a much better shopping experience then the previous supermarket we had visited on our holiday. There was a very good range of vegetables and fruit. The green beans were of excellant quality. There were also the more unusual items as well. The array of beers was good, including some craft basque ales from nearby. Why can't UK supermarkets source some local produce. Parking was easy, but getting out was a little difficult, constant stream of vehicles coming around the round about. Yes I can recommend this supermarket without hesitation.

An excellent superstore with a wide range of products. The fresh produce was high quality and the wine selection was good. We visited twice whilst staying on a nearby campsite spending nearly 400 euros. Our only complaint was the car parking. Our motorhome was too high to access the plentiful places in the centre of the car park. There are several 'camping car only' spaces on the perimeter. Unfortunately most of these were occupied by ordinary cars despite many ordinary spaces being available. We had to drive 3 times around the car park before a suitable space became available on our last visit and there were several other motorhomes doing the same thing.

Camille and the team were fantastic. You can walk here from the airport and pick up an incredibly good value hire car. It could not have been more easy and I'd recommend them over all the other major brand alternatives. There did not seem to be any of the complex extra's you often get - all you have to do is return it clean! Recommend.

I just stopped by to refuel at the gazoline station. I cannot judge the rest. But I have to say that the gazoline station is not well designed. It is located at the end of a parking. Either the parking lot than the station car line are very narrow. The queue at the station is very messy for this reason and the manouvre to exit is also very uncomfortable. Also for a technical problem, the diesel hose is not working correctly and you risk to overflow some gazoline. I think this problem will be fixed, seems to be temporarily.

I came to drop off a package of books via Mondial Relay. The staff were unfriendly and turned me away, claiming they don't accept packages over 3.5 kg. This doesn't comply with Mondial Relay's policy, which accepts packages well over 10 kg. If this bothers you, have the honesty to withdraw from the Mondial Relay service. However, even a refusal on your part should have been courteous. This greatly reflects poorly on the Carrefour brand. Avoid this store.

A very bad experience. Yesterday, I went to Carrefour City and the employee named Donovan refused to open the door for us even though there were still five minutes left before the official closing time. Another customer and I were completely baffled by this situation. The posted hours must be respected, especially when there is still time before closing (the store closes at 8:56 pm). Unprofessional behavior and a lack of consideration for customers. Very disappointing.

Tips for Shopping at Supermarkets in Biarritz

Shopping in Biarritz comes with a few local nuances that can significantly enhance your experience if you know what to expect. While the mechanics of grocery shopping are universal, the French and Basque approach to food retail involves specific etiquette regarding produce, bags, and timing. Understanding these details will not only make your trip smoother but also help you shop like a local rather than a tourist.

1. Bring Your Own Bags and Weigh Your Produce
Plastic bags are largely phased out in France, so you will need to bring sturdy reusable totes or purchase them at the checkout. Additionally, in the produce section, you are expected to weigh and label your fruits and vegetables using the digital scales provided in the aisle. If you forget to print the price sticker, you may find yourself holding up the line at the register.

2. Look for the "Filière Locale" Signage
Most major supermarkets in the area, particularly Carrefour and E.Leclerc, have dedicated sections or shelf tags highlighting products sourced from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. If you want the authentic taste of the Basque Country, look for signage indicating local origin. This is often where you will find the best value for cheeses, cured meats, and wines that are specific to this corner of France.

3. Be Aware of Sunday and Lunchtime Closures
While Biarritz is a tourist town, many of the smaller supermarkets and specialty grocers still observe traditional French hours. Most stores are closed on Sunday afternoons, and some smaller shops may close for a two-hour lunch break between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Plan your major shopping trips for weekday mornings or Saturday to avoid finding locked doors.

4. Don’t Skip the Wine Aisle
The wine selection in Biarritz supermarkets is often exceptional, featuring a deep focus on Bordeaux, Madiran, and IroulΓ©guy appellations. Even the budget-friendly selections are curated with a level of care that is rare in other countries. Take your time browsing the regional reds and rosΓ©s; you can often find bottles from local vineyards for under 10 euros that would cost triple that in a restaurant.

5. Separate Your Visits: Hypermarket vs. Market
For the best quality-to-price ratio, adopt a two-tier strategy. Use the larger hypermarkets on the outskirts for heavy items like water, snacks, and household staples. However, for bread, pastries, and fresh seafood, always defer to the dedicated boulangeries and the fishmongers at Les Halles. Supermarket bread in France is rarely as good as that from a dedicated bakery, and the difference in price is negligible.

Understanding the rhythm and rules of local grocery shopping allows you to immerse yourself more fully in the Biarritz lifestyle. It transforms a basic necessity into an opportunity to discover the flavors that define the French Basque Country. By choosing the right store for the right task, you ensure that your mealsβ€”whether a simple apartment dinner or an elaborate beach picnicβ€”are filled with the highest quality ingredients.

Ultimately, the best supermarket is the one that fits your specific location and culinary ambitions. With a mix of local markets, organic co-ops, and comprehensive supermarchΓ©s, Biarritz offers a grocery landscape that is as varied and vibrant as its famous coastline. Take your time, explore the aisles, and enjoy the delicious process of stocking your kitchen in this beautiful corner of France.
