17 Best Restaurants in Lyon

Lyon sits at the culinary crossroads of France, where the rich, buttery traditions of the north collide with the sun-drenched olive oils and herbs of Provence. It is a city that doesn’t just serve food; it venerates it. Here, dining is not a mere necessity but a civic pastime, celebrated in spaces ranging from ancient silk-weaving workshops to avant-garde temples of gastronomy.

The city’s unique geography gifts its chefs with an embarrassment of riches. Within a short drive, you find the Charolais cattle of Burgundy, the free-range Bresse chickens of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the freshwater fish of Alpine lakes, and the deep, mineral-driven wines of Beaujolais and the Rhône Valley. This proximity to source is the secret behind the city’s enduring reputation as the gastronomic capital of the world.

While Paris may dominate the global conversation about French cuisine, Lyon is where the French themselves go to eat. The local dining culture is defined by the bouchon, a distinctly Lyonnais institution that serves hearty, offal-centric, and wine-soaked comfort food in a convivial, often cramped, atmosphere. These are not tourist traps but living museums of regional identity.

However, limiting yourself to tradition would be a mistake. A new wave of chefs has transformed Lyon into a laboratory for modern French gastronomy, earning the city more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere else. They respect the terroir but are unafraid to deconstruct it, plating dishes that are as visually stunning as they are delicious.

Navigating this landscape requires a local’s insight. You need to know which bouchon is serving the most authentic quenelle de brochet, where to find a perfectly executed tasting menu, and which neighborhood wine bar has the best natural wine list. This guide is designed to cut through the noise.

Whether you are planning a romantic weekend, a business trip, or a gastronomic pilgrimage, this list curates the essential tables in Lyon. From the hallowed halls of Paul Bocuse’s empire to the humble counters of Croix-Rousse, here are the definitive places to eat in this magnificent city.

ART was such a great experience! We had the pornstar martinis which were so good, and the ceviche was amazing. The beef Wellington was definitely one of my favorites too — everything was really delicious and beautifully done. The service was also incredible. Fabio, the manager, was so friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout the whole night. He really made us feel taken care of and made the experience even better. Definitely recommend checking out ART if you’re in Lyon! Great food, great drinks, and even better service!

Absolutely loved our dinner at ART in Lyon. The servers were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, helping us with recommendations not only for dinner but also for our trip around Lyon. It was genuinely a masterclass in hospitality, and they were truly the highlight of the experience, which is high praise considering how phenomenal and inventive the food and drinks were as well. To start, we had the gooseberry and tequila pear cocktails, both of which were magnificent. The gooseberry cocktail had a lovely tartness, while the pear cocktail was sweet with an incredible spicy edge that made it especially memorable. For food, we began with the bone marrow beef tartare, which had an incredible depth of flavor, followed by the ceviche, beautifully executed with a bright citrus sauce. We finished with their signature Beef Wellington, which was cooked perfectly. The beef was a flawless medium rare, and the pastry was buttery, flaky, and crisp. Our server also recommended a glass of Beaujolais to pair with the Wellington, and it complemented the dish wonderfully. ART is truly a gem: beautiful ambiance, exceptional hospitality, and incredibly creative flavors throughout. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Lyon.

Made my wife cry! Orginally had booked with the intent of grabbing their popular beef wellington, but after being offered the dégustation it seemed like a good option since it includes a half portion of the beef wellington. That was the best decision ever made! The entire 8 course menu was perfect end to end, and the main course of the beef wellington gave my wife tears of joy. The server explained each and every dish, in detail, and really was an awesome experience. I would highly recommend making a booking at ART, because it certainly makes the reputation of Lyon being the gastronomic capital of France true.

The food was truly amazing. Fresh, fragrant, tasty. We had the Beef Wellington and the Veal. A delicious bread "roll" came out late, but just as well, otherwise we would have been too full to enjoy our meals. The champagne was excellent.

I had been anticipating ART for months leading up to our trip, and unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. Good but inconsistent food (3.5/5 food) paired with bad service (2/5 service), all at a high price point. I really wanted to love this place, and it has a lot of promise. We started with the octopus dish and the roast beef. The octopus was unfortunately very rubbery and lacked any tenderness at all. The presentation itself was lovely and all the complimentary flavors, like the pea puree, were delicious. But the star protein of the dish—the octopus—was itself bland, chewy, and rubbery. The roast beef, however, was actually quite tasty, and stole the show for act 1. It was super soft, cold, and melted in your mouth. The stracciatella and pomegranate reduction paired exceptionally with it. The straccitella added a creamy touch to the dish, and the reduction added a sweetness that balanced out the acid from the pickled onions and mustard that top the dish. And to top off what would thus so far be a very soft and creamy dish, some crisps were added to the top to add some much needed texture. Overall, the beef was excellent, but the octopus was subpar and lacking of much needed tenderness. Moving on to mains, we got the “must-try” beef Wellington and hen dish. The beef Wellington was great—no doubt about it. But unfortunately, one of the wellington filets was split at the bottom—that is, a thick layer of fat broke the beef on one side of the filet. The splitting itself was not an issue, but what was an issue is that the fat on the front was cooked and rendered down, but towards the back of the filet, the fat was completely raw. This made it a tad unappetizing to finish and was a let down considering this is obviously not a tartare. One would expect all the fat in a seared and baked filet to actually be cooked. Additionally, the cook was not perfectly consistent with each Wellington we received, and even with the fat cooked down in the other two, one would still expect the perfect temperature to be medium-rare, not a cold rare, which was the temperature for all three. In sum, raw fat in one Wellington, and cold rare cook on all wellingtons. One could say this is a preference, and I would concur. Some enjoy their steaks rare. But what contributed to the disappointment was that we requested medium rare. And even if we had requested rare, we would expect it to not be cold. Hen dish was not mine, but it looked tasty and was tasty according to the guest who got it. Now, on to the big reason regarding the rating of this review: regarding service, getting a hold of one of the waitresses was nearly impossible, and if you did, they seemed to forget and you would have to repeat the process of flagging them down and asking again. Dirty dishes lay on the table for a while before they were picked up. Waitresses would not attend to the table after each course was finished. At one point, we looked at our watches and noticed that 30 minutes had passed since finishing our entrees, and not a single waitress came in to clean the table or check up on us for the next course. We also were right next to the door, with them going back and forth, so it was not that they couldn’t see us. Finally, when we got fed up with waiting or trying to flag down staff, we decided to leave, so we asked to pay the check—a process that that took another 20 minutes to get to our table. Ultimately, about 60 minutes passed from our last course to getting the check—60 minutes of giving benefit of the doubt to seemingly busy waiting staff and trying to flag them down. Overall, over the course of visiting Europe for multiple years, I have yet to receive service this subpar. This by no means comes from a place of entitlement, but comes from a place of expectations of restaurant standards, especially from a place that seemingly champions themselves and holds themselves to a high standard.

The authentic ambiance looks great, and the service is friendly. I like the greeting with the complimentary deli dish. Then, I got 2 cheeses, cervelle de canut and saint Marcelline, they were both very tasty. Then trout with leek and other vegetables was great. The desserts weren't as impressive. I also liked the half bottle wine and the bread.overall, it was a pleasant visit.

An excellent restaurant. We each ordered a starter and a main course for lunch, and everything was delicious and very well executed. The wines were a great match for the meal, and the herbal digestif at the end was a fantastic finishing touch. Our server was very friendly, and the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. We had a wonderful lunch.

This was the first place I went to after I arrived in Lyon, and im so glad I did! The food was amazing, great price-quality,nice and quiet atmosphere, but the best was Alain, he gave such an excellent service, he was so kind and so helpful, even helped me with some recommendations of activities and places to visit in Lyon! If you read this, thank you so much Alain! I 100% recommend this place!
Marc Alfred★★★★★
I went to lunch there June 25, 2026 and the food was to die for. I ordered 2 appetizers and the plat du jour which was carpaccio de boeuf. The pâté en croute was the best I had in a very long time with foie gras inside and the onion jam that comes with it is amazing . If you have to try one dish there, I would go for that. I also had tatin de pieds de cochon et escargots persillés which was also really good.
Jonathan Chew★★★★★
A nice restaurant serving local fare. About €20 per main with the option to have a set at €32 which includes an additional starter and dessert – essentially you're getting a dessert for free with the set, since the starters average about €12. Fantastic food that was bursting with flavour, and we ordered a variety to share. An easy first place would be the pork tenderloin, which was tasty and multi-layered in flavour. The food can take quite a while to arrive however, which may also just be a norm based on local culture.

Nice atmosphere, friendly service, and fair prices. I ordered the traditional pike quenelle, which unfortunately wasn’t to my taste, but that’s more about my personal preference than the restaurant itself. The other two plates were tasty. I’d happily come back to try one of the meat dishes next time.

Great first Bouchon experience. The servers were friendly and were able to speak in French and English with us. The food is really heavy so we walked away with full stomachs. We had the 34,50€ meal each with sparkling water (5€) which came with an appetizer, main, and dessert. For the appetizers we tried the beef tongue salad which was AMAZING, and the pâté croûte which tasted good but the texture was on the drier side and the crust was okay. We ordered Quenelle Lyonnaise (pike fish soufflé in lobster sauce with rice) each. The sauce was rich in texture and flavour but the soufflé was soft and light, which was a great contrast. The brown parts on the edge tasted so good when mixed into the sauce. It was also great for dipping bread into. Dessert was the ganache and classic praline tart. They both tasted great, though the praline tart was suuuper sweet. Overall had a great time. Definitely make reservations as it was packed full at opening.

We went here for our final meal during a two-week trip to Lyon. It was the third bouchon we tried while in the area, and the food was really good. As we had read beforehand, it's not necessarily a traditional bouchon, but rather a more contemporary take on the concept. The restaurant was small and busy, with a surprising number of families and children, which gave it a lively atmosphere. I ordered the grilled pork, along with the basil and zucchini soup and a rice pudding-style dessert. All three were really good. The portions were a little smaller than at some of the other bouchons and bistros we visited over the previous two weeks, but the quality of the food was excellent. The servers were very friendly and accommodating, especially as I tried to speak French. They were encouraging and patient, which I really appreciated. They were also very attentive to food allergies, answered all of our questions, and were happy to make accommodations where needed, which was thoughtful and reassuring.

Omg. We have been in France for a month and this was the best meal yet. Life changing chicken and when zucchini can be as interesting as tomatoes in gazpacho you have a win. 1000/10

We went twice in a row for dinner and were amazed by the very fine interpretation of the local dishes. The staff was super nice and very helpful. Looking forward to going back next time we're in Lyon.

Excellent dinner and creative courses. We enjoyed the fish cooked in bees wax which was a first and the langoustines and wagyu were superb. Staff were lovely and friendly and it was very nice to meet the chef. Thank you again for a fantastic evening.

Le Neuvième Art was one of the best dinners of my life. A couple Americans with no Michelin dining experience, we did not know what to expect. We dressed nicely but not super formal. We felt welcomed and invited from the start, but not pretentiously examined. The food was delicious. Every course was unique and popping with flavor. As I look at the images I am posting, I can distinctly remember the flavor and my mouth waters again. I cannot say that about most meals. Our wine was wonderful, and 3 hours flew by in a blink. For our first true fine dining experience, we were blown away. Wonderful!

We've had a really great time, the food and wine were amazing for the most of it (we've had 1 dish that we didn't really like, the asparagus, and some wines didn't match well and we're not up to par compared to the dishes). All in all great experience, but a tad too pricey for my opinion.

Such a wonderful and intime night on the last day of 2025. The service and dishes are incredible! The scallop dish was insane!

This Michelin restaurant in Lyon is worth every dollar spent. From amuse bouche to petite fours, I thorough enjoyed myself, the taste of every course is on point. Bonus to cooking the char in beeswax in front of us. The service is also very good, not too much, you can sense the awareness of the service staff. Ambience wise is simple and elegant, nothing too over -the-top. I highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions, you will walk out happy and very full!

Really good overall. Well deserved high ratings. The food was excellent, and the restaurant looks great inside too. I’d say its more of a fun casual vibe place with great food and amazing decor. The pasta stood out most, especially the ribbon style one, which is not something you get at many places. Everything we had was full of flavour, and the pasta dishes had a really nice aroma. Cocktails were amazing too. Love many of the interesting selections. The beef was really well done, the fried potato on the side was spot on, and dessert finished things off nicely, especially the ice cream and apple crumble. Recommended to book in advance.

It was a lovely experience. My sister and I had dinner on the lower floor. The atmosphere on the ground floor and the lower floor is quite different, but I think both are nice in their own way🌸 The food was good—we had pasta and pizza, and both were enjoyable. For dessert, we ordered tiramisu, which was also very good. I had previously dined at this restaurant’s London branch, and the menu and flavors were very similar. The only issue I had was that the service felt a bit slow. For example, when our dessert arrived, no dessert cutlery was brought to the table. We couldn’t mention it right away because we couldn’t see any waitstaff for quite a while. By the time the dessert spoons arrived, a significant amount of time had passed. I completely understand that dinner service can be busy, but having to wait that long before being able to eat our dessert didn’t feel quite right. Other than that, we didn’t experience any problems and enjoyed our visit🥂
Winston Khoo★★★★★
An amazing restaurant deserving the high rating. Food & service are both excellent but what stands out as you move into the caverns of this place is that each dining room is decorated differently, like moving through a portal into different regions of a country. My two kids enjoyed not just the food but the whole experience including the special truffle pasta and the desserts.
Aras Arıkan★★★★★
This was one of the most interesting and unusual restaurants I've ever experienced. First of all, I have to say that you absolutely must make a reservation, otherwise you'll have to wait in long queues outside for minutes. By the way, making a reservation doesn't mean you'll sit there for a long time. Your reservation is actually for a 1-1.5 hour time slot, as that's what the restaurant expects. Now, let's talk about the atmosphere... I haven't seen such detailed and meticulously decorated decor in a long time. Everything is beautifully thought out; you constantly feel the need to look around while you eat. Besides the beautiful atmosphere, the food is equally delicious and presented wonderfully. I couldn't find a single negative thing about this place. If you come to Lyon, you absolutely must visit this place before you leave.
RR★★★★☆
The ambiance is superb, romantic and charming. The food was ok but nothing to write much about. Similar to its other restaurants in London, the focus in on ambience and experience. Pasta was very chewy but starters were refreshing. Pleasant experience for sure.

Amazing food. Started off with an amuse bouche. Onion soup. Knocked it out of the park and the rest of the meal just kept surpassing the previous dish. We did the tasting menu. Have an allergy to shellfish , they were able to substitute the oyster dish for us with an incredible tomato gazpacho. Incredible. Staff was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations on which wines paired nicely with the dishes. Will be coming back to Monsieur P the next time we find ourselves in Lyon.

This is great, upscale restaurant at the heart of Lyon serving up a nice twist on French dishes. Atmosphere is traditional, yet relaxed. Service is very high quality and friendly. Went for a lunch and had tried myself through a few of their dishes. All cooked to perfection. Highly recommend for an extravagant, yet relaxed experience. - Value for money? Yes - Worth a detour? Yes - Best for (occasion)? Classy lunch or dinner - Would I go back? Yes

We feel so lucky to have stumbled upon this lovely restaurant when we only had 2 nights in Lyon. The food was amazing and the service so generous and thoughtful. We shared entree and dessert and instead of placing one dish and 2 side plates, each was served up beautifully on individual plates as a half portion! Our waiter was amazing with his timely attention and his wine recommendations were perfectly paired to our courses. Cannot recommend highly enough!

My wife and I enjoyed a splendid lunch at L’Atelier des Augustins in early April. Service was polished and professional throughout our meal. We opted for the three course surprise tasting menu and we were dazzled by the creativity and skill evident in each beautifully presented dish. From the amuses-bouches to the mignardises, everything was delicious. In short, we were thrilled with our experience at this lovely restaurant and would highly recommend it.

Tucked into the heart of Lyon, the kitchen runs a surprise tasting menu sourced within 200km of the city. You surrender control at the door and are rewarded handsomely for it. I did not expect a salad to be among the most exciting things I've eaten in my life. I was wrong. The wine pairing was exceptional. The service was great and the setting quietly beautiful. One Michelin star but deerves more!! Highly, recommended.
Davon Halim★★★★★
Selected the lunch tasting menu for €59. This is a three-course meal with an amuse-bouche to start and mignardises to end. Dishes were creative, and all of them were delicious. For the main, you can choose between meat or fish (and you can order vegetarian during booking as well). I had the duck which was very tasty indeed. The dessert, as one comes to expect from restaurants like this, was complex with a range of flavours: sweet, savoury, sour. As someone with a very sweet tooth, I was glad to discover that the mignardises included a sweet milk lollipop, rather reminiscent of pastillas de leche. Service was warm, friendly and well-timed, and English was available for those, like me, not quite ready to understand a tasting menu in French. The restaurant was welcoming and not pretentious. Certainly for the lunch service, it is perfectly appropriate to dress business casual.

Wonderful experience, with impeccable service all along. All products are fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced, which allows the Chef and his team to focus on taste and oh how tasteful everything is : you can literally feel every product at each bite, and the clever mixes arranged by the kitchen. Strongly recommend, this proper, modern, Michelin star experience at affordable price.

Great food and even greater atmosphere! Got some Spanish black pudding as a starter and then onglet steak with octopus. Everything was flavourful and well seasoned. We had a very nice bottle of Saint Joseph white with that. But what makes this restaurant very different than a lot of others is the owner and the ambiance he's creating in the place. Will definitely come back and will recommend to any one who want to have a great diner while having a blast !!

Amazing place, Food was spectacular! Had the razor mussels as starter and the duck and lobster as main, Partner had the croquettes as starter and the sirloin steak as main. Very happy to have been squeezed in for an early dinner on a Friday night after emailing and checking - fantastic food and service, so glad we enquired! This was one of the three bouchons we visited while staying in Lyon for two weeks, and wow, were we impressed. The restaurant is quite small, so I'd definitely recommend booking well in advance. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to come back a second time, but when we tried to book again just a few days later, it was already full. That alone says a lot about how much we liked it and how popular they are. The décor is charming and cozy, and the food was unbelievable. It was easily one of the best meals we had during our two weeks in Lyon. The quenelle was amazing. The accompanying root vegetables and onions were flavorful, buttery, and perfectly seasoned. The crème brûlée was excellent, the bread was fantastic, and the carrot soup with citrus was unimaginably good. The two servers who looked after us were incredibly charming, funny, warm, and welcoming. I mentioned that this was a good opportunity for me to practice my French, and they never let me forget it. They would joke around and make playful comments in French to see if I understood what they were saying, which made the whole experience even more memorable. About half of the people in the restaurant seemed to be speaking English, so they can certainly accommodate visitors who don't speak French. That said, they were also wonderfully encouraging when I tried to speak French. This was definitely one of the standout experiences of our entire two weeks in Lyon. I would absolutely recommend coming here for dinner!

We enjoyed our meal at Le Musée! The staff was cool and we had a good time chatting with the people sitting near us. Sausage in brioche was a highlight, as was the fish of the day. Half-and-half dessert was a good combo. Glad we dined here!

Just amazing. The food is simply delicious, there’s not much to say. The whole place, from the dishes to the staff, exudes a warm and caring soul. The gateau with chicken liver is something I will remember for a very very long time. You simply cannot miss this if U’re in lyon (Also quite cheap)

We had an amazing dinner here! The food was delicious, the service was great, and the vibe of the restaurant is really unique. I truly enjoyed the whole experience. The only small thing to mention is that we were charged a $6 tax for two people at the end of the meal. I wasn't sure what it was for, so just a heads-up to other diners to CHECK YOUR BILL. Aside from that, it was a wonderful evening!

Absolutely amazing food. We had the quenelle and it was soft while the lobster sauce was rich and creamy. We also had the andouillette and for me, who likes to eat small intestine, it was perfect. The server was very patient and friendly, and also recommended a bakery for us to try a praline brioche. I wish we could eat here again during our stay

The food and atmosphere were delightful! The andouillettes were delicious and incredibly tender. The octopus was superb. The dessert rounded off our excellent dinner. Thanks to the staff for the very polite and attentive service! The restaurant is located on a very quiet and cozy street in Old Lyon...

This was recommended by a local, he said this is a great spot in Vieux Lyon, and he was right. We were lucky to get a table for lunch as it got very crowded on a weekday. The server was kind and attentive. Delicious food with different options.

Look no further, this place is an absolute delight. From beginning to end, service superb. Beautiful situation looking towards the beautiful marionette clock. Food outstanding and I am fussy. Great vegetarian options a bonus. Star dishes, black pudding and hummus. Prunes in red wine just devine and pannacotta the best. We were so lucky finding this restaurant.

Outstanding fine dining restaurant in Old Lyon. The service was absolutely superb with a modern atmosphere. The chef came and spoke with us herself, a heartwarming family business with 3 siblings (2 chefs, 1 front of house). We ordered the 5-course tasting menu of Italy and 4-course tasting menu with wine pairings. Each dish was beautifully plated, perfectly balanced, and deliciously seasoned. They also spoke English, which made us feel even more comfortable as American travelers. Highly recommend!

Great little family-run restaurant in the old part of Lyon. Different tasting menus with wine pairings are offered. The quality of the food is only surpassed by the quality of the service. Lovely staff and kozy atmosphere makes this a place you'd like to visit again.

Exceptional! Our son was here in June and had such a memorable evening that when we mentioned we would be visiting this month in Lyon, it was his first thought that we dine here. Every course was exceptionally executed and on point. The service matched the meal, again exceptional! Michelin take notice.

Tucked away in Lyon’s old town, this charming, family-owned restaurant is a true culinary treasure. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with genuine warmth by a family who clearly takes great pride in their food, service, and the experience they create for every guest. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, blending rustic charm with elegant touches that make you feel both at home and somewhere special. The passion of the owners shines through in every detail—from the attentive, friendly service to the beautifully crafted dishes that arrive at your table. Each plate is a work of art, thoughtfully presented and bursting with flavor. The kitchen masterfully combines textures and tastes in a way that feels both fresh and exciting, yet deeply comforting. Every bite is a reminder of how food can tell a story—one of tradition, creativity, and love. The wine selection is offers great options that perfectly complement the menu. Speaking of the menu, there are several to choose from, each offering a multi-course journey that will leave you completely satisfied (and very full—so come hungry!). Despite the number of courses, the portions are generous, ensuring no one leaves wishing for more. In short, this restaurant is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the soul of Lyon through food. It's more than just a meal—it’s a warm, delicious memory waiting to be made. Ps. Menu available on English and the staff all speak English
Michael Vladimirov★★☆☆☆
This restaurant, offering a tasting menus (€60, 90, 120 and 200), presents itself as fine dining. I tried the €120 menu. Overall, it felt like I had already eaten most of these dishes elsewhere — in mid-range restaurants. The flavors were flat, lacking depth or creativity. The absence of any original taste combinations is the only lasting impression I took away from the evening. The presentation of the dishes lacked character. Three different courses were served on identical black plates, which felt uninspired. The bread was terrible — if you press it with a knife or your finger, it just sticks together. You could use it instead of clay. The dining room tries to look designer, but the tables are made of plastic designed to imitate black marble, and the ceiling is painted with a shiny, reflective paint that feels out of place. The cloth towels in the restroom smelled musty and not fresh. I do not recommend dining at this restaurant.

We visited on a Tuesday evening in mid-May. The plats, the fish of the day and the beef, were excellent , as were the entrees. The presentations were superb and the overall service was excellent. Wine pairings complimented the meal well. This was one of our best meals in the nearly three weeks we spent in southern France. Would definitely recommend and return.

Everything is perfect! Friendly staff and amazing food. I had a 5-course tasting menu. The fish is great but the lamb is a bit dry. Overall both main dishes are good. The jelly served with cheese is surprisingly matched. The dessert is my favorite!

We chose this restaurant for a romantic meal out and made a reservation a few days beforehand. When we arrived, Justine and Julien made us feel so welcome and both speak excellent English. The decor is a great blend of modern, comfortable dining with the embroidered napkins adding a real touch of luxury. We opted for the 3 course meal for €45 with a glass of paired wine with the starter and main. The food was creative, delicious and presented beautifully. We're on a grand tour of France at the moment and this was one of the best meals we've had anywhere. We would highly recommend you visit this restaurant.

If you're looking for French fine dining cuisine, this is the place. We had some delicious dishes where everything was prepared to perfection. The duck , the scallops, the beef...just perfect. The service was very gentle, pleasant and informative. We loved the side dishes as well. The bill at the end was around 250 eur including champagne and digestive, so price/quality was on point. I would absolutely recommend ❣️

Mixed bag. We arrived. Restaurant was almost empty, we all had coats, we were 5 women, no one offered to take our coats. Amuse bouche was still cold from the fridge. Appetizer and main were delicious. I had pumpkin ravioli with foi gras and the scallops with chestnut creame. They could have been more welcoming in arrival, that kinda set the tone for us. Food was good, except temp of amuse bouche, oh and we had a vegetarian person with us, and we had reserved the day before, so plenty of time to prepare something. But her main consisted of only the side dishes for the meat and fish. That was disappointing. So , not really sure I would recommend.

Very classical cuisine - truly great. Visited for the 2nd time... They have some classic dishes on the menu - they seem to evolve over time however. We went there for lunch which I can really recommend. Loved their foie gras with artichokes. Also the sweetbreads with targetes were fantastic and their spider crab with caviar. Sublime...

What an experience that we had at La Mère Brazier. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and the restaurant was just cozy and elegant. I usually don't enjoy dessert, but I am glad we ordered it to share between the two of us at La Mère Brazier. At the end of the service, we were offered madeleine in a cute to-go wrapper bag (because we were so full) and it was such a delicious madeleine (even when we ate it the next day)❤️

Stopped in just before they closed and they welcomed us in even though the kitchen was about to close. We grabbed a couple of glasses of red and had the cheese pastry entre and the croquette then had the brownie and chocolate cookie fondue. It was amazing!!

Was recommended so thought to try! Now one of the appetisers- the asparagus with Dan Dan style was definitely great! The sauce was awesome. But let me tell you about all else, the scotch egg starter was super mediocre. But what killed this place was the mislabelled takgalbi chicken. It was clear no one in this kitchen has ever been to Korea and had actual takgalbi. My Korean friend was so disappointed and we were about to complain about how misleading the menu was. Fine one bad main. But the beef was also nothing to write home about. Then on top of that they gave the sweetest glazed upon, sickeningly sweet. There's no need for that much sugar. All the French Asian twists were a disaster. Super slow service making bad food. So just don't order what we did. Probably get the carbonara with pork that looked good. Infidels - never again.

The food was excellent as was the wine by the glass. I had the sea bream with salsa verde and tiger’s milk. The flavors were surprising and delicious. I had sea bream at Paul Bocuse’s Fond Rose recently and this was far superior. Other dishes were just as high quality.

Amazing french dishes with a small hint of fusion with asian flavour. The overall flavour was rich and the sauces were very unique, matched well with the beautifully cooked beef and the tender chicken. The staff were nice and friendly.

Before our trip to Lyon, I spent quite a bit of time researching local restaurants and menus, and this was one of the the places on my list. We visited on our first day, and it was absolutely worth it! It’s best to make a reservation, as there’s usually a queue, although it moves fairly quickly if you decide to wait. We tried several traditional Lyonnaise dishes, including quenelle, andouillette, cervelle de canut, and the Lyonnaise salad, and everything was delicious. The atmosphere was wonderful, the food was authentic, the staff were very friendly, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. Easily one of the best dining experiences we had in Lyon !!
Loo Yeo★★★★★
At 44 Rue Saint-Jean, Le Vieux Lyon brings the bouchon meal into a house that still shows the depth of Saint-Jean. Behind the restaurant frontage is a protected building formed from two older homes, with small courtyards, spiral stair towers, medieval cellar masonry and a restored façade of mullions, transoms and limewash. The menu stays close to the old Lyonnais repertoire: quenelle de brochet with écrevisses sauce, tablier de sapeur, tête de veau, saucisson chaud, andouillette and tarte aux pralines. That breadth gives the meal its character. The salade lyonnaise had the right warm, rustic balance of crisp leaves, lardons, croutons, poached egg and bright dressing. The quenelle was the clearest anchor: a large browned oval, soft and pale inside, set in a crayfish sauce with enough body to carry the dish. The praline tart closed the meal with colour, gloss and sweetness still firmly tied to Lyon. This could well be one of your best dining memories in Lyon.
Grace Trinkl★★★★★
We arrived at noon and chose a nice outdoor table at this restaurant tucked among so many with outside tables on both sides of the walkway of Rue Saint-Jean. Our server, Johann, was attentive and informative as we perused the menu. We decided on the Le Menu Lyonnais as well as a Salade Lyonnaise, along with a very nice bottle of Gigondas (one of our favorites wines back in the States). The service was prompt and the food absolutely delicious. As part of the Menu Lyonnais, my husband had the sausage in brioche with green salad as a starter and the chicken supreme with porcini mushroom sauce and homemade fries. SOO tasty!! I chose the Salade Lyonnaise, because one cannot come to Lyon without eating their famous salad. Absolutely delicious!! While the initial size seemed overwhelming, in true French fashion we took our time, and both finished everything. Le Vieux Lyon…another delicious restaurant in Lyon which came recommended by Les Frenchies! All in all, a beautiful day outdoors with a tasty meal and wine! We would highly recommend Le Vieux Lyon! PS, They have the quaintest women’s restroom but be sure to duck if you are tall!!

Le Vieux Lyon Restaurant is located at 44 rue Saint-Jean, in a charming pedestrian street, and offers an authentic experience of traditional Lyonnais gastronomy. The restaurant features a few outdoor tables in front of the establishment and two dining rooms inside: one in the basement, ideal for discretion and tranquility, and another on the ground floor, beautifully decorated with various historical portrait paintings and a large wall fresco. A special mention goes to the restroom, which is truly unique. Its entrance door is only 1.60 meters high and shaped like an arch, creating a very original atmosphere. Once inside, the typical Lyonnais wall and floor tiles wonderfully enhance the charm of the place. Saint-Jean Parking is only a 200-meter walk along the riverbank, with a very reasonable flat rate of €3 for the whole night. Whether for lunch or dinner, it is highly recommended to make a reservation in advance. The welcome and service are impeccable, with extremely friendly and attentive staff. At the end of our meal, the manager kindly took the time to briefly explain the history behind the portraits displayed in the dining room, which was a real privilege. With a set menu priced at only €32, you'll definitely struggle to finish all the dishes up to dessert. The food is entirely homemade, authentically Lyonnais, and prepared with carefully selected fresh ingredients. Without hesitation, we will return and highly recommend this restaurant
Plamen Nikolov★★★★☆
A lovely spot right in the heart of the old town! Le Vieux Lyon has a charming, ancient style that perfectly matches the historic surroundings. The atmosphere feels authentic and welcoming, with attentive service and friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The food was good overall, and we especially enjoyed the ravioli — definitely a highlight of the meal. Reservations are recommended, as the restaurant tends to fill up quickly, especially in the evenings. A great place to experience classic French cuisine in an old-town setting!

Insane value for money, with absolutely amazing dishes (€35 for the basic 3-course menu that includes also an appetizer, interlude and pre-dessert!!)! The food was phenomenal, the vibe was great, the pacing of the meal was comfortable. Even though neither of us likes the agastache chocolate dessert (we don't like licorice/anis flavors), everything else was absolutely delicious and we have since recommended the restaurant to another tourist we met throughout our travels in Lyon 🙂

Amazing dinner! Wonderful combinations of flavors perfectly prepared. Service was friendly, efficient, and attentive - but not intrusive. A classy, upscale neighborhood bistro that perfectly balances sophistication with an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. The wine list, while concise, is thoughtfully curated — each selection clearly chosen with care, making it easy to find the perfect pairing without feeling overwhelmed by options. The service was excellent throughout our lunch attentive, professional, and well-coordinated for our party of five without ever feeling intrusive. Every dish that came to the table was beautifully executed and incredibly flavorful, but two in particular have stayed with us long after the meal. The morel dish was an absolute standout — rich, earthy, and memorable in the best possible way. And then there was the black garlic dessert: a bold, unexpected creation that somehow worked brilliantly. Days later, we’re still talking about it. If you’re looking for a neighborhood gem that punches well above its weight, this is it.

Fantastic! We've eaten in many restaurants across the Michelin spectrum, and this one beats them all on quality/price. Inspired and delicious dishes, accompanied by great wines. Honorary mention (pictures) for the entrée with foie gras poché-brûlé, and the dessert with ail noir (black garlic), levure (yeast) and balsamic vinegar. Absolutely brilliant!
Charlie Liu★★★★★
This restaurant is a Bib Gourmand selection by Michelin — which means great quality at a great value, and I totally agree! The food was creative, well-executed, and worth every euro. The meal started with a pumpkin yuzu foam soup, which was refreshing and nicely balanced. The official appetizer was grilled and poached foie gras with a Japanese-style sour broth — elegant and tasty, though personally I still prefer classic high-end ingredients like wagyu or foie gras. The interlude course featured cheese with pickled cabbage, which I surprisingly loved! The cheese was fragrant and rich — I’ve heard that Lyon’s cheese is generally very good, and this one didn’t disappoint. For the main course, I had chicken breast with mushrooms in a creamy sauce. The sauce was rich and flavorful, though the portion felt a bit heavy toward the end. The sweet interlude was lovely, and the main dessert — a chocolate mousse with just the right bitterness — was delicious! The pear tart wasn’t too sweet (which I liked), but the sorbet was the only thing that didn’t quite hit the mark. Overall, the lunch menu offers excellent value — €28 for a high-quality meal, or €35 if you upgrade to include an extra small dish. You can also upgrade the appetizer or dessert for a few more euros. Definitely worth it!

Insider Tips for Dining in Lyon

Navigating Lyon’s dining scene is a pleasure, but a little local knowledge will ensure you secure the best tables and have the most authentic experience possible. The city operates on its own rhythm, which is distinctly slower and more deliberate than the capital. Understanding the etiquette of the Lyonnais table, from booking windows to tipping culture, will elevate your trip from a standard visit to a true gastronomic immersion.

1). Book ahead, especially for the heavy hitters

Lyon is a city of food lovers, and the best restaurants are small. For Michelin-starred venues like Takao Takano or La Mère Brazier, reservations often open months in advance. Do not expect to walk in on a Saturday night; plan your itinerary around your reservations.

2). Understand the “Menu Lyonnais”

Most traditional restaurants offer a fixed-price menu at lunch that is significantly cheaper than dinner. Look for the “Menu du Midi” or “Menu Lyonnais.” This is the best way to experience high-end cooking on a budget, often featuring two or three courses for a fraction of the à la carte price.

3). Embrace the “Bouchon” culture, but choose wisely

A true bouchon is not just any restaurant serving sausage. Look for the “Les Bouchons Lyonnais” certification sticker in the window, which guarantees authenticity. Be prepared for rich, heavy food—pork products, cream sauces, and offal are the stars. If you have dietary restrictions, call ahead, as these menus are not flexible.

4). Don’t skip the “Corkage” and Wine Bars

While Lyon has incredible restaurants, some of the best food is served in its caves à manger (wine bars). Places like La Cave des Voyageurs serve exquisite charcuterie, cheese, and small plates that rival any formal kitchen. This is also the best way to taste the local Beaujolais Crus and Northern Rhône Syrahs by the glass.

5). Mind the “Service Continu”

Many traditional French restaurants close between 2:30 PM and 7:00 PM. If you are jet-lagged or simply hungry at 4:00 PM, your options will be limited to brasseries, bakeries, or fast food. Plan to eat lunch by 1:00 PM and dinner after 8:00 PM to align with the local service hours.

Lyon is a city that rewards the curious and the hungry. It is a place where you can spend a fortune on a once-in-a-lifetime meal, or sit elbow-to-elbow with locals at a zinc counter for under twenty euros and eat just as well. The common thread is a profound respect for the product, the producer, and the diner.

As you wander the traboules of Vieux Lyon or climb the hill to Croix-Rousse, let your senses guide you. The smell of roasting chicken, the sight of a perfectly pink praline tart, and the sound of a cork popping from a bottle of Morgon are all invitations. Accept them. In Lyon, the table is always set, and there is always room for one more.
