I like shopping here during the three months a year that we're in Fontvieille. The store is very open and bright, especially the produce and deli area. This Leclerc has expanded recently, and many things have moved, so it's a little confusing, but I'm getting used to it. As in the rest of France, mustard is missing from the shelves, as you can see in the photo I have posted.

Shopping center new and well stocked. Good value prices. Unfortunately the toilets are not very clean
Martina O'Connor★★★★★
Great parking for motorhomes, to do a shop, no barriers. Super selection of fish meat pastries, vegetables and fruit what a great selection. Very good wine selection also. Lovely helpful staff and was nice to see the aisles having signs so your not wandering up and down looking for goods, a great store. Will be recommending to friends travelling in the area.
Gordon Bain★★★★★
This is a great supermarket. It's huge but very spacious. There are other smaller shops & amenities within the same building. Parking is plentiful & because it's on the edge of town it's easy to access by bus or car. Recommended.
Jacqueline Van der Westen★★★★☆
Big supermarket with a lot of options. Fresh meat, fish and a lot of vegetables. 1 minus point was that you have to get in line to get your vegetables weighed. This can been optimized, for example let it been done at the cash register. (I don't know if that is a thing in France, but in the Netherlands we already do it). When I would go back, I would use this supermarket because of the fresh options.

I visited this supermarket while getting oriented in the area as a tourist. I picked up a single kiwifruit but decided not to buy it because the checkout lines were extremely long, so I returned it and asked staff how to exit without making a purchase. A security guard then stopped me for a bag check because I was wearing a backpack. I cooperated immediately and opened my bag fully for inspection. My bag was my travel daypack and was completely full of personal belongings in a fairly chaotic jumble, as you would expect from someone travelling. I repeatedly tried to open it wider and move items around so he could see inside more clearly, but despite my attempts to cooperate, the guard became increasingly aggressive and continued demanding access to deeper parts of the bag. There was also a language barrier, though I tried my best with the little French I'd been able to learn on short notice before going on this trip...and at a certain point I was no longer comfortable effectively unpacking my entire bag in the middle of the supermarket after already complying multiple times. When I eventually decided to leave, the guard followed me out into the parking area, repeatedly harassed me, and physically grabbed at me while I was wearing the backpack after I told him I had already cooperated. He threatened to call the police which I told him he was more than welcome to do as I hadn't taken anything from their store and hadn't even taken off or touched my backpack the whole time I was in the store, which their own cameras would be able to show them. I was simply trying to get my bearings and work out where I could buy groceries locally, and I found the entire interaction humiliating, intimidating, and completely inappropriate. I understand stores have security procedures, but this went far beyond a normal or professional bag check and left me feeling unsafe, harassed and violated.

Fantastic supermarket to fill all your needs. I am visiting from U.S. and went to but a few food items. Great prices and selection. The apples were delicious, and 1 liter of soda was less expensive than an individual size from the in and out stores.

Standard city Carrefour. Enough to find the basics, but definitely less options than the bigger shops. They don't have much bread options compared to Casino across the street. Fruit looked decent

Horrible staff. Early in the evening I bought a few bottles of water and a paper bag in the other Utile store in town. After visiting Grand Cafe in the Lices avenue I decided to get some snack and looked for a shop and discovered this branch just down the street. I went straight in and straight to the snack section which is the first row after the entrance, took a bag of snacks and went straight to the till. I put the snack bag on the till and also showed the woman behind the till my paper bag with a few bottles of water from the other Utile store, and said I had bought it in the other store. Suddenly she said I had to pay for the bottles and paper bag I just brought in, « the bag is from my store» she said very very unpolitely. It was absurd, she asked me to show the receipt. I did not receive any receipe from the other Utile store, I explained, but she kept on nagging about the bag and the bottles as if I just picked up it all in this store. In fact she behaved like this bag with water bottles was something I just picked up in this store and was going to pay. Why would I have a paper bag with the Utile logo if I had not already bought it? The paper bags were stored behind the counter- so why did she say this bag was from «her» store? And that I must pay for the bag and the bottles I just brought in? WHY- I may ask now, why don’t they give customers receipes if they have this crazy policy? The woman ( latino look, long dark hair, 30’s maybe ) was extremely rude and the whole situation was absurd. Luckily at the right moment I got out of the store with my bottles and bag without that mean till worder being able to force me to pay twice for the same goods. She was actually trying to scam me to pay twice. This was an awful experience, which I immediately told to my family (« get away from that town asap»), and to the hotel reception staff at the hotel I was staying ( who said this till worker was crazy and it was not normal behaviour in shops in Arles. Besides it is not custom to give receipes when you pay cash, the reception staff told me. I woun’t set my foot in this store again, and neither any othe Utile I come across on my journey. This experience also gave me as a visitor a bad impression of Arles. Shame on you Utile staff. With that kind of staff I would not be surprised if this store looses most customers and goes bankrupt in the near future.

I bought yogurt but they didn't provide a spoon, so I had to go back. When I asked for a spoon, the person said, 'I said hello, why didn't you say hello? Don't you know English?' and said something inappropriate, which made me angry. And when I asked for a disposable spoon, they said I had to pay for it. She was a woman with long hair and glasses. Very unfriendly and made me feel bad. She should work at a mart for the rest of her life.

Went to the photo exhibition upstairs...but had to walk through the entire shop to get there. Then, on leaving the shop we were stopped and searched like shoplifters purely because we had not bought anything in the shop! The dedicated exit for visitors to the Rencontres d'Arles exposition was barricaded by order of the Monoprix management. Shame on them!
Bucks Tutoring★☆☆☆☆
Incredibly RUDE Cashier Staff. We go to the only open checkout line. The other line was staffed but "not available". We are second in line, behind a woman who was putting her items on the belt and chatting away with the cashier. The cashier IGNORED us entirely. No "Bonjour"! As is very customary in France. We are buying One Sandwich. So then the customer in front of us stopped putting items on the belt. The belt is covered in items and the Cashier does nothing about it! She just keeps chatting with the customer - it is clearly social - and no issues with any items. 3 Full Minutes Pass. No items are being rung up. The cashier keeps having a conversation with the lady in front of us - and ignoring us entirely. Remember - there is no self-checkout and no other line to use. So, we finally just give up. We leave our one item on the belt and start to walk out. Suddenly, the Cashier starts barking at us in a nasty tone "where do we think we are going"?! And that we can't leave until she checks my wife's purse and my backpack. LOL That's not happening. You don't get to treat us this way then think you can impose your will on us - which is against French law. This was our first visit to Monoprix - and our LAST! MONOPRIX - We are DONE WITH YOU - FOREVER.
Katherine Kim★☆☆☆☆
Horrible location. They follow you around, accuse you of stealing, scream at you, refuse to help an exchange, etc etc. I lived here for a long time. This particular Monoprix is really bad and particularly prejudiced against people of Asiatique descent. Which is funny since they constantly have tourists coming in especially during the summer months. No other Monoprix I've ever gone to has ever given me issues but this one is always a horrible experience.
Amy Beckford★☆☆☆☆
I wish we had read the reviews before visiting this store because everything you can read about the rudeness of its cashiers is absolutely true. In all of my trips to France, exploring all regions of the country, I have never experienced anything like it. When we visited our French friends a few days later, they were also appalled by what we had experienced. After being ignored for several minutes, we decided to abandon our purchase and to look for a snack elsewhere. Only then did the cashier "notice" us and begin yelling something about checking our bags. We simply ignored her and left, especially since we know this is not a standard French policy. While some people suspect there is a racist element to this policy, I think it may be even more broadly about "people who aren't from around here." Not only will we avoid this particular store in the future, but we will equally avoid Monoprix in favor of its competitors, too.
Chris L★☆☆☆☆
This store is a good simulation of what the permanent underclasses will feel like. I paid 150 € for some basic foodstuffs and still got treated like a thief - and so was the person before me and the person after me.

An ideal mini-market with courteous staff, especially the top-notch butcher's shop. I often come back for my grilling purchases; this is where you'll find the best Mergez in the region. My wife, who hadn't eaten them for years because of the poor quality, has now reconciled with them; the Mergez are really good.

Practical Tips for Grocery Shopping in Arles

Shopping efficiently in Arles requires a slight adjustment to local rhythms and customs. Whether you are trying to avoid the tourist rush or hunting for the freshest regional ingredients, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The following advice will help you navigate the aisles like a local and maximize the quality of your purchases.

  1. Time Your Visit Wisely: Avoid shopping between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM or after 5:30 PM on weekdays, as stores fill with locals on lunch breaks or commuting home. For a calm experience, visit mid-morning or during the "dead" hours of early afternoon.
  2. Bring Your Own Bags: While plastic bags are being phased out across France, not all stores offer free alternatives. Keep a few sturdy reusable bags or a rolling caddy in your car, especially if you plan to buy heavy items like bottled water or wine.
  3. Look for "Produit Régional" Labels: To ensure you are buying authentic local goods, look for the "Produit en Provence" or "Sud de France" labels. This is particularly important when buying olive oil, honey, and Camargue red rice, which vary greatly in quality.
  4. Weigh Your Produce: In the fresh produce section of most French supermarkets, you must weigh your fruits and vegetables using the provided scales and print a price sticker before heading to the checkout. Skipping this step often results in a walk of shame back to the aisle.
  5. Check the "Date Courte" Section: Most major supermarkets in Arles have a clearance section for items nearing their sell-by date (DLC). This is an excellent way to find premium cheeses, meats, and prepared dishes at discounts of 30% to 50%, perfect if you are cooking that evening.
  6. Understand Sunday Hours: Retail laws are strict. Most large hypermarkets on the outskirts are closed on Sunday afternoons or entirely. If you need supplies on a Sunday, rely on smaller city-center convenience stores or plan ahead on Saturday morning.

The joy of shopping in Arles lies in the blend of convenience and tradition. While supermarkets offer the staples, remember that the city’s outdoor markets—particularly the Saturday market on Boulevard des Lices—remain the soul of local commerce. Use these stores for your pantry basics and household needs, but leave room in your basket for the heirloom tomatoes and fresh herbs found only at the market stalls.

By choosing the right supermarket for the right occasion, you can significantly enhance your stay or daily life in this historic city. Whether you prioritize organic produce, budget brands, or the convenience of a late-night run, Arles has a retail solution ready to meet your needs.
