Menton’s commercial landscape is a refreshing contrast to the glitzy, brand-obsessed promenades of nearby Monaco and Cannes. Here, shopping is a slower, more intimate affair, defined by family-run boutiques, fragrant open-air markets, and artisans who have perfected their crafts over generations. Rather than racing through sterile malls, you are invited to wander through pastel-colored streets where the scent of fresh citrus and lavender drifts out of open doorways.
The town’s unique microclimate, which allows lemons to grow year-round, heavily influences its retail scene. You will find a distinct emphasis on local produce, citrus-infused delicacies, and natural cosmetics that harness the power of the region’s botanicals. This means you can take a piece of the French Riviera home with you, whether it is a jar of artisanal confiture or a bottle of olive oil pressed from local groves.
Geographically, Menton is incredibly walkable, making it a dream for leisurely shoppers. The majority of the best retail spots are concentrated in the medieval Old Town and the pedestrianized Rue Saint-Michel. Because the town is compact, you can seamlessly transition from browsing high-end French fashion to haggling for fresh cheese at a market stall within a matter of minutes.
For the discerning shopper, Menton offers value beyond the transaction. The experience is rooted in authenticity; many shopkeepers are the very people who make the goods they sell. Engaging with them provides a deeper understanding of the Franco-Italian culture that defines this border town, where Ligurian influences merge beautifully with French elegance.
While the city is famous for its gardens and beaches, dedicating an afternoon to retail therapy reveals a different side of its character. From delicate lacework to robust local wines, the variety is surprisingly vast for a town of its size. Knowing where to look is the key to uncovering the true treasures hidden within its winding alleys.
Whether you are hunting for a unique souvenir, a gourmet gift, or a new addition to your wardrobe, Menton delivers with quiet confidence. This guide highlights the essential retail destinations that should be on your itinerary, ensuring you experience the very best the city has to offer.

I have always visited this place every time I have been in Menton
I like it ,especially because they sell Sisley eau de soir and creams
the shop assistants aren't very friendly ,but they're still better than the English ones!!!

I haven't been in one of those stores in a very long time, so it was really nice for me to go back. It is pretty spacious, well organized, and clean. The staff is very professional, courteous and knowledgeable. I found the prices to be really good and bought myself a few items.

Very small Lafayette compare to others… good thing is in the middle of the city for any fast emergency shopping 👍🏽
Raluca Olaru★★★★☆
Really nice place for shopping if you have some spare time while you're in Menton.

This one also provides some outlet items alongside the usual items. It's a pretty big store with 4 floors, yet no toilet facilities. That's one of the reasons I gave it 3 stars and the 2nd reason is that it was advertised as an outlet, yet the outlet selection was very limited. The staff in general was very helpful and polite.

A great market open from as early as 5:00am but most stalls are closed by around 1:00pm, so get there early. Many of the stalls are artisan by nature. The produce in most stalls is exceptional. We go most days for fresh bread and morning pastries.
Wendy Leung★★★★★
A great market on Saturday morning. Do try to go there early. You'll find fresh vegetables, cheeses and meats. Outside the market sells household goods, clothing and plants.
Rebecca Freemantle★★★★★
Great market, lots of options and vendors. So much to tempt you! All the food is local and it’s great to be able to buy exactly what you need instead of the pre packaged stuff we are stuck with the UK. Go early and spend some time browsing!

Gorgeous Market hall with absolutely lovely looking produce. Think it's a bit pricier than average but you can tell that the quality is extremely high. Everything we bought (from a variety of sellers) was amazing, especially the fishmongers by one of the main entrances.
Nicola Wilson★★★★★
A cornerstone of our stay in Menton; this market open each morning from 8am - 1pm is a treasure trove of the best of local produce. A few stand out stalls for us were the bakery and butcher counter located respectively opposite each other at the far left corner of the market hall ( n.b. the Tarte aux Pommes Fine was exceptional) and the organic fruit stall located at the centre on same row as aforementioned stalls. A must visit for anyone keen to support local producers.

Fantastic shop with a great team! The brands they carry are high-quality and offer excellent value for money... the sales assistants give great advice and don't pressure you to buy. This will now be my favorite shop when I return to Menton.
Thank you Kaktus, I highly recommend it!!!
Caroline D.B.★☆☆☆☆
Given the shopping experience, it's not worth going in. I made a purchase last year, and the sales assistant was very welcoming. However, this time, it was the manager, a woman with short hair, who was there, and the welcome was icy, whereas she was warm, even friendly, to the two other customers in the shop. When I entered, I said hello, looking her in the eye, and after several long seconds, she forced herself to respond. It seems to me that she's not used to seeing people of color in her store and that she's doing her best to discourage me from coming back. I wanted to buy an item I'd seen in their window display that wasn't on the shelves. I was served with a very unfriendly attitude. Feeling unwelcome, I won't be going back. The items are excessively expensive for their mediocre quality anyway. You might experience a dip in energy depending on customer traffic. But if you can't even manage two or three customers with a small smile... you'd be better off changing careers.

Going to Kaktus is like adding spice and excitement to your life, bursting with flavors and colors, not to mention a touch of whimsy! The welcome is as warm as the place itself, so friendly and fun too. Plus, they offer plenty of advice for those still undecided... pure joy and good vibes in this shop!

A very well-stocked store with an extremely varied selection of dresses, trousers, and outfits, all in very good taste and at reasonable prices.

Lovely little shop. Everything made on site.
Interesting and varied range. Not cheap but it's the proper stuff , so it's width it.
Limoncellos of various fruit, tapanade, and soaps.

We stopped here to get the famous limoncello, something I was waiting for, since my last trip to Italy back in 2018. There were 3 varieties available and samples were free to taste. A staff member did attend to us but we felt he was more attentive to the white customers who didn't even buy anything after tasting a lot. We had some confusion regarding the bottles (their shapes and labels were different), but the staff did not providing a suitable answer. So as usual, google came to the rescue and we finally bought the bottle we wanted. There was plethora of products to look for and purchase. We would have gotten more had the staff been a bit more attentive towards us.
JZ★★★★★
Wonderful experience trying out the marmalades and pestos here. They are very friendly and offer samples to try. We were lucky to get one of the last lemon marmalades. A lot of the products have lemon flavors as Menton is known for their lemons.
They do offer some deals if you buy enough things so it's worth it. If there's any room for improvement, I would say getting nicer gift bags to bring back home instead of the plastic bags they had.
Overall a great experience and worth visiting if in Menton.

The perfect place to find durabel and fair trade pieces! My friend (who is a local) showed me this place where, for many years now, their family buys hand made bags for a rediculously affordable price. They have something beautiful for every price range, from fashionable design pieces to cute gifts and souvenirs. And if that all wasn’t enough, the shop owner is increadibly friendly!
(Please be polite and say hi and bye though, as we saw many tourists forgetting to do so…)

Mind you, this shop pretends to have great deals with up to 60% off on (e.g.) Scotch & Soda clothes. When entering the staff will tell you that if need be, you can ask them for additional sizes on the discounted racks. However, on the discounted racks there are only impossible sizes and when you inquire after a different size, all of a sudden there is no further stock but they offer you a 10% discount on the "new" collection (which is in fact, not from this year).

A cold, prison-like welcome. Judged from head to toe, are we bothering them?
Such friendliness since 1972? It's surprising. I managed to get a greeting, but forget about a smile, and you feel constantly watched, as if you were planning to steal.
You really get the impression of being judged from head to toe…
Judging by the other reviews, I'm clearly not the only one who felt this way.
Olivier Caveriviere★★★★★

A petite brunette with a disdainful air greets you—no, sorry, sizes you up. Frankly, I felt bad giving them money. Oh well, no big deal...we'll go somewhere else next time.

The sales assistants are disappointing every time I come in. They barely say hello, they're not friendly at all. You can clearly tell you're bothering them as soon as you walk into the shop. Despite everything, I've shopped there for several years. Today they finally put me off; I won't be going back.

Practical Tips for Shopping in Menton
To ensure your retail experience is as smooth and enjoyable as possible, it helps to understand the local rhythms and customs of the town. Menton operates on a relaxed Mediterranean schedule, which differs significantly from the 24/7 culture found in larger metropolitan areas. A little preparation regarding payment methods, timing, and local etiquette will allow you to navigate the boutiques and markets like a seasoned local rather than a rushed tourist.
Embrace the Siesta Hours: Many smaller, independent boutiques in Menton close for a long lunch break, typically between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM or even 3:00 PM. Plan your shopping around these hours. Use the downtime to enjoy a leisurely lunch at a café; attempting to shop during the siesta will often lead to locked doors and disappointment.
Carry Cash and a Chip Card: While most established stores accept major credit cards, the vibrant open-air markets and some smaller artisan stalls operate on a cash-only basis. Ensure you have a mix of small denomination Euro notes and coins for purchasing fresh produce, flowers, or small trinkets. Additionally, ensure your credit card has a chip and PIN capability, as this is the standard in France.
Bring Your Own Bag: In alignment with French environmental laws, single-use plastic bags are largely a thing of the past. Shopkeepers will often provide paper bags, but if you plan on buying heavy items like books, wine, or ceramics, a sturdy canvas tote bag is essential. This is particularly useful when navigating the steep, cobbled streets of the Old Town.
Know the Market Days: If your primary goal is to visit the food and flea markets, timing is everything. The main covered market (Les Halles) is generally open daily, but the sprawling outdoor textile and brocante (flea) markets often operate on specific days of the week or month. Check the local tourism office schedule to avoid missing out on these pop-up events.
Ask Before Photographing: While the colorful displays of lemons and spices are incredibly photogenic, it is considered polite to ask the vendor for permission before taking a photo of their stall or storefront. Some artisans are protective of their designs, and a quick smile and a polite request will usually result in a warm welcome and perhaps even a story behind the goods.
Take Advantage of Tax-Free Shopping: If you are a non-EU resident, many larger stores in Menton offer "détaxe" (VAT refunds) on purchases over a certain threshold (usually around 100 euros). You will need to present your passport at the time of purchase to fill out the paperwork. This can result in significant savings on higher-priced items like leather goods or jewelry.
As the sun begins to dip behind the mountains and the lanterns flicker on in the Old Town, the shopping streets of Menton take on a magical, golden glow. It is the perfect time to stop for a gelato and admire the wares you have gathered throughout the day. The true joy of shopping here lies not just in the items you bring home, but in the conversations had, the flavors sampled, and the slower pace of life you absorbed along the way.
Ultimately, a shopping trip in Menton is an exploration of the senses. Every purchase carries the essence of the Mediterranean—whether it is the scent of a handmade soap, the taste of a local olive oil, or the texture of a Provençal linen. By stepping away from the mainstream chains and supporting these local artisans, you are taking home a piece of the city’s soul, ensuring your memories of the French Riviera last long after your tan has faded.
