12 Best Shopping Spots in Annecy

Nestled between the crystal-clear lake and the dramatic peaks of the French Alps, Annecy offers a shopping experience that feels far removed from the sterile uniformity of modern malls. The “Venice of the Alps” invites you to wander through a labyrinth of pastel-colored arcades, where the gentle sound of canal water accompanies your search for the perfect find. It is a city where history and commerce intertwine seamlessly.

For the discerning shopper, Annecy is a treasure trove of alpine authenticity and French elegance. While the city is famous for its breathtaking scenery, its retail landscape is equally compelling, offering everything from high-end fashion to rustic Savoyard delicacies. Knowing where to go, however, is the key to unlocking the true magic of local commerce here.

The historic Old Town, with its car-free medieval lanes, serves as the beating heart of the shopping scene. Here, you will find independent boutiques that have been family-run for generations, tucked beneath stone archways and alongside flowing canals. It is a stark contrast to the modern commercial zones located on the outskirts of the city.

Whether you are hunting for a unique souvenir, a cutting-edge outfit, or the finest regional cheese to take home, the city caters to a wide spectrum of tastes and budgets. The best shopping spots are not just about the transaction; they are about the atmosphere, the history, and the connection to the Savoie region.

To help you navigate this retail paradise, we have curated a guide to the most distinctive and rewarding retail areas and markets. From bustling open-air markets to chic shopping streets, this list ensures you spend less time searching and more time discovering the genuine soul of Annecy.

Below is a curated selection of the best places to explore, whether you are looking for fashion, food, or artisanal crafts.

Beautiful "smaller" Galeries Lafayette! It has a little of everything, yet in a smaller setting, also the shopping center is nice it has Uniqlo , Yaya, and other nice stores a few restaurants and a bio supermarket (not cheap!) Also , plenty of parking space which is very convenient Absolutely recommended! ⭐

It’s a great shopping mall. I like it specially in winter and in rainy days. U get to have access to all the high brands without the hassle of cold weather. This is technically the reason why I visited here and ended up buying a lot of clothes and goods for the whole family.

I have been coming to Nouvelles Galleries/Galeries Lafayette in Annecy for over 30 years so I have met many of the lovely people working there over this time - but I would like to make a special mention and sincere thank you for Marlene in the Home Linens and Adeline from the Sisley counter in Beauté who, for many years now, have been so positive, professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Congratulations to you, Galeries Lafayette, for these two splendid ambassadors in Annecy🌷

Beautiful building we grabbed there a nice coffee and went for a walk just straight to the board of the lac

Although they are in the midst of building work the store is open. There is some free parking in the car park at ground level. Inside the store is open as usual. Lots of luxury brand concessions in homewares and fashion for men and women. Looking forward to the completion of the renovation next year!

The markets in Annecy were really cool. There was such a variety of things to buy, from clothing and trinkets to olives, tapenade, cheeses, fruit, jams, souvenirs, wood carvings, and more. The market stretches through several streets and winds around multiple blocks. It does feel quite touristy, so you're likely to pay a bit more for some items. That said, the charm, energy, and atmosphere make it well worth a visit, whether you're looking to buy a few souvenirs or simply browse. It was also entertaining to watch people shopping, from those picking up a few small items to others leaving with several enormous wheels of cheese (leaving me guessing... why?). We ended up getting a table at a nearby restaurant overlooking part of the market, and it was a great place to people-watch. We visited on a Friday because we'd heard more vendors were open that day, and that was certainly true, but it also made for a very busy experience. If you're visiting in the summer and prefer a quieter pace, I'd probably recommend going on another weekday. Most of the main vendors should still be there, but with noticeably smaller crowds.

We arrived in Annecy on a Sunday at noon and walked through the market. On Sunday it was huge and very busy. We stayed 3 nights and were able to go again on Tuesday morning. The market was smaller and less busy than on Sunday. We bought some delicious food and pastries.

It’s Tuesday — market day! 🎉 I love markets so much that I even plan my travels around them whenever I can. Today I wandered through from 8:00 to 11:30 in the morning, and every moment was pure joy!

Love the Annecy farmers market. The event was held for several hours in the morning and closed around 2pm in the afternoon right in the heart of the beautiful town. There were a lot of local fresh products to pick up. We got some cheese, prosciutto, fresh veggies, and some souvenir items. Highly recommended.

Plenty of Tesla bays available on the 2 occasions we have visited
Freight Legend★☆☆☆☆
The place is clean. The seating is minimal. No power outlets, or USB in sight. The Wifi collects way too much data. No 3g, no 4g, no 5g inside. And although it is so far from the town center, the prices in the shops are about the same as anywhere else in Annecy. So why bother to come to a parking flooded with sun light, or rain, or whatever? It's the cheapest they could legally get away in order to have a shopping center. Oh, and closed down shops. Not a winning place.
Hossam Fahmy★★★★★
During my stay in Annecy I visited La Galerie Val Semnoz, my daughter had her hair made at a hair dresser and I waited for her in Cafe where I had a nice snack and coffee... place is very cozy and with cheerful colors , parking is very easy and toilets are clean.
Angela Ferrassi★☆☆☆☆
They check your bag basically suggesting you are a shop lifter. No way to treat a customer. They should try using CCTV instead like in UK and treat their customers with the respect they deserve. I have no idea why French people accept this.

This is a great place for shopping at affordable prices. We stopped by on an extremely hot day in August to enjoy the cool air-conditioning and ended up finding some great deals. The huge supermarket inside is especially recommended. It offers a wide selection of casual clothes and housewares, in addition to a large variety of food, drinks, and cosmetics — all at very reasonable prices.
Phil Fuhrmann★★☆☆☆
There is a very broad selection of shops. You can find almost anything there. However, traffic is a big nightmare: Both to get there and to get around inside the shopping area. On top of it, the road and shop layout are very confusing. You can easily get lost. Often the shortest way to get somewhere is long and complicated. Getting around by foot or bicycle is also tricky and dangerous. We avoid this shopping centre when we can, which is a shame because the shops themselves and their variety are very good.
Mark Ashby★★★☆☆
Just be careful on Saturdays it gets incredibly crowded with cars. You can be stuck for over an hour in the 1-way system trying to move from one store to another or just exit the retail park.
Freight Legend★★★☆☆
The place is okay. But it's usually crowded, and there are way too many cars for the capacity of the streets around, so it's not very accessible. Bonus: it's way too far from Annecy town center.
Guen B.★★★★☆
This establishment is great for shopping. They have an array of products and brands to choose from. Staff are nice and friendly. it. Their parking space is huge.

What an amazing place for shopping and daily grocery. Christmas time is the best as you get post Xmas deals and heavily discounted items especially chocolates, which make the duty free shopping at the airport seem like a scam.

Very disappointing shopping experience, not what I expect from Auchan. Large hypermarket with plenty of parking but poor range of products especially charcuterie, wine and fish. Bored, disinterested staff who would rather talk to each other than help customers. Dreadful checkouts, not enough open, long queues, all had difficulty processing card payments!
Alan C (AlanC-LAUK)★☆☆☆☆
Ample parking, little shade and high kerbs means a longer walk with shopping carts. No carts inside, collect one before entering. Staff offhand to the point of rudeness. Totally different experience in products and staff from Auchan at Dunkirk, hard to believe they are part of the same company. Checkouts so slow and many problems with payments, even cash seemed to be a problem.
Matthias van der Hallen★★★☆☆
Reasonably priced, well stocked but the fruits and vegetables are not in good condition. You really have to select the best paprikas from the bunch to have remotely fresh ones, and we had to throw away half of our prepacked mushrooms as they had turned bad.

On a whole I do like Zara clothing it's my go to shop. But this particular branch was extremely busy due to the start of the sale. Ok, but it was seriously under staffed, not enough tills open and excessively long cues, same for female changing rooms. I picked up some lovely things but waiting so long to pay for something or try something on is not my bag. Staff that were available were stood by the steps chatting... maybe it was an emergency 🤪
Larina Elita★★☆☆☆
I don't come in here if I can help it. Everything is everywhere, badly stocked and mismatched. Sales girls are not a help and give you these looks that totally say to "piss off". I only go in if there is a sale. And that I do at my own risk- meaning that I won't ask for help, know that my wait at the register is about 30-45 minutes long, and will have to skirt around clothes/ shoes on the floor.

I've managed to buy super jeans with a good price during the season of sales) Good shop and very polite shop assistants.

A few days ago, I purchased a magnet from your store for €5. However, I noticed that I was charged €50 instead, which I assume was a mistake. I would appreciate it if the incorrect charge could be refunded to my account. My bank is currently handling the matter as well. This was a disappointing experience, and I hope it can be resolved promptly. It took place in your shop in the center of Annecy. No site at all.

I came to this shop after eating at a great restaurant next door also found through Google reviews. My daughters and I walked in to buy some souvenirs. As we were paying the man at the register, the woman who was not friendly from the beginning accused my daughter of stealing a €2 euro key chain, AFTER I paid €29 euros worth of souvenirs- think of their illogical behavior. Let’s keep this short. Maybe if they were better shop keepers they would have noticed that we had ski wear on worth more than everything in their little sad store. My accused, top student in her school, daughter was in a Rossignol ski jacket worth €450. We were wearing Northface snow boots. My Longchamp hand bag was obvious and on and on. Clearly they don’t know how to judge their customers and are trying to solve France’s immigration problem with each one of us. Sad that we just came from skiing at a very exclusive ski slope in the Alps to finish our visit in this pretty city and had this awful experience. Even if you don’t have our means, no one should be treated as we were. I’m a CEO of a company, with an Italian husband, whose tourism business in France is worth 10 times this little ‘tabac’ store and am treated as a petty thief. Hope their karma comes to bear as I’m sure my review won’t change them, but maybe those reading these reviews might be sympathetic to people being treated unfairly. As a world traveling French person, I could leave this review in the 5 languages I speak, but I won’t since they likely don’t speak but French and thus will take them a bit to understand and I’m sure they’ll have a sorry excuse for a response. Go to Altitude 44 down the street instead for friendly service and better souvenirs! Looking to spread the word through other places to review as this city should be ashamed of these shop owners.

Smart Tips for Shopping in Annecy

Shopping in Annecy is a delight, but a little local knowledge can greatly enhance your experience and help you avoid common tourist pitfalls. Whether you are navigating the medieval streets or planning a trip to a retail park, understanding the rhythm of the city will ensure you get the best value and the most authentic products. Here are some essential strategies to keep in mind during your visit.

1. Respect the Sacred Closing Times
Unlike major metropolises that never sleep, Annecy observes traditional trading hours strictly. Most independent boutiques in the Old Town close for a long lunch between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, and almost everything is closed on Sundays. Plan your day around these hours to avoid staring at locked doors.

2. Bring Your Own Shopping Bag
In line with French environmental laws, plastic bags are largely a thing of the past. While boutiques offer paper bags, if you plan to visit the markets or buy multiple items, carrying a sturdy canvas tote or a foldable bag is highly practical and aligns with local sustainable habits.

3. Look for the "Fabriqué en France" or "Artisan" Labels
If you are looking for a genuine souvenir rather than a mass-produced trinket, check the labels. Many shops specialize in genuine Savoyard crafts, such as Opinel knives, handmade ceramics, or local textiles. Look for markers indicating local production to ensure your money supports the regional economy.

4. Timing is Everything at the Markets
If your visit coincides with the famous street markets, arrive early. The best produce, vintage finds, and artisanal goods are often snapped up by locals before 10:00 AM. Going early also allows you to browse comfortably before the narrow streets become crowded with the midday tourist rush.

5. Take Advantage of Tax-Free Shopping
For visitors residing outside the European Union, many larger retailers offer "détaxe" (VAT refunds). You will typically need to spend a minimum amount in a single store on the same day. Ask the cashier for the paperwork before you pay, as it cannot be issued retroactively.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Explore the Side Streets
While the main thoroughfares like Rue Royale are beautiful, the true gems often hide in the tiny perpendicular lanes. Duck into the covered passages (arcades) and climb the small staircases; you will often find the most unique ateliers and quietest shops where artisans are happy to chat about their work.

Shopping in Annecy is as much about the sensory experience as it is about the goods you bring home. The rustle of paper in a heritage bookshop, the aroma of melting cheese at a fromagerie, and the sight of vibrant fabrics in a canal-side window all contribute to the city’s charm. By stepping away from the standard retail chains and engaging with the local shopkeepers, you participate in a tradition of commerce that has thrived here for centuries.

As you leave with your bags full of Savoyard wine, handmade leather goods, or perhaps a box of violet-flavored chocolates, you carry a piece of the Alps with you. These purchases are not just objects; they are tangible memories of the time you spent wandering through one of France’s most beautiful cities.
