15 Things to Do in Annecy

Nestled between the pristine waters of one of Europe’s cleanest lakes and the jagged peaks of the French Alps, Annecy feels like a living postcard. Often called the “Venice of the Alps” due to its winding canals and pastel-painted houses, this Savoyard town offers a rare blend of medieval history and outdoor adventure.

Unlike bustling metropolitan hubs, Annecy’s charm lies in its walkability and the distinct shift in atmosphere between the seasons. Whether you are visiting for a weekend romantic getaway or a family summer holiday, the city provides a sensory overload of alpine air, cobblestone textures, and the gentle sound of flowing water.

The culinary identity here is distinct from the rest of France, heavily influenced by mountain traditions and the proximity to Switzerland. Dishes like tartiflette and perch fillets from the lake are not just food; they are a cultural requirement for a complete visit.

However, the magic of Annecy is not just in the famous landmarks; it is found in the hidden courtyards, the quiet morning markets, and the panoramic views that require a bit of climbing. To truly experience the "Pearl of the French Alps," you need to know where to go beyond the obvious.

Planning your itinerary requires a balance between the old town’s architectural wonders and the adrenaline-pumping activities on the water or in the mountains. The city is compact, but the surrounding natural parks expand the possibilities exponentially.

Below is a curated selection of experiences that capture the essence of Annecy, ensuring you don’t miss the hidden gems that locals cherish. From historical prisons to alpine meadows, these activities define the heart of this unique region.

Lake Annecy and the surrounding bridge area are a beautiful, clean, and family-friendly destination. Renting a pedal or speed boat is a must for enjoying the stunning views. The water near the shore makes it a great place for children to play under adult supervision.

It's absolutely beautiful in every season. This time we finally visited in the summer, and the bright sunshine, the reflections on the water, and the vibrant color of the lake were stunning.

A truly magical place. The views from the bridge are absolutely stunning, and our adventure in Annecy became even more special on a beautiful sunny day. While standing on the bridge and taking countless photos with your family, friends, partner, or whoever you are travelling with, do yourself a favour and take a one-hour boat tour. On one side of the bridge you have breathtaking views of the lake and mountains, while on the other side you will find the traditional wooden boats waiting to depart. At €30 per person, the boat tour was worth every euro. We enjoyed an unforgettable trip with a wonderful guide who provided explanations in both French and English. If you visit Annecy, this is an experience not to miss. 🙏🏽⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pont des Amours is a truly magical place and one of the highlights of Annecy. The bridge offers breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains. The scenery is picture-perfect from every angle, making it an ideal spot for photos, a peaceful walk, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature. The atmosphere is romantic, calm, and unforgettable, especially during sunrise or sunset. A must-visit landmark that perfectly captures the charm and beauty of Annecy

This is a place from which two wonderful, different landscapes open up. Accordingly, the impressions they give are different. From one side of the bridge you can look at the majestic lake, let your thoughts go far, far away, and on the opposite side of the bridge - a canal in the middle of the city, it's peace, it's romance... and beautiful photos:)

After wandering through the bustling streets of the Old Town, the gardens provide a refreshing, tranquil contrast, perfectly situated between the charm of the Old Town and the sparkling shores of the lake. The lush greenery and expansive lawns make it a fantastic spot for a leisurely stroll. We found it to be the perfect place for a relaxed lunch. We spent a wonderful afternoon enjoying a meal beneath the canopy of a huge, ancient tree, which provided lovely shade and a peaceful atmosphere. What makes the park even more enjoyable is how well-maintained it is: Cleanliness: You will find bins located throughout the park, making it easy to keep the area pristine. Convenience: There is plenty of access to public restrooms, which is a huge plus when you are out exploring for the day.

The park itself has nothing special, but the view of the lake surrounded by mountains is truly beautiful. One point worth mentioning is that there is a pier here from which boats depart for short cruises on the lake. Unfortunately, during the tourist season, it becomes incredibly crowded. Not only is it impossible to find a bench to sit on, but you can't even find a spot to lie down on the grass... so it might be a good idea to visit it outside the tourist season

This is a lovely park right between the old town and the lake. It is large with a range of options from shady treed areas to open spaces. There is a kids playground that is fenced off. You are right by the lake with plenty of water sport options available. A nice place to eat lunch, exercise or just relax.

We absolutely loved our trip to Annecy! I highly recommend taking a leisurely stroll along the waterfront and exploring this charming park. The views of Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains are absolutely stunning, and the gardens themselves are beautifully maintained and wonderfully inviting. It’s the perfect spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty of this picturesque French town.

The undisputed emblem of Annecy, proudly displayed in every tourist brochure, the Palais de l'Île manages the rare feat of being far more impressive as a photo than as an actual place you can visit. If you walk past it, admire the exterior, and keep going - you’ve already seen everything that really matters Stepping inside, any expectation of a medieval atmosphere is effectively crushed. The interior resembles everything except a medieval building. Apart from the stone walls and a few stubborn wooden doors that clearly survived by accident, almost nothing inside shows the slightest interest in the castle's actual past. The exhibition is a thrilling collection of pictures and documents about the city's recent evolution — because, apparently, that's exactly why people pay to visit a medieval monument. The single room containing something vaguely historic is the kitchen, which naturally becomes a human traffic jam, as all visitors eventually realize that this is the only place where there is anything remotely worth seeing. Taking photos here is an excellent exercise in patience (and disappointment). Navigation is another challenge. The signage is so unclear that you might skip rooms entirely (not that you'd notice) and then, without any warning, you open a door and find yourself back on the street, standing exactly where you started. This is usually the moment when tourists stop, look around in confusion, and ask the inevitable questions: "Wait... that's it? Did I miss something? Or was the visit really over before it began?" So, in conclusion, this is a perfect example of how a postcard can promise a medieval experience and deliver a (really short) walk through the Land of Boredom.

Island of Stories. Palais de l’Île is the building Annecy uses to tell its own story. Once saved from demolition and listed as a historic monument in 1900, it has become the old town’s emblem, printed on brochures, fridge magnets and “Venice of the Alps” posters. Inside, the former audience rooms and cell blocks now house the city’s architecture and heritage centre, with models, plans and temporary exhibitions about how Annecy grew around its canals. The museum route leads you through damp former prison cells at water level and back up into well-lit galleries, so the contrast between punishment and interpretation is hard to miss. In a compact space, you move from medieval stronghold to modern heritage brand in a few rooms.

Yes, there are lockers to store your backpack, and a storage rack that locks your bag up, in the entrance to the gift shop. The museum is lovely. Certainly visit it if you’re in town. It’s a nice collection of Landscape paintings of the local area, a little bit of modern art, some modern photos, some old furniture, and a little bit of religious art. I enjoyed it.

The tickets doesn't cost a lot like the two castles near Fussen, and we enjoyed this castle way better. This place has long ancient history based on the geographic location of Annecy. It's well maintained and illustrated. Standing there, feeling the history happened in the room, there was no pretentious. It was an experience that we didn't expect before we walked in.

Really beautiful castle, well preserved. I was there over Easter weekend, and since it was the first Sunday of the month, entrance was free. The exhibitions inside are truly interesting; absolutely recommended if you're visiting Annecy!

Excellent contemporary floor - keep climbing the stairs - it's worth it. There is a wild funny video that greets you. There are also some giant story telling photos that combine reality and fiction (pre AI I believe.) To make it more fun they have magnetic puzzles of those images that you can play around with. Breugel's Massacre of the Innocents was in a temporary exhibit on the 2nd floor when I visited. Seeing it was thrilling! The stairs are very challenging however and the space is not handicap accessible. If you find this helpful please like and follow.

I visited Carrefour Chambéry Chamnord and overall it feels like a regular large Carrefour at first. The store is spacious, well lit and the aisles were quite easy to walk through. 🛒 What I really liked was the international section with “Produits du Monde”. There are products from different countries, such as Japan, Korea, Spain, Portugal and more. 🌍 The shelves looked well organized, and the flags above the aisles make this area easy to find and also nicer to browse. You can tell that some effort went into this part of the store. There are a few really interesting products, especially if you enjoy trying snacks, sauces or ingredients from other countries. 🍜🍪 Apart from that, it is still a normal big supermarket, but the international corner makes the shopping experience more enjoyable and a bit more interesting. My overall impression was positive.

Very nice church with beautiful modern stained glass windows. The staff was wonderful and they had a nice collection of candles. The view from the hill is very beautiful as well.

Walked all the way around the basilica until we reached it. Awe inspiring. It’s a newer church, but the craftsmanship of the church itself is nice. Inside the church is magical all it’s own. The garden/yard of the church must be private and the church must keep that to themselves. Well worth the visit with nice views of Annecy.

Annecy old town is a must see attraction but it is busy and parking is awkward, especially in an oversized vehicle. The lake is lovely and lots of people were cycling round it, but beware of the very steep roads at one point, and it is a LONG way round!

Lake Annecy is a must visit. Personally I took a bus from Geneva to Annecy. This place is literally heaven on earth. I think the photos/videos I took can explain how beautiful the place is. I took the boat for 30 minutes and we cruised around and the weather was a bit sunny. I have noticed that there are a lot of elders here, I barely see kids with young families. The lake is huge, while I was asking about renting boats the guy told me there are some boats you can ride yourself, but I’ve never sealed a boat before, so I went to the wooden boats section.

Wow factor: 10/10. Stepping out of Annecy's charming streets onto the breathtaking lakefront, framed by crystal-clear water and towering mountains, is an unforgettable moment. 🏞️ While you can take a quick swim here, this area is best enjoyed for its incredible scenery. Stroll along the promenade, relax, take photos, or rent a boat or watercraft to experience the lake from the water. If you're looking to spend the day swimming, head a few minutes around the lake to one of the many designated beach areas with easier water access

The markets in Annecy were really cool. There was such a variety of things to buy, from clothing and trinkets to olives, tapenade, cheeses, fruit, jams, souvenirs, wood carvings, and more. The market stretches through several streets and winds around multiple blocks. It does feel quite touristy, so you're likely to pay a bit more for some items. That said, the charm, energy, and atmosphere make it well worth a visit, whether you're looking to buy a few souvenirs or simply browse. It was also entertaining to watch people shopping, from those picking up a few small items to others leaving with several enormous wheels of cheese (leaving me guessing... why?). We ended up getting a table at a nearby restaurant overlooking part of the market, and it was a great place to people-watch. We visited on a Friday because we'd heard more vendors were open that day, and that was certainly true, but it also made for a very busy experience. If you're visiting in the summer and prefer a quieter pace, I'd probably recommend going on another weekday. Most of the main vendors should still be there, but with noticeably smaller crowds.

We arrived in Annecy on a Sunday at noon and walked through the market. On Sunday it was huge and very busy. We stayed 3 nights and were able to go again on Tuesday morning. The market was smaller and less busy than on Sunday. We bought some delicious food and pastries.

We enjoyed following the peaceful trail from Annecy up to the animal park. The hike is hilly but not too strenuous. The deer are beautiful and we were lucky to quietly walk and get close to them. There were also mountain goats. The hike included a beautiful look out points over the city. We spent about 1.5hrs walking there and back. There are rustic toilets at the top

A beautiful park with animals, the only one I could find in Annecy so far. It's very relaxing there, and 50 m away there is a great spot from which you can see a beautiful city landscape. It may be hard to get there on foot, car recommended. Although, not impossible and totally worth it. Great place, must visit. Bring vegetables with you, there is only bread to feed the animals there, and it's not very good for them.
Peter Vanham★★★★★
Only three types of animals - deer, bigger deer, and goats. But the space is nevertheless huge, as it is part of a giant forested mountain. There are plenty of options for kids to play creatively, such as hide and seek, look for sticks or chestnuts, build a camp, and for sporty people there are dozens of trails.
Alexey Subach★★★★★
Nice park with animals (mostly deer), the entrance was free. The park itself is pretty small so if you climb up just for it - don’t have too high expectations
K★★☆☆☆
I just visited this place and I assumed animals are free but they live in a borderline and its kinda sad to watch them not being free in the mountain. Some of them look good physically but I saw two animals looked unhealthy

Beautiful historic bridge with stunning views of the Thiou river and the old town. Perfect photo spot, especially at sunset when the light hits the buildings just right. It gets a bit crowded during peak hours, but the charm of the place makes it worth it. A must-see when visiting Annecy, I’m in love with this city!
Loo Yeo★★★★★
Pont Perrière is a short stone bridge where Annecy’s old centre tightens around the Thiou. Cross it and the line runs into Saint-François de Sales, while the Palais de l’Île sits obliquely across the water, caught between façades and the channel rather than placed straight ahead. The name adds its own pull backwards to Porte Perrière, the old way out from the walled town below the castle. Under the arches, the river is Lake Annecy’s outlet, later kept in check by sluices after flooding made the flow too important to leave unmanaged. The bridge does not need to dominate the view; it makes the surrounding town close, angled and legible.
Catsy Mirr★★★★★
Very stunning views! Highly recommended if you visit Annecy to check out this place. Great restaurants, coffee shoppes and gelatos around the area. My photo/vids prolly cant give enough justice how picturesque these views in person. No wonder this place is called as "The Venice of the Alps" 🤭

From the outside, it looks simple and modest compared to other grand European cathedrals, but once you step inside, the atmosphere is calm, quiet, and surprisingly elegant. The interior has a clean, classical design with beautiful arches and subtle details that give it a peaceful charm. It’s not overly crowded, so you can take your time, sit down, and enjoy a moment of silence away from the busy streets outside. It’s not about being the biggest or most famous cathedral—it’s about the calm feeling you get while you’re there. A nice quick stop while exploring Annecy. 👉 Check my profile for more travel tips and hidden spots.

The Cathedral stands in between buildings near to the Police Municipal. There are two stairways that bring you to the front (entrance) of the church. The Cathedral holds a charm of the old very well, does not look run down like some of the other churches around. Still, the Cathedral needs maintenance. The high ceiling of the Cathedral is able to enable any hymns sung in the Cathedral sound majestic. The doors of the Cathedral stood out since many of the other church doors seem to have been replaced with plywood or so it seems. The main structure of the church is made of granite and marble. The interior of the church seems to have been designed splendidly using good wood. The doors are open to public since the church is situated in the middle of touristy areas.
Wisanu Tuntawiroon★★★★★
Originally constructed between 1535 and 1538 as a chapel for the Cordeliers convent, the building gained prominence in 1538 when it became the refuge for the Bishop of Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. Elevated to cathedral status in 1822, it has since stood as the seat of the Diocese of Annecy. Notably, during the French Revolution, the cathedral was repurposed as a “Temple of Reason,” reflecting the era’s secular ideologies .

At Quai de l’Île, Annecy’s canal view rests on a 19th-century reworking of the Thiou. The quay set a straighter bank along the water and drew the riverfront façades into a more ordered line, opposite the older Palais de l’Île. Across the channel, water doors and mooring rings preserve hints of an earlier town that dealt with the river at building level. The Thiou had long supplied mills, craft activity and later industry, so its current carried economic pressure as well as water. From the 1870s, sluices regulated the lake outlet, flood risk and industrial flow. The view gathers these changes in plain sight: ordered façades, remade bank, managed current.
Catalin Hulea★★☆☆☆
The city of Annecy is nicknamed the “Venice of the Alps,” and I honestly don’t know whether the people who say that have never actually seen Venice… or if their imagination is so powerful that it could put even the most famous sci-fi authors to shame. So, to be clear: if you have a small mountain river for which you dig a channel to prevent flooding, and that channel sometimes splits in two, you don’t suddenly have a “little Venice”—you just have a city with a stream running through it. To be honest, my walk along the Thiou River reminded me more of Dutch towns — but of course it sounds far more glamorous, and far easier to pronounce “Little Venice” than “Little ’s-Hertogenbosch” (yes, this is actually a Dutch city, not a keyboard malfunction). Now, to be fair, the city is picturesque, but… 1. It’s incredibly crowded, comparable only to the tourist centers of major European capitals, except here everyone is holding ice cream 2. Speaking about ice cream - Annecy is full of tourist traps — I saw dozens of people queueing to buy the city's famous ice cream, which is no different from the anonymous ice cream sold just a few streets away (if you’re in the area, try a small experiment and see if you can tell the difference) 3. The terraces are packed, and many of them have prices that shocked me — and I lived for three years in London, one of the most expensive cities in the world 4. The historical buildings converted into museums don’t live up to expectations — in many of them there is (almost) nothing to see Final rating: 2 stars for a visit in the middle of the tourist season. The experience would probably be far more enjoyable at any other time of year, preferably when half of Europe isn’t there with you.
Emir Celâl Er★★★★★
La venice des alpes… If you visit somewhere close, such as Geneva for example, you should visit here. Don’t forget to eat a pizza too.

Situated along the Thiou River, Quai de l’Île is renowned for its colorful facades and historic buildings that exude a Venetian charm. The quay’s vibrant atmosphere is complemented by the presence of local cafes and artisanal shops, inviting visitors to indulge in delicious French pastries and unique souvenirs . The quay is home to the iconic Palais de l’Île, a 12th-century structure that has served various roles, including a courthouse and a prison. Today, it functions as a museum, showcasing Annecy’s rich history and architectural heritage .

A beautiful view of the surrounding area is available from the panoramic tower (dungeon). In front of the castle are beautiful gardens, with several areas for resting or a picnic. A small bar and a souvenir shop are located near the ticket office.

We loved this chateau!!! A little gift shop where you buy tickets and some treats to buy like ice cream. The views from the top are beautiful over the gardens. So glad we went there!!! Climb the spiral stairs case and look out of top. We didn’t do the tour as it’s a little in English but this was a highlight of our 3 day trip to Annecy!

We spend a great time here. The castle js beautiful as is the surrounding landscape abd there's a treasure hunt for children where you solve clues around the castle and get a candy from a treasure chest. Our daughter had a blast. worth a visit. There are cows when you leave the castle and go down on the right and a good photo option

I have to be honest, I am not a great fan of castles and don’t get what all the fuss is about. However this one was great - it was personal, it was quiet, it didn’t feel like a tourist death trap and it was actually kind of cool to explore and discover on your own. Pro tip: Come at 10AM when they are opening. You will be the only one.

A beautiful castle near Annecy. We visited it on an half day tour, organized by the Tourist offiece of Annecy, combined with a visit to Gorges du Fier. A guide tells you about the history of the castle and you can see the collection of historic objects from aroud the world, that belonged to one of the owners of the castle. You can also climb the tower to see great views of the area.

Practical Tips for Your Annecy Visit

Navigating a town that serves both as a historical monument and an active sporting hub requires a bit of insider knowledge. To make the most of your time in this alpine paradise, consider the following advice regarding timing, logistics, and local etiquette. These tips will help you avoid common tourist pitfalls and experience the city like a seasoned traveler.

  1. Choose Your Season Wisely: Annecy transforms drastically. Summer (June-August) offers vibrant swimming and water sports but comes with heavy crowds and higher prices. Spring and Autumn provide milder weather, perfect for hiking and cycling with fewer tourists.
  2. Book Water Activities in Advance: If you plan to rent a pedalo, motorboat, or stand-up paddleboard on Lake Annecy during July or August, reserve your slot early in the morning or the day before. The shoreline gets incredibly busy after 11:00 AM.
  3. Invest in the "Annecy City Pass": If you intend to visit multiple museums, the Château, and use public transport or the tourist train, this pass can save you a significant amount of money.
  4. Explore the Old Town Early or Late: The narrow streets of the Vieille Ville are magical but can become bottlenecked during midday. Visit at sunrise for empty photography opportunities or after 6:00 PM when the day-trippers have left and the restaurants begin setting up for dinner.
  5. Pack Layers for the Mountains: Even if it is scorching by the lake, temperatures drop significantly at higher altitudes like La Tournette or the Semnoz. Always bring a windbreaker and sturdy shoes if you leave the city center.
  6. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle: Annecy has numerous public fountains with potable water. It is both an eco-friendly and economical way to stay hydrated while walking the cobblestones.
  7. Understand the Restaurant Hours: Unlike larger French cities, many traditional Savoyard restaurants in Annecy close between lunch and dinner service (roughly 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM). Plan your meal times accordingly to avoid getting stranded hungry.

The true beauty of Annecy lies in the contrast between the reflective stillness of the lake at dawn and the lively chatter of the market stalls at noon. It is a place that asks you to slow down, breathe in the clean mountain air, and appreciate the craftsmanship of a city that has stood for centuries.

Whether you are paddling across the turquoise water or getting lost in the arcaded streets, Annecy leaves an imprint on your memory that lingers long after you have returned home. It is not just a destination; it is an atmosphere that defines the very best of the French Alps.
