12 Best Shopping Areas in Oviedo

Oviedo, the elegant capital of Asturias, offers a shopping experience that feels refreshingly authentic and deeply rooted in local tradition. Unlike sprawling, anonymous retail parks, this northern Spanish city invites you to wander through historic streets where family-run businesses have thrived for generations. The blend of old-world charm and contemporary retail creates a unique atmosphere that encourages slow, deliberate browsing rather than rushed consumerism.

The city’s compact size is a major advantage for shoppers, allowing you to traverse distinct commercial zones entirely on foot. From the shadow of the Gothic Cathedral to the bustling modern thoroughfares, every district has its own distinct personality and specialty. You will find everything from high-end Spanish fashion labels to artisan food markets brimming with Asturian cheese and cider.

Understanding the layout of Oviedo is key to maximizing your time and budget. While the historic center is the undisputed heart of commerce, the surrounding neighborhoods offer hidden gems that many tourists often overlook. Knowing where to go for specific items—whether it is a leather handbag, a local pastry, or a vintage book—will significantly enhance your visit.

The local shopping culture here is characterized by a relaxed pace and a high standard of personal service. Shopkeepers are generally knowledgeable and proud of their merchandise, often willing to engage in conversation about the provenance of their goods. This human connection is a stark contrast to the impersonal nature of online shopping and large chain stores.

As you plan your itinerary, consider that many traditional shops in Oviedo still observe the sacred hours of the siesta. While large department stores and international brands remain open throughout the day, independent boutiques often close between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Planning your shopping around these hours will ensure you do not miss out on the best local finds.

Furthermore, Oviedo is a city that values quality over quantity. You will notice a prevalence of locally sourced products, particularly in the food and fashion sectors. Investing in a piece of Asturian craftsmanship or a regional delicacy is not just a purchase; it is a way to take a tangible piece of the region’s culture home with you.

To help you navigate this retail paradise, we have compiled a guide to the most distinctive and rewarding shopping areas the city has to offer. Whether you are hunting for a chic outfit, a unique souvenir, or the perfect bottle of sidra, these locations represent the best of what Oviedo has in store.

This shopping mall has 3 or 4 floors. It is so big you could easily get lost in it, and forget where you got in.
Fish★★★★☆
The top floor has some strange stores that aren't very good. But most of it is great, especially the big grocery store (Hipercor), the home items (Corte Ingles), Rodera, gourmet market, bakeries, and the little cafés. Hipercor is a lifesaver because they have a big selection, especially Asian, Mexican, American, English and vegan/vegetarian items that most of the local markets don't have. It can be a bit more expensive, though, so it's best just to get the specialty items and buy the rest of your groceries elsewhere.

Huge mall where you can buy everything

A big shopping center in the center of Oviedo that I like

Highly recommended. I love visiting Salesas center which contains numerous stores, in particular a comprehensive scope of El Corte Ingles departments, where you can find just about anything you want and have a lunch in one of the cafes.

This is a massive place. I’m not even sure if it’s one big store or more of an area with a lot of different shops and establishments. The only downside is that it’s a bit far if you’re relying on public transportation. It’s probably much more convenient if you have a car. That said, you can pretty much find everything you need here, so it’s worth the trip if you’re planning to do a lot of shopping.
Darren Wyles★★★★★
Large, spacious, with ample parking, and good public transport links. Intu has it all. There are restaurants, Italian, Mexican, Asian and, of course Spanish. There are also the usual fast food joints, Macdonalds and Burger King. There is something for all budgets. There is a cinema with all the latest films, you can also find some in original language. There is a bowling alley and a big arcade, so many things to do other than shop. Intu also has two supermarkets, one at each end of the shopping centre, Eroski and Mas y Mas (downstairs). The centre has an area where you can leave the young kids, this area is well supervised, but you might need to wait as it's very popular. There is also an area for the older kids where they can play with fixed tablets. Most of the big stores can be found here, concluding: H&M, footlocker, Zara, apple, fnac, Levi's, Mango, and many others. If you need a coffee, there are several scattered around the centre. If you need an haircut there are both mens and womens. I'm sure I've missed something, so, go along and see for yourself. It's well worth the visit. Btw - IKEA is a couple of minutes walk from the centre.
Tatiana Piterova★★★★★
A big mall with lots of things to do besides shopping. It’s handy that ikea is by its side, always easy to park, but we usually come here during the week. On weekends it may be overcrowded.

A decent place in a good location. This place is a popular place for all ages. There is a very good cinema showing the latest releases. There is a very good sized gym for those who want to lose a couple of pounds, that they gained after visiting McDonald's, which is also here. There is an hairdressing salon, also another play area for kids. There are restaurants, fashion outlets, including opticians, sports shops and phone shops. Everything is spread over three floors, all are easily accessible for everyone, wheelchairs are not a problem here as the escalators are like the ones in airport, without steps. Carrefour is also here and it's massive, everything to fit your needs. This place doesn't have everything, but it is still more than worth a visit.
ROBIN★★★★☆
Good shopping mall with food places to eat in Macdonalds/ KFC / and food supermarket Carrefours plus 14 screen cinema and many others.

Super clean and not too busy. Just like the whole of Oviedo. Best to research the shops before going as it's not too big. There is a bigger shopping center on the outside of Oviedo. But I can't say anything bad because Oviedo is the best City in Spain. Thank you Mr Alcalde

Nice shopping mall with cocktail bar, several restaurants, meat shop that stays open till late.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at NM. Staff was very attentive to every detail, and each dish was expertly crafted and not heavy. There were not any highs and lows to this tasting menu like other places. Everything was delicious! If you are in Oviedo, make time for this place. The courses where we could have had 20 courses of just that dish were the Spring peas, smoked eel, and "cocido"broth, Blue Lobster and lemon-sage buttermilk, the hake, the celery curd and herbs granite, and the wild duck.

Lots of eating places and very close to old part, which was great for walking around and generally relaxing for tourists.

Emily Johnson★★★★★
A large and well-located department store in the heart of Oviedo’s main shopping street. The selection of fashion, home goods, electronics and gourmet products is broad, and it’s convenient to find many categories all under one roof, including a supermarket and a café with views over Calle Uría. However, the experience can feel a bit touristy and busy, especially on weekends, and some customers report that service and product availability can be inconsistent compared with expectations for a flagship department store. The layout also feels traditional rather than modern, which may not appeal to everyone. Despite this, it remains a decent stop for shopping and cafés if you’re exploring central Oviedo.
Sarah Saunders★★★★★
What a large shop and great that it’s in an out of town area. We got the bus. It must bring in some employment and business to this area of Gijón. Amazing choice of goods.

Open air market for food and clothes on Thursday’s. Fun to wander and check out the goods and the people. The indoor market is amazing fish, meat, fruits and vegetables, cheese, olives. A delight to see and wouldd love to have this in my home town for shopping.
G Mac★★★★★
A great covered market in the center of the old town. The main produce for sale is fish though there are meats, vegetables, pastries, grains, and fruit. There are restrooms which you pay to use. This is a feature of Oviedo : free public bathrooms are not a thing.
Mister Morelight★★★★☆
Built in 1885, Mercado El Fontan is Oviedo central market serving the city. Flaunting an Art Nouveau style, it is in dire needs of some much needed renovations (just better lighting would do a lot) but let that stop you and entering the fine selection of specialized store. We thought the fish store was especially attractive that day with a wide selection of fresh fish. Free to enter, one of your must-stops while in Oviedo. P.S.: if this review and pictures were useful in planning your visit, please leave a 👍, thank you 🙏

Good market . We prefer Sunday as you get the usual market traders plus the flee market . Saturday's have the indoor market which is very good
Seokjin Ham★★★★★
A traditional market where you can find fresh produce, seafood, meat, cheese, and Sidra (Asturian cider), a local specialty. It is a must-visit for those looking to experience the authentic local culture of Oviedo. The market features modern facilities for a comfortable shopping experience, and outside, numerous street vendors add to the lively atmosphere.

Insider Tips for Shopping in Oviedo

To truly shop like a local in Oviedo, it helps to understand the unwritten rules and rhythms of the city. While the experience is generally laid-back and welcoming, a little insider knowledge can save you time and help you discover the true soul of Asturian commerce. These practical pointers will ensure your shopping expedition is both efficient and enjoyable.

Time your visit around the siesta. While major department stores like El Corte Inglés stay open all day, the charming independent boutiques in the old town typically shut their doors from roughly 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Use this downtime to enjoy a long lunch or a coffee in a nearby plaza, then return when the shutters roll back up for the evening paseo.

Bring cash for the markets. While credit cards are widely accepted in established stores, many vendors at street markets and smaller artisan food stalls prefer cash. Having a selection of smaller bills and coins on hand will make transactions smoother and may even help you negotiate a better price on bulk items like cheese or charcuterie.

Look for the "Hecho en Asturias" label. If you are searching for authentic souvenirs, keep an eye out for products that indicate local manufacturing. From ceramics and textiles to gourmet canned seafood and blue cheese, this label guarantees you are buying a genuine piece of the region rather than a mass-produced import.

Embrace the art of the "paseo." Shopping in Oviedo is a social activity. Do not be surprised if the streets become incredibly crowded in the early evening, around 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This is the traditional time for locals to stroll, window shop, and socialize. Join the flow, walk slowly, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere rather than rushing to get through the crowds.

Bring your own shopping bag. In line with European environmental standards, plastic bags are not always free or readily available. Carrying a sturdy canvas tote or a foldable bag is not only eco-friendly but also practical for carrying your purchases as you walk between the different shopping zones.

Exploring the shopping areas of Oviedo is about more than just acquiring goods; it is an immersion into the daily life and culture of Asturias. The architecture, the aromas wafting from sidrerías, and the chatter of locals create a sensory backdrop that makes every transaction memorable. By venturing beyond the main square and exploring the side streets, you will uncover the true character of this historic city.

Whether you leave with a suitcase full of local delicacies or simply a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, the experience of shopping here stays with you. It serves as a reminder of a city that values tradition, quality, and human connection in an increasingly fast-paced world. Take your time, engage with the locals, and you will find that Oviedo offers one of the most rewarding retail experiences in northern Spain.
