Finding a reliable pharmacy in an unfamiliar city, or even in your own neighborhood during an urgent moment, can be a stressful experience. Whether you need a specific prescription refilled, advice on a minor ailment, or essential baby supplies, knowing exactly where to go saves valuable time. For residents and visitors navigating the historic streets of Menorca’s capital, understanding the local pharmacy landscape is essential for peace of mind.
Mahón (Maó) is not a sprawling metropolis, but its labyrinthine old town and portside geography can make locating essential services tricky. While the city is well-equipped with healthcare facilities, pharmacies operate on a distinct schedule compared to typical retail stores. They follow strict regulatory hours, rotating "on-call" duties for nights and weekends, which means your nearest location might not always be open.
The city centre serves as the primary hub for pharmaceutical services, offering a high concentration of establishments within walking distance of the main squares and pedestrian zones. This density is a significant advantage for those staying in the heart of the city or arriving by cruise ship. You rarely have to walk far to find professional medical advice, often available in multiple languages to cater to the international tourist crowd.
Navigating these services requires more than just a map; it requires an understanding of the Spanish pharmacy system. Unlike some countries where over-the-counter medication is found in supermarkets, in Spain, pharmacies (Farmacias) are the sole dispensers of all medicine. They are highly regulated, easily identifiable by a green cross sign, and staffed by highly trained professionals who can often diagnose minor issues without a doctor’s visit.
This guide focuses specifically on the core of Mahón, highlighting the locations where you can access these vital services. From historic establishments that have served the community for decades to modern shops near the bustling markets, we have curated a list to help you locate your nearest option. We will also cover the essential etiquette and practical tips for obtaining medication in Spain.
When you are dealing with health concerns, clarity is key. The following information is designed to streamline your search, ensuring you spend less time wandering the cobblestone streets and more time recovering or enjoying your trip. Here is a comprehensive look at the pharmacies located in the heart of Mahón.

Pharmacy very often open and of good advice. Convenient access with a small Drive. It should be noted that, upon request and with a sample, it takes care of having the water analyzed in a laboratory, which is very useful given the poor quality of the local water.

What a fantastic little pharmacy this is, developed a large itchy lump on my arm which was becoming more and more inflamed and my wife went in to ask if they could help. Straight away with no hesitation they said it’s a mosquito bite and proceeded to put a spray on my arm, no cost, just very helpful lovely people, where most would just try to sell you a miracle cure, these lovely, friendly people went out of their way to help.
You don’t get service like this any more, fantastic people.

Such a cute and amazing pharmacy. Besides having brands you cannot find anywhere else in Menorca, its owner, Piluca Barrau, is super skilled and always go above and beyond to help and advise on any need you might have. Her own brand, of which I took some products, is fantastic (specially recommend her eye contour and her foam cleanser). Her food suplements work extremely well too (hello sleeping supplements!). Super nice staff too, really recommend them. Keep up with the good job, team.

From Pinto (Madrid), I want to express my immense gratitude.
My daughter (20 years old) has suffered from recurrent urinary tract infections for years, even developing pyelonephritis. We've seen many specialists, and unfortunately, the solution was always the same: antibiotics as the first option.
Here, we found something completely different.
For the first time, someone looked beyond the immediate symptom and opted to strengthen her system with probiotics and prebiotics instead of resorting directly to antibiotics.
For us, it has truly been the best thing that has happened.
Not only because of the approach, but also because of the professionalism, dedication, and long-term vision for my daughter's health.
Thank you for demonstrating that another way of treating illness is also possible.

Terrible service. My son has bronchiolitis and we need to give him nasal washes. My husband just went to this pharmacy; it's 1 a.m. and my son can't sleep because of the mucus. He asked for Rhinodouche (salts for nasal irrigation), and a very rude employee told him they only dispense it with a prescription. We told her it's available without a prescription, that it's just salts, and she closed the window on us. I try to avoid this pharmacy because, besides not having many products, some of the employees don't treat customers well, but today was just outrageous.
I just called her to tell her that this isn't how things work in other pharmacies in Mahón, and she very rudely told me that they do have the product, so it's another thing entirely whether they want to give it to me, making it clear that she simply refused to give it to me.

What an incompetent person! The one on duty this morning refused to sell me a Dentispray because he said he couldn't sell it to me without a prescription. Dentispray doesn't need a prescription since it's available over the counter, and he told me to go to the emergency room because I needed a prescription for Dentispray. He has no idea. TERRIBLE SERVICE. On August 10, 2024, at 11:30 PM, we went to the pharmacy because it was the only one open in the area, and the man told us he couldn't sell any medication without a prescription. So far, so understandable. We went to the nearest hospital, and after almost two hours to get the prescription, we returned to the pharmacy. We asked to pay by card, and the man said no, only cash to avoid card payment surcharges. We explained that we had come specifically to get the prescription and didn't have any cash on us, and we were on vacation and not from the area. His response was that it wasn't his problem. (He literally told us it would be cheaper to give it to us for free and that it was our obligation to carry cash). Finally, after speaking to us rudely for a while, he agreed to charge us when we mentioned calling the police, since he wouldn't give us back the prescription either.
Nobody goes to the pharmacy at 1:30 in the morning for fun, and while it's not our obligation to carry cash, it is your obligation to dispense prescription medication regardless of the payment method. And if there's a limit on card payments, posting a sign specifying this is also mandatory. TERRIBLE SERVICE, NOT RECOMMENDED.

An excellent pharmacy in Mahón.
I asked them to store some medication for me during our trip, and they kept it for me.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Thank you so much for your professionalism, service, and kindness.
Thank you!!
Miguel Sánchez Jiménez★☆☆☆☆
My partner has been taking medication for over five years; it's always been available without a prescription at every pharmacy we've been to, both in Spain and abroad. Well, this is the only place where they refuse to dispense it without one.
Furthermore, as of June 2023, they still give you dirty looks for wearing your mask incorrectly or simply refuse entry if you're not wearing one.
So, the solution is to stop going there and go to other pharmacies in Mahón, of which, luckily, there are plenty to choose from.

My son lost his pacifier at dinner. I looked at the emergency room sign and it was the 24-hour pharmacy. I rang the bell for over 10 minutes and no one answered. Finally, the light came on and an older man spoke to me very rudely. I politely asked for an 18-month pacifier and his response was, "Come back tomorrow at 9 and buy it." He refused to sell it to me and spoke to me very rudely. What a scoundrel!

I've been to this pharmacy several times in the last few days, and I want to say that everyone who served me was very polite and helpful. I especially want to mention a young man and a woman with short, brown hair; they both wear glasses and were incredibly kind and friendly.
Also, this pharmacy has better prices than others nearby.
ABF★★☆☆☆
I used to go to this pharmacy because of its long-standing tradition and because I found it more affordable than others in the area. They also always had all the products I needed in stock.
I recently had a bad experience, as they refused to accept an electronic prescription, claiming they couldn't guarantee I hadn't purchased the same medication at other pharmacies. However, each Rempe prescription has an associated code, which is registered when the medication is dispensed, and therefore it cannot be reused.

I'm on vacation in Menorca, it's 1:16 AM, and one of us here had to go to this pharmacy because it was supposed to be on duty. It was for over-the-counter medication. When we arrived, a very rude and ill-mannered pharmacist told us that she had the right to refuse to dispense medication without a prescription. I find it unbelievable that, providing a service related to health, they would refuse to sell medication without a prescription, no matter how much they might refuse. The girl who helped us was incredibly rude and arrogant. It's a shame to encounter employees with so little empathy and humanity. Without a doubt, the worst pharmacy I've ever seen. I hope that "employee" never needs help in a situation where it's necessary. Like I said, NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL.

The experience at Menorca Airport was pretty straight forward. Go through security and you’ll be in the main shopping/duty free area which is fairly small and ok with choice. It does get very busy so there’s plenty of seating. The shops are small too.
One thing is the women’s toilets do have queues most of the time so make time before for depart. The men’s toilets are pretty small inside so I assume the women’s toilets must be similar.

I want to highlight the excellent service I received at the Menorca airport pharmacy, where Luis provided exceptional assistance. From the very first moment, he was friendly, kind, and highly professional, recommending exactly what I needed to prevent a minor mishap from ruining my vacation.
Thanks to his help, everything turned out alright, and I've been able to start enjoying this beautiful island as it deserves. It's wonderful to begin your visit to Menorca by meeting people like him, who exude the hospitality and warmth of this land from the very first moment.
Now I can say that we are delighted with the island, and I will undoubtedly be able to fully enjoy my kayaking excursion in Cala Torret. Thank you, Luis, for making everything start so well!
Essential Tips for Visiting a Pharmacy in Mahón
Understanding the local nuances of the Spanish pharmaceutical system can save you from confusion, especially if you are visiting from abroad. While the pharmacists are highly competent and often speak English, the operational rules differ significantly from those in the UK or the US. Knowing what to expect before you walk through the door ensures a smoother transaction and better health outcomes.
1. Look for the Green Cross and "Farmacia" Signage
Spanish pharmacies are universally marked by a green cross, often illuminated or animated. In the historic centre of Mahón, these signs are sometimes subtle due to heritage building regulations, so look carefully at shopfronts. If the cross is lit, the pharmacy is currently open for business.
2. Check the On-Call (Guardia) Schedule
If you need medication late at night, on a Sunday, or during a public holiday, a standard pharmacy will be closed. Every pharmacy door displays a printed schedule (Horario de Farmacias de Guardia) listing which location is open 24 hours in the area. You can also find this information online or at local health centres. Do not assume the pharmacy closest to your hotel is the one that is open.
3. Understand Prescription vs. Over-the-Counter Rules
If you have a prescription from a non-EU country, it may not be valid in Spain. While pharmacists can sometimes dispense emergency medication at their discretion, it is best to have a digital prescription or a letter from your doctor. For common ailments like headaches, allergies, or colds, simply describe your symptoms to the pharmacist; they are trained to provide the appropriate over-the-counter remedy.
4. Bring Your EHIC or Travel Insurance Details
If you are an EU citizen with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), present it with your prescription to receive subsidized pricing. For non-EU visitors, keep your travel insurance details handy, as you will likely need to pay the full retail price for prescription medication and claim reimbursement later. Pharmacies in Spain generally do not bill insurance companies directly.
5. Don’t Underestimate the Pharmacist’s Role
In Spain, the pharmacist (farmacéutico) is often the first point of contact for minor health issues. They can diagnose conditions like conjunctivitis, mild skin infections, or stomach upsets and dispense medication that would require a doctor’s visit in other countries. Do not hesitate to ask for advice; it is a free service and can save you a trip to the hospital.
Finding the right pharmacy in Mahón city centre is generally straightforward once you know where to look and how the system works. The concentration of services in this area ensures that whether you are near the Plaça de s’Esplanada or the Carmen district, professional help is usually just a short walk away.
Remember that while online maps are helpful, verifying the physical green cross and checking the posted hours is the most reliable method. By utilizing the local services respectfully and prepared with the right documentation, you can ensure your health needs are met efficiently, allowing you to focus on the beautiful surroundings of this Mediterranean port city.
