After a morning spent wandering the halls of the Prado, absorbing the genius of Velázquez, Goya, and El Bosco, the physical exhaustion can hit just as hard as the visual stimulation. You exit the grand doors onto the Paseo del Prado, blinking in the Madrid sun, and suddenly realize that intellectual hunger has quickly transformed into a very real, very urgent stomach rumble.
The area surrounding the museum is often dismissed by locals as a "tourist trap," a gastronomic desert where quality is sacrificed for convenience. While it is true that the immediate vicinity has its share of overpriced, mediocre menus aimed at weary travelers, it is also home to some genuine culinary gems if you know where to look.
You do not need to settle for a stale bocadillo or a microwaved plate of paella just because you are in the city center. With a little insider knowledge, you can find everything from historic taverns that have served bullfighters and artists to modern bistros redefining Spanish classics.
The key is to navigate the difference between the "Golden Mile of Art" and the quieter side streets of the Barrio de las Letras and Jerónimos. This guide is designed to save you from decision fatigue when your feet hurt and your blood sugar is low.
Whether you are looking for a quick, high-quality coffee and pastry, a long leisurely lunch with a bottle of Rioja, or a late-night dinner after the museum closes, the neighborhood has you covered.
Here are the best places to eat near the Prado that offer real value, excellent atmosphere, and, most importantly, food that honors the culinary reputation of Spain.

This place is amazing. We ordered a normal burger and salmon with mashed potatoes. The burger was perfect, the pickles were fresh and firm all the sauces were great. The salmon was light and full of flavor, the mashed potatoes were very fluffy and paired very nicely with the salmon. The lime pie was superb. The service was very fast and attentive, and the atmosphere was extremely good. Definitely recommend.

Super great experience!
Price quality the best you can find in Madrid.
I got the daily Menu for 15€ that includes first and second dish, drink, dessert or coffee and bread.
Food was very tasty, specially the meat. Rations where pretty good for a menu of this price.
Definitely will recommend it and come back again!
Great service from the stuff, Raul and the rest of the team.

Thanks for the experience!

The food was so good we came back a few days later. Both the Cury Chicken and Rice and the Pad Thai were excellent. Loved the Turkish ice tea!

Excellent experience. The food is good and the menu is very modern, perfect for trying new things. The place is cozy, perfect for going on a date or with friends. Price is ok, matches the quality and service. Food came quickly and the drinks were good. A safe option to try something different when traveling Madrid.

The food was absolutely delicious, especially the sea bass ,onion soup, huevos rotos with Iberian ham and truffle risotto. Sebastian was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely come back!

When we arrived they didn't serve coffee because their coffee machine was broken. But we stayed to drink a lemonade. It's very nice inside, they have many tables. Avara has a few tables for 2 people near the place.

We had:
Tuna tartar - it was awesome with all the sides
Some steak - meat was really good, but side was not enough, and not so tasty (some kind of deep fried potato)
Desert - Carrot cake and Pavlova, perfect 😍
Service was okay, but their English wasn't, at the end we manage to comunicate.
For sure it's place with really good food and that's what matters.

Walk in customers on a cold afternoon after visit to Prado museum. Was happy that food was being served from 1230pm onwards. Enjoyed the hearty chicken soup and the flavourful pumpkin soup.

Murillo Café feels like one of those places you don’t expect to find outside Venezuela. I tried several things and everything was on point, but the polvorosa de pollo really stood out. It instantly took me back to Venezuela, where I had it many times growing up, pure comfort food, the kind that brings memories with every bite.
The tequeños were light and crispy, not oily, and clearly made with care. The numpias were another favorite, crunchy, flavorful, and even better dipped in soy sauce, which adds a subtle Asian twist without taking away from what makes them special.
The sliders were kind of normal, nothing special.
What truly completes the experience is the attention. It’s warm, natural, and welcoming, making you feel at home without trying too hard. Murillo Café delivers authenticity, nostalgia, and genuinely good food.

We absolutely loved La Malontina!
It was, without a doubt, our favorite restaurant in Madrid and the best meal we had during our entire visit.
Everything was exceptional. From the delicious, authentic food to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is cozy, beautiful, and full of charm, making you feel like you’re experiencing the real Madrid.
The service was outstanding. Roberto took wonderful care of us, and all of the ladies on the service team were incredibly kind, friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to help. Their hospitality made our lunch even more memorable.
Thank you for such a wonderful experience. We will definitely recommend La Malontina to anyone visiting Madrid, and we can’t wait to come back on our next trip! Muchas Gracias!

Our best meal in Spain let alone Madrid. We’d eaten here for years ago and remembered it as we entered. Only 8 tables, can seat no more than 20 so you need a reservation. They brought amazing bread with roasted peppers to start. We had the Galician clams special in green sauce that was superb redolent with garlic and herbs. Then the whole monkfish baked simply with oil salt and herbs with potatoes. Dessert was a chocolate cookie, think brownie, with salted caramel gelato washed down with espresso. The white wine was their recommendation from Galicia and was fantastic. Could not recommend this place more. And listen to the mailers recommendations. We didn’t have it but the pasta with prawn looked amazing also.
KS Chak★★★★★
After being turned away yesterday because they were full, we made sure to have a reservation today - and it was worth it! La Malontina is a very intimate, small space, so booking is essential.
The food was outstanding and beautifully presented.
High-quality ingredients and a cozy atmosphere. Definitely one of our highlight of our trip!
Marie Yang★★★★☆
The kindest server ever - they saw that I didn’t enjoy the leek and took it off the check without me even asking for it. The rest of seafood I ordered are all super fresh and amazing - highly recommend the clams and scallops.
Albert Ka Shing LAI★★★★★
We stumbled upon this amazing local Spanish restaurant with a hint of Asian fusion. We ordered the octopus stew and seared scallops, which were absolutely delicious and flavourful. My husband had the leeks and monkfish, both fresh and tasty. The attentive service and fantastic recommendations for our dishes made the experience even better. For desserts, the carrot cake is a must try. Highly recommend trying it if you’re in Madrid, and it is good value for money as we did have 3 glasses of wine as well. Points to note, better book a table in advance as it is a cozy restaurant with around 20 seats only.

We only went in for drinks at the bar but this place was absolutely adorable. The vibe was perfect and by the time we left there was a line out the door. Definitely make reservations! We tasted two very different vermouths and they were both spectacular. My husband had the pork belly tapas and said it was very good, as well.

What a fantastic place to sit, eat and drink. The decor is great the background music not too loud. We ordered food, iberico ham and fries. Along with a coffee and two cokes. These came to the table soon after. It tasted great couldn't fault any of it. The server was polite, friendly and very sympathetic to my attempts at Spanish. I can highly recommend eating here.

We had a great time at Revoltosa Prado. The drinks were excellent and the tapas were really delicious. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and nicely served.
The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable, making it a perfect place to stop for drinks and a bite to eat while exploring Madrid. We would definitely recommend it.

We happened to be staying in a hotel near this restaurant and stopped in for dinner. It was absolutely amazing. The standouts for us were the tomato and burrata dish, as well as the crispy pork belly. Both were so extremely flavourful and satisfying. We also tried the fried artichoke and burger, which were excellent. We then had the fried sobao for dessert and loved it. I would definitely dine here again specifically for the tomato and pork belly.

Had a great experience at this cafe. We had coffee and Diet Coke and split a piece of homemade bizcocho which was very delicious. Moist and buttery and a good size. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and we lacked nothing. We had a coffee on the way to an exhibit at Caixa forum. What a great decision. When the weather is warmer they have a nice little sidewalk terrace which also seems tempting.

A good spot to grab lunch.
I recommend the grilled chicken salad and the shrimp BaoBuns.
We also tried the mini kebabs, chicken quesadillas and the guacamole. Everything was delicious and got prepared quite quickly.

Great first menu del dia experience! I got the plato del dia (some sort of cous cous) which was simple but really good and fresh, as well as the churrasco patatas, with a thin sauce that was cumin-heavy but right up my alley. All for 13,50€ which was really worth it. I’m not sure if I was meant to get a dessert (I saw other tables get some sort of flan but maybe they just forgot) but it would’ve made it even more worth it. They got quite busy around 1pm but service kept up pretty well.

We enjoyed a lovely dinner here in Madrid after walking by in the afternoon and seeing people outside eating enormous bowls of mussels. Our server was very friendly and the food was delicious. Besides the mussels, we also enjoyed wonderfully garlicky scallops and a ravioli entree. Highly recommended!

Service was really good, servers were very helpful by explaining about the food. And, food was amazing especially the Olivier salad with tuna and prawns with Sardinia bread. Highly recommended.
Chris Hecht★★★★★
We were looking for something more substantial than tapas when we came across this restaurant. We had the tuna carpaccio, the gnocchi, and the organic chicken. Everything was cooked to perfection. The gnocchi was loaded with umami from the right amount of gooey cheese, with an accent of Iberian sausage and red sauce. The carpaccio with apples and cherry tomatoes was a great match on a hot day, and the organic chicken was well seasoned and juicy. The service was warm and friendly, and they had a wide assortment of drinks and desserts. Probably the best meal of our trip.

Saez Munoz (review prior to mine) said it all. Food was tasty, not particularly special nor memorable, service was lacking in engagement, Atmosphere = you should go.
Service wasn’t bad, but we expect excitement about recommendations and an acknowledging glance whenever they pass. We could feel something lacking, even without any issues. A bit underwhelming. Especially for the price.
J Smithy★★★☆☆
Overall a good experience but it lacked excellence because of a couple of minor issues which for the reputation the restaurant has and it’s on the Michelin Guide should not have happened. The welcome was warm and the table was perfect. We ordered our starters and one was the croquettes. Unfortunately these were simply placed on the table in a bowl with no attempt made at decoration etc, felt like we were in a normal Tapas bar rather than a restaurant, they were also served whilst our drinks were being poured. The other starter was presented well though cutlery was also present on the plate despite the table setting. The main course we both chose the sirloin and this dish tasted very good but needed some colour on the plate. The coffee ordered with dessert was missing though we were not charged. Our expectation was high and these minor points bring our rating down which is disappointing so hopefully the team can work with this feedback as we would not hesitate to recommend the restaurant. Also being a fan of history the staff did not make any attempt to offer a tour of the restaurant which I think would appeal to a lot of customers

Bodega de los Secretos is one of the most unique dining experiences in Madrid. From the moment you walk in, it feels like you've stepped into an underground castle, with stunning stone archways and historic vaulted chambers creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The ambiance alone makes this restaurant worth visiting.
The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout the entire evening. The wine selection was excellent, perfectly complementing an outstanding meal. Every dish was beautifully prepared and absolutely spectacular.
If you're looking for a memorable restaurant that combines incredible food, great wine, exceptional service, and a truly one-of-a-kind setting, Bodega de los Secretos is a must-visit in Madrid.

What a place!
I booked it months ago for me and my wife, and it was amazing! We had really nice place, the girls were so nice to talk to, the speak english really well. We had some croquetes with Iberico ham and tomato burrata for appetisers, and got some homemade bread with vegetable sauce. I was really amazed because bread is something important in our country, it was really nice and crunchy. For main dish she took rice with sea food, and I had grilled pyrenees entrecote and potatoes. The meat was so soft, so juicy, the flavours were amazing! The seafood risotto was also really good according to my wife, fresh, delitious!
We had some vine and there was no space for desert. The price was just little over 100 euros which is more than fair considering the amount of food we had and the place we went to. We will be returning to Bodega 100%!

One of the most fun birthday dinners I’ve had. Cocktails are top - food is amazing & music and staff are vibey! Don’t miss out on the dessert boat… unbelievable!

After a week of eating at incredible but traditional tapas restaurants, we wanted a more unique, non-traditional meal. Bestial did not disappoint. The interior design and deliberate plating of each meal were fun and inventive, and the food was delicious (especially the duck rice, patatas bravas and chicken sandwich). Our waitress, Aliette, was friendly and helpful. The restaurant also celebrated our son’s 14th birthday in a really special way.

The place is amazingly magical, the most beautiful and vibrant place I have ever seen and if someone likes colors and the sea🐙.
Well done for the interior designer!
However the food is average, truly nothing special.
Drinks are nice, and the style with the octopus, aquaman etc are supercute.
The service is average, they should be more attentive, I totally understand the busy hours, but the manager should handle enough stuff to have a better service experience in an establishment like this.
The toilet should be more clean.
Its a pity, but there is a lot to improve besides the design.
However i fully recommend to try this place.

went here and absolutely adored it! the vibe first of all is so cool with the decoration and the dj playing very hype songs. the seating isn’t very comfortable i will say. the service was good, nothing anormal. the food however was honestly spectacular, i didn’t expect it at all. we ordered edamame, scallops in this delicious sauce, the octopus and the beastly bikini. they were all delicious but i still no joke dream of the sandwich it was one of the best i’ve ever had. the mocktail was also yummy. the prices are respectable, honestly will be coming back here again!

This psychedelic party restaurant in the busy Barrio de Las Letras area of Madrid serves a creative comfort fusion menu from a theatrical kitchen where every dish arrives on a sculptural figure, an all Spanish wine list, attentive service in a psychedelic coloured neon lit interior that is pure visual entertainment.
We were 2 for the bestial lunch menu with bread & garlic butter, croquetas on a rainbow chameleon, scallops with lime zest on a smoking octopus shell, pulled pork bao on a mermaid, basque cheese cake with ice cream, glasses of Inclán Verdejo and Lara O Ribera del Duero 2023, Perrier and espresso served on iridescent shell saucers with ornate spoons for €50/pax.

We somehow stumbled into this tapas bar and it impressed us so much. The owner was very efficient and friendly and everything we ordered was great! Especially pleased with the Galatian octopus as it was flavourful and fantastically tender! The iberico cheek was a rare sight on the menu and was a delight to eat with the potato, Demi glaze sauce and bread!

Omg this was sooo good. We started with beers which have been wonderful on this trip though I have no idea what kind they are serve. Then we tried the sangria... chefs kiss...
For food we tried the gambas al ajillo (sauted shrimp) ... so delicious... then the chuletas lechal (fried lamb chops) and the pulpo à la parrilla (grilled octopus) . Fantastic! We finished with manchego cheese platter. Yum.
Overall it was a fantastic experience and Jose could not have been nicer to us.
Highly recommended. If I could give 6 stars I would.

This is a great little taverna that is away from the crowded tourist streets and restaurants of Madrid.
Be prepared to order in Spanish (which just means reading the menu and pointing when in doubt), as the waitress didn’t speak much English. This is also a plus in my book, since the place was more patronized by locals.
We had the house salad (Ensalate de Casa) which looks s bit daunting, but is delicious. Just be sure to pair the salty bits, like the anchovies and olives, with the tuna and tomatoes. We were honestly surprised by how well the flavors (tuna belly, tomato, anchovies, green olives, and olive oil) went together.
The chorizo is a must. In many places chorizo can get really salty, but this one was not. Very fresh, juicy, and the perfect amount of heat. Like the salad, the fries that came with the chorizo weren’t salty and added even more balance to the dish.
We also tried the tripe. It was not at all what we feared. No weird odor or “funk” to it. Super tender, but unfortunately, way too salty to enjoy even with bread.

We ate quite early compared to Spanish standards, but that wasn’t a problem since the kitchen is always open. The staff was very friendly and able to serve us in English.
We ordered two pizza’s and a pasta Amatriciana. The pasta was not to my taste as it seemed more like a sweet&sour sauce, but the pizza’s tasted great.
We finished off with a Panacotta and Tirimasu. These were great to finish of the diner.
The store has a nice mood and the music selection is absolutely awesome.
Thank you for the food.

Food was incredible, everything we ordered! the pizza and lasagna was delicious and we will definitely be back. Our server, Uliana, was very attentive and understanding because we spoke different languages so she did a great job understanding what we needed. Would truly give this place a 10/10 for their fresh food, which you can see being made, super calm and friendly atmosphere, and the menu was really easy to understand since they use photos and videos for literally each item. All the servers who brought us our food were so polite and friendly. This place is definitely a must try!!!

I can say atmosphere and wine (and probably pizza) is the best. I didn’t order a pizza for my first visit: I had mushroom risotto, it was a little bit under seasoned and goat cheese salad (unfortunately it had a little piece of foil inside). Service was friendly and relaxed. I chose this restaurant because I’m a solo traveler, I was hungry and stayed near by. I really loved red wine I was served.

This is a charming cute cafe with lovely food, nice ambience, good value for money & a very friendly host. The potato leek cold soup and quinoa salad is amazing, and the fish pie was simply delish. To pair that with sangria / tinto de verano tops it all.

Pristine service from Fernando, followed by the best lentil soup I’ve had in my life! The most unique thing here is the revolving menu on a daily basis. This component made me feel like I was 8 years old again at my Abuela’s house. Everything we ordered was simply majestic and this is a place that deserves much more accolades.

We went to Matilda after reading the reviews and will say that this place does surprise you . The food quality , taste and preparation is top class. We managed to get a table as we went in early but I can tell you that it is frequented by locals and tourists alike . We had avocado toast and a Spanish omelette and both were top class. Will definitely recommend to people visiting that area.

What a nice gem to find. It is a small cozy place. The waiter was wounderful a spoke very well English and French. He was paying attention to every little detail to make sure we had an extraordinary experience (which we had). We started with salad and gazpacho. I normally am not crazy about gazpacho but this one had watermelon in it, which intrigued me. What a great discovery!!! It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. We also had meat balls in tomato sauce and ham. Food & service were extraordinary. Very well priced and potions are generous. Best sangria I ever had. We were too full for desserts that looked fabulous on other tables. A must go place in Madrid
Tips for Dining Near the Prado
Navigating the restaurant scene in a high-traffic tourist zone requires a bit of strategy. To ensure you have a meal that matches the magnificence of the art you just viewed, you need to adapt to the local rhythm and know what to avoid. Here are a few essential tips to help you eat like a local rather than a passerby.
1. Respect the Spanish Meal Schedule
The kitchen hours in Madrid are rigid. If you want a full lunch, you need to be seated between 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM. If you try to eat a heavy meal at 12:00 PM or 6:00 PM, you will likely be relegated to a bar menu or find that many high-quality kitchens are "cerrado" (closed) until dinner service starts at 8:30 PM. Plan your museum visit to end right before the lunch rush.
2. Look for the "Menú del Día"
For the best value, ignore the à la carte menu and look for the "Menú del Día" (Menu of the Day). This is a fixed-price lunch menu that typically includes a starter, a main course, a drink, and dessert or coffee. In this neighborhood, prices can vary wildly; a good rule of thumb is to look for places offering this menu between €15 and €20 for the best balance of value and quality.
3. Avoid Menus with Photos and "Paella Every Day"
A sure sign of a tourist trap is a restaurant with laminated menus featuring photos of the food and advertising paella, pizza, and burgers simultaneously. Authentic Spanish restaurants in this area rarely need to show you pictures. If the menu is written in six languages and a host is standing outside trying to pull you in, keep walking. The best spots are often down quiet side streets with menus written only in Spanish on a chalkboard.
4. Check for the "Barra" vs. "Mesa" Pricing
In many traditional taverns, you will pay a different price depending on where you consume your food. Standing or sitting at the bar (barra) is often significantly cheaper than sitting at a table (mesa) on the terrace. If you are on a budget or just want a quick bite, head straight to the bar, order your tapa, and enjoy it standing up like a local.
5. Make Reservations for Dinner
While lunch can often be walked into if you arrive early, dinner in the Barrio de las Letras is a competitive sport. The best restaurants near the Prado are popular with both tourists and Madrileños. If you have your heart set on a specific place for dinner, call ahead or use an online booking platform. Otherwise, be prepared to wait or settle for a second choice.
6. Embrace the Sobremesa
Do not rush your meal. In Spain, eating is a social event, and the "sobremesa"—the time spent lingering at the table after the food is gone, chatting and digesting—is sacred. Waiters will not bring you the check until you ask for it ("La cuenta, por favor"). Take your time, rest your feet, and enjoy the atmosphere. It is the perfect way to recharge before heading back out into the city.
Exploring the culinary landscape around the Prado is an extension of the cultural experience of Madrid. The neighborhood is a tapestry of history, where you can dine in cellars that have existed for centuries or taste the innovative creations of a new generation of Spanish chefs.
By stepping just a block or two away from the main thoroughfare, you can trade the noise of the tour buses for the clinking of glasses and the aroma of slow-cooked meats. Whether you choose a historic tavern or a modern bistro, you will find that the perfect meal is the ideal way to reflect on the masterpieces you have just seen.
