12 Best Restaurants in Mérida, Spain

Mérida is a city where every street corner feels like a page from a history book, but its culinary scene tells an equally compelling story. Located in the heart of Extremadura, this ancient Roman capital is surrounded by some of Spain’s most prized agricultural land. From acorn-fed Iberian pork to smoky paprika and rich Torta del Casar cheese, the region’s pantry is nothing short of spectacular. Dining here is not just about sustenance; it is a deep dive into a culture that has been perfecting its recipes for centuries.

For many travelers, the allure of Mérida lies in its UNESCO-listed ruins and the haunting beauty of its Roman theater. Yet, after a long day of walking through ancient history, the promise of a perfectly grilled secreto ibérico or a chilled glass of Ribera del Guadiana is the perfect reward. The local dining scene remains refreshingly authentic, largely catering to locals who demand high-quality ingredients and traditional preparations. This means visitors get to experience the real Extremadura, far from the tourist-trap menus found in larger Spanish cities.

The city’s gastronomy is defined by its simplicity and respect for raw materials. You will find menus dominated by wild game, rich stews, and the famous migas, a hearty dish of fried breadcrumbs often served with peppers and pork. The tapas culture here is also incredibly strong; many bars still offer a free tapa with a drink, a tradition that has sadly disappeared in much of the country. This generosity of spirit extends to the portion sizes, which are usually generous and meant to be shared.

Choosing where to eat in Mérida can be overwhelming, especially with the high concentration of quality establishments around the Plaza de España and the Calle John Lennon. Whether you are looking for a Michelin-recommended tasting menu or a bustling local bar with barrels of wine, the city delivers. The key is knowing what to look for: look for places with terraces facing the ancient monuments, or tuck into a side street where the smell of garlic and olive oil fills the air.

This guide is designed to cut through the noise and direct you to the absolute best tables in town. We have considered not just the food, but the atmosphere, service, and value for money to provide a well-rounded list. While Extremaduran cuisine is hearty and meat-centric, we have also included options for vegetarians and those seeking modern, creative takes on classic flavors. You do not need to be a food critic to eat well here; you just need to know where to go.

Below, you will find a curated list of the top dining destinations that define Mérida’s current culinary landscape. These are the places that locals recommend to their friends and where chefs go on their days off. We have focused on establishments that offer consistency, ensuring that your meal will be memorable for all the right reasons.

Whether you are visiting for a weekend or a week, this list will help you navigate the best of Extremaduran hospitality. From rustic taverns to elegant dining rooms, these restaurants offer a taste of the region’s soul. Let this be your roadmap to the flavors that make Mérida one of Spain’s most underrated food capitals.

Dined here for a special family celebration. Lovely restaurant. Food was so tasty and service excellent. Very good value too considering the quality of the dishes.
Falcon Fern★★★★★
Great experiences every time we went. The staff are very helpful about allergens and give honest recommendations. I really appreciate their creativity with their dishes, like the gazpacho de cerezas and the deep fried cauliflower. Spanish cuisine through and through but it feels fresh and unique
Elena Sanchez Alberca★★★★★
The food was spectacular. The steaks were perfect, the foie was so delicate and tasty and the duck was soft and delicious. The carpaccio was a surprise for us because we had never tried it, and we loved it. The desserts were also spectacular, we ordered the house desserts and they were all very good, but specially the cheesecake. It was my mom's birthday and they were so nice to take out the dessert with candles, and even take pictures and videos! It's in the expensive side, but it's quite reasonable for the type of menu. If you have the chance, please go! I hope to go there again soon!
Info Taller de Tapas★★★★★
A really wonderful restaurant, the oxtail stew was to die for as were the excellent cured meats and ham. Excellent service and location too.

I was so excited to eat here because it was recommended and the reviews are so good. Loads of people said how kind and helpful the staff was, however, for me they walked by us multiple times without noticing us. We waved, spoke, and I even got up to ask if we could pay. I’m very disappointed in this encounter. We saw the staff help and wait on everyone else but we were forgotten. After they gave us the check we waited 25 minutes for them to let us pay. It was almost 11pm so we ended up going inside to ask to pay. Then after the guy said gracias and left us with the bill and plate in our hands. We would have ordered more but it seemed as if our presence was bothersome. The croquettes were good but the solomillo lacked flavor. I hope someone reads this to help with a solution. Otherwise you will find others traveling through your town very disappointed.

Great place, highly recommended. We had the puchero del dia which was judiones con chorizo y espinacas. Delicious. The tomato, tuna and onion salad was very nice and refreshing. We finished with the lagarto ibérico which was a recommendation from the waiter. I had never had this cut of meat and it did not disappoint. Excellent recommendation. Service was efficient and friendly. My only warning: as other reviews have said, you do need a reservation. The restaurant is very popular. Not surprising really when you consider how good the experience is. I will definitely return next time I am in Mérida.
M K★★★★★
The restaurant was simple, clean, and homey. The food was good and the servings were generous. We ordered ensalada de zorongollo, cochifrito, solomillo ibérico and a tapa of orejas.
Emily Robinson★★★★★
We found this place inside the city for a spot of tapas dinner. They had decent options for vegetarians and the staff were friendly enough to explain in English. They even went ahead to show pictures of the dishes for us to understand. Toilet facilities were clean and we appreciated their delightful service. Lovely wine recommendations as well. Prices were fair and recommend this place for tapas or food.
jade josephine★★★★★
Alejandro was amazing! Thank you for the tips on what to eat and drink !. The three of us left the place rolling of how full we were. Best food in town ! Thanks again Alejandro !

The food was delicious. The mantilla de cerdo was outstanding. The bacalao dorado was very tasty too, but it was a shame because it came quite cold. Then I was almost overcharged for an item that I did not order. The service could be friendlier too. Must reserve ahead because they turned a lot of people away, even though the restaurant did not seem full.

Tina Handley★★★★☆
A small quiet restaurant overlooking the main square where we enjoyed a couple of allergen free plates, lagarto and churrasco de pollo, both grilled, with chips and fried cherry tomato and padron peppers. Cooked well and tasted delicious. There was only one waitress but she was helpful when I asked about allergens. Not too expensive either for a restaurant.
Stine W★★★★★
We had a wonderful steak tartare and entrecot here. The seating area was cozy and the staff were incredibly kind and hospitable.
Manuel Morell★★★★★
Excellent food! Incredible surroundings in Plaza de Espana, great group of guys serving you. One of the best steak tartar I've had, about as good as the preparation of it table side.
John G★★★★★
Nice restaurant in a busy square. Service was a little slow to start, but once things got going there were no complaints, and it is a nice place to sit and watch. ( the wine came without delay so we were in no hurry anyway) Food was good and prices reasonable for product and area. I would go back.
Littlejar Littlejar★★★★☆
The food was pretty good as well as the service. Staff were very friendly with us. We ate at the terrace, a pity we couldn't try the "Jamon Iberico" because the person who cuts it only is there at the weekends. However, altogether was good.

Susana Borras★★★★★
Great and creative food made with care to details. Great price-value. Service was very helpful, friendly and fast. Atmosphere very good, but a bit noisy at times due to hard surfaces furniture, and cleanness of the floor could have been better. A very positive experience altogether.
Thomas Jeck★★★★★
The food is outstanding! Good choice of different wines, also from the region. Staff was very friendly but eventually they get an additional waiter at a busy evening. Ideally, this person speaks a bit English.
Arnau Rovira★★★★★
I have been in several Michelin guide restaurants and this doesn't feel short with super low budget experience. Absolutely amazing find. My sincere congratulations to the chef
KK L★★★★★
The grilled foie dish with apple date and pear jam was one of the best I've had in a long time (and I've had many over the years). Octopus (medium tender) with pork cheeks (super tender and flavourful). Waiter was extremely knowledgeable about all dishes and recommendations, which is rare and appreciated. Many innovative combinations you won't find elsewhere, and they update the menus periodically. Definitely a foodie's recommendation. We tried Sybarit last night which was alright, but Agallas is another level.
Mariana Câmara★★★★★
Great experience! The meatballs were the best I’ve ever had and the almond and caramel dessert is a must-try. Highly recommended 😊

Great option in Merida. Our guide in the city suggested this restaurant and it was a great experience. We ordered different fish dishes and they were all dellicious. Do not miss the tarta de queso. The waitress was surely in a hurry, so the service was not 5 stars. Great restaurant anyway
Steve Chin★★★★☆
Nice spacious entry way that leads to a courtyard for tapas and a restaurant at the back. The tapas selection was not great, but what it had was really good. No English menu, so we used google translate for the dishes that we couldn't figure out, because the waiter did not speak much English. He was very friendly though. We had two tapas and a drink each, and we had to move on to another place for more tapas.
Rick Fitzgibbon★★★★★
Seriously delicious food and beautiful place. Looking forward to having dinner here again on our next visit to Merida.
Janette Symons★★★★★
Excellent tapas and amazing dessert. We went with the waiter's suggestions, taking things we would generally not choose, and everything was delicious!
Alexander Dimitrov★★★★☆
Overall great restaurant! Entrees were delicious and the main fish dish was gentle and savory. Cozy, old-school atmosphere too.

Our waitress, Atella (Jan 24)was simply fantastic! Jesus at Our hotel recommended the restaurant and it didn’t disappoint. The selection was excellent and when I asked what her favorites were we had to try them… yum! Would highly recommend this restaurant. It was a short walk from the Plaza de Espana and worth the walk. The amazing thing is they served food before 8, so hard to find in Spain

Decidedly average. The tuna tartar salad was dressed in soy sauce which was fine for the raw fish if used sparingly but definitely not so for the salad leaves. The pork tartar was tasty but the plating with the dots of what seemed like siracha sauce was desperately trying to be cool. The best dish we ordered was the Russian prawn salad with fried egg, but the temperature difference between the fried egg and the cold salad was odd. Very limited wine list. We tried two whites and a red. All very forgettable. The service was impersonal with the manager bordering on being rude.
carl marx★★★★★
Great first meal in Merida. Tuna, croquetas , prawns and ravioli in a mushroom sauce. Apart from the ham croquettas the food was outstanding. The ravioli and prawns (lightly battered in a squid ink concoction were absolutely delicious . The fact that they resisted the temptation to add truffle flavouring to the mushrooms was a welcome relief and the taste of the mushrooms stood out. Well worth a visit
Myles Slaughter★★★★★
We arrived too late for lunch service at the Parador de Merida, so we strolled around and found this cool place. Had a casual feel but nicely appointed with an attentive young staff (having a little Spanish or Google Translate will help). It was busy but we were seated immediately. I ordered smoked sardines with onions and olive oil, and my wife had a green salad with tuna and a really great creamy avocado-based dressing. We also ordered a tapas plate of fried pork belly, cut in thick chunks, with thick cut fresh fried potato chips. Super yum! Really nice staff that made us feel welcome.
Somalis Medrano★★★★★
Had an amazing time with my friends. Enjoyed fresh and delicious tapas, wine and beers. Highly recommend for a night out. Can’t show you the dishes since they didn’t last long enough to be photographed lol.

The place itself is not that bad, but we were there at the weekend and they had full restaurant of people. There was only one person who was taking the orders and bringing the food for abnormal quantity of people. Everything took extremely long time. I didn’t find waiter to be pro customer oriented or nice as far as he didn’t know where is his head. Food was tasty and meat dish for two was good. I found some extra fried chicken in potatoes which is very strange and I don’t know if we just received the potatoes from other people who didn’t eat the dish or they found it in fritura and gave it to us…. Everyone was smoking like in factory, which is not the fault of the place, but made the stay not the best for us non smokers. People in Merida are probably the most smoking inhabitants in the whole Spain.

We stopped here for a tapas lunch & had the €30 gastro menu for two people. Wow! It was excellent...the humus was something else with carrot sticks & a poppadom. Tuna was yummy, meat balls delicious & the artichoke 'pigs in blankets ' superb. Then there were the black rice balls, again delicious. All in all one of those little gems you just happen to stumble on when visiting places. Including our drinks the total bill was €35 & worth every penny.

Driving from Madrid to Seville and made this stop at Merida and found this little place called Natural Gastro@rt! Food was fairly good but lack of authentic flavours, service was great and friendly.

If you have Celiac disease, this is the restaurant for you. There is only one dish on the entire menu that is not gluten free. The owner has Celiac disease and the meal for two people is unbelievably delicious!!

Great find and fantastic value for money. I highly recommend the degustation menu for two. Will come back when in Mérida.

What started as an accidental find turned out to be one of the best surprises of our trip to Mérida. Every dish tasted incredible — beautifully presented local cuisine with a creative twist. The ambience was wonderful, and the staff made the experience even more memorable. Special thanks to Tania for catering to our needs and recommending some of their best dishes, and to Jessica for being so kind and attentive. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience.

Definitely the restaurant to visit, food experience at its finest. We ordered the famous “croquetas” and “albondigas” and they were exquisite. Please don’t forget to try the “flan”, this is a specialty from the Chef Samuel. The Crew was amable and kindly pending to all our requests. Price would range 30-40 per person, with the highest value for quality. Thanks a lot, see you soon!

If you like a good steak then this amazing restaurant is the place to go in Merida. Follow up the steak with a good bottle of wine from the vast selection of choice. Finally settle for the amazing brownie which was light soft and gewy all in one spoonful. The staff were friendly and courteous and the ability to select in advance of where to sit is a nice touch. If you want a private dining for two experience book the salon. For larger groups book the terrace or main room.

Service and food was Michelin Star quality. The best food and service we have had anywhere in Europe. Antonio and his staff are the very best.

Good hearty food. The service is great, the server Sergio was spectacular. Came to this place from a friend's recommendation, the food they suggested is no longer in the menu sadly. But the food we ordered was satisfying, especially the meat.

We stopped here during a long road trip based on the many good reviews. The staff was so kind, understanding and friendly. The atmosphere really nice too. The food was okay 😅 - I had higher expectations based on the reviews… portions are VERY generous so you can share all of the dishes for 2 people. We ordered the solomillo al ajillo and the parillada de verduras… the veggies were good (a bit too oily to my taste) and the solomillo had a bit of an off-taste (to us), but it was juicy and and well-grilled. Sorry I really wanted to love the food but it was just ok based on the dishes we ordered. That being said, the service & staff made it worth the stop. Thanks ladies 😇🙏🏽

Stopped here during a road trip while the car was charging. Ate some tapas and drank some beer. The staff is super friendly and the food was good. Will certainly come back when in Merida.

We stopped here during our transfer from Madrid to Seville after our train was cancelled. We weren’t expecting this kind of perfection in such a small place in a small town. Llamame Lola was truly one of the best parts of our journey in Spain. (And a small friendly warning: Mrs. Lola might give you “the look” if you keep ordering the same dish again and again — so make sure you order everything at once… unless you’re brave enough to negotiate 😄)
Sherry Jury★★★★★
Just a lovely, family business where you can get a fantastic dinner. Went there one day for a drink and came back the next day for dinner. Even though our Spanish is limited, the hostess went out of her way to help us translate the menu. Everything we had, from the fresh olives to the feta salad and Iberian pork was delicious and well prepared. This restaurant is definitely one I’d return to

A great place to eat in Mérida. The food is definitely high quality; the baby squid, the chops, the sirloin steak—everything was delicious. The French toast for dessert is highly recommended; it's completely homemade, just like the traditional kind. Fran served us; he was very attentive and friendly throughout. It was a pleasant experience. My only complaint was that, because the bar is right next to the tables, there was a group of rather noisy people at the bar, making it a bit difficult to have a conversation. Definitely a place I recommend. Fran, the waiter, said, "We're the family from Valencia! Cheers and enjoy your meal!"
노지명★★★★★
I had a very delicious meal of migas in Mérida. The jamón from Extremadura, the region where Mérida is located, was also incredibly tasty. The restaurant was very clean and well-maintained, the prices were reasonable, and the service was excellent! The staff were also very friendly. I was a bit worried since Mérida is a relatively small city, but I was treated much better than I expected, and I was very happy to leave. I highly recommend this restaurant to any travelers visiting Mérida!
Isabel Perez Romero★★★★★
We went for dinner and we were so glad we chose this place. The food was delicious; we ordered a portion of Iberian ham, grilled baby squid, and Iberian pork shoulder, and everything was amazing. The desserts were also very good. Fran served us; he was a true professional and very attentive. We'll definitely be back and will recommend it.
Susana Tx★★★★★
We went early for tapas for dinner because we had a tour booked later, so we didn't have dessert, but what we did order was fantastic. The waiter was super attentive and explained some dishes we were unsure about. We ordered some of the recommendations and they were great.

Practical Tips for Dining in Mérida

To make the most of your culinary journey through Mérida, it helps to understand the local dining customs and how to navigate the scene like a pro. The rhythm of the day here is different from many other European cities, and knowing when to eat will significantly enhance your experience. Here are some essential tips to ensure you eat well and avoid common tourist pitfalls.

1. Adapt to Spanish Meal Times
Lunch (comida) is the main meal of the day and is typically served from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Dinner (cena) starts late, usually around 9:00 PM or later. If you arrive at a restaurant at 7:00 PM, you will likely find the kitchen closed. Use the gap between lunch and dinner to enjoy a siesta or explore the Roman ruins during the cooler evening hours before dining.

2. Embrace the "Menú del Día" at Lunch
For the best value, look for restaurants offering a "Menú del Día" (Menu of the Day). This fixed-price menu usually includes a starter, main course, dessert, bread, and a drink. In Mérida, these menus are often incredible bargains, allowing you to sample traditional Extremaduran cooking at a fraction of the à la carte price.

3. Look for Denominación de Origen (D.O.) Products
Extremadura is famous for specific protected products. When ordering, look for "D.O. Dehesa de Extremadura" for Iberian ham, "D.O. Ribera del Guadiana" for local wines, and "D.O. Torta del Casar" for the creamy sheep’s milk cheese. Ordering these ensures you are getting the authentic, high-quality version of these regional treasures.

4. Don’t Skip the Tapas Bars
While sitting down for a full meal is wonderful, the soul of Mérida is often found in its tapas bars. Areas around the Plaza de España and the side streets near the Alcazaba are perfect for bar-hopping. Don’t be afraid to squeeze into a crowded bar, order a caña (small beer) or a glass of wine, and point at what looks good on the counter.

5. Make Reservations on Weekends
Mérida is a popular weekend destination for Spaniards, and the best restaurants fill up quickly, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. If you have your heart set on a specific restaurant from the list above, it is highly recommended to call ahead or book a table online. This is particularly important if you are traveling with a group or want to sit on a terrace with a view of the monuments.

The dining scene in Mérida is a reflection of the city itself: unpretentious, deeply historical, and incredibly welcoming. As you explore the ancient streets, allow your appetite to guide you just as much as your map. The true essence of this city is found in the clinking of glasses in a crowded tapas bar and the sharing of a slow-cooked stew with friends.

Ultimately, eating in Mérida is an exercise in connection—to the land, to the history, and to the people who keep these traditions alive. Whether you are indulging in a plate of jamón ibérico or discovering the unique texture of migas for the first time, you are participating in a story that has been unfolding for millennia. Buen provecho.
