Mérida, the capital of Extremadura, is a city where history is not just preserved in museums but woven into the fabric of daily life. Walking through its streets, you are just as likely to stumble upon a two-thousand-year-old Roman temple as you are a modern tapas bar. This unique blend of the ancient and the contemporary extends to its culinary scene, creating a coffee culture that is both distinctly Spanish and refreshingly modern.
For many visitors, a trip to Mérida begins with the monumental sights, but it is often sustained by the quiet moments spent in a local café. The city has moved beyond the traditional "cafeteria" model to embrace specialty coffee trends, while still holding onto the charm of the classic Spanish breakfast spot. Whether you need a quiet place to work or a sun-drenched terrace to people-watch, the options are increasingly diverse.
Finding a great café here is about more than just a caffeine fix; it is about finding a moment of respite from the Extremaduran sun. The best spots in town understand the importance of atmosphere, pairing their beverages with local pastries or modern brunch options. From hidden patios in the old town to minimalist spaces near the Guadiana River, the geography of coffee in Mérida is varied.
Navigating the local scene can be tricky if you are relying solely on generic travel guides that focus only on the tourist center. While the areas around the Roman Theatre and the National Museum of Roman Art are convenient, venturing slightly off the main drag often yields better quality and lower prices. Locals tend to favor spots that offer a slower pace and a higher standard of roasting.
This guide focuses on the establishments that consistently deliver quality, service, and atmosphere. We have considered the quality of the bean, the skill of the barista, the comfort of the seating, and the overall experience. You will find a mix of long-standing institutions that serve as the city’s living room and newer specialty shops pushing the boundaries of coffee culture.
Whether you are starting your day before visiting the Alcazaba or winding down after a long afternoon of sightseeing, there is a perfect spot for you. We have prioritized locations that offer genuine value and a taste of local life, ensuring you don’t waste your time on subpar espresso. Here are the ten best places to sit down, relax, and enjoy a proper cup in Mérida.

Mérida has many good eating spots and this one was no exception! Aubergine dish was delicious, as was the vegetable moussaka. The beef stroganoff was so tasty - as you can see from the pictures, we forget to take before tucking in! Great beer selection too. Music themed location was novel and our waitress was very friendly and helpful.

Absolutely love Bar Joplin - really friendly, great vibe, brilliant service and delicious Armenian food. It's a fantastic place with personality, to eat and drink with friends.

Found this place by accident. A music themed bar. Nothing else was open. Probably because it was summer and hot. This place was buzzing with locals having breakfast. We had coffees and pan tomato. I had an egg added to mine. Food served super quick. Delicious. Best of all, it was so cheap.

Love this place! The food is tasty, the music is good, the service is nice, the desserts are great and the prices are fair! Beef Stroganoff, musaka, pelmeni, stuffed eggplant are highly recommended!

We had 3 small plates (which weren’t small!)…they were delicious. Enjoyed the kebab, the beef stroganoff and the mushroom crepes. Service was so friendly and patient with our lack of Spanish. Great environment and music. Thoroughly enjoyed…wished we’d discovered this special place earlier in our Mérida stay.

We were looking for somewhere to get a quick bite to eat while sightseeing in Merida and couldn't have asked for a better place! Great food, all locally sourced, made to order! Incredible atmosphere and the owner was just amazing, super friendly and very knowledgeable about the city. This is definitely one place I'd love to visit again!

Great spot off the beaten track, but close to the aqueduct. Owner is a great guy and everything is made on the premises. The burger is top class and one of the best you will ever have.

Incredible tasting food with waiters that give great recommendations on what to have to eat and drink.

I'm not giving it 5 stars because I think there's always room for improvement, but this burger place has a tough act to follow. The service was excellent and the food spectacular. We were a group of 7, and despite it being a small place and packed, they quickly set up tables and seated us. We tried 3 burgers (each one better than the last), a hot dog, chicken fingers, and fries. Everything was delicious. They also have a wide selection of beers.

Service business consulting★☆☆☆☆
Terrible service terrible food. The croissant was just dough with sugar on top and I got the chicken sandwich and it was mostly cream. Honestly, I doubt if I had any chicken at all. Also the person who took the order was super rude acting like I was a total bother to her…. This is the service industry part of what I’m paying for is Service unless she’s just as xenophobic. I would definitely not come back here and I would not recommend anyone to until they either change the quality of their products for the price they’re charging and learn how to work in a service industry.
Tamar Wang★★★★☆
The croissants were exceptionally fresh; I came twice during our three day stay.

The croissant are just raw dough with some cream on it. Not even safe to eat.
They should read some recipes on the Internet to learn how many minutes they should cook the croissants.

Very good food, and pleasant experience. Good specialty coffee. We had the ham & cheese croissant, cream cheese + salmon + scrambled eggs toast, kinder donut, everything was very nice. We asked for some queso fresco and scrambled eggs without salt for our baby - they don't have those items isolated on the menu, only on toast, and they kindly plated everything separately.
With drinks, they serve a small glass of water, very thoughtful. I had the Moka avellana decaf - I found it had a strange flavour, it was okay but I wouldn't order it again.
M.R. Munoz★★★★★
Great place for a solid breakfast or a coffee break. You choose a table number and then proceed to the register to place your order and pay for it. You provide your table number and they bring your order to the table when it is ready. Presentation is lovely— beautiful cups on wooden trays that also include a small glass of water.
I appreciated that they offer oat beverage instead of milk. They also have a few gluten free pastry options including a pretty good croissant.
Casandra★★★☆☆
We arrived during rush hour and there were a lot of tables uncleaned. We sat down and waited 10 minutes for our table to be cleared. I stood at the checkout for another 10 minutes trying to place my order, and the staff didn't speak English. There was practically no tea in the rooibos teapot.
Ian Craddock★★★☆☆
Food and coffee actually very good, but (as others have noted) staff seemed reluctant to take order, make eye contact, smile or speak. Basically, rude. Bit of a shame as the menu and location are great.
Nadia★★★☆☆
Good coffee and friendly service. They have gluten free bread but it is prepackaged so it is limited to certain spreads. You cannot make any tostada gluten free. They also offer some baked goods like muffins gluten free and prepackaged.

This is my absolute go-to restaurant at all different times of the day depending on my week. A beautiful courtyard filled with bougainvillea and thunbergia - a dangling purple flower. There are umbrellas for shade and individualized fans. They have an all day menu including delicious abundant egg and hot cake breakfasts, giant fresh fruit shakes, excellent enchiladas and delicious cappuccinos and other coffee specialties. Their lunch/dinner foods include hamburgers, pizza, pasta and the most delicious shrimp and garlic. Salads are fresh and delicious, food is beautifully presented and staff are friendly and give you plenty of space. At night, the courtyard is filled with Christmas lights and they play soft music. This is where I meet my Spanish teacher for 2 hr classes, grab a panini for lunch and relax in the shade or where I go when my partner and I just want a simple, abundant reasonably priced meal and nice place to spend time. They also have a frontside interior room for large groups, and a pretty craft and specialty store in the front. Can’t speak highly enough of this neighborhood gem.
Mauro Ceschin★★★★★
Whether you want breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner this cafe has you covered. We went for breakfast and loved the delicious food, quick and friendly service so much that we returned for dinner that same day. There is an open air courtyard where you may even see a glimpse of hummingbirds feeding on the flowers.
As I mentioned, the service is very fast and they have buttons at the top of the napkin dispensers on every table that can be used to call for service. The servers actually listen to any special requests you may have and follow through on them.
All of the dishes that we tried were made with fresh, high quality ingredients and the portions were very generous. Their hot and cold chocolate drinks are amazing. The prices for all items are very reasonable and much better value than most restaurants we tried in Merida. (If I lived in Merida, I'd be a regular here!)
Uncle Rocky's nature shorts for kids.★★★☆☆
The plate my wife had was excellent but the meat with mine (pictured in the foreground)was very tough. I guess i ordered the wrong thing!
To be fair I complained a bit late, but no one came to check. I mentioned the meat to the owner and she said she would have replaced it right away. I would go again to give them a second chance so 3 1/2 stars today

The service was excellent and the food was even better. We ordered grilled chicken and chicken Milanese which came three sides. The roasted herb potatoes and black beans were delicious. We also got fresh squeezed orange juice with carbonated waters - very refreshing. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area!

If you're looking for a cozy spot in Mérida, Asanté café is a must-visit.
It stands out for offering one of the best breakfast experiences in the area; their toast is excellent, prepared with fresh ingredients and toasted to perfection.
The service is friendly, fast, and always welcoming. Plus, they have a surefire way to end the week: on Fridays at lunchtime, with every beer, they serve spectacular chickpeas. A perfect combination of quality, tradition, and great service.

Very attentive. The staff were super friendly. Good atmosphere and good food, including the price. You can eat very well for 15 to 20 soles. The only downside was the hamburger bun. And it's best to make a reservation because it gets crowded. Thanks to the staff.

We went to try it out and it was okay, though nothing spectacular.
The food was good, but nothing extraordinary. We ordered the cod in golden sauce and, while it was a generous portion with plenty of cod, it was a tad dry for my taste.
The downside is that we were left wanting to try the cheesecake. Just to scratch that itch, we'll definitely be back!

Essential Tips for Enjoying the Café Scene in Mérida
To truly enjoy the coffee culture in Mérida like a local, there are a few unwritten rules and practical considerations to keep in mind. The rhythm of the day here is different from larger Spanish cities like Madrid or Barcelona, and understanding this will greatly enhance your experience. From timing your visit to knowing what to order, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring you get the best seat and the best brew.
- Respect the Breakfast Window: In Mérida, coffee is traditionally a morning and early afternoon affair. Most locals have their first coffee between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, often accompanied by a "tostada" with tomato and olive oil. If you want to see a café at its most vibrant and authentic, this is the time to go.
- Look for Local Roasters: While international chains are present, the quality is found in shops that either roast their own beans or source from specialty roasters in Extremadura. Asking the barista about the origin of their beans is a great way to find the best flat white or espresso in town.
- Embrace the Terrace Culture: Mérida enjoys a mild climate for much of the year, making outdoor seating highly desirable. However, the best plazas fill up quickly on weekends. If you want a prime spot on a sunny terrace, aim to arrive before noon or during the late afternoon "merienda" time (around 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM).
- Understand the "Sombra" vs. "Sol": When choosing a table on a terrace, consider the position of the sun. In the warmer months (May through September), the heat can be intense. Always look for a table in the shade ("sombra") to make your coffee break comfortable and leisurely.
- Pair Coffee with Local Sweets: While croissants are common, try pairing your espresso with a local Extremaduran pastry. Look for "perrunillas" (lard-based crumbly cookies) or "técula mécula" (an almond tart). This combination offers a true taste of the region that you won’t find in a standard chain café.
The café scene in Mérida is a reflection of the city itself: unpretentious, deeply rooted in tradition, yet open to modern influences. It is a place where you can sip a meticulously brewed specialty coffee while looking at a wall that has stood for centuries. Taking the time to explore these spaces offers a deeper connection to the rhythm of the city than simply ticking off monuments ever could.
As you plan your itinerary, remember that a great travel day includes time to sit still. Use these cafés as your base camps, places to rest your feet, journal your thoughts, or simply observe the daily life of the "Emerita" locals. The perfect cup of coffee in Mérida is waiting for you, often just around the corner from a piece of history.
