Stepping into Cáceres Old Town feels like walking onto a medieval film set, except every stone, archway, and tower is entirely authentic. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, this enclave in Extremadura is widely considered one of the best-preserved historic centers in all of Spain. Unlike other tourist hubs, the night here is quiet, the streets are atmospheric, and the history feels tangible rather than staged.
For travelers, choosing to stay within the ancient walls is about more than just convenience. It means having the Plaza Mayor, the Co-Cathedral of Santa María, and the Casa de los Golfines right on your doorstep after the day-trippers have gone home. You trade the sound of traffic for the echo of your footsteps on cobblestones and the distant chime of church bells.
However, finding a hotel inside a protected heritage zone comes with unique challenges. Many of the buildings are converted palaces, convents, or noble houses, which means rooms can vary significantly in size, layout, and modern amenities. Accessibility can be difficult, and parking is almost always located outside the walls, requiring a short walk.
The best properties here embrace the historical character rather than fighting against it. Expect thick stone walls that keep rooms cool in the scorching Extremaduran summer, vaulted brick ceilings, and interior courtyards filled with the sound of trickling fountains. These are not sterile, chain-style accommodations; they are immersive historical experiences.
Because space is limited and demand is high, the top-rated hotels in the old quarter fill up months in advance, particularly during spring and autumn. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway in a 14th-century palace or a budget-friendly boutique room with a view of the battlements, the range is surprisingly diverse.
This guide focuses exclusively on the lodging options located inside or immediately adjacent to the historic center. We have prioritized properties that balance historical authenticity with modern comfort, ensuring you get a good night’s sleep without sacrificing the magic of the location.
Below, you will find a curated list of the best places to stay, ranging from luxurious paradores to intimate guesthouses. Each option offers a distinct way to experience the unique atmosphere of this Extremaduran treasure.

Palacio de Godoy continues to be one of our favorite places to stay. From the moment you walk in, there’s a feeling of calm and tranquility that’s hard to describe but easy to appreciate. The staff know how to deliver excellent service with perfect balance — attentive but never intrusive.
The hotel blends historic charm with modern comfort beautifully. Our suite was spacious, elegant, and equipped with every convenience.
The team here is exceptional. Antonio deserves special mention — he is the quiet, steady presence who makes everything run smoothly, always nearby if you need anything. And Lara made breakfast a joy each morning with her warm smile and wonderful service.
The breakfast itself is excellent: a well‑presented buffet plus made‑to‑order dishes included from the menu.
The location couldn’t be better: a few steps from Plaza Mayor, yet on a peaceful, tucked‑away street.
This was our second visit, and we’ve already booked again for later this year. Muchísimas gracias y hasta luego.

Stunning hotel that blends the old with the new. The original feel is there while you still get everything you'd want from a Hilton family property.
The rooms are well appointed with amenities and charm. Big TV big bed, plenty of storage and smart toilets.
The rooftop must be seen, its the perfect place to see in the sunset. But more than the hotel itself, the staff are incredible. From before my stay and throughout they have been helpful kind and respectful. So a big thank you to them for all that they do.

I had an absolutely outstanding stay at Palacio de Godoy, truly a five-star experience from start to finish. The hotel perfectly blends historic charm with modern luxury, creating a unique and elegant atmosphere that’s hard to match.
The rooms were spacious, beautifully designed, and impeccably clean, with every detail thoughtfully arranged for comfort. The staff went above and beyond to make me feel welcome, always attentive, friendly, and ready to help with anything I needed.
The location is ideal, making it easy to explore the surrounding area while still enjoying a peaceful and refined environment. The amenities, especially the dining and common areas, were top-notch and added even more to the experience.
I would highly recommend Palacio de Godoy to anyone looking for a luxurious and memorable stay. I can’t wait to return!

Newish hotel, Carlos the concierge, was amazing, so helpful.
Electronic bidet didn't work (1st world problem, I know). Lovely room with patio, nice breakfast (€24).
Motorbike storage at secure parking 4 mins walk away, loading/unloading at front of hotel.

Beautiful hotel in the center of the historic center. A gem. Breakfast was also great. Service and staff were very nice. Modern room and facilities in historic building. The only down side was lack of parking, but there is a public parking nearby for about 16 Euro. We were able to find free street parking next to the hotel.

On our road trip in Spain I booked hotels with Booking.com and was very specific that hotels had to have their own parking. It worked very well until the last sleepover on return to Portugal. We booked NH Collection Hotel in Caceres, Spain that was filtered as a hotel with parking. That was false because the hotel does not have parking and is in the historic centre, which makes movement difficult. In fact, after finding the hotel and unloading luggage one has to drive through the historic city to a public parking and then walk downhill and uphill 350-400 m to the hotel. I am attaching the plan that I received in the hotel after checking-in. We had to do it twice because the first attempt with Google Maps failed. Narrow streets and poor GPS quality made it difficult. The situation was not made easier by a rude staff. Shortly after my arrival to the reception when I was querying the parking, I was told that if I did not like it then they would cancel the booking without problems. The hotel is in an old palace, which means that one has to climb 19 stairs before he or she reaches rooms or lift. There is a service lift that has access to the street level, which was operated by a person who acted as a receptionist as well as a bellboy. There is no doubt that the hotel shamefully misrepresented their facilities at Booking.com.

Spent a number of days between Christmas hotel and new year's eve in 2025. The hotel room was in the attic with only a sky view velex window . The room was quite cold and we had to ask for an external heater to heat the room at night. The hotel had no service for new years eve and EVERYTHING in the hotel closed down. . We tried to get some tapas / snacks at 1500 hours that day but the restaurent was closed .Had to go to a chinese takeaway to get some food to eat in the room which was very disappointing for a 5 star hotel.
The hotel is centrally located beside the old town and is assessible by walking from the train station if need be.
NH hotels are a good brand of hotels but would recommend to anyone reading this to consider NOT booking for new year's eve.

Really nice hotel in an old stone palace. It is very close to the plaza mayor. The staff was very helpful. The bedroom very comfortable and with a big bed full of extra pillows. This hotel stands out as it allows pets adding a 35 euros fee. Pets up to 25 kilos.

I travel fairly widely through Europe, and this hotel offered as good an experience as any. Extremely comfortable bed, good sound-proofing in room, pleasant restaurant with wide choice and friendly staff. Not ideally placed for public transport, but Caceres can be covered pretty well on foot.

Absolutely amazing! Casa Pizarro Hotel in Cáceres is a true gem – stylish, charming, and beautifully designed down to the smallest detail. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive – you feel right at home from the moment you arrive.
The rooms are spotless and beautifully decorated, with a clear focus on quality and comfort. What stood out the most was the outstanding service – whether it was breakfast or special requests, the team went above and beyond every time.
I’ve rarely experienced such a warm and relaxed atmosphere in a hotel. If you’re visiting Cáceres, this place is a must. Highly recommended – I’ll definitely be back!

Beautiful hotel that used to be an aold mansion. Rooms were surprisingly spacious, with a luxurious bathroom. Restaurant was pretty good as well. The hotel is very much in the historic center of town. Parking is about a 5-10mins walk away in a residential building, so it is a bit challenging, particularly if you have luggages and need to drop them off at the hotel, which is surrounded by quite narrow streets. Overall though, would love to stay here again some day.

Nice hotel in the centre of Cáceres. Location is perfect. Close to the contemporary art museum, accessible by car, walking distance to the historical centre.
The hotel is new and nicely decorated. We had a room on the top floor that was quiet and cosy.
Breakfast was good. Reception was helpful and nice.
To my knowledge, there is no gym or other facilities. There is a parking few hundred meters away.
Price was OK. Could be some 20 euros lower or have the breakfast included in the price of the room.
We would recommend to someone passing by Cáceres.

Lisa LaGrow★★☆☆☆
To start, my bed was comfortable and good shower.
However, I would like to see and compare my room 406 to rooms on the lower floors. NO windows, so very dark when I entered. There is one skylight.
I was literally in the "attic" among the rafters of the roof. The beams came down to about 1.3 meters from the floor, including one right outside the shower stall. I did make the mistake of putting my backpack down by the chair and hit my head picking it up. Only did that once, thankfully.
The biggest problem for me was both next door and directly across from me were service/janitor rooms and they were loading their carts early in the morning, waking me up both days.
I don't think this room (perhaps others on the fourth floor?? Not sure) should be used unless the hotel is full and then they should definitely not be same price.
Third photo is all the carts in my hallway, my room is last on the left. Fourth shows my room with the janitor closet across.
UPDATE AFTER HOTEL'S RESPONSE: Really surprised by their reply, they either decided to completely ignore the 2*rating and what I said about this room or clearly didn't understand the translation? Customers shouldn't have to be woken up every morning due to cleaning staff and carts outside their doors, let alone the low ceiling. Even more disappointed by the lack of a proper response.
If they assign you a room on the 4th floor ask for another!!

The location is perfect even if it makes for a confusing arrival by car. The rooms are well appointed but our room was very hot at arrival. In the second day it improved but their ‘modern’ system leaves some customers sweaty!

Very strong air fresheners used all around the hotel including the room, intoxicating. Double bed was tiny, smaller than my regular one at home.
William T Short★★★★☆
Excellent hotel. Best location. Good breakfast. Very helpfull staff and somewhere to keep my bicycle. Air conditioner not cooling as set to hot only by the hotel. Why any hotel thinks they know what a customer finds comfortable is beyond me. Room was uncomfortably hot for me

Probably a new favourite getaway for us.
The family room is just amazing, actually it's a suite. The bedroom is big and the bed is really comfortable. Our kids were happy with the living room and their sofabed.
The bathroom area is delightful! The kids just loved the big shower and the bubble bath and spend more than an hour it it upon arrival.
The balcony area is really comfortable with a great view.
We'll be back!

Such a lovely hotel in a prime location. My fiancé and I came down to Cáceres from the North, where his family is, to explore as we are Game of Thrones fans and take engagement photos. Staff were immediately welcoming, always greeted us with Buenos Dias or Buenos trades etc. I asked for an iron to iron our clothes before our photographs before we arrive and the following day it was there waiting for me. Will definitely return to this hotel when we visit again.

What a delightful quirky hotel. Our hosts were so happy to help & start your day with a good breakfast including delicious cake!our room was on first floor with lovely view, if you are not familiar with your travelling partners bathroom habits you soon will be in this room. Six nights at the Don Carlos Hotel in Cáceres were delightful in every way. Lovely room with balcony and street view, clean, very comfortable bed, quiet. The public spaces are also very nice, with attention to detail to keep an essence of the past, with artwork and furnished spaces to sit. The price is very reasonable for the quality of the hotel. The location is wonderful, with many restaurants, shops, and cafes within a couple of minutes’ walk. It’s maybe a 7-to-10 minute stroll to the Plaza Mayor and the main gate to the World Heritage Monumental City, which is simply amazing. A key bright spot of the many was the staff of the Don Carlos who were friendly, helpful, professional, and accommodating. Their purpose really seemed to be that my stay be as best as possible and that I was happy with the hotel and the services. (I don’t tend to eat an earlier breakfast and didn’t reserve it so cannot comment on that aspect of the hotel’s services.) I booked directly with the hotel and that was easy to do. I would not stay anyplace else when in Cáceres, and it’s such a wonderful city (and province) that I plan to return time and again.

Great location, right in the city center. Just 5 minutes walk from the plaza Mayor and the entrance of the old city. Staff is very friendly. Rooms are good for a 2 star hotel. Clean and sufficient space. A little noise of your neighbor comes with it. Bathroom looked like parts of it (toilet, washstand) where recently renewed. Parking is available (close by, 3 minutes walk) and a the staff will explain how to get there. Close to the hotel are many restaurants, bars, shops etc. If you go there by car...the hotel is situated in an area with restrictions (for cars) but because you're a hotel guest it's allowed to drive up to the hotel.

Exceptional! We stayed in Casares for 3 nights and couldn’t be happier about our room. It was perfectly clean, had everything we needed and quiet at night. We stayed in room 101. The bed, linens, pillows, furniture, bathroom, towels, shower, and well appointed kitchen were all of high quality and it’s decorated nicely, but it was the little things that really made this room exceptional! The extremely clean kitchen came with salt and pepper, oil and vinegar, napkins, coffee, tea and sugar. The bathroom had a washcloth! There was even a box of tissues! If you needed an iron, there were 3 available in a room downstairs, with ironing boards. In the common area was a vending machine with all kinds of items like coffee pods, bandaids, deodorant, in addition to snacks and water. The owner has really thought of everything. This was a perfect 10 room.
My husband and I have been traveling Spain for 6 weeks and have stayed in many accommodations but Plaza Mayor 35 was the best!

Everything is absolutely great about this place. Location in the heart of the old city, lots of restaurants and stores just underneath the building. You can choose the type of room you want, for couples, friends, family etc..the inside of the house is SO beautiful and well decorated, you can see the thinking of the small details. Even though it's in the center the windows are designed to block the noise and light. The owner is lovely. I highly recommend this place!

David and Emanuelle's apartments are simply stunning. Located in the center of Caceres, they create an immediate sense of welcome. The interior design shows excellent taste, and every amenity you could want is provided.
We spent 5 days in the studio apartment, which features a spacious views overlooking the Plaza Mayor. The bed is generous and exceptionally comfortable, with various pillow options available. The smart TV allowed us to stream our shows. The WiFi is fast.
The entire staff is wonderfully welcoming, and the apartments are immaculately maintained.
If you are looking for an accommodation in Cáceres, look no further—this place will exceed your expectations.

Having paid €49 for the Family Studio relatively last minute for a Sunday to Monday stay in May, I can only grant it five stars. Price quality cannot be beat. Central location, shutters to block out the light, check-in available already at 14:00, one AC that worked well and one that worked a bit, comfortable beds, a good shower and a Dole Gusto coffee machine - what more can you ask for? A 3 min walk from the largest parking garage in the city and a 4 min walk from the bus stop where you can catch a bus to the train and bus station.
Note that my photos were taken with a wide angle - it’s spacious enough for two, but not as large as my pics might make it seem out to be.

This does not feel like a hostel. It has all the trappings of a very comfortable hotel. We had a spacious room with private bath, air conditioning, and TV. Our hosts were very gracious and accommodating. It's an easy five-minute walk to the marvelous old, walled-city of Caseres and we were able to find nearby street parking for free! A traditional Spanish breakfast of cafe con leche and pan y mantiquilla was available in the cute tea-room on premises for only two Euros. This is a delightful place to relax and enjoy a wonderful encounter with history. We had not heard of Caseres before but we plan to return in part because of our experience at this hostal. Oh, and our Wi-Fi was fully functioning from our second floor room. This gets five-stars in our book.
Maria Barragán★★★★★
Let's be clear, it's a hostel, but a wonderful one. The rooms are spotless, with a fully equipped bathroom. For me, tired from our trip, the mattresses felt like a cloud—such a restful sleep! I loved them. And as I mentioned, the bathroom had everything I needed. We were given a room on the second floor, and I don't remember if there was an elevator. I don't usually use them, but for anyone who needs one, I didn't see it; maybe I was just tired. Check-in was super easy despite the early hour (1:00 AM), thanks to the staff member who explained the steps very clearly. Finally, the location is good, but parking was a little tricky for us. It's on the street, and everything was packed, so we drove around a lot. That was the only downside, but we were right to choose it. Highly, highly recommended, and the price is unbeatable. Thank you for everything.

We stayed here one night, and everything was magnificent. From the phone call to make the reservation, to check-out, everything was perfect.
They were very kind and gave us information about what to do, see, visit, and places to eat.
The room was very large, clean, and well-maintained.
The location is perfect, with free parking nearby.
A splendid place to stay.
Thank you very much.

I live in the Netherlands and I stayed here for 1 night. The room/apartment was fabulous and clean. Unfortunately I had lost my wedding ring somewhere in the apartment. I had already left the country when I noticed that I had lost it.
Now… A YEAR later I was close by again and thought I would take my chances. I went to the hotel and they had found and saved my ring all that time!! They just weren’t sure whose ring it was since they found it 10 days after my stay (probably in the filter of the washing machine). Thank you again for the great service!!!

A lovely old building but quite neglected and rooms not feeling cared for. Breakfast was worst ever. Very highly processed packet of cakes and
chocolate items . Only fruit was mushy . Coffee and hot water machine out of use and we had to get a lady to fix it as no staff around. Someone did but then a queue . Id definitely skip breakfast but then wouldn't stay here again. Beds very comfortable. Just needs lots of TLC .
Great to be dog friendly and no extra cost. For that we very appreciative

This is a quirky hotel which was once a traditional Spanish townhouse and is above shops and accessed by foot in the middle of this UNESCO medieval town. There are salons, samples of lace, Spanish artefacts and an amazing granite staircase. Parking is in a public multi storey car park. The main square and walls of the old town were visible from our room and doing either an evening or daytime guided tour is a must. There are plenty of food shops and eateries all around and the hotel reception is manned 24 hours.

Shabby chic. Beautiful interior with fantastic antiques, but totally unpretentious. Breakfast room adequate unreconstructed 70's feel, note the wonderful doll's house. Right on the central plaza so could be quite noisy in the summer or Sat night, like most Spanish towns and cities?
Tips for Choosing the Perfect Hotel in Cáceres Old Town
Selecting the right accommodation in a UNESCO World Heritage site requires a slightly different approach than booking a standard city hotel. The physical constraints of the medieval architecture and the local logistics can impact your stay significantly. To ensure your visit is as comfortable as it is memorable, consider the following practical advice before confirming your reservation.
Plan your arrival and luggage strategy carefully. Private vehicles are heavily restricted within the old walls. Most hotels will provide instructions for dropping off luggage at a designated access point before you park your car in a public lot outside the center. Pack light, as you may need to wheel your suitcase over cobblestones for several minutes.
Prioritize courtyard rooms for quiet, but street rooms for views. Rooms facing the narrow internal streets often offer stunning views of towers and steeples but can be noisy late at night when revelers leave the nearby tapas bars. Rooms facing an interior patio are typically silent but may lack natural light. Decide what matters more to you: atmosphere or absolute tranquility.
Check for elevator access and mobility constraints. Many historic buildings have been renovated to include modern elevators, but some smaller guesthouses and upper floors of palaces are only accessible by steep, winding stone staircases. If you have mobility issues or heavy luggage, confirm accessibility features directly with the property before booking.
Book a hotel with on-site dining or verify nearby hours. While the Plaza Mayor is bustling, the streets inside the walls can become very quiet after dark. Having a hotel with a good restaurant or a 24-hour front desk that can arrange late-night snacks is a major advantage, especially if you plan to spend your evenings exploring rather than commuting.
Embrace the seasonal temperature swings. The thick stone walls of these historic buildings are excellent insulators, but many do not have centralized climate control like modern hotels. If visiting in the peak of summer (July/August) or the depths of winter, confirm that your specific room has adequate air conditioning or heating, as some ground-floor rooms can feel damp or cool year-round.
Staying overnight in Cáceres Old Town offers a rare opportunity to experience the quiet majesty of a medieval city long after the sun sets and the tour buses have departed. By choosing the right base, you can wander the illuminated plazas at midnight, enjoy a quiet breakfast in a Renaissance courtyard, and feel like a temporary resident of history rather than just a visitor passing through. It is an experience that transforms a simple sightseeing trip into a true immersion in the soul of Extremadura.
