12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Tours

Tours may sit in the heart of the Loire Valley, but its culinary identity stretches far beyond the region’s famous châteaux and vineyards. While the city is renowned for its traditional French bistros, rillettes, and goat cheeses, a quiet gastronomic revolution has been simmering in its medieval streets. Over the last decade, a vibrant and authentic Japanese dining scene has emerged, offering locals and visitors a taste of Japan without leaving the Indre-et-Loire.

For the uninitiated, navigating this growing landscape of ramen bars, sushi counters, and izakayas can be overwhelming. You might be looking for a quick bowl of noodles during a lunch break, or perhaps you are planning a celebratory omakase dinner. The difference between a mediocre tourist trap and a truly memorable meal often comes down to knowing where the locals go for fresh fish and perfectly seasoned rice.

This guide is designed to cut through the noise and highlight the culinary gems that consistently deliver on quality, authenticity, and atmosphere. We have analyzed menus, considered the sourcing of ingredients, and taken into account the nuances of Japanese hospitality to bring you a curated selection. Whether you are a student looking for value or a connoisseur seeking the finest toro, there is a spot in Tours for you.

The city’s proximity to major transport hubs has allowed restaurateurs to source high-quality ingredients, while the local appreciation for artisan craftsmanship aligns perfectly with Japanese culinary philosophy. From the meticulous preparation of sushi to the slow-simmered broths of Tonkotsu ramen, the standards here are remarkably high for a city of this size.

In this list, we explore establishments that range from cozy, hidden izakayas to sleek, modern dining rooms. Each one offers a distinct experience, but all share a commitment to honoring the essence of Japanese cuisine. Prepare your palate for a journey through umami, texture, and tradition.

Below, you will find the definitive guide to the best Japanese dining experiences Tours has to offer right now.

This is one of my most favorite spots in Tours. Everything is authentic. The rice is perfectly cooked also specially flown in from Japan. The owners are super cool and super welcoming.
Ruby Franklin★★★★★
Delicious, on par with the best I had in Japan. Great service, quick.
Ellie Shmulevich★★★★★
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely loved this place! The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and made the whole evening feel like a treat. The atmosphere was just as lovely—welcoming, cosy, and somewhere you actually want to sit and enjoy yourself. But our waiter deserves a special mention! He was so friendly, attentive, and genuinely lovely, and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. His service really made the experience stand out—you can tell when someone cares about their guests, and he absolutely did. Amazing food, a beautiful atmosphere, and exceptional service. Couldn’t recommend it more highly, and would happily come back! ✨
Sila★★★★★
It's a charming spot for a quick lunch, with a nice atmosphere. Apparently, they have a different menu on Mondays. The decor is really nice, and the owner and staff are very welcoming. We came back for the onigiri and taiyaki. The chestnut cream taiyaki was a pleasant surprise. A great spot for a simple and tasty meal.
Justine Bret★★★★★
Absolutely fantastic! I had a bonito onigiri and an egg onigiri, and they were really delicious! The service was great, the ladies were smiling and friendly! I'll definitely be back!

I had searched up highly rated (4.5+) restaurants using Google and found this place on a Sunday. After a museum visit and a walk along the Loire River we walked to this place a little after noon, when it opens and luckily was able to score counter seating (as we didn’t make a reservation) and there are only 5 seats and 2 were already taken. There were 3 appetizers on offer and 2 set menus (cute 2-story bento box お弁当、fish-of-the-moment chirashi sushiちらし寿司). I loved the beautiful ceramic dishes stacked at the counter (feast for the eyes). Pros: a-sincere and warm omotenashi service, b-perfect seasoning (not too salty) of miso soup and sushi rice; c-portion size was just right (e.g., hara hachi bu) leaving me sated but not stuffed. Could be better: a- the cooked fish side dish was dry/tough; b-tiny tuna cubes in the chirashi were difficult to eat; c-it is a bit pricey. We were happy to find this restaurant as a sort of palate cleanser between eating traditional French bistro fare.

Fantastic quality Japanese food. Only open one day a week for dinner and it's a must visit if you get the chance. Lovely service and atmosphere. We had a great Riesling from Alsace which complemented the food exceptionally. Would definitely return.
mme SPC (Dolly)★★★★★
The food was very good and the recommended sake was also very good. Had a great night!
Mike Ma★★★★★
Amazing service! While the food itself is with common taste, it is perhaps the best you can find in a small French town like Tours.
Rares Rusu★★★☆☆
Good Japanese restaurant, everything fresh as expected. Portions are small so not amazing value for money. Limited options for lunch (extended menu only available for dinner). This rating is for the lunch menu.

Very laid back atmosphere, ideal if you want to relax while enjoying your meal! The foods great and served by a cute cat robot! Would totally recommend!

It is one of my favorite restaurants in Tours Nord. It is clean, delicious, fast and cheap. Staff is friendly. The robots bring your food, it is pretty enjoyable, especially for kids. I recommend the restaurant! 👌

I love this place by far my favourite in the Gold Coast! However it’s a shame that the owner with glasses is rude and arrogant, he ignored us many times even though me and my partners are regulars! All the rest of the staff are lovely I think he’s just stressed or something😖 very weird! Our waiter harry is absolutely brilliant always puts a smile on mine and my husbands faces! Would recommend!!

The food was GREAT. And the service was even better. Charline was incredibly kind and professional, and she really made our evening. And to the waitress who didn’t speak English very well and apologized for it: honestly, we didn’t mind at all — we thought it was cute! 🙂 Thank you for a wonderful evening.

A wonderful evening at KŌBŌ. Japanese cuisine made with the finest local ingredients; everything was excellent, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The dining room was beautifully decorated and the atmosphere very calm, with impeccable service. A restaurant you absolutely must try, but be sure to book in advance.

Had a train to catch, so chose this Japanese restaurant next to the train station and ordered two set meals. The set menu options are very similar to another Fuji Sushi but generally Fuji Sushi tastes better. Ordered skewers, California rolls, salmon rolls, etc., and they tasted not bad. The location is really good, right next to the train station. The restaurant decorated nice , quiet and comfy.
Felix Thoen★★★★★
Excellent sushi. A bit too much rice. But overall excellent quality. The staff is really helpfull and friendly. Also the prices compared to Belgium are much better
Cassie K★★☆☆☆
Booked a table after reading the reviews but was really disappointed. The ramen burger has no flavour, the chicken skewers tasted okay but inside the chicken meat was still raw. Sushi too much rice and no flavour at all. Couldn't even finish my plate cause nothing tasted good. Wasted money and very disappointed cause the other reviews made me think this would be a great dinner.
Indy Barnes★★★★☆
Well priced tasty food. Fast service, clean . Would go again. Yakitori was tender and hot and came with rice, coleslaw and miso soup.
Busaba Chantra★★★★★
The food is delicious and good service. And price is fair for an original Japanese taste.

Disappointed. I went there for dinner. Ordered Ramen but nothing like other customers shared photos. Nor as show in the restaurant window. Came with a small portion and it's not Ramen. The soup should be broth not miso. Miso soup is cheaper than proper broth. The Ramen was salty, even a bit bitter.
Doriane Umuhoza★★★★★
Small Japanese restaurant, comfortable jazzy ambiance with interesting decor, spacious feel per table even though the the interior is not large. Very friendly staff, quick service, deliciously fresh food. We were very happy.
Alya B.★★★★★
The fish is of superior quality, totally different from what you buy in cheap sushi shops. They served the food fast, were nice to us and gave us a little extra entree for free. Plus, the chef is working right in front of you if you sit at the counter.
Gavrila Amadea★★★★★
Japanese restaurant cooked by a Japanese chef. I love the fresh salmon! The set for lunch cost about 15 euro exclude the drink. I really love the green tea, brewed with fresh green tea leaves and its smell really good!
Garrett Schlake★★★★★
Best Japanese restaurant in town! Been there twice already and cannot wait to go back. The staff is welcoming and the food is amazing! After living in Japan for a while I didn't think I would eat anything like it again, but this place is authentic as you can get! They strive for freshness with their fish and it's evident in the taste. Read any of their responses to other reviews and you can tell they care heavily about what they do. Glad to find it, and I encourage you all to give it a try!

Great little Ramen restaurant in a real residential part of Tours. They have a very small menu and offer 4x ramen options. The ramen is good, just not that authentic. They added sushi ginger into it, which was a first for me. The service was really fast and friendly.
Lily Lee★★★★☆
The beignet de poulet was delicious! Best chicken karaage I've had. The ramen and katsu-don were good and filling, but the service could be improved as it took a long time to get our order in after being seated. I think they focus more on pickup/delivery as there was a constant flow of orders out the door.
Andrey Sokirkin★★★★★
One of the best Ramen I have ever had!
Iqra Kashif★★★★☆
The food was really nice and the serving was quite generous. I ordered the vegetarian ramen and the taste was on point.

So tasty sushi 🍣 one can really taste that it is high quality and freshly made. I'll come back!
Cheryl Nekos★★★☆☆
The food is just OK, I usually do take away. It’s a cute little restaurant, it’s mostly busy at lunchtime. Their presentation is very sloppy. Not a lot of creativity in the offerings. The staff seem extremely busy with their takeaway orders.
Ice Lo★★★★☆
Ordered two set meals, each costing ~ €17. The set meal includes miso soup, salad and a bowl of rice, all three of which are average. However, the sashimi is fresh, and the California rolls, salmon rolls, dumplings and skewers are all delicious. We came here around 7 to 8 pm, many locals bought takeaways here. This is really a popular restaurant.
Damien★★★★☆
While visiting Tours we found this nice little sushi restaurant. The food was good but the reception was not as great. We booked it online after we had parked up in the area and arrived at the restaurant 10min later. We were told something along the line of "next time it would be better if you could book a bit more in advance". I thought it was an odd way to great customers. After that the service was fine.
Nicolas PELLETIER★★★★★
One of the best sushis and sashimis I had the pleasure to eat in France …. From someone who travels to Asia and Japan on a regular basis.

From the time that I entered to the time I brought my takeaway home, the service was enjoyable. The female service assisted with great dish recommendations. The Katsu Yakisoba dish is an ideal dish for a ramen lover like myself. The combination of the well seasoned chicken, red cabbage and noodles is delicious. Add crispy onions and a dash of hot sauce to elevate your senses. A must repeat for an inexpensive but quality service and food.

Outstanding lunch option! Everything was fresh and tasty. The service very effective. I paid 22€ for the “midi gourmand” and “thé de fleur” pictured below. There are less extravagant lunches available at 15-18€. Recommended.

Probably one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten! Delicately-flavoured miso soup, delicious cabbage salad and the freshest, tastiest sushi ever. The flower tea was beautiful as well as refreshing.
Meli Yil★★★★☆
One of the best sushi I had in France. The place is very nice, the fish is fresh, the sushis are simple but very tasty. Minus 1 star for the (very) long wait despite our reservation, and the size of sushis. It's ok to serve them small but given this we felt like it was a bit overpriced.
Jean Sodré★★★★★
One of the best Maki we had! The vegan menu is perfect ( quantity and taste and price 12 euros). The lady working there was really pleasant, she was attentif and managed a lot of people all alone, good skills! Definitely recommend

Essential Tips for Choosing a Japanese Restaurant in Tours

To make the most of your culinary adventure in the Loire Valley, it helps to know how to distinguish a truly authentic experience from a generic one. While the restaurants listed above are all excellent choices, understanding the nuances of Japanese dining in France will enhance your appreciation and ensure you order like a pro. Here are a few strategic considerations to keep in mind before you book a table or walk through the door.

1. Look for the Lunchtime "Menu"

French dining culture has heavily influenced Japanese restaurants in Tours, often for the better. Many of the top-tier sushi and ramen spots offer a "menu du midi" (lunch set) that is significantly more affordable than their dinner service. This is the perfect way to sample high-quality fish or broths without stretching your budget, allowing you to enjoy a bento box or chirashi bowl for a fraction of the evening price.

2. Prioritize Sourcing and Seasonality

The best chefs in Tours will adjust their fish selection based on what is available at the French markets, rather than relying solely on frozen staples like salmon and tuna. Don’t be afraid to ask what the "catch of the day" is or look for specials written on a chalkboard. A restaurant that features seasonal items like sardines, mackerel, or local river fish prepared in a Japanese style demonstrates a higher level of culinary expertise and care.

3. Don’t Skip the Ramen Broths

While sushi often gets the spotlight, the ramen scene in Tours has matured significantly. If you are visiting during the cooler months, a rich, slow-cooked Tonkotsu or a miso broth is the ultimate comfort food. Pay attention to the texture of the noodles and the richness of the egg yolk; these details separate a packet-based broth from a true labor of love that has simmered for hours.

4. Explore the Izakaya Culture

For a more social and varied experience, seek out restaurants that offer small plates, or "tapas" style dining. This is the Japanese equivalent of the French aperitif culture. Ordering a selection of gyoza, yakitori, and karaage alongside a cold beer or sake allows you to experience a wider range of flavors and textures than a single main course would provide.

5. Reserve Ahead for Dinner

Tours is a bustling university town with a strong local dining culture, and the best Japanese spots are often quite small and intimate. While walk-ins might work for a late lunch, securing a table for dinner, especially on weekends, is highly recommended. This ensures you won’t have to settle for a lesser option when the craving for fresh sushi strikes.

The evolution of Japanese cuisine in Tours is a testament to the city’s open-minded palate and respect for culinary tradition. It is a beautiful synergy: the precision of French technique meeting the soulfulness of Japanese cooking. Whether you are seated at a counter watching a chef slice sashimi or tucked into a booth slurping noodles, these restaurants offer a transportive experience that goes far beyond simple sustenance.

As you wander the cobblestone lanes of the old town, let your senses guide you toward the scent of toasted sesame and soy. The dining landscape here is dynamic, with chefs constantly refining their craft. By choosing any of the establishments listed above, you are guaranteed a meal that respects the ingredients and honors the rich tapestry of Japanese gastronomy.
