12 Best Hotels Near the Roman Theatre in Cartagena

Finding the right place to stay in Cartagena can completely transform your trip. This historic Spanish port city is compact, walkable, and brimming with ancient ruins that date back to the Roman Empire. Staying near the Roman Theatre places you at the very heart of the action, where 2,000-year-old history meets modern Mediterranean dining.

The Roman Theatre (Teatro Romano) is arguably the crown jewel of Cartagena’s archaeological scene. Discovered by accident in 1988, this remarkably preserved structure sits at the base of the Concepción Castle hill. It acts as a central anchor point for tourists looking to explore the Old Town, the marina, and the tapas bars of Calle Mayor.

Choosing accommodation in this specific district means you can trade long walks or taxi rides for a simple stroll out of your lobby door. You will be steps away from the main museum entrance designed by Rafael Moneo, as well as the vibrant Plaza del Ayuntamiento. It is the most convenient base for history lovers and first-time visitors.

However, the area surrounding the theatre is not a one-size-fits-all zone. Some streets are pedestrian-only and quiet, while others buzz with nightlife and restaurant chatter until late. Understanding the nuances of each street and hotel style is essential to matching your stay with your travel expectations.

In this guide, we have analyzed the top accommodations based on proximity, comfort, guest reviews, and unique character. Whether you are looking for a luxurious boutique stay, a budget-friendly room with a view, or a family-sized suite, there is an option for you. These selections prioritize quality and location to ensure you maximize your time in this ancient city.

Below, you will find a curated list of the best places to stay within walking distance of the Roman Theatre. We have considered factors like soundproofing, historic architecture, and modern amenities to give you a well-rounded view. Each property offers a distinct way to experience the magic of Cartagena.

The location was excellent, within a short walk of the majority of city attractions. There were many bars and restaurants nearby, offering a large variety of experiences. The apartment was spacious, adequately fitted and furnished but a bit dark. I was apprehensive about check in and access to the apartment but it was easier than I thought - the day before or of arrival you are emailed a code which gives access to the front door of the building for the duration of your stay, this same code grants you access to your individual apartment - quite straightforward. Any maintenance requirements I had were dealt with immediately and efficiently. I would stay there again.
Mike Thompson★★☆☆☆
We stayed here for 3 nights. It took a while to get the code off them to get in which was annoying and then it got worse. The bathroom light switch fell off the wall, the window shutters at the front are old and not working, no plugs in any of the sinks, no corkscrew, no can opener, no hangers in the wardrobes, hair dryer in the bathroom is an electrical hazard. It’s tired inside and yes the remote controls for TV etc the batteries were flat. Great location though. We complained when we there and they said it would all be fixed. Of course it wasn’t. I don’t like to leave bad reviews, the location is great and that’s it, one to avoid and I don’t say that lightly.

Just off the plaza San Francisco which offers great bars and eateries.
Carol Kitchingman★★★★★
I've stayed in these apartments a couple of times and loved it. Centrally located with secure, private parking (10€ a night in 2022), it made a great base for sightseeing and foodie delights. With aircon, free WiFi, decent kitchen, comfy beds and a decent lounge area they're perfect for any family or couple. Lifts to both parking and apartments make them more accessible than many places.
Christopher Semenuk★★★★★
Great place in an ideal location in the city centre. Easy to get to and central to many items (easily walking distance). There is unattached parking for a small fee, owners and operators were very friendly and while we only stayed one night, we had everything we needed in the space. Would stay again on a return to the city; clean, spacious, well laid out and great area.

Fantastic location. The hotel sits on the edge of the historic Old Town. We have spent 7 weeks travelling through Spain and in my opinion this hotel has some of the best staff we have met. Reception staff were exceptional from arrival to departure. Breakfast staff were pleasant and welcoming. The hotel also as a car park whchs is a nice bonus.

Really wonderful hotel with fantastic balconies and very cosy rooms. The waitress even brought my mum a dessert with a candle in at breakfast on the morning of her birthday without us asking. Location and view is excellent.

I was in Cartagena alone for the Rock Imperium festival and many other guests were clearly there for that too. Location is perfect at the NW corner of the old town. Room 208 was big, with walk-in shower, bidet, empty fridge, aircon, safe and vast storage area. You key in a PIN rather than using a card to enter the room, so nothing to carry. The road outside was very quiet although there was some noise from adjoining rooms. The free chilled water and full range of hot drinks 24/7 were much appreciated. There's a fridge in reception too with soft drinks, beer etc that are not dear. Reception is open 24/7 and staff are great. Breakfast was identical every day. Nothing hot except a toasting oven. There was a tortilla española and the ingredients to assemble a pan de tomate. I'm hoping to be back for next year's festival and will certainly book the ByB again.
Alexis Quiroz Peña★★★★★
Great hotel and staff. It was clean, well-located and our room was cleaned daily. The room was also larger than average compared to other hotels. We took advantage of the late check-out until 3:00 PM; the fee is very reasonable and totally worth it.
Cara M★☆☆☆☆
DO NOT STAY HERE. Our first room was stuck at 25°C. The temperature in this hotel is globally locked and can't be customized in the room, despite there being a thermostat inside the room. The front desk at first insisted that 25°C was an acceptable temperature, until we complained. Then they admitted it's too high. We wanted to depart at that moment, but they refused to issue a refund, despite us just having checked in. They said they could only change us to a different room. The moment we walked into the new room, while only a little cooler, there was a live cockroach in the middle of the room. I killed it, but in the video you can still see it's moving. Disgusting place with unsympathetic and condescending staff. I've stayed in hotels all over Spain and have lived here and am fluent in Spanish. Never have I seen cockroaches in my hotel room. Location is good, but not worth staying here.

I had a wonderful experience at the BB Hotel in Cartagena. I can honestly say I rate the whole hotel very positively. The staff at the reception were really amazing very kind, helpful and professional. I especially want to highlight how friendly and welcoming they were. They helped us a lot with parking, and since we were traveling with a bigger car, they called around and arranged everything so we could park comfortably without any stress. The hotel also has a great location. We were there mainly because of the racetrack in Cartagena (Circuito de Cartagena), which is only about 10 minutes away by car. At the same time, the hotel is very close to the city center and you can easily get there on foot. The hotel was very clean and you could see that they really take good care of the rooms. Our room was cleaned beautifully every day it always felt like coming back to a brand new room. Everything was well maintained and very pleasant. I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Cartagena. We would love to come back again on our next visit!

The check in was excellent. The appartment is spacious and well equipped. Location is perfect. My issues were the following: it is a small double bed, not a queen size and the pillows are small. The appartment could be cleaner. Then we contacted them to say there was no laundry soap, they replied saying they left a bottle and told me where. I checked again and no laundry soap to be found which I told them. That was the last I heard from them. No response. The place has potential but there are issues to work out.

Dear Host, Thank you for allowing us to stay in your apartment. While we appreciated certain aspects of our stay, there are some concerns we’d like to bring to your attention: 1. Cleanliness: The shower area had visible mold, which was concerning and detracted from our comfort. 2. Mattresses: The beds were uncomfortable, with mattresses that seemed worn out, leading to restless nights. 3. Plumbing Ventilation: Each time we flushed the toilet, unpleasant odors permeated the apartment, suggesting a possible issue with the bathroom plumbing ventilation. We hope these observations help improve the experience for future guests.

Awesome experience. The staff were very friendly and helped us find a parking spot nearby (10 € per night in a garage). They also spoke good English (very welcome for us who don't speak Spanish). The room was located in the very heart of Cartagena, so it was very easy to walk everywhere (but in a small alley, so it was quiet at night). The room was clean and had everything necessary including a refridgerator. WiFi was working nicely. Great value for the money, definitely recommend to anyone traveling to Cartagena.

We stayed here while our boat was serviced in the shipyard. Due to weather induced delays we had to extend our stay several times. Easy communication with the staff via WhatsApp. Rooms are clean, spacious and at a reasonable price. You pay extra for your pet which is only fair, and we brought our cat.

Very well constructed apartments an easy walk to the city center. We had a comfortable stay and would book here again in the future

A little out of town but not much a little ways from the station. Room is very nice. Well equipped.

A magnificent place. Lots of amenities, everything works (e.g. big fridge, warm comfortable shower, nice TV, great balcony) and they have a gym which is accessible at all times. Had a little trouble with online inchecking, but nothing that the ready staff could solve expediently. Good chance I will come again.

🙂 Very nice location- everything is close, train and bus stations are about 15 minutes away. There are plenty of "touristic" places to eat right next to the apartments, or more local spots few minutes away. For those who are saying it was too loud- it is in the city center, you shouldn`t expect deadly silence 😄 There was a small missunderstanding with entry code, but it was solved with one call. Loved that you don`t need a key or card to get in. AC worked perfect, which was great after some bad experience in other places. 😶 There are pictures and info in the apartment about terrace, but turned out it is private. It really should be updated... Sofa-bed was impossible to open, so one of us had to sleep on sofa as it is. No additional sheets, no proper cover for a blanket. Small details, that are easy to fix and would feel much better for clients 😉
Elena Groot★★☆☆☆
The hotel is located in the city center. On one side, the windows overlook bars, and on the other, trash bins that were being emptied at night, preventing us from sleeping. Don't believe the view from the balcony! There are trash bins and a dilapidated building there. Getting into the apartment was difficult because the staff didn't answer the phone and only gave me the code after I said I'd call Booking.com. However, they kindly added an extra hour for us in the morning.
Johanna Collins★★★★★
Spotlessly clean, bed very comfortable, air conditioning in every room, right in the centre of Cartagena, would definitely stay again

A word of warning: if you're planning to stay in these apartments, there are several things to keep in mind. First, it's very noisy, and the windows offer no sound insulation. Second, check as soon as you arrive that there are sheets, duvets, and pillows for everyone. We didn't have any; they forgot them. And above all, make sure the hot water heater is on. In our case, they hadn't set it up, and we had to shower with cold water, including my 10-year-old daughter. And to top it all off, those shameless people didn't take responsibility for any of these mistakes. They are incredibly unprofessional. It's easy to list tourist apartments for €185 a night, but it's not so easy to manage them properly. I will NEVER return.

Probably the best hotel in Cartagena! Great location, right in the old town. It was really quiet and we couldn’t hear anything while inside the room. They provide a paid parking, which was convenient and cheaper than public parking in the area. Room was spacious, comfortable and clean. Breakfast was great, but the room can get crowded during weekend. There was plenty of food and we could order eggs to the server. Staff were great during our stay: always polite and kind. They have a well equipped gym. I highly recommend staying here when visiting Cartagena.

Excellent hotel in a perfect location. Modern, stylish and very comfortable, with outstanding service from the staff. The only downside is the parking garage. It is extremely tight and can be a real challenge, especially for inexperienced drivers. Apart from that, everything was excellent. I would definitely stay here again.
Richard Phillips★★★★★
This is a really good hotel. Very well located for the historic centre and the port. Parking on site by way of an underground car park via a car lift. Very comfortable rooms and although we did not eat there ourselves, the menu looked more than adequate and the standard of food looked good. Well stocked bar with a comfortable seating area. Helpful, friendly staff at every point of contact. Would certainly recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Absolute Gem in Cartagena – Spectacular Views & Unbeatable Service! Our stay at the AC Hotel Cartagena was nothing short of perfection. We booked the **Superior King Room with Terrace and Sea Views**, and it exceeded every expectation. The views from the private terrace were absolutely outstanding—we spent hours watching the sea, the impressive cruise ships gliding into the port, and the beautiful city of Cartagena itself. From the moment we arrived, the service was top-tier. **Diana at the Front Office** provided exceptional, superior guest service. She was incredibly welcoming, professional, and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was seamless and memorable. The hotel’s location is unbeatable. It is within easy walking distance of almost everything you'd want to see, including: * **History & Culture:** The Roman Theatre, Historical Military Museum, Naval Museum, and the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQVA), and much more. * **Shopping & Dining:** Steps away from premium brand stores, fantastic local restaurants, and vibrant live music spots. If you are visiting Cartagena, do yourself a favor: book a terrace room here and experience the incredible hospitality. We cannot wait to return! Highly Recommended!

Let’s start with the room; clean, modern, great view of the harbor. The staff were welcoming and attentive. The breakfast is worth it, solid omelets and great options. Parking was tight, but to be expected. The bar drinks are a little pricey, but not far from some local hot spots for good cocktails. Finally, the location could not be any better, central to everything.

Great hotel in the centre of the city. Comfortable, clean rooms with staff that go the extra mile to please you. The breakfast spread is decent and is fresh and tasty. There is car parking in the basement but it is tight (not recommended for large vehicles) and usually full - so book/reserve in advance.

From the moment we checked in with Jose we were very impressed. Easy check in, big room, very modern too, plus slippers and dressing gown. Kettle, and plenty of tea, coffee choices in room. Had breakfast prepaid, great selection of hot and cold food and drinks, the staff on hand to help with anything they could. We needed a taxi on departure which Jose kindly pre ordered for us. Nice hotel, friendly staff, easy walk to town and port.

The hotel is excellent. Fran, Andres , Ainhoa and Marisno were great and answered all my queries and made me feel at home. The location of the hotel was a little run down . But i had no problems abd it was barelly a 10 minute walk to the centre. The room wss very clean and i felt at home.

This was our 4th consecutive year at the hotel and every year we get looked after very well. We always ask to be contacted for festival bookings prior to our departure and every year the staff go out of their way to contact us. This personal touch, which ensures our next year booking, means the world to us. The hotel breakfast is lovely and all rooms are modern, comfortable, clean, well maintained with excellent air con. So Fran, Loli, Jesus's and Mariano in a true rock 'n roll saying - We Salute You! And of course the rest of the lovely team. You are superstars and it is evident yiu all work hard to look after us. Looking forward to hopefully booking again with you for next year. Kind Regards, Aidan K.

The hotel was perfect in every way. The receptionists (Jose Antonio, Loli & Jose) gave us a map for Cartagena and showed us the best route to all the sights which was really helpful and then told us about the free parking for Easter weekend which we were totally unaware of, thank you so much. The room was spotless and the breakfast was delicious, with just about everything available. There was even a kettle in the restaurant for boiling water and the waitress even gave us a teapot, very happy. Great weekend.
Nick★★★★☆
Nice clean modern hotel, at a fair price, in a good location, with helpful staff. One note. They really need signs reminding guests not to have conversations by rooms and while waiting for the lifts. I cannot believe how many times I was woken by other guests excitedly coming in a bit drunk, or off to start THEIR day at 7.30am chatting outside my room, or kids running up and down screaming. Children should be taught - someone might have just arrived on a late night flight, or been out late, or just want to sleep in. Save the chat for your room or the street, this is common sense. Just because you are awake does not mean other guests are!

This hotel worked out perfectly for our one-night stop in Cartagena. It was easy to find using maps, and when we arrived, Javier greeted us warmly. He shared helpful information about what to see and where to go. He made us feel very welcome. We parked our car in the locked lot behind the building, which gave us extra peace of mind that we didn't have to unload all our luggage. It was easy to get in and out. (It appeared there is street parking around the hotel if you need that option.) We had two rooms and they were comfortable and quiet. We liked the beds and pillows and everything was clean. Nice coffee maker in the room. Spacious bathroom and good water pressure in the shower. Wifi was easy to use and adequate. Not super fast, but I don't expect that at hotels. Grocery store right next door and easy 20-25 minute walk to sightseeing in town were both convenient. We were happy with our choice to stay here and will stay again if we get back this way. Thanks again Javier for your help!

Nice hotel. Friendly and helping staff. Safe parking of our small camper for 10€. Within easy walking distance to the city. Value for money. Quiet rooms.

The staff was really friendly and nice. Breakfast great - they had all essentials. The hotel room itself was however not really clean - if I was not exhausted I would have asked either to give another room or to clean mine. Bathroom was full of dark hair - quite disgusting. But well, the price was also super cheap - not sure if cleaning is included in the price 😀

Good service, clean room, free parking in area and close to the cruise port. 10/10

You don’t have that many options for accommodation in Cartagena, so this hotel is okay for a short stay. There’s plenty of free parking around, the staff is friendly, the bed is comfy, and the breakfast is decent. On the downside, the hotel is in serious need of renovations - there are water-leak stains in the bathroom, aging furniture and creaking floors. Also, they turn air conditioning off in winter, making the rooms uncomfortably hot. I could have slept with the window open, but unfortunately, there were dogs barking endlessly throughout the night. My guess, they belong to a nearby Police station. Advice: Avoid rooms facing Mercadona.

Tips for Booking a Hotel Near the Roman Theatre in Cartagena

Securing the perfect room requires a bit of local knowledge. While the area is highly accessible, a few strategic decisions can significantly improve your stay. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind before you confirm your reservation.

Book Early for Spring Festivals
Cartagena hosts major events like Semana Santa (Holy Week) and the Romans and Carthaginians festival in September. During these periods, hotels near the theatre sell out months in advance. If you plan to visit during these dates, lock in your room early to avoid inflated prices or staying far from the center.

Pack for Pedestrian Zones
Many of the best hotels are located on narrow, historic streets that are restricted to local traffic. Taxis may have to drop you off a short block away at a designated point. Pack luggage that is easy to roll over cobblestones, as you will likely need to walk the last few minutes to your hotel entrance.

Consider the Noise Factor
Proximity to the Old Town means proximity to nightlife. Spanish dining hours are late, and streets can remain lively until midnight or later. If you are a light sleeper, request an interior-facing room or confirm that the hotel has modern double-glazed windows to block out the evening buzz.

Check for Rooftop Access
Cartagena’s skyline is defined by the Roman Theatre, the Cathedral, and the harbor. Many hotels in this area feature rooftop terraces or solariums. Before booking, check if your hotel offers a rooftop view; it is often worth paying a slight premium for a sunset view over the ancient ruins.

Validate Parking Options
If you are on a road trip along the Costa Cálida, do not assume your hotel has parking. Many boutique hotels in the historic center do not have their own garages. Look for hotels that have agreements with nearby public parking structures, and ask about the discounted rates for guests to save money.

The beauty of staying near the Roman Theatre is the ability to experience Cartagena’s layers of history without the stress of transportation. After the museums close and the day-trippers leave, you get to enjoy the quiet ambiance of the ancient stones illuminated at night. It is an atmospheric experience that simply cannot be replicated by staying in the newer, outer districts of the city.

By choosing a hotel from this list, you are positioning yourself for an effortless and immersive visit. Take the time to compare the unique features of each property, from historic spas to modern minimalist design, and you will find the perfect sanctuary to rest after a day of exploring Roman history.
