12 Best Cafes in Cartagena

The scent of sea salt drifting through colonial stone streets, the sharp hiss of a professional espresso machine, and the low murmur of conversation in shaded plazas—this is the sensory backdrop of Cartagena’s coffee culture. While the city is globally celebrated for its historic walls and Caribbean sunsets, a quieter revolution has been brewing inside its vibrant neighborhoods.

Over the last decade, Cartagena has transitioned from a city of traditional tinto drinkers to a sophisticated hub for specialty coffee enthusiasts. Local roasters are now sourcing high-altitude beans from Colombia’s famed coffee triangle, bringing a level of craft and precision to the coast that rivals Bogotá or Medellín. This has transformed the simple act of drinking coffee into a cultural experience that bridges the old and the new.

For travelers, finding the perfect café is about more than just caffeine; it is about finding a sanctuary from the midday heat and a window into local life. Whether you are a digital nomad needing reliable Wi-Fi, a foodie chasing the perfect cold brew, or a tourist seeking a moment of peace away from the bustling plazas, the city has a seat waiting for you.

The neighborhoods of Getsemaní, San Diego, and Bocagrande each offer distinct vibes, from bohemian street art corners to sleek, air-conditioned minimalism. Navigating these options can be overwhelming, especially when the tropical humidity makes every step feel like a marathon. You need a guide that separates the authentic gems from the tourist traps.

This curated list focuses on establishments that prioritize quality, atmosphere, and service. We have evaluated them based on bean provenance, barista expertise, and the overall comfort of the space. These are not just places to grab a quick drink; they are destinations that enhance your understanding of Cartagena’s evolving palate.

From hidden garden patios where you can hear the birds chirp to industrial-chic spaces with the best pastries in the district, there is a spot for every mood. Prepare to explore the aromatic corners of the city where the beans are fresh, the air conditioning is cold, and the hospitality is warm.

Below is a curated selection of the best places to satisfy your coffee cravings in this Caribbean gem.

Great specialty coffee house. I ordered a latte and a pistachio cookie. Both absolutely lovely. My husband bought a hot chocolate which was thick and delicious according to him. Lovely cool atmosphere inside.
Mac Freeman★★★★★
Highly recommend. The vibes are amazing and the food was great. I got an iced cappuccino and it was my favorite drink of our whole Europe trip. We stopped there in the morning, and then went back for an afternoon coffee the same day.
Mickey Citarella★★★★★
An unassuming spot off the famed Calle Mayor. This lab treats you to some amazing cafe experiments that cater to the aficionados and casual coffee drinkers. Think rare and rated espresso with notes on taste and origin. As well as sweet and sugary experiments that are presented in beakers. The staff is accommodating, friendly and willing to guide you towards the experience you want to concoct in the lab. The vibes are phenomenal every little detail is well thought out from the French press light display to the amazing cold brew, brewing. It’s a social media paradise. So take a few steps off the Main Street and immerse yourself in the Cafelab.

Great old city house. Nice athmosphere, lots of books, objects from the beginning of the century, when the vila was built. Nice people. Not sure if it's a family run 100% business, like the waiter and all the stuff. Prices about 3 Euro por drink. Marvellous garden! Must be a delight at summer. Totally recommend for lovers of bohemian athmosphere.
Nuria Ramis★★★★★
Oh My God!! What a beautiful place!! I would've never expected to arrive to a place like that after a very small while of driving through and area with houses that had nothing to them, and I was stunned when we got inside an amazing beautiful victorian-like(Victorian architecture was never very popular in spain) kind of house with really good fresh juices... very much worth the while. Un sitio espectacular!! ....me quede boquiabierta cuando llegamos y al entrar... despues de no mucho callejear por un barrio de viviendas donde no esperarias encontrarte mucho mas entramos en este lugar. Que sitio, que estilo, que clase...

Very cool and relaxing bar. Only went in late afternoon for a beer, service with a smile and at very reasonable cost.

Visited during 3 King's Procession. Well received and looked after by staff. Very convenient to pop in and out to see the Procession. Drinks were normal price and it was great to get German and Belgian beer especially Duval.
PAUL A★★★★★
Visited Cartagena for the Three Kings parade, but the highlight of our day was finding this fantastic bar! Decor is really cool and the atmosphere is great. Drinks are also cheaper than you might expect, in a more 'upmarket' bar, such as this and the staff were really nice and polite. Will definitely be returning, hopefully when they have some live entertainment performing.

This place is a beautiful little hidden gem which deserves all the ratings. It was very busy when we arrived but the service was still amazing, we were taken care of despite waiting in a line. This place is dark, its cosy, its not fancy but it makes you feel at home. It has history, it tells a story and that is its own style. The food, the cake, the tea everything was absolutely incredible. One of my favourite cafes so far and deserves all the love it gets. Thank you to everyone for a lovely experience.
Antonio Retamal★★★★★
My wife & I were taken to this bar by a tourist guide. We loved it. Very unique atmosphere, quirky. The furniture is unusual for a pub. We tried the Cafe Asiatico. It was good. We highly recommend it.
Hugo Farne★★★★★
Sweet cafe with fun decor that does sweet and savoury crepes. Bigger than it looks (there’s second room). Great service - accommodated unusual requests from our kids! Would highly recommend.
Nicole Lai★★★☆☆
A quaint little cosy cafe smacked in the corner of the town. Have heard about this place from many locals and decided to pay a visit one Friday evening. The entire interior was done in a very unique manner, with all different types of chairs paired with unique tables. We were seated by some lazy chairs which the table was an enormous luggage. We wanted to order some light snacks however the quiche wasn't available and they only had the salty crepes. Price listed on menu was €1 per crepe but when we placed our orders, we were informed by the waitress that they are actually €2 each. Though it tasted not bad however for the size and simplicity, we felt it was overpriced. Cheesecake and cappuccino was mediocre. Hopefully if we do ever return, there would be more options from menu available for us to try.
Petar Peric★★★★★
Quiet and cozy little place with amazing and kind service. The coffee was really good, and they have a great variety of sweet treats. Brownies and carrot cake are amazing! Staff speaks really good English and are very nice and friendly. 10/10 recommend it!

Delicious! Been here a few times during our trip in Cartagena. We tried a few of their brunch and pastries items. Hard to pick which was my favorite. I absolutely loved the morning ginger bun! The mango tart was deliciously tart and banana bread was also good. Also, their coffee was phenomenal. Loved their latte and flat white. Jessica was very friendly and helpful! Can get busy during the afternoon. Highly recommend.
Sami★★★☆☆
We went to Nia bakery this morning for brunch around 10am. It was relatively busy and we were a large group with six people, but we were willing to wait. The hostess initially sat us at 3 separate tables, so we wouldn’t have to wait around (appreciated). However, we were sat separately for OVER an hour. They took our drink orders but did not take our food orders or seat us together for over an hour. There were multiple groups that came in after us that were seated and received their food within that hour. If we knew it was going to take this long, we would’ve been fine sitting separately and ordering food to get it on time. I feel that they forgot about us. Eventually they just ended up combining 3 tables together to sit us together, even though there was a large table open outside. They also seated another large group before us, also noticed that they seated multiple smaller groups (2-3) in tables meant for larger groups. Food was mediocre, quite expensive. Coffees were delicious and the ginger cinnamon bun was also great! Overall, it is a nice ambience and in the heart of the old city, but the service could be better.

☀️ **The perfect way to end our trip to Cartagena!** ✈️🌴 It was our last day in Cartagena, and before heading to the airport, we wanted to enjoy one final meal. After exploring several options, we were drawn to this place because of its beautiful ambiance and the promise of creative fusion flavors. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip! ❤️ From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome. 😊 They were attentive, friendly, and genuinely interested in making our experience memorable. We were given a great table, and as we looked through the menu, we were captivated by the story behind the restaurant and its mission to showcase the incredible variety of Colombian fruits. 🍓🥭🍍 It added a special touch that made us appreciate the experience even more. We ordered the **Chorizo Roll**, **Butter Croissant**, **Panini Caprese**, a coffee ☕, and a smoothie 🥤. Every single item was outstanding! The flavors were fresh, creative, and perfectly balanced. You could tell that each dish was thoughtfully crafted, and every bite left us wanting more. Even though we were already full, we couldn't resist ordering dessert... and we're so glad we did! 🍰✨ It was the perfect ending to an amazing meal. The balance of sweetness with a pleasant hint of sourness was simply incredible—the cherry on top of an already fantastic experience. This is definitely a place we'll return to on our next visit to Cartagena. Whether you're looking for a relaxing moment alone, a date with your significant other ❤️, or a brunch with friends 🥂, this spot delivers. The music matched the atmosphere perfectly, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. ⭐ **Highly recommended!** If you're in Cartagena, don't miss the chance to visit this gem.

Coolest architecture and interior design I have ever seen. Breakfast, pastries and coffee are top notch as well. Jessica, our server was a delight and helped us order in spanish as we are still learning!

Nía Bakery Coffee Shop & Cocktails is a lovely spot with a warm atmosphere and great attention to detail. The pastries were fresh and delicious, the coffee was excellent, and the service was friendly throughout my visit. What I especially enjoyed was the combination of a cozy bakery vibe during the day and a relaxed cocktail setting later on. Everything felt thoughtfully curated, from the presentation of the food to the ambiance of the space. A great place to enjoy breakfast, coffee with friends, or simply spend a relaxing afternoon. I would definitely come back and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Cartagena.

Fabulous coffee ... sooo good and a lovely surprise and change from usual bland offerings. Spotlessly clean. Very helpful and friendly staff. Thank you.
Noah Ståhl★★★★★
Wow! Visited this place and met Pedro, the owner. He not only runs the coffee shop—he also roasts the beans himself on the premises. Amazing variety of specialty coffee. We drank a fantastic Ethiopian coffee. Pedro is very knowledgeable and humble. Had a chat about coffee with him, and his passion really shows. The art inside was made by a local artist, and Pedro has done a great job with the design of the coffee packaging and the shop interior. Amazing experience—10/10 service and coffee knowledge here.

Amazing coffee & unique Cartagena asiatico drink! Off the main tourist path & unique authentic Cartagena coffee shop. We appreciated your kindness and care for American tourists-we felt at home!

I would have taken a photo of my delicious coffee, but it was too good to not drink right away!!! No need for any sugar, the owner said, and he was right!!! He does an amazing job roasting and grinding his beans! Soooo good!
Chico Bono★★★★★
I can firmly say that this place makes the best coffee in Cartagena! I've had flat white for few times and it is one of the very best I've tried around Europe. If you are looking for an aromatic, rich, authentic and a REAL cup of coffee then this is the place to be. Also you get to choose the coffee origin (Ethiopia, kenya, etc). You can also buy roasted coffee packs to take home or special coffee equipments like V60, grinder, etc. Thank you for the lovely coffee and the amazing treatment and focus that is put in the place!

We found the Blossom Café by accident whilst in Cartagena for an appointment. What a good find! Kristina and Gareth have just recently taken over the business and what a lovely couple they are. So friendly and welcoming. The prices are very reasonable for a city centre establishment. We had two lovely iced coffees, a tuna tostada and a piece of homemade cheesecake for €18. Kristina makes the cheesecakes herself. There is pink blossom around the café and it all adds to the lovely decor of the place. Definitely worth a visit and we will return for sure.
F.I.T Traveler★★★★★
I’ve been to Blossom several times since the design and owners change, and I absolutely love what they’ve created. 🧡 I was curious about the new name and its story, and you can really see how much they love what they do in every little detail. It’s the perfect mix of breakfast, brunch and homemade cakes — with less sugar than usual, and even sugar-free options if you ask. I tried thir vegan cake and I was absolutely inloved with it and also ordered one strawberry & white chocolate cheesecake for a celebration and it was incredible! 🍓🍫 They also have the only Ube in Cartagena and Matcha has such a pretty colour and you can also enjoy wine with one of their cute, Instagram-worthy cheese & ham platters — perfect for the end of the day. 🍷 I love the concept, the atmosphere and the attention to detail. Definitely my new go-to place in Cartagena! 🌿✨
Raphael K★★★★★
For me the best coffe in Cartagena. The family that runs the place is just lovely and welcoming and let's you feel at home immediately. I tried now different Tostadas over my last visits and the are simply delicious. Could find anything similar in Cartagena. So if you want something different than a standard bar, but a real good cafe, go to Macá!
Merve★★★★★
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ MACÁ Cheesecake Artelier is one of the coziest and most creative spots in Cartagena. The place is full of art, flowers, and warmth — you can feel that everything is made with love. The owner was so kind and made our matcha with such care, it felt like a little piece of art. It was my first time trying matcha, and I loved it! The cheesecake was delicious and creamy. The atmosphere makes you want to stay, talk, and just enjoy the calm vibe. If you’re in Cartagena, don’t miss this beautiful place — it’s not just a café, it’s an experience. 💚
Grace Scott★★★★★
Great food, drinks and atmosphere! The range of specialty drinks was so amazing, it made it difficult to decide what we wanted. We eventually settled on the Ice Chai and Strawberry Matcha, both of which were divine and went perfectly with the delicious cheesecake. Staff were super friendly and spoke English and German in addition to Spanish, with English menus also available. We will definitely be back to try out more of the menu and take advantage of the painting sessions available.

Such a cool place with a cool vibe! Loved the interior of this coffee shop. Drinks were great, as was the avocado toast. Service was a little bit short, which was maybe because our Spanish isn't too fluid. Nevertheless, as a coffee lover, this is your place to be! A real chill place.

Really good speciality coffee. I had the caffe latte and espresso(with Indian coffee beans, had to be one of the best beans (that was strong and also super tasty at the same time)). Anyone looking for good coffee and a calm ambience ,this is your place

If you like specialty coffee, this place is highly recommended. They are professional in coffee, I felt like I was sitting in a coffee lab. The atmosphere and the decoration of the place are lovely, especially the toilet.🤭 If you want to know, you have to go. The barista was so informative and attentive, great job!!!

Great drinks, excellent service, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The owner is very friendly and knows how to charm customers. It has many interesting corners and antique objects with great decor. It's a pleasure to spend time in this pub. They have many types of smoothies and a very extensive cocktail menu and all kinds of drinks. There's an upstairs area if you want more privacy. It also has a lovely greenhouse-style room where you can enjoy pleasant natural light. There's a beautiful, secluded garden with some very comfortable tables. It's very well climate-controlled. Tasty and exciting novel menu with excellent service. We had two toasts with eggs which were perfectly cooked (the malakita was exceptional!) The smoothies and juices were very yummy and we found it really affordable (€23 for two filling toasts and fun drinks). The owner was also really lovely! We will definitely come back if we’re in Cartagena again

This place is great. Really friendly and really great cafe. Prices are very affordable and worth every cent. I didn't do 5* ambient just because it gets a little loud as the place is small. Really great spot

Great place for family and dogs! The food is delicious and fresh. The waitress brought a slice of jamon for our dog too! We will definitely be back the next time we visit Cartagena.

Tips for Enjoying Cartagena’s Café Scene

To truly enjoy Cartagena’s coffee culture like a local, it helps to understand a few nuances about timing, ordering, and etiquette. While the city is welcoming to tourists, adjusting your habits slightly can lead to a much more authentic and satisfying experience. Here is how to make the most of your caffeine-fueled journey through the city.

1. Embrace the "Tinto" vs. Specialty Divide

While you are here for the specialty brews, do not dismiss the street vendors selling "tinto" (small cups of sweet, black coffee). It is a cultural staple. Try both to appreciate the spectrum of Colombian coffee, from the rustic street corner to the refined barista bar.

2. Time Your Visit Strategically

Cartagena operates on a relaxed schedule. Many specialty cafés open early for the breakfast crowd but can get packed with laptop workers between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. If you want a quiet moment or the best lighting for photos, aim for opening time or the slower afternoon hours between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

3. Ask About the Origin

Colombians are proud of their coffee regions. Do not hesitate to ask the barista where the beans are from—whether it is Huila, Nariño, or Santander. Asking about the tasting notes and altitude not only shows respect for the craft but often leads to free samples or passionate conversations.

4. Don’t Skip the Bakery Case

Many of Cartagena’s top cafés have partnered with local artisan bakers. The pastries, especially those featuring local fruits like maracuyá (passion fruit) or coco, are often baked fresh daily. A coffee paired with a local pastry is the standard afternoon snack here.

5. Carry Cash for Smaller Spots

While the upscale cafés in Bocagrande and the Walled City accept all major credit cards and digital wallets, some of the more bohemian spots in Getsemaní may have minimum purchase requirements or occasional connectivity issues with card machines. Keeping a few small bills on hand ensures you never miss out on a great cup.

As the afternoon sun begins to soften and the golden light hits the bougainvillea-draped balconies, you will find that your favorite café in Cartagena becomes more than just a pit stop. It becomes a marker of memory, a place where you paused long enough to taste the richness of the region and feel the rhythm of the city.

The beauty of Cartagena’s coffee scene lies in its contrast—the ancient stone walls against modern minimalist design, the heat of the street against the chill of a cold brew. Whether you choose a bustling corner in Getsemaní or a quiet oasis in San Diego, every sip connects you to the passionate farmers and roasters of Colombia. So take your time, order another cup, and let the city reveal itself to you one café at a time.
