12 Best Halal Restaurants in Biarritz

Biarritz may be world-famous for its surfing beaches and Basque charm, but the city’s culinary scene is just as compelling as its Atlantic waves. For Muslim travelers and food lovers who prioritize halal dining, the options have grown significantly in recent years. While Biarritz is not as dense with halal restaurants as Paris or Marseille, it offers a curated selection of spots that respect dietary guidelines without compromising on flavor.

Understanding the local landscape is key to a satisfying visit. The Basque Country is deeply rooted in French culinary traditions, which often feature pork and alcohol-based sauces. However, a new wave of restaurateurs has introduced menus that blend French technique with North African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian influences, all while maintaining strict halal standards.

From slow-cooked tagines to sizzling grilled meats and fresh Mediterranean platters, the variety is surprising for a coastal resort town. Many of these establishments are family-run, bringing a level of hospitality and authenticity that larger chains simply cannot match. This guide focuses on venues where the owners have explicitly confirmed halal sourcing or where the menu is exclusively halal.

It is important to note that some restaurants may serve alcohol on the premises even if the meat is halal. If you prefer a completely dry environment, we have noted this where relevant. Always verify current policies directly with the restaurant, as operational details can change between seasons, especially in a tourist-driven economy like Biarritz.

Whether you are looking for a quick bite after a surf session or a leisurely dinner overlooking the city, you will find a spot that fits your needs. We have evaluated these restaurants based on food quality, consistency of halal compliance, and overall value to help you make an informed choice.

Here is our curated list of the best halal-friendly dining options in and around Biarritz:

It was really nice experience in was restaurant today. The food was delicious, the portions were generous enough to not to finish it all. We were also pleased with service from a young man Ilyas. It is definitely a warm recommendation from us 🌺

I recently dined at a Moroccan restaurant and it was an amazing experience! We enjoyed a fantastic couscous, tender lamb, a delicious vegetable soup, and a variety of appetizers. The coffee and tea were simply delightful, and the presentation of each dish was beautiful. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home. Our waitress was very attentive and thoughtfully recommended dishes for my daughter and me, ensuring we had a wonderful meal. We had no communication issues, as she spoke both French and good English. We left the restaurant incredibly satisfied and I highly recommend it to everyone. My 11-year-old daughter was especially thrilled with the couscous!

Delicious galette kebab! Amazing delicious seasoned fries. And great vibes from the staff.

It’s a kebab place hidden in the middle of a business park. The food is average. The service is decent. I tried the tacos and they were nothing to brag about. I think you can hit or miss this joint.

Honest restaurant. Friendly and helpful host. Good Food. Because they don't offer alcoholic drinks, I tried a non alcoholic beer. That wasn't a success: too much sugar. I guess there must be better alternatives. But okay, the ordered moroccan salad and couscous dish were quite nice and they offer a very good coffee. As to the atmosphere: a quite spacious restaurant. They might consider adding some warm lighting, soft music, or cozy decor to make the restaurant feel more inviting and comfortable.

Came here because of they have lots of seafood dishes. The baby squid stew as well as the fish burger were delicious. The mussels were ok. The dessert apricot tart was very good.
Daniel Navaro★★★★★
A restaurant where the chef actually cooks and doesn't just reheat frozen food, which is increasingly rare. The hake was excellent with homemade fries, a generous portion, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and left completely satisfied. The owner is also very friendly, and parking is easy if you come by car. Good value for money. A restaurant that serves real food, I highly recommend it.
Thibault Frappier★★★★★
This restaurant is absolutely delightful, from the decor and the friendly staff to the quality of the food: everything is perfect, nothing to complain about. I highly recommend it; it's a superb experience. Go without hesitation!

We finally got to eat the frog legs 😆. There are no words other than perfect. Everything is excellent, the service is top-notch, one of the best places I've been. It's a place I highly recommend, don't miss it. Thank you to the team for their warm welcome and friendliness.
Gaëlle C.★★★★★
A truly lovely discovery ☺️. My daughter and I stopped there quite by chance, and it was a lucky break: we were warmly welcomed and served (genuine kindness and delicacy, what a pleasure!), and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We started with a small casserole of baby squid with plantain sauce, which was absolutely delicious (it's my go-to dish at restaurants, and it had been a long time since I'd enjoyed it so much 😋... a classic, but one that, although served in many places, isn't really a must anymore in most cases 😐). Like my daughter, I decided to try the fish burger. It had real fish (hake) and butternut squash instead of tomato, among other things. A delight! Due to lack of time, I had to forgo the French toast brioche, but we'll definitely be back (the other dishes on the menu, many of which were fish-based, were very tempting 🫢). Thank you for this great time 🤗

5 stars are not enough for this place. I have enjoyed Lebanese food from all over the world and even make my own when I can. Enjoying the baba ghanoush and tabouli here was humbling. Truly incredible flavors and addicting. I will return to Biarritz just to eat here again. (Side note - we stopped here a few times. The owner was delightful - friendly and welcoming. Her employees who helped us when she was not there were decidedly not. The food is so good, it is worth putting up with rude service).
Camille Rose★★★★★
Excellent Lebanese takeaway, with great service, a personal touch, and all the middle eastern delights you could want. A must if you want to have a great lunch on the beach or at home.
Laurent Etchebarne★★★★★
A place I highly recommend for a meal. The Lebanese cuisine is truly exceptional, just like the extremely pleasant and helpful server who guided us perfectly through the different choices. Kebas, falafels, tabbouleh, carrot cake... everything I bought was excellent 👍. I'll definitely be back.
Adrien★★★★★
Cuisine excellente, à l’image du service : la vendeuse est sympathique et donne de très bons conseils. Le houmous et les falafels sont excellents, il me tarde de découvrir les autres produits au plus vite !
PLET elisabeth★★☆☆☆
We bought several dishes this Sunday morning. The waitress was quite unpleasant, and no matter how many times we asked her to stop while she was filling the containers, she kept filling them again and again. It's a shame because it doesn't make us want to go back and, in turn, penalizes the people who have put so much effort into preparing such dishes.

We walked in and were not greeted at all. We eventually ordered smoothies, which were delicious, but the young man working there clearly didn’t seem interested in his job. He kept sighing while taking our order, and after we ordered, he went outside for a cigarette. He only came back about 15 minutes later to prepare our drinks. In total, we had to wait around 25 minutes. The smoothies were really good, but it was disappointing that we had to wait so long and that we received such an unfriendly welcome.

Hands down some of the best dishes we’ve ever had. What impressed us most was the consistency—usually there’s a weak link or two, but every single dish here was outstanding.
Anna★★★★★
Really exquisite and creative cuisine; the chef and his team are doing magic with the vegetarian ingredients - both in terms of taste and presentation; the serving team met us with utmost kindness and attention and gave excellent recommendations for wine to accompany the food. Menu and drinks are priced very reasonably for the quality. This was a memorable and very enjoyable dinner for a celebration, and I’d be delighted to return. Thank you so much for your dedication to culinary excellence and customer happiness!
Marta C★★★★★
Loved the experience! It is rare for vegetarian food to be incredibly tasty and the plates to be so original in terms of recipe. We went for the 6 course sharing platters and we were incredibly full 🙂 Definitely a restaurant worth a visit !
Buck★★★★★
The food was all fantastic. It is a set 'secret' menu of either 4 or 6 courses. We went for the 4 course and all the dishes were delicious. We also appreciated the very detailed explanations of each dish delivered in faultless English. This was a real highlight of our 10 day trip.
J B★★★★★
Freya provided us with a culinary experience that was nothing short of magical. Each course delighted and surprised us with its dreamy, innovative flavors. This charming, jewel-like restaurant, which exclusively offers plant-based dishes, managed to surpass our highest expectations. We feel privileged to have discovered this gem and are confident that a Michelin star is in Freya's future. Thank you, Freya, for educating and spoiling us. We eagerly anticipate our next visit and hope to celebrate your well-deserved accolades alongside you.

A lovely French restaurant with nice ambience. Menu's offered in many languages from Russian to English. Food came quickly and service was good. Food was delicious and price is fair. Would definitely recommend.

Delicious quality French food, friendly service, well priced. Located in a hotel, this restaurant may not have ocean views but it is way underrated - we had lunches here that were better than restaurants in Old Town. Our son loved the steak hache and ate it three days in a row. The kids meal is a great deal.

I visited Biarritz for a trip from Paris and didn't expected such a nice restaurant with tasty food and large portions in the heart of the city. I felt the food is better than most Indian restaurants in Paris. I was delighted by the starters and the Veg Thali was delicious. Especially that dal rice and pickle made my day. The red jam tasted like Panjamirtham (Lord Murugan Prasad from the Palani temple). I will definitely visit again if I goto Biarritz.
Saurav Mishra★★☆☆☆
Absolute no go for any genuine Indian cuisine lover. Palak paneer was a joke and laced with cream and melted cheese being passed off as paneer. The lamb biryani was tolerable but came with a dal “curry” (never heard of that before) which was not well cooked and looked like boiled dal with some milk in it. Very very weird and absolutely no taste. The place was practically being run by this sweet lady who managed to do everything by herself - which is the only reason I chose to give this place 2 stars. Avoid if you can. Not sure how they managed to get the reviews they have honestly.
Aditi Godse★★★★★
They have really good food, must try their Mango lassi 😍 Also the staff is very friendly.
Adalberto Mollica★☆☆☆☆
The Thali was the smallest one I have seen in this Planet. The bathroon was too dirty. The service was fine and the atmosphere as well. We would order the 2nd Thali if the 1st Thali was well presented. It was really 1/3 size of a real Indian Thali with no much variety on. It's desapointing Thali. See attached what really means a Indian Thali. Indian people would not accept what's offered as a proper Thali. It could be explained on the menu as a half Thali intead or a sample of a real Thali.

Food Was Good and Tasty. We ate chicken tikka Butter chicken and Butter naan. For 3 people it will cost 45 €

Practical Tips for Finding Halal Food in Biarritz

Navigating a French coastal town with specific dietary requirements requires a bit of preparation. While the restaurants listed above offer excellent starting points, these strategies will help you maintain your dietary standards while exploring the wider Basque region. Understanding how to communicate and verify information will make your culinary journey stress-free.

Always confirm halal status by phone or in person. Restaurant ownership and suppliers can change quickly, especially in seasonal towns. A place that was fully halal last summer might have adjusted its sourcing. Do not rely solely on old online reviews; a quick call asking "Is your meat halal?" is the most reliable method.

Look beyond traditional French cuisine. While you might want to try Basque specialties, many traditional dishes rely on pork or wine. The most reliable halal options often come from Moroccan, Lebanese, Turkish, or Pakistani kitchens. These cuisines naturally align with halal principles and offer rich, satisfying flavors that rival any local bistro.

Utilize the larger city of Bayonne. Biarritz is relatively small, and your dining options may be limited on certain days. Bayonne, located just a 10-minute drive or bus ride away, has a larger and more diverse population, resulting in a higher concentration of halal butchers and restaurants. Consider staying or dining there if you want maximum variety.

Visit local halal markets for picnics. One of the best ways to enjoy Biarritz is with a picnic overlooking the ocean. The area has several halal butcher shops and grocery stores where you can purchase certified meats, cheeses, and prepared sides. This allows you to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Grand Plage without worrying about cross-contamination.

Ask about cross-contamination and alcohol. Even if the meat is halal, some kitchens may use the same fryers for non-halal items or cook with wine. If this is a concern for you, politely ask the staff if they use separate utensils and if any dishes contain alcohol. Most owners are happy to explain their process to accommodate your needs.

Be patient with language barriers. While Biarritz is tourist-friendly, not all staff will speak fluent English. Learning a few key French phrases—such as "sans alcool" (without alcohol) or "viande halal" (halal meat)—will go a long way in ensuring your requirements are clearly understood and respected.

The dining scene in Biarritz is evolving, making it easier than ever to enjoy this stunning coastal destination without compromising your values. The restaurants featured here represent the best of what the region has to offer, combining the warmth of Basque hospitality with the rich culinary traditions of the Muslim world.

As you plan your trip, remember that flexibility is your greatest asset. Use this guide as a foundation, but don’t be afraid to explore side streets, ask locals for recommendations, and discover a hidden gem that hasn’t made it onto the digital map yet. Biarritz rewards the curious traveler, and with a little preparation, you can savor every moment of your visit.
