12 Best Halal Restaurants in Avignon

Finding a restaurant that respects halal principles while capturing the soul of Provençal cuisine can be a challenge for Muslim travellers and locals alike. Avignon, with its medieval ramparts and sun-drenched squares, is historically a crossroads of cultures, yet its culinary scene is often dominated by non-halal French brasseries. However, the city has quietly developed a vibrant and diverse halal dining landscape that goes far beyond standard fast food.

The demand for high-quality halal dining in Avignon has grown significantly in recent years, driven by both a diverse local population and an influx of international visitors. Restaurateurs have responded by blending the rich flavors of North Africa, the Levant, and the Indian subcontinent with French culinary standards. Whether you are craving a slow-cooked tagine, a perfectly grilled kebab, or a spicy biryani, the city offers a surprisingly deep bench of options.

Navigating the local food scene requires knowing where to look, as some of the best spots are tucked away on side streets just outside the main tourist thoroughfares. While the Palais des Papes offers a feast for the eyes, the streets surrounding it and the neighborhoods beyond hold a feast for the palate. From casual eateries perfect for a quick lunch to sit-down restaurants ideal for a relaxing dinner, the variety ensures that every budget and taste is catered to.

When selecting these establishments, criteria go beyond simply avoiding pork and alcohol. We look for kitchens that prioritize meat quality, hygiene standards, and the authenticity of their recipes. A great halal restaurant in Avignon should offer a warm welcome, consistent flavor, and a menu that reflects the cultural diversity of the Muslim world while utilizing fresh, local produce where possible.

This guide aims to save you time and uncertainty by curating a list of establishments known for their reliability and taste. We have considered customer feedback, consistency in food preparation, and the overall dining experience to ensure you can eat with confidence and pleasure. Whether you are a resident or a visitor exploring the Vaucluse region, these options promise to satisfy your cravings.

Without further ado, here are the top halal restaurants currently setting the standard in Avignon.

A little snack bar that's definitely worth the trip! I've been eating there since it opened: delicious and always fresh grilled meats, tasty pizzas that everyone I know raves about. The chef and cook always give a warm welcome. I highly recommend it!

I've rarely eaten such good pizzas; the last time was in Italy. Where I live, I struggle to find good pizzas. Thank you. And see you soon when I'm in Avignon.

Je commande au moins une fois par semaine. Les pizzas sont excellentes un petit plus pour la tartiflette et les viandes braisées inégalables. Une belle découverte! Et pour ne rien gâcher le personnel est agréable !

The food was not good. The risotto was wet rice with no salt and it was very small. The black burger was both over cooked and undercooked depending on your bite. It also was not on a black bun like the menu said.. although that’s not a big deal. The vegetables were cold and the fries were soggy and uncooked. We ordered chicken wings, and had a whole conversation with the server about the fact that they were in chilli sauce. They forgot to give them to us, and then when we reminded them, they brought us tiny chicken nuggets in a pool of balsamic vinegar. We said this isn’t what we ordered, as we had seen chicken nuggets as another item on the menu. They refused to take them back at first and argued with us about whether they were chicken wings, then finally took them back, only to return them as per the chef’s order. Finally they took them back but charged us anyways. We were the only people in the restaurant, yet it took 45 minutes to bring us the food. The server was not trained and didn’t know what the items were on the menu. She seemed as confused about the menu as we were. In the end they charged us for the chicken nuggets and refused to take them off the bill. Ultimately we refused to pay for the chicken nuggets and left.

Waited 45 min for two simple pizzas. Seemed like cook was missing. Pizza size was sufficient, however to much dough and flour, barely eatable at some places. Quality of cheese and tomato sauce was suprisingly really good but was overshadowed by the pure might of what was more a bread than a pizza.

The place is very good. They serve a magnificent couscous and the service is something more. Our train was late and we decided to eat something comforting. We had no reservations, the place was full because it was night (Ramadan period) but the attendant was solicitous in improvising a table for us. We tasted the traditional Moroccan soup and couscous. I’ll take good memories of this place.

The biggest problem I had was I don't know French well. My mobile s perfect in translating most of the menu. I'd just unfamiliar with done of the Moroccan foods. The dishes are amazingly delicious. We arrived shortly after they opened and the place was full 25 minutes later on a Sunday night. I wasn't familiar with the wines either so we ordered different reds. Both were strange but delicious.

We DID have a wonderful dinner in the restaurant. The decoration and atmosphere are so exotic, romantic and comfortable. We all liked this place and enjoyed the specially yummy cuisine restaurant. The waiter speaks English since we don’t speak French, he also provided warm hospitality, such a friendly person. We all ordered “lamb” couscous, those food tasted tender, juicy and good seasoning. Those are the most delicious lamb food we’ve had.

I loved the flavours of the chicken tangine with preserved lemon, olives and raisins. Portions are generous. The staff offer great, friendly service. The decor is warm and atmospheric. Luckily I walked in earlier (7:30 pm) because soon it was full. Can get a bit noisy when it’s full.

Great tasting food and great service. However, three of our party who all shared one of the lamb dishes ended up with severe food poisoning (12hours of agony) approx 24 hours later….

A truly magical restaurant tucked away in Avignon. After a few nights of french cuisine we elected to try something different and were pleasantly surprised. The portion sizes are quite big so I reccomend sharing (especially if you get any couscous dish). I personally really loved the lentil soup - spicy, hearty and delicious. The meat was a little on the bland side, but overall a good choice. They also had a very delicious juice (the company Alain Milliat).

My partner and I tried this restaurant during our stay in Avignon. The food is good and beautifully presented. Two minor points: the service was a little slow, and when my partner ordered her dish (due to an allergy), there were onions in it. But apart from that, it's a very good establishment. They even offered a discount on our bill. Thank you to them; I recommend it.

This restaurant has over 900 reviews here, with an impressive 4.5-star rating. What's even more fascinating is that the owner of this establishment is from Liban, making it a Lebanese-style restaurant. This place doesn't have an English menu, but the waitstaff is very friendly and welcoming. However, I still hope that local French-speaking diners, who understand the cuisine, would provide more professional insights when writing reviews. This could include details about the ingredients, cooking techniques, seasonings, culinary traditions, and suggested pairings, instead of the current assortment of useless comments. It's surprising that there are no professional food critics here. Even simple translations of the menu would be more informative than the generic "good food." 🥩Mixed Grill Platter (beef stick, chicken stick, beef ball stick, and beef pie) I've named this dish based on food ingredients. This dish reminds me of the wonderful times I spent in Turkey. Grilled skewers, accompanied by pita bread, rice, and side dishes, form the foundation of Turkish cuisine. Although I don't find the combination of rice and pita, both acting as primary carbohydrates, entirely logical. For carnivores, the meat portion is a bit on the lean side, and there's an abundance of rice. Typically, I'd find it odd to mix yellow noodles and white rice noodles in a dish such as Hokkien mee, but this Levantine-style food did it seamlessly. The size of the beef skewers falls between the typical Turkish and Chinese kebabs. It would be the optimal choice for carnivores if only skewers could be ordered alone. Unfortunately, the dish comes with rice by default. The sides of hummus, parsley salad, and yogurt with olive oil are classic Lebanese accompaniments, and while they might be called sides in Western cuisine, the locals refer to them as condiments. The purpose of the thin bread that comes with the meal becomes clear when you see it as a sauce holder. 🥩Beef Pies Achieving such thin pies is somewhat unfortunate as it can make them dry, taking away from the beef's aroma. If you've had Xinjiang-style meat pies before, you'd probably know what a beef pie should be like: tender, juicy, and encased in a crispy pastry that bursts with flavor when you bite into it. A pie, in itself, could be considered a main course, but here, the beef pie is served with rice, essentially combining one main dish with another. A bit perplexing, I must say. Eating at this restaurant doesn't raise concerns about accidental pork consumption, making it very accommodating for non-pork eaters. The careful consideration of dish pairings reflects the chef's thoughtfulness, especially the combination of onions and arugula salad, which significantly reduces the heaviness of the meat on the stomach. However, it's important to note that the quantity of meat is relatively low, and the greasiness hasn't reached an overwhelming level. If a large 300g steak replaced the skewers and rice, the combination would be more reasonable. Overall, it was a good meal, and this was my first time trying Lebanese-style cuisine. I'd give it top marks.
Francis Dolarhyde★★★★★
A lovely meal at Le Cèdre on a bustling Friday evening at the restaurant, mostly populated by locals so always a good sign. The waiter was very nice particularly with our limited French, the food was bountiful, very tasty and well presented and the Lebanese white wine was also very nice. The total cost with wine was reasonable for all we had. Just wish we had room for desserts which looked great onother tables but we were too full!! We had a lovely evening and would recommend to others

We came for dinner, just the two of us, in the early evening. My girlfriend introduced me to this restaurant, and I'm so glad she did. The waitress was very kind, smiling, and attentive. The decor is lovely. We were served quickly at our table, and then we thoroughly enjoyed our meal—it was delicious. They offer set menus with a starter and main course, or a main course and dessert, so it's reasonably priced. I highly recommend it!
Fatima ELB★★☆☆☆
A huge disappointment. I came on the recommendation of my sister, who had raved about a restaurant with delicious, generous portions and affordable prices. But in reality, I found none of that. I do want to emphasize that the service was quick and the waitress was kind and smiling. However, the main course was a disaster! And I mean it! I ordered a salmon fillet with mushroom sauce and potato gratin for about €25. When the plate arrived, I immediately noticed the salmon fillet was very small. Then I tasted the gratin… and that was a shock. The potatoes tasted like boiled potatoes. The cream was still white, as if it hadn't actually cooked with the potatoes. There was an excessive amount of tasteless mozzarella on top (a gratin isn't a kunefe, after all). Honestly, I didn't think it was possible to mess up a gratin this badly. And the mushroom sauce was completely bland; I was looking for the mushroom flavor, but there was nothing. The bread was the same, with a strange and unpleasant taste. At that price, it's simply unacceptable! A single carrot, two small lettuce leaves, and two halved cherry tomatoes to accompany a small, oily piece of salmon—that's not what I call a €25 plate! I was expecting a generous gratin, a decent amount of vegetables, and above all, flavor. I don't know who was in the kitchen last night (I highly doubt they had a culinary degree), but the result was unworthy of the price. I've been to many restaurants, and this one is unfortunately among the worst I've ever tried. I traveled a long way to get here, and I bitterly regret the trip. I won't be going back.

We were so glad we came today to enjoy a delicious lamb shank. It's not our first time here, and we'll definitely be back! I highly recommend this place, which is not only beautiful and has a wonderful welcome, but also excellent food.

Essential Tips for Finding Halal Food in Avignon

Navigating a foreign city’s dining scene requires a bit of local knowledge, especially when dietary laws are a priority. While the list above provides a solid starting point, these practical strategies will help you expand your options and ensure a seamless dining experience during your stay in the Papal City. From verifying certifications to understanding local customs, a little preparation goes a long way.

Look beyond the label: In France, official halal certification is not as standardized or visibly displayed as it might be in the UK or North America. Many excellent restaurants are Muslim-owned and serve halal meat but rely on word-of-mouth rather than a printed certificate. If you are unsure, politely ask the staff, "Est-ce que la viande est halal?" (Is the meat halal?). Owners are generally happy to confirm their sourcing.

Beware of mixed menus: Some restaurants in tourist-heavy areas may offer a "halal option" while also serving alcohol or non-halal meat. If strict separation is important to you, it is best to look for fully halal establishments rather than mixed kitchens to avoid cross-contamination concerns.

Explore the neighborhoods: While the city center is convenient, some of the most authentic and affordable halal food is found slightly outside the ramparts. Areas like Monclar or the streets near the train station often host family-run North African and Middle Eastern eateries where the flavors are deep and the prices are lower than those facing the main squares.

Check for prayer space: If you are combining your meal with your daily prayers, note that Avignon has a Grand Mosque located slightly outside the historic center. Planning your lunch or dinner around prayer times can be efficient; grabbing a quick bite near the mosque or in areas like Avenue Monclar can be more practical than eating inside the walls.

Embrace Maghrebi specialties: Avignon’s proximity to Marseille and the Mediterranean means there is a strong Maghrebi influence. Don’t just look for generic "kebabs"—try the couscous on a Friday (a tradition in many North African cultures) or a slow-cooked tagine. These dishes are often where the chefs truly shine and where the halal meat is treated with the most care.

Avignon proves that adhering to a halal diet does not mean sacrificing the joy of French travel or the exploration of global cuisine. The city’s culinary identity is deeply enriched by the communities that have brought these flavors to Provence, creating a dining scene that is as welcoming as it is delicious. From the sizzle of a grill on a quiet side street to the aromatic steam rising from a bowl of couscous, these restaurants offer comfort and discovery in equal measure.

As you wander through the historic streets, let your appetite guide you toward these culinary gems. Whether you are refueling after a tour of the Palais des Papes or seeking a late-night bite after exploring the Pont d’Avignon, you can rest assured that quality halal options are never too far away. Bon appétit, or as they say in Arabic, "Bil-hanā’ wa ash-shifā’!"
