12 Best Family-Friendly Restaurants in Avignon

Finding a restaurant that satisfies both discerning adult palates and the unpredictable tastes of young children can feel like a challenge when traveling. In a city renowned for its gastronomic heritage, you might worry that fine dining and high chairs do not mix. Fortunately, Avignon defies this expectation, offering a vibrant culinary scene that warmly welcomes families rather than merely tolerating them.

The Provençal lifestyle is inherently social, with meals meant to be lingered over and shared across generations. Locals think nothing of bringing children to brasseries, where the sound of clinking glasses mingles with lively conversation. As a visitor, you can tap into this culture by choosing establishments that balance authentic regional cuisine with a relaxed, accommodating atmosphere.

This guide focuses on venues that offer more than just a standard "menu enfant." We have prioritized restaurants with spacious terraces for strollers, quick service for short attention spans, and menus that bridge the gap between adventurous Provençal flavors and simple, familiar favorites. From wood-fired pizzas to traditional daubes, these spots ensure that parents do not have to compromise on quality.

Understanding the layout of Avignon is key to a stress-free meal. The historic center, enclosed by medieval ramparts, is largely pedestrianized, making it safe for little ones to walk. However, narrow dining rooms in the old town can be tight; therefore, many of our selections feature outdoor seating or larger interiors to give families room to breathe.

Whether you are looking for a quick bite between visiting the Palais des Papes and the Pont d’Avignon, or a leisurely dinner under the plane trees, there is a table waiting for you. These restaurants have been selected for their consistent quality, patience with younger diners, and ability to deliver a true taste of the region.

Here are the best options for a memorable meal that the whole family will enjoy.

The menu and the place seem to be very chic and special but behind it was a disappointing experience. The salad was a collection of vegetables not mixed together. In general the portions were small with huge dishes. The menu didn’t have many options and the prices were definitely high for what the food reflected. The dessert was interesting but disappointing. Felt like mousse with Nutella and not tiramisu. We didn’t finish it. Not coming back.

We made reservations here for our wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful evening. The goat cheese salad was so delicious - I would come back for just that alone. I enjoyed the truffle risotto and my husband had the fish of the day which was salmon. Then we topped off with the dessert sampler. All paired with a delicious red wine. Highly recommend.
Stu Oleson★★★★★
Very friendly service and tasty food! Took in a couple travel weary Americans with no reservations and minimal French and provided us a very yummy meal and desserts! Fun, laid back atmosphere that's equally appropriate for a date or group of friends or a family dinner.

Wow! What a cook!! We had a fantastic dinner. Great flavours, nice decorated plates an d very friendly service. They do speak enough English to communicate. Can advise to go for a nice dinner!! And very reasonable price Sorry we only took a picture of our dessert 😋

The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and very welcoming. My husband has the pureed butternut squash with hazelnut soup had a delicious stock with a well seasoned squash. I had the veal steak with a mushroom sauce was perfectly seared and served with a buttery polenta and roasted squash. The server recommended the perfect glass of wine to pair with each dish. Definitely a restaurant you'll enjoy.

After a wonderful day spent with my partner in Avignon, I couldn't think of a better place to enjoy dinner. The restaurant offers a warm, cozy atmosphere that makes for a truly enjoyable dining experience. The food was exceptional—freshly prepared, beautifully presented, full of flavour, and perfectly balanced. I would highly recommend trying one of their specialties, as the quality of the cuisine was outstanding. The service was equally impressive, with the staff being incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We were served almost immediately, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The only minor confusion was understanding the ordering process, but that was entirely my own oversight and certainly did not detract from the overall experience. Considering the excellent food, outstanding service, and inviting atmosphere, L'ardoise offers exceptional value for money. I would gladly return the next time I am in Avignon and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

We passing by found this place by accident and after enjoyed our delightful lunch and realised it was on our restaurants map that our guest house host provided to us. We originally just plan to have a quick drink , but end up had the best Comamlnbert for lunch... Definitely recommend here for youreal if you visit Avignon.
Bilal Alaji★★★★★
Absolutely incredible! Everything was perfect. We got 2 of their lunch special plates (goat cheese & fig ravioli and veal tartare) and they were both delicious 😋 the lunch special deal is out of this world! We each got one of those dishes, a glass of house wine, and a desert for 16 euros each 🤯 staff is super friendly and provided excellent and timely service. We sat outside and it was a great ambiance. Literally one of the best meal experiences of my life, dollar for dollar.

The host is amazing! So friendly and helpful, recommended us wine. Food is very good quality, delicious fried shrimp appetizer.

Our table of 6 was taken care of by a lovely woman who was tending to the entire restaurant the night we stopped by. The food was delicious and everyone left with happy, full bellies.

Food was good, especially beef and frog legs, and desserts were excellent. Aside from that, it was a terrible experience: we were treated with indifference, and the owner put his fingers in his ear while taking orders. Overall, I don’t recommend it due to their bad manners.
Charlie Liu★★★★★
What a lovely meal! We tried several French classics — escargots, frog legs, and duck terrine to start, followed by hanger steak and veal liver for mains. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The liver was very tender, and the red wine sauce is really tasty. I dip the bread with the sauce. The steak juicy and well seasoned, but some part is a little bit hard to bite. Both came with fries. The escargots and frog legs were especially fun to try — rich, garlicky, and so satisfying. The vibe of the place is super cozy and welcoming — relaxed, but with heart. It really feels like a place locals go to enjoy comfort food done right. Service was friendly, and the pacing of the meal was just right. Would definitely come back for another comforting French dinner if I stay longer. Plus the price is quite reasonable!
Julia Dixon★★★★★
Great meal - very busy so book a table as the waiter was turning people away most of the night! Nice setting by the church. Three course set menu was good value. Nice quality wine list too. Waiter is charming and speaks excellent English!
fleur★★★★★
ChatGPT recommended me this place, and it was lovely. Just perfect. The food tasted so well! Passionate people as well. When it became busy, I offered to eat my dessert later/somewhere else (coz I was with one on the table), but the owner said: no no, please take your time. Also, it’s situated next to a church, nice authentic environment.

Best location, best food, best service. Our group of seven had every plate and each house wine. Lovely and tasty. I especially enjoyed the duck. Find this place and go.

A hidden gem, not to be missed when visiting Avignon! All our dishes prepared in perfection with reasonable price❣️. Lovely intimate setting right next to Saint Pierre church🤩

A cute, rustic little French restaurant in the middle of a small square next to the old St Peter’s cathedral in Avignon’s old town, only a few minutes’ walk from the Pope’s Palace. Service was very friendly. The food was Excellent. We had the L'Épicerie plate, which was a surprisingly filling salad with various little dishes to sample, and the steak with potato gratin and vegetables, both very good. The cheesecake dessert was artfully plated and also very good. Overall a great place to eat when visiting Avignon.
Bela Pentek★★★★★
Enjoyed a lovely dinner here a few weeks ago (8 June) as we sat in a peaceful courtyard in front of the Basilica St. Pierre. Even though we did not have a reservation (and the place was nearly full), the owner graciously arranged a nice table for 2. Our dinners, from a small focused menu, were fresh, flavorful, thoughtfully presented, and of course...delicious. Paired with a nice bottle of chardonnay simply added to a delightful evening. Highly recommend having dinner at this gem. You will not be disappointed. Reservations recommended.
Enrico★★★★☆
Atmosphere is great, we had our dinner outdoor just in front of the church facade. Service is quick and kind. The food is good, well served. I had higher expectations on the quality and the available choices that I found a bit limited. All in all a great place to be to live the Avignon scene.

Man, am I glad I don’t live anywhere near this amazing Italian restaurant, because I’d be here way too often and definitely packing on the pounds! By far the best pizza we’ve had in France. The dough was absolutely perfect, the ingredients were fresh and delicious, and they definitely don’t hold back on the toppings. Everything was generous, flavorful, and incredibly well done. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality, which makes it even better. And don’t overlook the pasta, the dish we tried was fantastic as well. If you love Italian food, this place is an absolute must. We loved it! 🍕🇮🇹
Oksana Panteleyko★★★★★
Such a great place, highly recommend it from the heart. We came here for dinner first and then came back again for lunch. We tried many places in Avignon, but this one was honestly the most delicious. The bread with truffle butter is absolutely divine. Very tasty pasta, delicious risotto, and a really good salad. The portions are huge, so you can easily share dishes for two people. Everything is very fresh, the atmosphere is lovely, and the staff are very friendly. What we especially appreciated was that even after they were already closed, they patiently waited for us to finish our lunch without rushing us. So we truly recommend this place.
Rob Macdonald★★★★★
We walked around for about 45 mins and came across Pinocchio restaurant and the menu appealed to us. There was no wait and we were seated immediately outside. The service was good. The food was very good. We had the clam linguine and salmon pasta. Both came.out very hot and presented very well. Most importantly the food was delicious! If you are in the area, this is a good spot.
Jonathan★★★★☆
We ordered the parmigiana and a pasta dish. Both were good, but nothing particularly memorable. In my opinion, the overall experience didn’t really justify the price. The atmosphere is nice, but since we didn’t make a reservation, we had to sit at the counter near the entrance. The main issue was that the door stayed open most of the time, so it ended up being quite cold during the meal.
Santos★★★★★
Went there by myself on a saturday night. Place was packed but the service was still very good, with all the waiters being young and very attentive. The pizza “Di Parma” was amazing, the quality of the dough was also pretty good, very thin and the crust was delicious, with amazing bubbles of air inside! The dessert cannoli was a little bit hard, making it dificult to break and i think it should also have pistacchio inside, not only on the edges The atmosphere of the place was also very pleasant, in the dining room below us could see the cookers make your pizza wich gives a good touch to the guests!!

The best meal of my visit to Avignon. I had the veal, my friend had the burger, and we shared the chestnut cake. WOW is all I have to say - the veal was so well cooked, it just fell apart with your fork. I could go on and on, but this will for sure be a meal I think about often after I get home. Thank you for such a lovely dinner!
M McQuade★★★★★
Everything we ordered was fabulous. My salad was the most delicious vinaigrette with sweet, fresh greens. My husband's "hamburger" was enormous and actually a port filet that was so tender and flavorful. The ravioli was perfectly cooked with a scrumptious meat/cheese filling. The serving was so plentiful I could only eat half of it. We will eat at Mama Corsica in Avignon again. Highly recommend. Service was excellent.
ZTW★★★★★
Although we called last minute to reserve for when the kitchen normally closes, the owner was so kind to wait for us and always kept a smile. Such a beautiful ambiance, interesting menu, professional, patient and kind owner which really started our trip to Avignon perfectly. If you’re looking for a welcoming experience, a comforting meal and in a beautiful area this is the place to go. We really recommend the Filet de Veau with the Corsican red wine, it was delicious and balanced. Thank you again and god bless you 🤍
Alistair Whitehead★★★★★
Great restaurant just off the square, we had 2 fabulous meals here, the lady that hosted us was great her enthusiasm enhanced the experience, we tried several dishes all of which had good portions and flavor, worth a visit if you're in Avignon
Anna Jancsó★★★★★
We were looking for a place for lunch on a Sunday after 2pm, near the market. We stopped by this restaurant to try their Corsican cuisine and it did not disappoint. The staff were super helpful and friendly and the food was fresh, tasty and made of high quality ingredients. We especially enjoyed the little fried farinata (chickpea flour) disks, which reminded us of home. And the Corsican chestnut cake was simply superb! Five starts to Mamma Corsica!

This place is a jam! We went 3 times and had a great experience on each of them. The chef also serves you your food, a one man show that looks effortless. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Susan Davis★★★★☆
EAT is tucked away in a little alley. Be on the look out or you'll miss it. It's small and simply decorated. The menu is also small and changes with the seasons and availability. If you have food allergies call ahead and ask. The steak and smoked salmon were the 2 favorites at the table. The salmon is smoked in house and is terrific. They have some nice wines available. EAT is a little pricey. About 100 Euros for 2 including a bottle of wine, but no dessert.
J.Yang★★★★★
Wonderful restaurant to stop by when you’re in Avignon! The food was magnificent. There are about 4-6 selections for each course (you can decide how many courses to take) and each dish is made from carefully selected local ingredients. The service was friendly and comfortable. We absolutely loved the vibe of the simple clean atmosphere. Thank you!
Tiffany C★★★☆☆
The staff is very friendly and I always found this place bustling with diners. With that said, I was a bit disappointed with the food. My starter was the stuffed zucchini with basil and sardines, it was fine. For my entree, I had the tagliatelle with dried fruit and it was very bland. I had high hopes for this place after reading the glowing reviews but it didn't live up to my expectations.
Greg Bala★★★★★
The best experience in 2 weeks in France. Very reasonable prices and EXCELLENT good. Beef stew and fish soup/stew both devine.

What a find! Very hospitable staff. Top notch food at reasonable prices. Wonderful wines by the glass. cucumber and feta gazpacho Dish that I cannot recall, but seriously looks awesome right? Arugula and tomato and something. Sorry can't recall. Iberian pork with passion fruit was a treat! So soft, so tasty. Could take bites and sip wine all day. The bread was amazing - get it! Just a wonderful experience. Wish I could describe the dishes better or more precisely. I remember saying that this was an excellent meal and at the price we felt like we robbed the place.
Pasquale Dominic★★★★★
*** Highlights: “The cutest restaurant ever” - my wife *** What we liked: The Magret de Canard and the Fish are absolutely sensational - how do they make these dishes so well executed? The apricot tart is homemade *** Recommended? It’s a very nice spot located center of Avignon. They offer several menus varying between 27-45€. The service is very polite, the food is impressive and the presentation is spot on. Will return and recommend
Lisa Takacs★★★★★
Excellent service. Did not feel rushed. Lovely wine selection. The food was prepared with devotion, and a master of the culinary craft. I am celiaque, and the staff was knowledgeable and accommodated via modification where needed. The complexity and creativity in our meals was very appreciated. Merci!
Lin Ye★★★☆☆
Food is above average - value for money, but not super nice. Tried two 3-course set in Avenio menu - both starter and main dish are below expectation, dessert is good. Service is missing. Waiting too long between courses (not even a full house), feel ignored. No AC, very hot indoor. Overall, it’s still a nice local restaurant, but not worths the Michelin gourmand.
Laurie Simone★★★★★
There is a reason this restaurant has been Michelin rated every year. The food and presentation are fantastic. A unique combination of flavors makes each plate so delicious. Desserts combine herbs and fruits. The restaurant itself is very inviting and the staff are excellent. They speak English fluently as well.

This is the best food I’ve had in France so far. We started with the falafel and hummus appetizer, which was outstanding. I ordered the steak tartare—fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. My wife and daughter had the chicken pita plate, and both finished everything on their plates. The service was excellent, and the owner was incredibly friendly—he even treated me to a beer.
Maria K-W 84★★★★★
We found this little spot on a quiet side street in Avignon, and it felt like stepping out of the city noise for a bit. The owner made it feel personal from the moment we walked up to it The owner was super nice and actually wanted us to enjoy our evening. We had the shakshouka and beef tartare, and both were better than we expected, rich in flavor and honestly almost too generous to finish. Portions didn’t feel skimpy or pretentious, just the right kind of plentiful. You could talk without shouting, which doesn’t happen enough when you’re eating out. It’s the kind of place that sticks with you because of how it made you feel, not just what you ate. If we were staying longer in Avignon, we’d go back without thinking twice.
aimeecolcomb★★★★★
The reviews are definitely accurate and the food, atmosphere and owners live up to the hype. Everything was incredible! Salem (owner) was so kind and even wrote us a list of places to visit for the rest of our time in France. Such a great experience and if we had more time in Avignon we would 100% come back again. Thank you from two very happy & full Canadians 🇨🇦🍁!
Fabiana Jikal★★★★★
We never expected the food to be this good. My kids, my husband and I all thought this was by far the best restaurant we ate in all of our vacation. When we came at first the attendant was very kind and even gave us tips for where to go! He was very friendly to my kids and even gave us some cold beverages because of the hot temperatures! We would like to go there again! Very recommended!!

We had an incredible experience at this restaurant! The hospitality and kindness shown to us was amazing alongside the absolutely stunning food! It was excellent in every way. I love the vintage style Every table is personalized with love. The owner cooks herself. Very very delicious! She and her mom serve with LOVE - thank you for the exceptional welcome!

This was an incredible experience! We were warmly invited to sit, encouraged to enjoy the sun, and informed of options that were available but weren’t on the menu. Our host was so kind and lovely, as well as especially patient and helpful as we practiced our French, all while taking excellent care of us. The food was fantastic and we were thrilled at the atmosphere of sitting outside, watching people interact, and enjoying the perfect Provençal day! Many thanks to Chez Nine. 💙

Even with an injured knee, you came to cook for strangers. we have gone to many fancy places eat but this is the first real home cooked we have had since arriving. We are glad to have found this place. thank you so much!

We had a great lunch at Chez Nine. It’s small, quirky and cozy. It was a bit crowded but they made sure to accommodate our group of 5. I ordered the Planche Nine and it was super tasty! In addition, I would like to highlight their help and flexibility to ensure our friend with milk protein allergy also had a great meal! Definitely recommend!
Mark Mc Laughlin★★★★★
Chez Nine is the type of local restaurant you always dream to find when visiting a new town. The food is like eating in a chef's home kitchen with everything cooked from scratch and the menu changes daily. Nine and her mum couldn't have been more kind. We had the best salad with local and fresh ingredients, incredible omelette and our daughter had a french style pizza that she loved. If coming from the main train station avoid the touristy restaurants before Palais des Papes and take a right and is a 2-3 minute walk. Nine and her mum gave us the best tip to go the jardins and then up on to the hill with the best view of the city and the Pont d'Avignon. Couldn't recommend this restaurant highly enough and can't wait to go back.

We had an excellent meal here last night in a really pleasant atmosphere sitting outside. The staff couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful and allowed us to move inside to watch the soccer. I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting a good meal in very relaxing surroundings.

Family meal whilst in Avignon. Read goid reviews and was not disappointed. The restaurant has a good buzz about it. We chose to sit inside as it was cooler than outside. The staff are attentive but not overly so but the food is the star of the show. I had goats cheese starter as dod my wife, my daughter chose a desert instead. I had duck as main my wife the lamb crumble and daughter the pesto ravioli. Very good food.

We came here for a meal after sightseeing in Avignon. The food and service were fantastic! We had the friendliest waitress who gave us lots of good tips on museums, and generally was just such a delight! Food was great and just what we wanted - great beef and vegetarian burgers for a good price. Overall, fantastic!

I had a great experience at La Sou'pape Gourmande! The burger was incredibly tasty—juicy and full of flavor. On top of the delicious food, the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend stopping by if you're craving a quality burger. I will definitely be back!

Quite literally one of the best dining experiences we had during our two weeks in Europe. The burgers were so good. Crispy fries. Chicken salad was fresh and flavorful. Exceptional service and hospitality!! I hope you have the same experience as we did.

Wonderful little spot for lunch. Chicken burger and fries are the best I’ve tasted. The salad is fresh and full of flavors. Locals like it. A bit off the tourist path. Highly recommended

Tips for Dining Out with Kids in Avignon

Navigating the French dining schedule and etiquette can be tricky for families unfamiliar with the rhythm of the city. To ensure your meals are as smooth as possible, it helps to understand a few local customs. The following tips will help you avoid long waits, keep the kids happy, and dine like a local family.

  1. Adjust to French Meal Times: Most restaurants in Avignon do not open for dinner until 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM. If your children eat earlier, look for brasseries or cafes that offer "service continu," meaning they serve food all afternoon without closing the kitchen.
  2. Look for "Menu Enfant" but Be Flexible: While many tourist-area restaurants offer a standard kids’ menu of steak haché (burger patty) and fries, don’t be afraid to ask for a half portion of an adult main course. Many kitchens are happy to plate a smaller serving of pasta or roasted chicken.
  3. Book Ahead and Request a Terrace: During the summer months, Avignon is bustling and hot. Always call ahead or book online, specifically requesting an outdoor table or a table with space for a stroller. This prevents waiting on the street with hungry children.
  4. Skip the Peak Rush: To get the most attentive service, consider dining slightly earlier than the locals. Arriving for lunch at 12:00 PM sharp or dinner right at 7:00 PM means the staff is fresh, the kitchen is fast, and the restaurant is quiet.
  5. Embrace the Market for Snacks: If you are touring Les Halles market or the outdoor markets, stock up on fresh fruit, bread, or olives. Having a small snack on hand can buy you an extra hour of sightseeing before the kids hit their hunger wall.
  6. Water is Free: In France, tap water is safe to drink and free. Ask for a "carafe d’eau" to save money and keep everyone hydrated in the Provençal heat without paying for bottled water.

The beauty of Avignon is that it allows you to introduce your children to the joy of French dining without the stiffness often associated with high-end cuisine. By choosing the right venue, you can turn a simple lunch into a cherished memory of shared plates and laughter under the Mediterranean sun.

As you wander the cobblestone streets, let the smells of garlic, olive oil, and fresh herbs guide you. With a little planning and the right attitude, your family can eat its way through this historic city happily and affordably. Bon appétit!
