12 Best Coffee Shops Near Puerta de Alcalá

The area surrounding the iconic Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid’s most elegant and walkable districts. Nestled between the Salamanca neighborhood, Retiro Park, and the bustling Calle de Alcalá, this historic zone is a crossroads of culture, shopping, and daily Madrileño life. For both locals and travelers, navigating the energy of this area often requires a strategic pause for caffeine.

Finding a truly great coffee spot here means looking beyond the generic tourist traps that line the main plazas. The best experiences are often tucked away on side streets, inside boutique hotels, or within the quiet corners of the Barrio de Salamanca. Whether you need a quick espresso at the bar or a relaxed flat white with your laptop, the neighborhood offers a diverse range of specialty roasters and traditional cafés.

This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and proximity to the monument. We have curated a list that balances third-wave coffee shops with authentic Spanish cafeterias to suit different moods and needs. You will find options ranging from minimalist spaces serving single-origin beans to historic institutions where the coffee comes with a side of local history.

Accessibility is a key factor in our recommendations. Every venue listed below is within a comfortable walking distance of the Puerta de Alcalá, making them perfect for a break between visiting Retiro Park or shopping on Calle Serrano. We have prioritized places that offer consistent quality, friendly service, and a genuine sense of place.

While Madrid’s coffee culture has exploded in recent years, not all espresso is created equal. We have evaluated these shops based on bean sourcing, barista expertise, and the overall ambiance. You won’t find stale pastries and burnt milk here; these are the places where the locals actually line up.

Understanding that your time is valuable, we have organized this list to help you find exactly what you are looking for quickly. Whether you are a digital nomad needing fast Wi-Fi or a tourist wanting a strong café solo, there is a perfect spot for you just steps away from this historic gate.

Here are the twelve best coffee shops near Puerta de Alcalá that you should not miss.

It's in a very good location. Their coffees are pretty good. As far as I can see, they use fresh coffee instead of machine coffee. However, the prices are quite high. Almost twice the price of a standard cafe. They also charge extra for to-go coffees. I would never expect something like this from such a place. Staff serve very slow. I waited exactly 15-20 minutes for croissants and coffee.
Jessica Hernandez★★☆☆☆
Well at least the bathroom was clean. I don’t know how this bakery has such high ratings. Sunday at 3pm and hardly anyone in shop. The croissant was flat and stale, and was 4.50!! Go somewhere else.
Iva Jandrlic★☆☆☆☆
Coffee cup lids are awful. Most of our coffees spilled even before we took the first sip. Absolutely unacceptable for the price we paid. Wouldn't recommend 👎
Angel Mendez★★★★★
What a terrific experience I had. The best hot chocolate, best Almond Croissant ever and best Palmera. (Heart shape dessert. Awesome and friendly staff. Their names are Sima and Alberto. A must to visit when in town. I’ll be back tomorrow for sure.

We stopped by for a coffee, and personally I wanted to grab a good éclair. Unfortunately, éclairs were rather not good. Coffee was also kinda disappointing.

The cortado and white chocolate pistachio cookie were perfect. Coffee was light and cookie not too sweet. The barista was also very friendly. Definitely check this place out if you’re in the neighborhood
Clara wanderley★★★★★
i absolutely LOVE this place. the barista who is also the owner is the kindest person ever. i’ve been pursuing a cookie hunt in madrid for the past 3 months. i eat cookies literally everywhere i go to find the best one. this is definitely competing for #1 on the list!!! soooooo good that i literally take the train for 20 minutes just to go get it

My family and I are true coffee enthusiasts, and after trying countless coffee shops across Madrid, nothing has come close to the experience we had at Buna. Their coffee especially the V60 is simply exceptional, easily among the best we’ve ever tasted. We were so impressed that we even bought beans to take home with us. Their matcha is equally incredible smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced. It’s rare to find a place that excels in both coffee and matcha at this level. What truly elevates the experience, though, is Joul. His expertise and passion for coffee are immediately evident. He’s incredibly welcoming, highly knowledgeable, and takes the time to craft each cup with precision and care. I personally loved chatting with him while he prepared our drinks it added a unique, personal touch to the whole experience. If you’re a coffee lover or even a matcha fan searching for something special, this place is an absolute must-visit.
Max Klein★★★★★
Absolutely fantastic cafe! The coffee was great and amazingly they have the new Coconut ROA as well. Super friendly employees, Joel was super kind. Will be coming back!
Kaya★★★★★
Finally found a decent coffee place in Madrid, also serving delicious cookies that are soft but not overly crumbly! If you are into having lattes that taste like coffee more than milk, consider Buna! Do note this place supports takeouts only, there isn’t any place to sit. Perfect if you are on the go. The barista is pretty friendly too 🙂

I’m so happy I found this place, it’s my favorite coffee spot in Madrid! The menu was amazing with tons of options compared to your typical place in Madrid and they definitely delivered. The coffee was amazing, and definitely settled every coffee craving I had. Would definitely come back!
Olena Zhukova★★★★★
My new favourite coffee place in Madrid. Everything is just perfect. Had spotted it even before they opened and immediately understood that the place was going to be amazing! Tried their matcha and carrot cakes, which are absolutely delicious!

little cute coffee shop!!! very good matcha and nice spot

The barista was so nice, they had carrot cake to try and it was amazing! The matcha and the iced vanilla late were very good!!! ☕️ 💌 I will be coming back🥰
Reem shawush★★★★☆
I came here for a coffee, but then saw the matcha and the whisk and decided to go for that! As the annoying matcha barista I am I asked to see the powder because i’m tired of getting milky matcha. It was very high quality, and had a smooth taste with no clumps. I would ask for extra matcha if you like yours strong! There was a little wait but wasn’t too bad. America the barista was an angel and so sweet and understanding.

Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.
Laurel Johnston★★★★★
Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!! Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵 Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom. The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐 Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃
Łukasz Nie★★★★★
The staff were friendly, and the dishes served were very tasty. If you like good bread and coffee, this place is definitely worth checking out. I enjoyed the tomato awokado toast most! The name really charmed me as well — an extra plus for that!

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.
Donald Bell★★★★★
Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.
Netanel Nesher★★★★★
Great coffee place for a quick coffee and a snack. Nice vibes and friendly people. The avocado toast was simple and very tasty. Good prices as well
Damian Górecki★★★★★
Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

I had a wonderful experience at Cappuccino in Madrid. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the service was excellent from start to finish. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome. I would especially like to thank Elham and Ani. They were incredibly helpful, professional, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. Their kindness, attention to detail, and positive attitude made our visit even more enjoyable. Excellent service like this is what makes guests want to return. I highly recommend Cappuccino Madrid and look forward to visiting again.
Nailya Singer★★★★★
All my 3 days in Madrid I came here. Tried a lot of places, but always returned. The staff is really professional, well trained. Loved it! They've even put the sign 'reservado', when I went to the toilet (they never did it in other places). The food was delicious, the atmosphere super chill with nice musics.
Zsolt Szemerszky★★★★★
Cappuccino in Madrid is always a great choice for a healthy breakfast. The coffee is excellent; rich, strong, and topped with a perfectly creamy foam. They also offer an impressive selection of fresh juices and a wide variety of breakfast options, making it easy to start the day on a fresh and energizing note. The only downside is the white toast served with some breakfast dishes, which feels slightly out of place in an otherwise health-focused menu. A whole-grain alternative would fit much better. Yes, the bread felt cheap and unhealthy. Aside from that small detail, the ambiance is pleasant and the service is very attentive, making Cappuccino a reliable and enjoyable breakfast spot in Madrid.
Felix Maximovich★★★★★
Honestly, I’ll start by saying that the food isn’t the strongest part of Cappuccino, but everything else more than makes up for it. The drinks are very good, the view is easily one of the best in Madrid, and the ambience is on another level. It’s one of those places where the overall experience is much more than just the food. The staff are also incredible, especially my friend Jose, who is always amazing and makes sure everything is taken care of. His service is genuinely exceptional, and honestly, if it wasn’t for him, my review probably wouldn’t be quite as positive. For me, the atmosphere, location, drinks and especially the service completely compensate for the food being just average. I’ve had some really enjoyable experiences here and will definitely continue coming back. 5 stars for the overall experience!
Ahmed Bu Asali★★★☆☆
We visited Cappuccino in Madrid, Spain, and overall it was a lovely experience. The ambience is very nice with strong beachy, summer vibes. The outdoor seating area is amazing, and the indoor area is just as impressive—very elegant, polished, and classy. It gives off a Monaco / Saint-Tropez–style vibe, which makes the experience feel quite special. For food, we ordered the Margherita pizza, which was good, though I expected it to be a bit more flavorful. We also tried the chicken club sandwich, which was really nice, but the portions are relatively small compared to the prices. We also ordered a drink and a latte, and both were outstanding. I would especially recommend their coffee drinks—the coffee beans they use are rich, flavorful, and very enjoyable (not sure which beans they use, but the quality really shows). Overall, the experience was great, mainly for the ambience and coffee. I would definitely like to visit other Cappuccino branches in different locations. A solid 3.5 to 4 out of 5 experience. ☕🍕✨

We went to this café and loved it. We ordered simple dishes, but everything was very delicious. The service was great, everyone was very kind and welcoming. The atmosphere is calm and quiet, making it the perfect place for a slow morning before starting a long day of walking or shopping in Madrid. The banana bread was even better than it looked — very fresh, not too sweet and different from others we’ve tried. It surprised us.
Gal Lahyani★★★★★
Great place! The staff is kind and welcoming, coffee is very good and the food is delicious. We had a great Sunday brunch. Highly recommended
Juan Jose de la Torre★★★★☆
A nice coffee shop in Madrid. Great vibe, minimalist design, and excellent coffee. The avocado toast is a must — perfectly ripe, generous portion, served on thick sourdough with optional poached egg. Ideal for breakfast or a light brunch. Service is fast, and charm. Highly recommended.
Paul Frazier Jr.★★★★☆
Great spot to connect with friends for coffee and a chat. I enjoyed the ambiance and the quick service. The place is snug so don’t go there with a large crowd. Coffee was great quality too. Only thing I didn’t enjoy was the chicken wrap I had, but I think i just ordered wrong. I’d go back.
Lena★★★★☆
Very aesthetic coffee & brunch place. The coffee was quite good, unfortunately the turkish eggs lacked a bit of flavour and could have used a bit more spice. I heard a lot of good things about their tostadas though but they were out of avocado that day. Definitely wanna go back to give the food a second chance! ☕️

Neal is the absolute BEST!! Like I come in literally everyday and everyone is always kind but he goes above and beyond. Remembers all my favorite drinks and genuinely just a good vibe in the shop!

Very nice staff and good espresso. However, there’s 2 chairs and no outdoor seating. Additionally, there’s no restroom or anything. Also, the options are very limited. If you’re looking for a simple grab and go coffee, this would work for you. If you’re looking for sit down, work, or chat, do not come here.
Chris Zhu★★☆☆☆
I don’t know who is the barista making all the nice coffee from other reviews, but my cappuccino looks like from an automatic machine. Service is good, nice staffs, cozy tiny place (no bathroom). But the coffee tastes like 95% milk, guess people here prefer milky coffee.
lucija schwarzbartl★★★★★
Cute small coffee shop, great coffee and very good cookies. The barista was super nice and the vibe in the shop was just what i needed. Peaceful, warm and joyful experience
Talal Alsaati★★★★★
Visited Syra Coffee Santa Isabel and really loved the vibe—cozy, simple, and the coffee quality stands out. I tried their Pumpkin Spice Latte and it was great: the pumpkin flavor was clear but not overpowering, and the spices were perfectly balanced, giving it this warm, comforting taste. Honestly one of the nicest seasonal drinks I’ve tried. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area.

A lovely specialty café nestled in the heart of the Chueca area in Madrid, and it’s just a short one-minute walk from my hotel! The ambiance is cozy and relaxed, making it a perfect spot to unwind. I enjoyed a delightful iced latte, which was not only delicious but also reasonably priced. I wholeheartedly recommend this charming place!

A coffee purist - at last. I was looking for a place focused on coffee and not one with coffee as an afterthought and this place was perfect. The coffee is excellent and made with attention to detail. It is smooth, right temperature, and fragrant. Best way to start the day.

You guys, this is a little coffee shop off of Fuencarral, and they are awesome! The staff is everything. They are welcoming, nice, and helpful if you’re having a tough time deciding. I’m an avid coffee lover and their baristas make delicious drinks. I wish the place were a tiny bit bigger, but that has nothing to do with the excellent quality of beverages and the super nice staff. I highly recommend!😍😍😍

Came here twice during our 5 days in Madrid. It’s one of the cafes that opens early which is perfect for me. I also loved that they are not a co working cafe, leaves more seats for customers to experience the place. Everything we tried was excellent.
The Messenger★★☆☆☆
Loved the window seating. Loved the calm aesthetic. Customer Service was stellar. Just the coffee and sandwiches were just that. No rich flavor, same breakfast sandwich you would have at home. No depth or anything magical. Honestly, just stop to any of the many cafés and/restaurants you’ll pass just to get here. I don’t not recommend as a whole. I just wouldn’t plan my itinerary around it again.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
This place has a great atmosphere and excellent coffee. There is a solid selection of pastries and toasts the banana bread was a highlight for me. There is plenty of seating for couples, though it’s not quite as spacious for larger groups.
Simon Cook★★★★★
Situated the heart of Madrid, this coffee shop is a great place to relax and watch the world go past. An excellent standard of coffee and a fine range of pastries. If you don’t have time to relax and want your drink to go, their take away branch isn’t far away.
Dionne Chen★★★★★
One of the best coffee shops I’ve been to. Visited this place in March and still think about it. Pastries are amazing, I don’t like coffee but had a great cup here. Best part was definitely the owner who spoke to me and though the place was busy, always refilled water. I even went back the next day to try my goods and he remembered me. I’m from NYC but if ever back in Madrid, I will 100% return here. Just a great local place.

Great breakfast / brunch option in Salamanca. We had to wait a bit in line (~20 mins), but it was worth it, and the host did everything he could to speed things up for us. The food didn't just look good - we enjoyed it a lot - and the coffee was great as well (super important for coffee lovers like us). Would definitely recommend
chanelle mwale★★★★★
There was a slight queue to get in her but the wait was well worth it, delicious meal with generous servings at good value for money. The staff were super friendly and helpful and the service was quick. The brunch itself was fresh, nice mix of fruit on the plate and french toast was thick and fluffy. I would recommend here to tourists and non spanish speakers as the staff was patient with me when i tried ordering in spanish. All in all a great breakfast and delicious coffee!
Amel MANSOUR★★★★★
The food was really good especially the guacamole !! Best brunch in Madrid for sure. The place is clean and pretty. Also the staff is nice and chatty too. Truly recommend this place. Muchas gracias por todo 😉
Allie Hult★★★☆☆
The food and drinks seem pretty good, but they’re also very pricey. I had the acai bowl, which was still pretty frozen (albeit tasty), and the lavender and vanilla latte, which was amazing. It’s a cute locale but very small, and the workers and environment are extremely insistent on not using a computer and having you leave quickly. This is the kind of place you want to go to so you can post about it on social media once, not the kind of place to become a regular at.
Nina Gírethová★★★★☆
Food was amazing and the atmosphere was really cozy. They also had great gluten-free options, which we really appreciated. However, the service let it down. We were still finishing our drinks after about 40 minutes when we were told there was a queue outside and asked to leave if we weren’t ordering more, which felt quite rushed. Overall, great food and vibe, but the service made the experience less enjoyable.

Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near Puerta de Alcalá

The coffee scene near Puerta de Alcalá is dynamic, but knowing a few local customs and logistical tricks will significantly improve your experience. From timing your visit to ordering like a local, a little preparation goes a long way. Here is how to make the most of your coffee break in one of Madrid’s most prestigious neighborhoods.

  1. Know the Lingo for Milk Ratios.
In Spain, a "café con leche" is half coffee and half milk, while a "cortado" is an espresso cut with just a splash of steamed milk. If you want something closer to a latte, order a "café con leche"; for a stronger, smaller drink, ask for a "cortado." Using these terms will ensure you get the drink you actually want.

  2. Embrace the Bar Culture for Savings.
Many traditional cafeterias in the Salamanca district charge a premium for table service (terraza or mesa). If you are just grabbing a quick espresso, drink it standing at the bar like the locals do. It is often significantly cheaper and faster than sitting down.

  3. Timing is Everything.
Coffee shops here are busiest between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, as well as after 5:00 PM. If you want a quiet table to work or read, aim for the early morning opening hours or the post-lunch lull around 3:00 PM before the afternoon rush begins.

  4. Check for Specialty vs. Traditional.
Decide on your priority before choosing a spot. If you want single-origin pour-overs and latte art, look for "specialty coffee" shops. If you want a strong, dark roast and a classic atmosphere, stick to traditional cafeterias. The area offers both, but they serve very different styles of coffee.

  5. Pair Coffee with a Local Pastry.
You are in one of the best food cities in the world, so do not skip the pastry case. Look for a "palmera de chocolate" (chocolate palmier) or a "napolitana" (similar to a pain au chocolat). Many of the bakeries near Puerta de Alcalá supply the local coffee shops with fresh goods daily.

  6. Carry Cash for Smaller Bars.
While the larger specialty cafés accept cards and mobile payments, some of the more traditional, family-run bars near the monument still have a minimum card spend. Keep a €10 or €20 note on hand to avoid being caught out when paying for a simple espresso.

The area around Puerta de Alcalá offers a remarkable density of high-quality coffee, reflecting the neighborhood’s blend of tradition and modernity. Whether you choose a historic café that has served Madrileños for decades or a sleek new roastery pushing the boundaries of the bean, you are participating in a vital part of the city’s daily rhythm.

After you have had your fill of caffeine, you are perfectly positioned to continue exploring. The entrance to El Retiro Park is just across the street, and the luxury boutiques of the Golden Mile are only a few blocks away. A great cup of coffee here is not just a beverage; it is the perfect fuel for the rest of your Madrid adventure.
