The area surrounding the Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid’s most iconic and visually stunning districts. Located at the edge of the Retiro Park and the start of the Salamanca neighborhood, it draws both tourists and locals looking for a taste of classic Spanish elegance. While the monument itself is a major attraction, the surrounding streets hide a vibrant food scene that often goes overlooked.
For those with a sweet tooth, this neighborhood is a true paradise. The blend of traditional Spanish pastry shops and modern artisanal bakeries offers a unique contrast. You can find everything from century-old recipes for napolitanas to contemporary sourdough loaves and French-inspired patisserie.
Understanding the local baking culture is key to enjoying it. In Spain, breakfast often consists of a coffee paired with a pastry, while the afternoon merienda is a sacred time for hot chocolate and churros. The bakeries near Puerta de Alcalá cater to these daily rituals with a level of quality that reflects the upscale nature of the Barrio de Salamanca.
We have walked these streets to identify the spots that consistently deliver freshness and flavor. Our selection criteria focus on the quality of ingredients, the mastery of technique, and the authenticity of the experience. Whether you are looking for a quick bite before entering the park or a beautiful cake for a special occasion, this guide has you covered.
The options range from historic institutions that have served Madrid’s aristocracy for over a century to new-wave bakeries focusing on slow fermentation. While the prices in this area can be higher than in other parts of Madrid, the standard of baking justifies the cost. You are paying for craftsmanship and prime location.
It is important to note that many traditional bakeries in Spain close during the afternoon hours. Plan your visits for the morning or early evening to ensure you get the widest selection of fresh bread and pastries. The smell of baking bread in this area is one of the city’s simplest pleasures.
Below is a curated list of the best spots to satisfy your cravings, all within walking distance of the Puerta de Alcalá.

It's in a very good location. Their coffees are pretty good. As far as I can see, they use fresh coffee instead of machine coffee. However, the prices are quite high. Almost twice the price of a standard cafe. They also charge extra for to-go coffees. I would never expect something like this from such a place. Staff serve very slow. I waited exactly 15-20 minutes for croissants and coffee.
Jessica Hernandez★★☆☆☆
Well at least the bathroom was clean. I don’t know how this bakery has such high ratings. Sunday at 3pm and hardly anyone in shop. The croissant was flat and stale, and was 4.50!! Go somewhere else.
Iva Jandrlic★☆☆☆☆
Coffee cup lids are awful. Most of our coffees spilled even before we took the first sip. Absolutely unacceptable for the price we paid. Wouldn't recommend 👎

What a terrific experience I had. The best hot chocolate, best Almond Croissant ever and best Palmera. (Heart shape dessert. Awesome and friendly staff. Their names are Sima and Alberto. A must to visit when in town. I’ll be back tomorrow for sure.

We stopped by for a coffee, and personally I wanted to grab a good éclair. Unfortunately, éclairs were rather not good. Coffee was also kinda disappointing.

Is small but maaaan what a nice surprise, they are up yo thw hype, the red croissant is a must ! Is like cheesecake, OMG!!! the chocolate one also is very very good, and the pistaccio , definitely must try them if you are close by ...

Croissant was tasty, everything looks very quality in the store. However, I would prefer not to have croissants covered in chocolate as it makes them taste way too sweet. Would be nice if they had coffee

I can’t describe how good was my experience here, I could try one of the best deserts I’ve eaten in my life

Delicious quality but I ordered 2 cakes to pick up next week and the pick up time is 13,00hours . Im ordering it for a lunch and my sugestión would be to have orders available earlier in the day . Eleven o clock perhaps so as to get the cakes back home in time for lunch!

Slightly obsessed with the croissant de crema at the moment! Possibly the best croissant in Madrid. Exceptional quality pastries and the service is always friendly and fast. Slowly making my way through their menu!

Great spot to take a coffee and pastry break, they have 3 tables with 2-3 chairs per area. Excellent service and food. They also make homemade turrón. They sell out by end of day, so make sure to grab a few extra pastries.

This bakery and café specializes in a delightful variety of bread rolls. The interior features a charming wooden decor, complemented by a few folding tables and chairs. The staff is friendly and patient, always ready to explain the details of each product.
We sampled the Roll Fresas, Roll Berenjena & Brie, along with two lattes. Every roll was delicious, with the savory ones standing out, and the staff even warmed them up for us, which was a thoughtful touch. Our total came to 14 EUR, making it an exceptionally affordable choice.
This spot is perfect for picking up fresh bread on your way to work or enjoying a tasty roll at any time of day. In addition to bread, they also offer a selection of biscuits, jams, and wines. Do keep in mind that, as a takeaway location, there are no customer toilets available due to government regulations.

Lovely place, Sandra the hostess was very kind, gentle and helpful. You can see they put a lot of love in the pastries they make. Will definitely come again.

This pastry is just amazing. On my first visit I have tried their regular cinnamon roll which was just perfectly sweet, the cream brûlée had a nice custard, the pistachio cookie was devine. Today I tried their pistachio ice cream: perfect sweet and savoury and the salted caramel roll was delicious. Mar was really friendly and helpful explaining what they have. Definitely my new favourite place to have coffee and pastry.

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).

Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place.
The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail.
I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible.
Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.

Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs!
The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate)
Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion!
Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam.
The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it.
On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth.
They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.

La Mallorquina is a lovely café with delicious cakes, especially the Ensaimada. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a sweet treat.

Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history.
Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable.
The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry.
The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation.
La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity.
A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊
The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares.
Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol.
Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style.
Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.

Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

Diego Lizardez-Ruiz★★★☆☆
It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty).
The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.
Joe Robinsmith★★★★★
Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.

Great breakfast spot in Madrid! Excellent coffee, delicious pastries, and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend🥰

Very affordable price with good breakfast, simple and makes you full! It’s a hidden gem in the city center if you want to have some
traditional breakfast without paying 20 euros
Maria Mendieta★☆☆☆☆
Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

Such a cute little cafe. The decoration was impeccable, and they do offer a brilliant approach to a chocolate cake. It is light and crispy, while offering a delicious and intense chocolate experience. We have had the take home version often, but we learned that we've always know and loved was the 85% version, and they also offer a 53% version. Also hadn't known that the cake is flour free. The milk shake was a bit of a suprise, but the size and approach does explain the 3€ price. Service was polished. The location is across the street from the Retiro. Highly recommended.

Is it the best chocolate cake in the world? Not sure about that but it is defo delicious. I liked the darker chocolate more than the milk chocolate, both were very light and airy. The ladies working there were very kind. Check out the weird sink in the bathroom!
Danny★★★☆☆
We were drawn in by the ambitious claim of serving the "best chocolate cake in the world," but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype for us.
To be frank, we found the taste to be a bit strange and not very well-balanced.
Of course, this might just be a matter of personal preference.
The shop itself is very small and was empty when we arrived.
Overall, it wasn't a special experience, and we feel it's a place you can probably skip.
Elena Tomasella★★★☆☆
Next time I will try the 70% instead of the 50% kind of chocolate. Anyway, it was good. Maybe the slice was not that big compared to the price, but that’s still okay. The place is so so nice and tiny and the waitresses are absolutely lovely. And to be honest, I can tell that the espresso is actually a very good one.
Dr. Eman★★★★☆
Cozy, welcoming, specialized cafe. Few steps from Lope de Vega museum. They have two options chocolate cake. I have chosen 60% -the higher, and thought it will be dark chocolate like, but was very sweet in my taste. Should suit chocolate lover. Wide smiles and warm attitude from the owner/ shop attendant.

Absolutely amazing experience! The food was beyond incredible — everything was fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared. The service and staff were exceptional, so friendly, attentive, and welcoming.
The place itself was spotless, beautifully maintained, and had such a lovely atmosphere. You can really tell they care about every little detail, from the cleanliness to the quality of the food and the overall experience.
Definitely one of the best places I’ve been to, and I would highly recommend it! I’ll definitely be coming back. ❤️

This little bakery was right around from where we stayed in Madrid. The workers were so incredibly nice and helpful and the pastries were amazing. We went multiple times and tried the strawberry pistachio cake, the carrot cake, canneles, and some other treats. It all was incredible— the carrot cake was the best I have ever had. You can see them making the baked goods fresh when you walk in. One of the best pastries we have had.
Tresha Torreon★★★★★
Lovely café with great pastries! I also really appreciated how accommodating the staff were. I was dining solo and they made me feel completely comfortable, no awkwardness at all. Even though it was quite busy, they still found a way to seat me and made the experience really pleasant. I’ll definitely be back! 😊
Lina★★★★★
Cute and small pastelería, but the little cakes are absolutely amazing. Each one is packed with flavor and clearly made with attention to detail. Despite the size of the place, the quality really stands out.
A perfect spot if you’re looking for something sweet and special. Definitely worth a visit, and I will come back again.
Manuel Gonzalez Vazquez★★★★☆
I usually have coffee with milk and it’s really good. Both the coffee AND the milk are typically not well-taken care of but this place makes them really good. Form me the real deal is when I can have the coffee without sugar. And this is the case here, a a mellow and tasty "café con leche"
The pastries are also high quality, good looking and tasty.
The place is small and quaint and usually packed because there aren’t many tables. The prices are aligned with a gourmet style restaurant. They’re on the high side but I’d say they’re worth the quality offered.
The service is okay. I had a minor misunderstanding that I think they could have handled more elegantly but it wasn’t a big deal.

A great place for coffee and a pastry. The service is excellent, as are the pastries!
We had cafe con Leche, a palma and a postre con fruta. The palma was like a baked toasty bread that made us think if cotton candy were a pastry this is what it would be. The little fruit tart was superb and the coffee was excellent. One of the girls spoke excellent English and made ordering much easier than my bad Spanish was doing for us.
The antique mirrors are gorgeous too.

A fantastic dessert place with a lovely atmosphere. The desserts were absolutely delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. There is a great variety to choose from, and everything we tried was full of flavor. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot to enjoy something sweet.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the overall experience was excellent. Highly recommended for anyone with a sweet tooth!🍰✨

This bakery is a true gem. It makes you feel like you’ve discovered a special local treasure rather than just another tourist attraction. The atmosphere is authentic, welcoming, and full of character, and the quality of the baked goods speaks for itself. A must-visit for anyone looking to experience the genuine charm of the area.
YB★★★★☆
Excellent pastries in a charming little shop. Their almond crossiant is splendid, flaky with sugar crusted crunchy bits filled with a rich oozing marzipan that isn’t too overwhelming
Adi★★★☆☆
I recently visited La Duquesita and tried the chocolate dessert and the turrón dessert. Both were made with high-quality ingredients—the creams were light, well-balanced, and not overly rich, which made them easy to enjoy. That said, the turrón dessert could have featured a stronger turrón flavour, and the chocolate dessert would have benefited from more filling, as it became too repetitive towards the end.
While the desserts themselves were excellent (5★ for food quality), the service significantly detracted from the experience (2★). Despite available seating, we weren’t attended to promptly, and the ordering process felt rushed.
Later, when we wanted to try some chocolate pralines, it was nearly impossible to get a waiter’s attention. At one point, I approached a staff member directly and was dismissed despite her not being occupied, and communication appeared limited when engaging with non-Spanish-speaking customers- a lack of attentiveness toward tourists or international visitors.
Overall, while the desserts are high quality, the service does not match the price point. I’d recommend taking your order to go—the interior is charming, but the experience of staying doesn’t justify it.

Good service from the staff. The place is very small but cozy. They have a lot of options for cakes and pastries. I tried the pistachio tres leches and for the portion size it’s expensive and it didn’t taste like pistachio.

We came across this cute shop and got so curious about their tres leches merengue. It was our first time trying it and it’s just amazing! No wonder there are a lot of customers buying it. The place is okay. The products although don’t look fresh at all but they taste good. I got the brownies as recommended from the reviews but it was so stiff, more like a hard cookie. The strawberry cheesecake tasted nicely. The oreo cheesecake as well was light. The tres leche was nice but it had a bit of an after-taste. Personally, I wouldn’t try it again!
Tips for Choosing the Right Bakery
To make the most of your culinary tour around this historic area, it helps to know how locals approach their baked goods. The variety can be overwhelming, so a few practical tips will help you distinguish a tourist trap from a true neighborhood gem. Here is how to eat like a local and ensure every bite is worth the calories.
1. Look for the "Obrador" Label
In Spain, an obrador refers to a workshop where the dough is actually made on the premises. Many cafes sell pre-frozen or mass-produced pastries delivered by truck. If you see a sign or label indicating an obrador propio, it means the bakers are working in-house, guaranteeing a higher level of freshness and authenticity.
2. Time Your Visit with Baking Schedules
Timing is everything for bread lovers. If you want warm, crusty bread, visit between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, when the morning batches are usually coming out of the oven. For afternoon sweets, aim for around 5:30 PM to catch the second wave of baking before the evening rush.
3. Distinguish Between Pastry and Panadería
While often combined, there is a difference between a pastelería (pastry shop) and a panadería (bread bakery). Some locations excel at elaborate cakes and cream-filled desserts, while others focus solely on sourdough and rustic loaves. Decide if you want a sweet treat or a savory loaf before you enter to avoid disappointment.
4. Check for Butter vs. Lard
Traditional Spanish pastries, especially the flaky hojaldre, were historically made with pork lard (manteca de cerdo). However, many modern and high-end bakeries near Salamanca have switched to French-style butter. If you are vegetarian or prefer a richer flavor, ask the staff if they use mantequilla (butter).
5. Observe the Local Ratio
A good rule of thumb for authenticity is to look at who is inside. If you see a mix of elderly Spanish residents buying their daily bread and young professionals grabbing coffee, you have found a solid spot. 6. Don’t Skip the Savory Options
While bakeries are known for sugar, many in this area offer excellent savory empanadas, mini quiches, or stuffed croissants. These are perfect for a picnic in Retiro Park. They allow you to enjoy the bakery experience without the sugar crash and often showcase the baker’s skill with dough even better than sweets do.
The area surrounding Puerta de Alcalá offers more than just a photo opportunity; it is a gateway to some of the finest baking in the capital. By stepping off the main road and into these specialized shops, you engage with a tradition that has been perfected over generations. The contrast between the historic stone of the monument and the delicate layers of a fresh croissant is a true Madrid experience.
Whether you choose a modern sourdough loaf or a traditional cream-filled bomba, the quality of these establishments reflects the prestige of the neighborhood. Take your time, ask questions, and enjoy the flavors that make this part of Madrid so special.
